  • Capt. Phil Howarth talks today about how fish for Tuna by Trolling. Trolling can be one of the most exciting ways to catch Tuna as the hits are fast and usually ferocious.
Capt. Phil also touches on how to set up an effective spread for both bigger boats and smaller center consoles. Trolling has caught us a lot of fish out at the canyons over the years, with fish both Bigeye & Yellowfin Tuna. You can also catch MASSIVE MahiMahi on the right spreader bars!

We are over the road truck drivers and won't be home until the end of August to September. Our boat is in Mystic, CT. Will we have any luck trolling this spread in the areas you talked about, primarily south of the Vinyard? We love trolling and have never tried tuna before. We are looking for the smaller fish, not the 200 pounders.

Any preference on what direction to troll in relation to prevailing seas? Head, down or beam sea. Does it make a difference?

Head down or following, Beam sea sucks generally as you will be rolling all over the place, it will lead to tangles also with a big spread out

Why not so much in Jefferys? Is it not good fro trolling or are you just noting it’s not that close to you?

Did I hear correctly to tie the divers directly to the cleat of the boat? Are they just to attract the fish? I'm wondering how they would be reeled in if the fish hit the diver and it is just tied to the cleat?

Can also use a outrigger/downrigger release clips attached to the Stern bracket normally used for trailer straps....
