Remakes have long become the norm in the gaming industry. The technology made leaps and bounds since the early console generations, and now there are millions of gamers who are eager to see their childhood classics remade with new graphics, while many others get to experience the original through this new lens. Despite this trend’s popularity, it never made it into the world of fighting games, where there are many old school 3D and 2D games that could receive this treatment. Why is that, and is there room for fighting game remakes? That’s what we want to think about in this video.

So, if you could get one perfect remake, what would it be?
Daggerfall.
Oh, Fighting games?
I bet we could do some amazing stuff with Clayfighter.
Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection
SF1 really needs a remake
Bloody Roar
@cptncutleg Daggerfall devs are making a new game btw. Forgot the name but it seemed pretty ambitious.
I feel like the major reason why fighting game remakes are so rare nowadays is that it would be a retread of old mechanics. Why remake a game with its lack of characters and clunky mechanics when you can simply make and update a new game with more characters and intuitive mechanics? I believe that's the major reason why most FG developers would rather develop a new game over remaking an old one.
It’s the same thing with racing games. GT4 might have more cars and tracks than GT7 but 7s are more detailed inside and out and are using more advanced physics systems. It simply makes more sense to add them into the new games.
Competitive reasons too
The major reason is they couldn't make money with dlcs with remakes... why making a SF3 remake when you can sell for a higher price SF3 characters in SF6 ?
My friend, it is looks like, you never heard of "Dead Or Alive Ultimate"
.
@@sobornes239
1. sf3 online edition exists
2. sf3 online edition had dlc in the form of dipswitches and cosmetics
3. do you understand how much dev time goes into making a sf6 character compared to a sf3 character??
That “oh, wait” moment when you remember all of the street-fighter 2 ports, the capcom game compilations and for straight reboots, we have MK9 that was titled just “Mortal Kombat” and now we have Mortal Kombat 1
What about SF2 HD remix? I didn’t see that mentioned…
I feel like I want more re-releases than remakes. Like I have long wanted kof 11 to be re-released with rollback instead of a full remake. There are a lot of titles that I have essentially "missed" that I would love to see make a comeback but that doesn't mean I want them changed. I think part of the fighting game remake issue is that once you change mechanics or balance, it really is a different game in a lot of aspects, since fighting games are really only about the core interaction between characters.
I think NRS could make a killing re-making the 3D era MK games. Fix up the gameplay and you are pretty golden
They won't because WB & NRS hates their past games like most woke developers.
Street Fighter's 30th Anniversary release 12 games on 1 disc, Mortal Kombat's 30th Anniversary did the opposite by releasing no collection.
@KEN-1991 It's ironic that as much as they nostalgia pander the first three games, they never re-release those games.
Maybe if fighting games get to a point where mainstream titles get like 50k+ players, it would mean that the audience is big enough to justify the return to older titles to tweak them up.
Player counts matter less that overall sales.
The only thing old games need if they're not going to be updated mechanically is the abilty to be playable online, which some devs already try to accomplish thru rollback implementation on older titles as well as legacy collections like the one Capcom put out recently
@@rexthewolf3149 They are two parts of the same coin. If you are shooting for the biggest audience possible, no worries. If your game is niche, then market as a whole needs to be bigger to support a niche game. So you need mainstream fighting games to be big before the audience is big enough to support (buy) niche titles (remakes).
@@3DMegaGamer Eh, I would still be down to see what a lot of those games would look like with a fresh coat of paint. Though if the original is also given the online functionality, that's a plus.
3:22 Honestly, despite being called a "remake", I consider it as "reimagining", as it is basically an entirely new game but the core ideas are the same.
Doa 2 ultimate ? Thats a remake and its on xbox right now if anyone wants it its a great fighting game plus its cheap with lots of content.
2U is peak 😌
Now rumors saying a reboot doa game is in the works
Fighting games are in such a rut every new release is barely more than a remaster in the first place. Upgrade graphics, slight improvements to gameplay, fixes here and there, and they just slap a higher number on it
Hoping for Virtua Fighter 6 to be made, New Rival Schools, New Bloody Roar and, DARKSTALKERS 4 that needs to come back right fucking NOW!
KOF 94 Rebout. Perfect example of remake. Wish the game had been released in the US.
New BGs, team edit, arranged music, playable bosses.
KOF '94 Rebout was okay, but what made it fail is that it's only one remade game.
It needed all 5 remade titles of the Orochi Saga put onto one disc including KOF '98: UM.
98 and 2002 too
The "If it's broke, don't fix it?" reminds me of why Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) Multiplayer has trouble on being remade/remastered. Broken, chaotic yet people wouldn't want to see it change because it's awesome, but keep it intact and Noob Tubes 24/7.
Yet they still found a (short of) solution: put MW2 '09 contents (maps and weapons) and put them in a different game (Modern Warfare 3 (2023) ) with balance and mechanic changes (and greed...).
It's not MW2 '09 but your favorite stuffs are there.
My friend, it is looks like, you never heard of "Dead Or Alive Ultimate"
Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur, and Street Fighter.
We need Virtua Fighter 6.
Tekken 4 remake would be dope
Bros gonna be big one day and I can’t wait to see you grow man keep it up
I was thinking about this the other day in regards to SSF2THDR. Even though it came out at the height of the fg resurgence, no one plays it, purists hate it, and it certainly didn't do well enough to give 3rd Strike or Darkstalkers the same treatment when they had their online editions released. So I think players would just rather have their game untouched by modern taste.
I'm not sure bringing up HD is a good example, considering it's a hideous game that offered basically nothing over the original.
@@TheRadioSquare still a remake and the thinking behind it from the devs pov is that they were bettering the game. I mean I didn't like it at all, but they thought they were creating the definitive version.
Unpopular opinion but I loved that game.
SSF2THDR's existence is the reason why we dont have fighting game remakes anymore. it soiled the bed
@@justrok79 yeah, but intentions behind it are not at all related to what people would rather have. And in fact, some of the worst games out there were made because execs thought "this is what da people want, data proves it!" instead of just trying to make something good.
What was the song that started at 1:35?
What was the song that started at 4:46?
A Bloody Roar HD collection would be nice.
Gotta Have A Fighter Maker Remake With Today's Hardware.
Street Fighter 2 HD is already existed
And basically failed thanks to the purist ST community not liking the changes.
Tekken Tag 1 & Tag 2 remade & Re BALANCED would be a DREAM COME TRUE!!!
There was soul caliber 2 HD online, and virtua fighter 4 not too long ago, mvc2 hd was also one. Idk there's been a few slight graphic upgrades with online.
i would love a tekken 1 remake with a story mode like tekken 8
We are all screaming for 'Bloody Roar'
F*ck me I want a *Dead or Alive 3 Remake/Remaster* for over 10 Years!!
4th Counter Direction and Online Gameplay, 4K assets, Soundtrack from EVERY DOA Fighting Game and slight Balance changes cause this Gem is... Sadly kinda Broken
Forget about remakes, just at least a port or remaster is all I'm asking for.
Iwill forever hope to see oneday either a remake of BLOODY ROAR Primal Fury or reboot of BLOODY ROAR, cuz that IP is soo nostlagic to me, and idig 3D Fighting games and back in the days iused to mainly play Soul Calibur, Tekken and Bloody Roar and the latter had such a fast paced, technical combat system with a cool concept of priming/shifting into beastial creatures which changes a character's movesets almost completely... such an iconic FG that defintely had a concept that could be easily resurected
I want a Rival School, and Project Justice remake.
so what y'all think about SF2 HD and VF5 ultimate showdown are they a remaster or remake? i think they are remakes
I think it's better to just have re-releases or ports rather than remakes. While it would be nice to maybe experience a fighting game's story in remade game with a different
and more focused singleplayer campaign, I don't think it's necessary. Street Fighter X Tekken is a pretty fun game that was ruined by microtransactions, pay to win bullcrap, on disc dlc, and that stupid cube mechanic, but why do a remake? Games like SF2 Super Turbo, SF3 Third Strike, USF4, are still really good. The only time I think a fighting game would need a remake would be one that has a lot of potential, but fails to execute on every other aspect. It would probably have to be a fighting game that only has one entry and is so bad that it would be considered as one of the worst fighting games.
One thing I would love right now would be an anniversary collection of all the Tekken games. Tekken 1's 30th anniversary is coming this year. It would be a great idea.
I rather get Virtua Fighter 6 than a remake or remaster of older installments.
Still don’t understand why capcom wont remake street fighter 1.
I think Capcom was too embarrassed by that game.
They wouldn’t even make any animated adaptations out of it.
I feel like street fighter 2 was remade back in 2008 a version of it was made for the switch too.
One game i think could totally use a remake is the very first street fighter. And give it either a street fighter alpha or sf3 style makeover
You brought up some good points. As for the faithful versus creative direction(2:56), I would believe it would be based on the popularity of the game. Of course Street Fighter fans would want more faithful but what about those fans of less successful titles like Fighter's Destiny or Cyberbots. Would they be happy for more creativity if it meant their beloved game gets a remaster?
I would love to see remake of Kensei: Sacred Fist.
I mean, depends on what you call a remake. Fighting games often use the same core characters so that's essentially a "remake." Mortal Kombat has essentially been a remake series since MK9 as they're rehashing the same story and just changing it up a little.
Funny how this is posted after Breakers Revenge, Asuka 120% and Rage Of The Dragon were announced to get remakes
Iykyk bruh...Shaolin monks? Urban Reign? Ish needs a remake. #napalm99
Fighting games barely do well enough to justify a sequel, let alone a remake.
Wish someone would remaster or make games based on light bringer, Zombie revenge and dynamite deka series
along with a new VF more 3d fighters: Tobal, Bloody Roar (would make for an interesting arena fighter), heck even Toshinden.
Fighting games have a long history of "remakes", depending on what you consider a remake. If improved graphics aren't a necessity, then Capcom "remade" Street Fighter 2 multiple times, adding new mechanics, features, and sometimes characters. Street Fighter Alpha 3 had a number of remakes itself. I assume you don't want to count that type of "remake", which is a defining feature of fighting game history.
Only there literally is. Look at some of the Fatal Fury games and the latest iteration of Virtua Fighter 5. As for what I'd like to see remade? Dead or Alive 1-4. Which also happened with Dead or Alive Dimensions already. It's like whoever wrote the script for this video did no research.
Didn't Super Street Fighter II Turbo had a remake called HD Remix?
all i know is i need a new darkstalkers
The closest you will get is Cross Edge and even that isn't new anymore.
I'd be fine with remasters & ports with rollback netcode. The tekken & mk are leaving money on the table, not just adding netplay and re-releasing older games when they are good whether, and it does well or not
It's a shame I've only seen one fg remake (if I can call it that) and that's King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match.
Rival schools, Bloody roar 4 and soul calibur 2 need remakes.
Street Fighter HDR. VF anniversary and VF 1.5
Crash N-Sane trilogy didn't launch in a good state. Not sure if it's been updated but the gameplay in all three is based off of part 3's controls which makes crash 1 in particular nearly impossible at points
I completed all of those games. You have to jump from the edge of platforms
I for one would love a Tekken 6 remake
How was Crash Bandicoot great example when they changed the clunkyness of original jump into more modern one with more control on landing? Sure they kept levels mostly same and all 3 games in that trilogy mimic the jumps from original games. But crash doesn't feel same to play in remake as it did on ps1 years ago. Especially with all the added help they gave (more checkpoints if u die too much being one of them). There must had been better "puritan" remake comparison than crash.
With fighting games it feels like whenever you would consider a remake, making a sequel instead makes more sense. With a sequel you have more freedoms creatively. But personally I would 100% take rebalanced versions of older games, without any graphics updates etc. With rollback ofc. Lot of older titles are outwardly cool, but it kinda kills the hype when you find out the top 2 dumpster the rest of the cast and whole game is about nailing your taunt cancel infinites.
I just want the Street Fighter 3rd Strike Online Edition treatment to all the games that aren’t available on modern platforms. Preferably with the options found in the home editions and not just ROMs.
Most fighting games are already just remakes of the previous game in the series. Just with some graphical upgrades and a few new characters.
Yes totally. Let's just forget about the addition of new mechanics, new gamemodes. What you are saying is that Street Fighter 2 plays like street fighter 6. It just looks different. And that - my dear friend - is utter bullshit.
I'd say the reboots have happened more often, even going back to the late 90s you had game like Fatal Fury Wild Ambition which essentially re-imagined the 1st game and for the PSX port even added older Ryo Sakazaki (As Mr.Karate) in order to acknowledge what Art of Fighting 2 set up, both games being part of the same universe and also making it that Terry simply beats Geese and he doesn't get knocked out of the tower into his (alleged) death unlike FF1 did. Then you have Samurai Shodown (2019) which also feels a bit like a reboot while having all the favorites, Soul Calibur 6 basically re-imagines the events of Soul Calibur 1 as well. I'd say that approach is better accepted.
The question of whether or not remaking fighting games is a good idea depends largely on the execution as well, SSF2HD while it had a solid idea on re-drawing and re-balancing, the end result it got widely ignored and hated by the community, I'd say that maybe the approach should have included options such as reverting to original graphics and original balancing, while it would defeat some of the purpose of remaking it in the first place, at least it keeps the purists at bay by giving those options, if you look into some of the other fanbases like the KOF ones, there's still purists that stick to vanilla 2k2 instead of moving forward to 2k2 UM which is better, more polished in every way and has a gigantic roster while still staying true to how the game plays. The fanbase can be ridiculously picky for some ridiculous reasons so no amount of improvements would persuade them. Which is why I think they've stayed away from remaking games as the costs would be big for no guarantee of a return on their investment.
you never seen the 18 versions of street fighter 2?
Based Half-Life music
There are a handful of fighting game remakes. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is a remake of Street Fighter 2 with new backgrounds and new HD sprites. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix isn’t a good looking remake, but it is a remake. Soulcalibur when it came to Dreamcast would probably, technically be considered a remake with its new better looking models on Dreamcast. Street Fighter 4 original started as a remake of Street Fighter 2. The final version of Street Fighter 4, while technically not a remake, does have all the original eight World Warriors and four Heavenly King, and was originally sold as a return to Street Fighter 2. Dead or Alive Ultimate on the original Xbox has a remake of Dead or Alive 2. Virtua Fighter 5 got a remake not too long ago, and the original one got one with Remix; I guess you could say Virtua Fighter 2 got a remake with Virtua Fighter Kids too.
Mortal Kombat gets tons of remakes. The Mortal Kombat team themselves have remake the original three games a number of times now. And Shaolin Monks is a retelling of events from the first two games. At this point I think it’s like four of the eleven main Mortal Kombat games are these weird in-universe reboots that let them go over the events of the first three games again.
It is kind of weird there aren’t more remakes. That Switch version of Street Fighter 2 sold pretty well. And while you say 2D is expensive... that’s not exactly true. Vanillaware games are all fairly low budget, with their most expensive being Dragon’s Crown which cost a little over a million dollars. Capcom could easily make some 2D Street Fighter 2 remake like that with a fairly small team and still see a pretty sizable return as a budget title based on how well Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers did on just the Switch. I’m almost surprised Capcom hasn’t done that just to see how well something like that would do in comparison to their bigger budget fighting games.
I want 2 things, both Capcom. A Marvel Vs. Series compilation with everything from Xmen CotA to MVCI or at least MVC2 and 2. Street Fighter Alpha series compilation re-release. Both with rollback and what would be interesting is cross play with the Arcade 1up cabs since they have connectivity. But that is my pie in the sky dream.
disney are stopping that
Hear me out! Tekken 2
With side steps and slightly updated game mechanics
And redone graphics
Keep the music though.
Why not the entire PS1 trilogy?
I would kill for a tekken 3 or tekken 5 remake!!!!❤❤
The part that's missing here is that locals are still huge. While some games have low numbers online, they have high numbers offline. KOF'98 is an example. To this day there are locals all over the world they are not even streamed outside of ppl using their phones. So these locals are built on older games running on cheap hardware so that everyone can play at low to no cost. This is why remakes like the Switch SF2 did not do as well as expected. You would be hard pressed to find locals for it but the older stuff is huge. Remakes are not really wanted by the fans or the devs. The fans of older games want what they know. The devs want to sell the next thing.
I'd rather see a Virtua Fighter compilation on modern hardware vs a tweek or update. Updates just next stop. In the end your're still going to need house rules to balance.
Every iteration of a Fighting Game is a remake. New roster, new mechanics, sometines new graphics/engine.
We need Bloody Roar and Rival Schools back 🔥
dude think about how happy people would be with a soul calibur 2 remake with link for the switch 2 maybe that's how it can be brought back from the dead :)
Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate
Super Street Fighter III Turbo HD Remix
Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary
So... they don't count as remakes?
bushido blade
street fighter 2 HD edition
Darkstalkers
Street Fighter Alpha 2 is Remake of Street Fighter Alpha
Actually Street Fighter Alpha / Zero is the unofficial remake of Street Fighter 1 and 2
Technically VF5 and SSF2 have remakes.
Same reason they don't do remakes for sports games. Would absolutely love a "here comes the pain" remake
We want Bloody Roar and we got animality in Mortal Kombat LOL.
Street Fighter 2 HD Remix is exhibit A why remakes tend to not work. The visual overhaul didn't go over well with fans, the art style was too different. And the rebalancing attempts were ignored completely, and fans and pros just played the original Super Turbo mode with original sprites. Remaking fighting games is like remaking chess, even if the roster is broken, changing the gameplay usually isn't welcome. The best way to remake a fighting game is to just take the old story and make a new game. Kind of like Soulcalibur 6
Probably better to simply release them as part of packages of remasters, because remaking something with shinier graphics or changed functionality... well, that's just taking away the mechanics and quirks of the game that the fans liked. I feel like fighting games really are games that are of their times- some games can get a new coat of paint and QoL-changes, but do that with a fighting game and you just take away what the fans want from them. No way to run a business, that.
Street Fighter 2 HD Remaster bro.
Wait... isn't Soul Calibur 6 a Remake of Soul Calibur 1?
I would pay at good 70 dollars to buy a Soul Calibur 2 remake
I created one of the most original FIGHTING GAMEs of all time, and very few people supported me.
Most people dont understand, that unless you support us INDIE DEVS the FUTURE is going to be BLEAK!
DoA2 Ultimate exist
Street Fighter itself should get a Remake based on the Shadaloo Saga 1-5.
I always wanted to reboot Street Fighter Guilty Gear-style for main chapters (I, II & III)
and RE Engine-style for the sub-sequels (Alpha, IV, & V)
Dead or alive need com back
Mk9 and mk1 are technically remakes.
Street fighter 2?
I was not entertaining the idea then you played footage of Tekken 4. Then i went okay... that actually i like to play a tekken 4 remake.
Street fighter hd
Except killer instinct, mortal kombat and street fighter have been remade
Every fighting game sequel is literally a remake😅
Remaking a fighting game isn't easy like other genres. Older fighting games have been known for stiff and clunky controls and mechanics that aged very poorly today. Hence why many games dev would have new releases that improves and evolves rather than remaking the old ones with modern controls.
There's no point, The Tekken formula or its "core gameplay"was reached with T5. Harada & T4 misjudged what made T3 great by messing with that core gameplay but that lead to Tekken 5 which is basically Tekken 3 but with new stages, new characters, new costumes etc.
Tekken 8 has rage & heat but the "core gameplay" remains the same as the earlier titles which is why legacy players are so damn strong going from T7 to T8 lol.
There are no remakes..... Except:
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: HD Remix /Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers
Virtua Fighter 20th Anniversary
Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown
Samurai Shodown 5: Perfect
Also technically:
The Dreamcast Port of Soul Calibur
The PS2 Port of Tekken Tag 2
I enjoyed RE2make, but it does not feel like RE2. Also, it felt unfinished/rushed, there was room for a lot more content, without spoiling too much, the later part of the game felt very stripped down. RE3make was even worse, well, it's not even fair to compare since that was obviously just a quick cash-grab by capcom.
Eh, pass on remakes, as much as I love the Bloody Roar 3 duology (c'mon, Primal Fury and Extreme are the same game, let's be honest here) I'd rather see Bloody Roar 5 be a soft reboot like MK9 so we could actually get to see what happened during the plot beyond trying to pick out which arcade endings are canon and what order they happen in. Also to bring back Fox and maybe make his fighting style actually noticeably different from Jenny, like Kohryu and Bakuryu, Long and Shenlong, or Yugo and Fang.
Oh, and Mitsuko. Boarmom deserves some love.
