I live for the grain, but seriously while short this animatic makes such an impact, I genuinely want to know what happened between these two characters.
I remember that when Craig McCracken was starting Kid Cosmic. They presented a focus group of kids an episode and realized that the kids were reacting to it as expected even though it's just an animatic. He noticed that it still worked and resonated to the focus group even with the limited movements, it being an animatic and all. That's when they decided to make that the overall style of the show and it worked wonderfully, since he love dthe idea of it making it look like a comic. They mixed on 3s and 2s in animating and most of them were literally just animatic style as long as it hit the beats. Seeing this, It also reminded me of that. I think this will also allow you to get your ideas down faster.
Oh I'd watch a series like this, yes. The polish doesn't matter to me at all. If there's a story, I'd rather have that than a single 3 minute video that takes a few years to produce. I'm always experimenting with speed vs looks. I don't really want to go back to comics, but as a solo artist it's not possible to create full flesh animation alone. Even though I love being part of a team, with personal stories I just want to be able to tell them fast yet visually engaging.
"I don't really want to go back to comics..." Could you explain your reason, please? As a comic book artist, I'd like to hear about this medium limitations or other reasons (less the obvious, like the lack of movement and sound). Not to judge. Just to be more aware of my "medium of choice".
I think the tone makes it more watchable because the stark black & white won't strain my eyes as much, making it easier to watch longer form content. Ultimately, I think it would come down to the story itself as to whether or not I would watch it as a series, but visually I think it works! I bet you could experiement a lot with colour tones and stylization depending on the scene and mood you're going for. Lot's of room for exploration here!
I remember seeing these characters, or at least versions of these characters, in a few of your videos before and I always wanted to know more about their story. I like the style in this animatic test a lot. While I wouldn't say that you captured the manga tone look to the point where it looks like a manga come to life, I think that your approach gives it an old timey and gritty look that fits well with the grounded story you are aiming to tell. The storyboarding is very well done too, the last 10 seconds being especially cinematic with silent storytelling. Overall, I think this has a lot of potential and will make for a good way to tell your story economically without burning yourself out.
Totally down for this! When it comes down to using limited animation for my animatic series, you’re able to set a vibe just as easily even if it was fully animated. Plus it helps you draw better poses and expressions.
I'd watch it just as an animatic for sure. To be fair, I love the grainy look; for others, it may not be their thing. In any case, unless the style is super distracting for whatever reason (which this is not), what matters to me is whether or not the story is engaging, and in this case I very much would like to know the 'why' and the 'what happens next'.
Sorry I didn't know where else to ask, I was wondering that if I were to try and plan the couse of many years of my life towards getting a career in tv animation (specifcally 2D), what places I should consider. I figue that upon building my skill sets it should be aimed towards a specific company. I want to know what my ultimate goal should be, currently a novice animator with a very limited skill set wanting to actively improve; however I wanted a long-term goal in mind to strive for. I value your input and would like your advice. (FYI my skill set is no where near standard I just wanted to have an idea of where I wanted to go with developing myself as I proceed to practice and learn).
I applaud the stylistic experimentation, and I think that as a mood test this works quite well, but unfortunately the manga half tone effect is way too small/fine, which is both inaccurate to what actual manga illustrations, where even when reproduced in the tankobon format are quite recognizable as a pattern of dots and not as noise turning into grayscale tone, and the fact that when this small, they look terrible at lower resolution, even at 1080p, in great part due to youtube's compression not dealing with fine noise like input like this. The size of the textures used for tones need to be 2 to 3 times larger than they are now to look good and intentional while avoiding excessive compression artifacts.
I think everything is great here. I'd love to see this story in this format! But did you know something really interesting? When comic book publishers made 'motion comics,' with SOME of them pretty similar to animatics, the comic book audience hated them. I bet if they had marketed them as 'animatics' for the animation audience, things would have turned out very differently.
@@frostyfantrash i asked my question first, it should be answered first. He drew a lot of anthropomorphic characters, but he did so in a children’s animation manner, not like this. This one is very suggestive, to say the least.
@@ivanmatveyev13 ok, but being a furry isn't decided by whether you draw anthro realistically or not, nor by how "suggestive" it is. i don't know if toniko is or is not a furry, that's up to him, i just know he's been drawing characters like this for several years.

The character designs in Kid Cosmic really help the animatics being used as the final product.

That looks like something i would watch. I like to see this be a short tv show like Helluva Boss, Lackadaisical or Hazbin Hotel ❤
God i was sad when it ended, i love these designs

Digging the paper/grain aesthetic style, nice work dude.
I love the mood. I wanna cry, even though I don't really know what's happening.
I really like this idea! Says so much in such a short time. Music was top notched. I hope to see more of these animatics
I'm speechless...in a good way!
I think you should finish this, in just one minute we understand everything, no need to add more, it's already a great short film
Need this video in part 2❤
Amazing !

Looks awesome, film grain looks great, you should livestream your process!
I like the
mascot.
i'd watch it. Good editing and pacing with solid cinematography. I dig it. The sound fx add a lot as well. Did you do that part too?
Yooo I love it!
advice on sound design???
i'm planing on making a short and dont know the first thing about sound
Istg this scene 0:59 ive had a dream about oml
Cool I love your videos
Love the vibe, but the film grain was a bit distracting. Maybe dial it back by like 20-30%?

Hepcats (the comic) vibes
What program did you use?
Hello there
You furry now?
is that a bad thing? also, have you been living under a rock?
