I have a lot of screen printing experience. It is best to always have a squeegee that is wider than your design to prevent varying thickness and visible lines from printing. I strongly prefer clear packing tape but I tend to print many copies of something and may need something more waterproof. A $1 spatula is my favorite tool to apply ink. If you do many pieces at once, let them air dry to the touch and then toss then into a clothes drier for about half an hour and it does a nice job of heat setting Speedball water-based inks. It may help if doing a free-hand process like this to make a painter's tape box the size of the silkscreen frame onto the shirt to help you target where the frame will be laid down before you get to wet inks in addition to using the registration marks. It helps to practice on something first like an old sheet or other worthless fabric -or even practice printing on paper, like newsprint or newspaper - so you do not stress on messing up and destroying a t-shirt.
@@nicolepena6091 I tape off my edges using clear packing tape instead of blue painter's tape. A friend of mine that left a screen burned permanently used duct tape.
I would advise that anyone who tries this to put a firm surface inside of the shirt like a wood board along with felt over the top. The board prevents the ink from bleeding through to the back of the shirt, and the felt prevents ink from bleeding across your print. Put the tape on the back side of the screen so you can have a nice even pull with the squeegee. Use a larger squeegee- you should only need to do one pull per color.
I am a graphic design student who is hoping to stay around clothing design, screen printing had always been a distant dream of mine. I tried it in high school and LOVED it. I’ve had the cricut for a while now and had no idea I could do this! I’m ordering everything I need right now!
You have opened my eyes to the endless possibilities I can do with my cricut and creativity. I have wanted to make shirts, but wasn't sure how to get them done this way, and the registration marks a plus. I couldn't figure out how to attach. You made so easy for me to understand it. Thanks!🤗
Great video! I detack my transfer tape a bit by sticking it on my trouser leg a few times before use. Makes it much easier to remove from the vinyl. I also use the same piece multiple times before throwing away.
Definitely works, I would caution on this application though, the reason it works, is it picks up tiny fibers, these fibers could affect the screen printing process. Just a thought!
@@DIYAlex You can also try the Oratape LT95 which is a light tack clear transfer tape. It's designed for wall art vinyl (631/638) but will work for this too
Thank You Alex, I haven't screen printed in many years. I bought the stuff today to do a single color screen print and then I stumbled across your video.. Thank you. You present this well.
Thanks for the informational tutorial! I've been doing screen printing with photo emulsion for awhile and finally made the jump to a Cricut Explore Air 2 a few days ago.
Screen printing was my main focus in school and trying to transfer using all the professional supplies to a home based business has been hard but this is so handy! I love the registration marks and grouping your images. This helped me so much- thank you. Some tips I have if you’re using your screens multiple times is to use packing tape in place of painters tape and put it on the back side of the screen. It’s easier and stands up to more. Also, you can get screen savers that are basically a really sticky patch for holes in your screen. Helps them last so much longer. Keep up the good work! I’ll be using your tips in the future for sure.
Also, we were taught to put the ink at the bottom and do one light sweep up and one firm swipe down for best results. I’ve found this is the easiest method for quick and effortless results. Question- do you use a heat press or an easy press? Thanks!
DIY Alex which heat press do you use? I’m definitely in the market for one. But I have strayed a bit from heat pressed inks and gone more toward natural dyes which just need to be steamed. I’m still curious though.
I really applaud anyone who uses screen printing but it’s surly not for me It’s too time consuming so I will stick to heat press and vinyl. But this design and t shirt is beautiful 💯
I am debating if I want to screen print or use a heat press . I am hearing horror stories using Transfer Express . Who would you recomend going through
Thank you so much for this video. I have a small print shop set up with Cricut Air Explorer 2 and Easy Press 2. I've found that more of my customers prefer screen print to vinyl. I didn't know I could screen print with what I have already. You showed me the light. Thank you.

This is absolutely amazing thank you so much you have no idea I want to do screen printing so bad and got turned off by leaving it in the dark this is so much easier you’re the best. Probably answer this question 1000 times. So you can make up to 10 to 20 shirts without fast you work after you have to clean it. How many times can you use it after that.? Before the screen starts to break? I saw aluminum screens on Amazon what’s the difference thank you so much for your time
You're welcome! I'm so glad you found it helpful! Yes, you can make several shirts at once before having to clean your screen and make another stencil. You can't reuse the stencil, but you can reusable the screen until it rips, gets clogged, or gets worn out. The aluminum screens are larger and more expensive, but they are also more durable.
Great tutorial, I was trying to figure out how to use multiple colors and had a fail when I needed a white base so I could use red ink for a black shirt and my design was off just enough to look bad. One tip for everyone when adding the vinyl to the back of the screen a put a large hard cover book under it to give myself a harder surface to burnish onto.
Thanks for the awesome tips on the registration marks and the tray for the squeegee! I usually lay it on a plate but I LOVE the idea that it stands up!!
One of the easier videos ive seen on how to do this. I also wonder if you can use the emollient to make a permanent screen using the stencil at hand. Idk if that made any sense.
Thank you, I’m glad you found it as easy as I did! You can actually use HTV to create a permanent stencil if there are designs you use all the time. Just keep in mind you’ll have to change the frame or buy multiple frames if you want to me able to do more designs ☺️
Danielle Hill I have not tried it myself, but the video I watched (it’s on the channel Pigskins and Pigtails) showed applying HTV to the screen and it worked fine. I would probably only press 5 seconds at a time though to make sure it doesn’t sit it in the heat too long.
I’m so fascinated by this. Thank you for the super informative video. Also, diy screen printing ASMR should totally be a thing. The noises are super satisfying. 😂
Sweet! I’ve found that the more “permanent” vinyls work best with screen printing. I’ve never had a problem removing the stencil after a short soak-the screen is so porous that it isn’t really permanent.
I'm just learning about screen printing - watched some videos, bought a Speedball Kit aind stumbled upon your video for the Cricut; Just wanted to say I loved how you lined up with the key blocks; very interesting and nicely done. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your knowledge. It is appreciated!
Hi! Good tutorial! Thank you! Can i check with you on how you wash off the paint? Does that mean we can keep using the same screen board for many projects?
No problem! Just use warm water to rinse the screen. I like to use my kitchen sink and use the sprayer. You can use the screen several times! I happened to rip mine in this tutorial, but that doesn't happen often. When it does, you can buy screen replacements also.
If you have multiple shirts, you can pick up the screen and use it on the next shirt, but you can’t let the ink dry on the screen. So when that starts to happen you should peel the stencil off and wash it off with water.
I’m brand spanking new to the Cricut crafting therefore this won’t be my first project. LOL my Cricut is very new, in the box. I really appreciate you taking time to do this. you are amazing. Thank you. Ps I saved your video for when I’m a more intermediate Cricut crafter.
Welcome to the Crafty Fam Danielle! I’m so glad you found it helpful! After you heat set the shirt, you can wash it as normal. I like to let my shorts hang dry, but you can dry them in the dryer if you prefer.
I want to dive into screen printing, I’ve watched numerous videos and some have to use a special light in a dark room I don’t have to do that with this method ?
Yes that’s correct. I used a water basked screen printing ink to keep it super simple ☺️. The other kind of screen printing involves things like photo emulsion, etc.
So far the ink has had amazing longevity for me because I haven’t worn out anything I’ve made yet and I wear my screen printed shirts ALL the time! I think you get more use out of a jar of ink than you do out of HTV. But It’s hard to compare head to head. It’s definitely cheaper for projects when you’re making multiple shirts using the same design.
Summer Slone you can go watch a UA-cam video by KenyonKen something like that around 1 year ago (Jan 2019) he made that video showing STEP BY STEP and he also shows a DIY exposure light you can make on the very low low. At first I never understood screen printing, You explained it perfectly 👌🏽I have a cricut machine and make stickers :) also, you can add a square shape outline around your design to have a perfectly shaped square border line cut around your design( if that makes sense ??)😯
An easier way to get the transfer tape off is to place a book under the screen to give it a sturdier surface. I use Chalk Couture ink. Works great and you have a great selection of colors.
Loved the tutorial, I’m new to screen printing and watching as many tutorials as I can find. You make it seem so easy. I would like to know if there is a method of screen printing I could use for one design that I can use to make multiple prints at different times?
You can make multiple shirts at once with the same screen. You can find the tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/JJN5hoWwyWE/v-deo.html If you want to reuse the screen I have a new video coming out Tuesday to show you how to do that!
This video was so helpful in two ways. Working with Cricut and trying screen printing. I did not have that major seed money to start a full blown screen business. (over $3,000 if done professionally)
Wow I didn'tknow it was possible and this easy. Bought my cricket machine hoping to be a Tshirt designer. Let's see where it takes me. I like your video . Thank you
To get it off easily, you have to pick a little dirt with the transfer tape so the adhesion of the tape to the vinyl won't be as strong as the adhesion of the vinyl to the screen. You can pick dirt by sticking the transfer tape to a fabric and peeling off a couple of times to pick lint, hence reducing the adhesion.
Whew, my eyes watered a little for you when you showed the rip in your screen! Brilliant idea to group by color in CD, and using registration marks. I've been staring at a design I have, trying to figure it all out. This video helped tremendously. However, you've convinced me that freezer paper stenciling, especially if doing just a few shirts, is certainly the way to go for me. THANK YOU for making this video, and for sacrificing your screen for us, heeee!
Great job. You do know you can get new mesh for that frame don’t you? You don’t have to get a whole new one. 😊 Also, if you are going to make a bunch of shirts, use HTV. then you can rinse your screen off between a few shirts or if you have to stop in the middle of printing. Then you don’t have to keep cutting and weeding and re applying 651. When you are done just replace the mesh on the screen. Much quicker.
Yep! I replaced this screen after this video. Thanks for the tip! I prefer to recur the vinyl because the next screens are kind of pricey, but it’s definitely good to keep in mind!
Few bits of advice flood off the screen and a push stroke with water based ink will put down ink better also use a hing style clamp if your not going to use a regular screen press all of which will make life easier and put out a better product
I am so glad that I found your channel! You are one of the best DIYers I have found. Clear instructions, not a lot of unnecessary chatter and a pleasant voice! Thank you!! Why didn't you do the circle sticker on the neckline?
So, I'm JUST NOW starting to learn about this amazing creative community. I haven't even bought a cutting machine yet. But, does the paint last long on the shirts? How many washes before it starts to fade or are these types of shirts not intended to be washed? Does vinyl print last longer than the paint? What is everyone's preference?
Welcome the Crafty Fam Jonelle! The ink is permanent once it is dried and then heat set, so it lasts a long time. I’ve been screen printing since March of this year and I haven’t worn out any of my screen printed shirts yet! I would say that heat transfer vinyl (HTV is what is used for shirts) is just as durable as screen printing 🙂. When done correctly, it can last longer than the shirt itself.
Hello!! I wanted to screen print on the front and the back of the same shirt. Do you have any tips or recommendations? Thank you so much!! All of your tutorials are so helpful!! :)
your voice completely changed mid video lol. It was kinda funny. Almost like a high pitched squeakyness. Great job! Can't wait to try this out. Love the idea of mass shirts quickly.
You will have better results if you iron your shirts first because it will lay fabric flat. Rather than using a heat press, you should use a flash dryer. I would also suggest taping it off from the opposite side.
I just wanted to make sure I heard you correctly.. Did you say to heat press at 320 for 40 seconds? Loved your video. Not too long, good speed of instruction.
Thank you for your videos! I am just starting the screen printing process. I have a shirt I am working on, that has front shirt pocket design and a large design on the back. I have completed the backside and it's definitely dried. However, my question is...should I heat set in the back before I add the front design? I don't want to mess the shirt up if possible (I mean I did have an oops where the ink seeped through the tape-but I fixed it with adding another design lol). I wanted to try and ward off any additional mistakes before I move onto doing shirts for my sons business (bless his heart for coming to his mama instead of a professional place haha). Any suggestions/help/comments are greatly appreciated! Thank you again!
As long as it’s dry before working on the other side, it doesn’t matter ☺️. Heat setting is just there to keep the ink from coming off in the washer, so you can wait and heat set one side and then the other if you want!
i am self teaching myself how to do t-shirts. what are the items do i need. there is sooooo much out there. what's the best cutter do i need? where can i get? help please by the way i have been watching you for weeks now. i have learned a lot from you. Thank you you rock!!!!!

Is this how u make all ur shirts? Imagine that’s pretty time consuming
No, I only prefer screen printing over vinyl when I have a few shirts to do at a time. This tutorial just shows one as an example ☺️
Can you use the vinyl cutout on the screen over and over? For example, How many shirts can you make with that same design just using that stencil?
Thank u for the step by step it really helped me out. I am just learning. Ur a great teacher. ❤
You’re welcome! Thanks so much!
Can you reuse the stencil on the screen before washing it, or is it a 1 and done type of craft?
If you have multiple shirts, you can pick up the screen and use it on the next shirt, but you can’t let the ink dry on the screen. So when that starts to happen you should peel the stencil off and wash it off with water.
I’m brand spanking new to the Cricut crafting therefore this won’t be my first project. LOL my Cricut is very new, in the box. I really appreciate you taking time to do this. you are amazing. Thank you. Ps I saved your video for when I’m a more intermediate Cricut crafter.
Also How would you wash the shirt
Welcome to the Crafty Fam Danielle! I’m so glad you found it helpful! After you heat set the shirt, you can wash it as normal. I like to let my shorts hang dry, but you can dry them in the dryer if you prefer.
Burn the what?! LOL
Love the video though ❤️
Haha! She said burnish it...;) but the first time she said it was definitely a "whaaat?" moment!
Hahah thank you for clarifying that!
Same thing I was trying to figure out😂😂😂😂
Nice!! I see purple is your favorite color
Yes it is ☺️
I want to dive into screen printing, I’ve watched numerous videos and some have to use a special light in a dark room I don’t have to do that with this method ?
Yes that’s correct. I used a water basked screen printing ink to keep it super simple ☺️. The other kind of screen printing involves things like photo emulsion, etc.
Does the ink have the same longevity and is it more expensive?
So far the ink has had amazing longevity for me because I haven’t worn out anything I’ve made yet and I wear my screen printed shirts ALL the time!
I think you get more use out of a jar of ink than you do out of HTV. But It’s hard to compare head to head. It’s definitely cheaper for projects when you’re making multiple shirts using the same design.
You can just set your screen outside in the sunlight to process your uv screens.
Summer Slone you can go watch a UA-cam video by KenyonKen something like that around 1 year ago (Jan 2019) he made that video showing STEP BY STEP and he also shows a DIY exposure light you can make on the very low low. Like you, I’ve watched TONS of videos because I have a small T-shirt company and I’ve been doing heat transfer I am ready to move on to screen printing and so far that has been the most helpful video and he really goes in detail.
This Is By Far One Of The Best Videos On Screen Printing I've Came Across. Great Work And Explaining/ Instructions. I Haven't Started Screen Printing Yet But I Am In The Process In Learning And You've Definitely Helped And Inspired Me Thanks A Lot ! And Also Can You Do A Video On An Step By Step Process On Vinyl Cutting
You're welcome! I'm so glad you liked it! If you want to see videos on vinyl, check out my Cricut for Beginners playlist! I think you'll really enjoy it: ua-cam.com/play/PLdqAY6wTCkWDnlGdjImiztoBtt276M1xy.html
No way!!!! between 16:19 and 17:05 you turn into a different person with a different voice!!
lol yes my voice does have a couple different pitches 😂
Totally agree! Sounds like her daughter jumped in for a bit to do the voice over. 😂😉
I don’t have a daughter. I’m just human 🤷🏼♀️
I just want to say thank you for the tutorial. You didn’t have to share but I thank you, you did! First time watching and new subscriber!
I'm so glad it helped! Welcome!
I’m I the only one who is hearing two different voices in this video
My voice has more than one pitch, but I promise it's me speaking through the whole video :).
DIY Alex oh ok! I thought I was hearing two different people
I’m new to this. What is a screen? Where can I get a screen?
@@donnaann5989 If you watch the video, you'll see what a screen is and how to use it. You can find it on Amazon here: Speedball 10x14 Screen: amzn.to/2I4hhGP
Where have you been all my life!!!!!! Thanks soooooo much
You’re welcome! ❤️☺️ I hope you’ll consider subscribing so you can learn more about screen printing!
At first I never understood screen printing, You explained it perfectly 👌🏽I have a cricut machine and make stickers :)
also, you can add a square shape outline around your design to have a perfectly shaped square border line cut around your design( if that makes sense ??)😯
I’m so glad it was helpful!
An easier way to get the transfer tape off is to place a book under the screen to give it a sturdier surface. I use Chalk Couture ink. Works great and you have a great selection of colors.
Oh that’s a great tip! Thanks so much!
Loved the tutorial, I’m new to screen printing and watching as many tutorials as I can find. You make it seem so easy. I would like to know if there is a method of screen printing I could use for one design that I can use to make multiple prints at different times?
You can make multiple shirts at once with the same screen. You can find the tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/JJN5hoWwyWE/v-deo.html
If you want to reuse the screen I have a new video coming out Tuesday to show you how to do that!
You can look up pre burned screens and they basically make the screens with the design you want and you can re use it as much as you want.
Thanks for this idea! I had never thought of screen printing with the Cricut! Great idea! I will for sure be trying this out.
It’s a lot of fun! ☺️
The design looked stunning!
Thank you!
This video was so helpful in two ways. Working with Cricut and trying screen printing. I did not have that major seed money to start a full blown screen business. (over $3,000 if done professionally)
I'm so glad you found it helpful! I agree, screen printing this way is super cheap compared to the typical screen printing equipment.
Nice tips.Extremely helpful.Thanks
You’re welcome!
Love this...so many are going into sublimation but I like this more!
It’s nice to have multiple methods to use for your projects!
Wow I didn'tknow it was possible and this easy. Bought my cricket machine hoping to be a Tshirt designer. Let's see where it takes me. I like your video . Thank you
You’re welcome! I’m so glad it was helpful!
@@DIYAlex Hello , How long did you wait between Two colors before screen printing?
To get it off easily, you have to pick a little dirt with the transfer tape so the adhesion of the tape to the vinyl won't be as strong as the adhesion of the vinyl to the screen. You can pick dirt by sticking the transfer tape to a fabric and peeling off a couple of times to pick lint, hence reducing the adhesion.
I will have to try that! Great tip!
I really like how you give advise from your experience. You are a great teacher. Thanks for posting the links. I’m going to look for a starter kit. 😁
Thank you so much! I’m so glad it was helpful for you!
Awesome tutorial... very easy to understand... thank you for knowledge
Thank you! I'm so glad it was helpful!
Nice work with a beautiful hand
Thank you!
This was very helpful for me. Thank you for making this content.
You’re welcome! 😊
Your tutorial saved my life! I’ve been trying to figure out how to do this and almost gave up. So glad I found your channel! Thank you!
That's a great feeling! I'm so glad you found my channel too :). Let me know if I can answer any more questions for you!
Thanks for this! I did skip ahead alot as its quite long but nicely showed how to do it
Thank you!
Haha yes it was stressful but it’s also real life! You’re welcome, I’m glad it was helpful!
Thank u for teaching me this method to screen print :) I did it..! YOU DA BOMB
Yay!! You’re welcome!
tip , use heat gun to make removal of the vinyl easier. I saw this idea for removing sticky tape from the edges of canvas or panel after resin pours.
I'll have to give that a try! Thanks!
Great job. You do know you can get new mesh for that frame don’t you? You don’t have to get a whole new one. 😊
Also, if you are going to make a bunch of shirts, use HTV. then you can rinse your screen off between a few shirts or if you have to stop in the middle of printing.
I will try the tshirt looks wonderful
Thank you!
Very very cool! Thank you for making this video.
Few bits of advice flood off the screen and a push stroke with water based ink will put down ink better also use a hing style clamp if your not going to use a regular screen press all of which will make life easier and put out a better product
Awesome, thank you for the tips Shawn!
I am so glad that I found your channel! You are one of the best DIYers I have found. Clear instructions, not a lot of unnecessary chatter and a pleasant voice! Thank you!!
Why didn't you do the circle sticker on the neckline?
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that! I didn't know about the sticker trick yet when I made this tutorial.
Make sure you let it dry completely before printing the other side, but I've done it and it works fine! :) You're welcome!
your voice completely changed mid video lol. It was kinda funny. Almost like a high pitched squeakyness. Great job! Can't wait to try this out. Love the idea of mass shirts quickly.
Mariel Ortiz-Beliard was looking in the comments to see if anyone else noticed lol
Loved this video. You make it look so simple. Looking forward to more. 👍🏻
Thanks! It is pretty simple, I promise!
You will have better results if you iron your shirts first because it will lay fabric flat. Rather than using a heat press, you should use a flash dryer. I would also suggest taping it off from the opposite side.
Thanks for the tips!
Hi. Thank you for the video. Can you please tell me if there is an advantage or screen printing over using HTV?
When making multiple shirts it’s faster and cheaper
Hi, Thank you Love the video, I liked the way you explained it step by step, now I feel more confident in trying it with my design.
You got this! Thanks for watching!
I just wanted to make sure I heard you correctly.. Did you say to heat press at 320 for 40 seconds? Loved your video. Not too long, good speed of instruction.
Thank you! Yes that's correct.
Heat setting is just there to keep the ink from coming off in the washer, so you can wait and heat set one side and then the other if you want!
i am self teaching myself how to do t-shirts.
what are the items do i need. there is sooooo much out there.
what's the best cutter do i need? where can i get? help please
by the way i have been watching you for weeks now. i have learned a lot from you. Thank you
you rock!!!!!
Thanks for watching! There is a lot to learn, a lot more than I can respond to in a UA-cam comment. Have you watched my Cricut for Beginners playlist? I think it would answer a lot of your questions! ua-cam.com/play/PLdqAY6wTCkWDnlGdjImiztoBtt276M1xy.html
Wow, your design looks amazing. I’m very new to this and I learned so much from you here. Thank you so much. Peace and Blessings 😊🥰👐🏽👍🏽
I’m so glad! You’re welcome!
Great video, thank you so much. Please can you tell me the name of the transfer tape you use again? thank you so much again, you explain everything brilliantly! X
This is the transfer tape I use. Use ALEX5 to save 5% on your order! www.143vinyl.com/Clear-Medium-Tack-Transfer-Tape-12-inches-by-30-Feet.html?partner=403469
This is such a wonderful tutorial. Thank you so much for posting!!!
You’re welcome Elaine! I’m happy to do it!
Great video!! Do you need to put any kind of layer inside the shirt to prevent a bleed through of the ink?
I don’t use anything and I never have issues, but you can use parchment paper or cardboard if you want.
omg I had to watch this 3x this was funny
What’s funny about it?
The most helpful videos!!!!!!!!
Amazing. Looks very nice!
Thank you very much!
It's a really good idea! You're a genius : )
Thank you!
really great videos on screen printing! if i want to do about 50 shirts at a time, will i need to remove the vinyl and wash the screen between every ~15 shirts or is there a way to keep the vinyl attached so i don’t have to redo this every time?
People say you can put HTV on the screens, but I haven’t tried that. I would make reusable screens like I did in this video! ua-cam.com/video/n2I1VBMZDCs/v-deo.html
This was extremely helpful. Thank you for posting.
You’re welcome! I’m so glad you liked it!
