      I thought the "water" or "aqua" debate and transwomen was something I thought Destiny had already left behind with the philosphy Phd. I mean the guy who had the debate with Vaush. And Destiny seemed to accept the philosophers position that the essence to what people refer to is the same.

    When someone doesn't engage with the hypothetical it usually means...
    They view hypotheticals as word traps since their entire argument tends to fall apart when they are introduced.
    Their IQs are too low to understand the hypothetical which triggers them and actives their ego.
    They then INSTINCTIVELY interrupt and try to destroy your use of hypotheticals. It's Kryponite to them.

      @rs4there 2 роки тому +2

      What if someone throws out hypotheticals about rare/unique scenarios while presenting them as reflective of the general rule? I always shut these down and explain why I'm shutting them down, but I think it's perfectly fine not to engage with certain hypotheticals as long as you state why you're doing it. I'll agree that it looks bad if you seem to be trying to talk your way past a hypothetical though.

    • @jeanlucbergman479
      @jeanlucbergman479 2 роки тому +9

      @@rs4there If someone is using a hypothetical or analogy that doesn't reflect the principle it needs to be pointed out WHY its not reflective of said principle. If it doesn't fit they can provide a counter hypothetical that better reflects their principle.
      Most people who don't understand hypotheticals and complain when they're proposed aren't retorting with explanations as to why they are disingenuous or poorly framed, they just claim they're pointless as Kelly does or that they don't like engaging with them.
      If you properly understand basic analytic philosophy and use of tools like analogies, you'll typically be more than happy to engage with one even if rhetorically it might not be in your favour. Its a basic building block of good faith debate or conversation.

      If Germany had an area of 1,000 square miles, and had one camel per square mile, how many camels would be in Germany?
      Liberals tended to answer “1,000”
      Conservatives tended to get hung up on whether Germany was actually 1,000 square miles or whether there was actually 1 camel per square mile.

    I'm just gonna say this right now. No sarcasm from me. No trolling from me. Kelly has unlocked the ultimate convo/debate grift. What's impressive about her is that she's mastered the art of not giving a fuck to actually engage properly whenever it suits her, and she expertly presents herself as someone that makes you question whether she's intentionally obtuse or just plain dumb. I can't even tell which is true, and that in itself is part of her grift. Add the occasional unwarranted, aggressive yelling over people immediately followed up with the cute little girl voice and what we have is perhaps the most quintessential alpha grifter of debate tactics of immaculate proportions. This is because Kelly is an amorphous chameleon, which can be seen as a compliment to her in a way. She's able to be just coherent enough in her points to, let's say, articulate that the term "Nazi" is very rigidly obvious, but when Destiny challenges her by using the vagueness of dictionary definitions she herself sees as valid, she'll pull a British rendition of Lav overreacting to a pretty logical point, fake giggle and everything.
    No part of me is kidding when I say this: You can have Kelly debate PhD professionals and people like Bertrand Russell, and she'll demolish all of them in a heartbeat. Her phony little act makes her unbeatable because it gives her the benefit of outlasting people, and she comes off as the last man standing when she goes all, "Aww. They left the call cuz they mad." I think she likes the impression that people disengage because it makes it look like they conceded and just can't handle the heat, so she looks like the winner, even though the real reason is because she's not worth taking seriously. Maybe it's because of her self-admitted "neurodivergence" or whatever, but I'll give the girl credit. Her ability to morph from coherent debater to obnoxious, insufferable child allows her to comfortably hang with people way above her station in intellectual discourse, such as Destiny and ChudLogic. She's able to slither her way into discussions about pseudoscience and Nazis, and her attitude allows her to hold her own. And that is absolutely impressive.

There is a lot of ambiguity not present in European or Middle Eastern languages so all I can do is say something and hope that the other person gets what I meant. Surprisingly, usually they do. Japanese is a heavily contextual language, so a random sentence screamed into the void might not mean much.

    Rem failing to parse what Destiny argues isn't surprising at all. It regularly happens when a person lost in philosophical terms debates philosophy with a person who takes a practical approach to language use.
    For example, I might say something like "I don't think this behavior has a lot of utility" meaning "I don't think this behavior serves any concrete and specific goal", whereas someone like Rem will immediately jump to the conclusion that you're talking about utility as it's used in Utilitarianism simply because you're having a philosophical conversation generally.
    Not the best example, but I've experienced this countless times in conversation with people who have formal philosophy education.

    • @synlion

      Could be they hear the term utility and jump to utilitarianism, then usually their immediate association would be to actions that produce well-being vis a vis actions that produce suffering.
      It wasn't the best example mind you nor meant to be an example of a specific mix-up.
      The issue is just that, like with sociology, the field regularly repurposes words and certain people in academia tend to struggle decoupling their "in the literature" mode of thinking.
      Perhaps a better example would be the distinct usage between terms like patriarchy as used in feminist theory vs anthropology vs colloquial use.
      In FT, it's often losely used to describe any society where men, ostensibly, hold the majority of official political power. In anthropology it's used to describe societies in which leadership positions are exclusive to males and passed down through male lineage. In colloquial terms people are all over the place.

      the biggest prerequisite for being able to distill complex concepts down simply and efficiently really just comes down to having a holistic understanding of the concepts. the reason we associate this ability with people who really know the material is because it's often the case that if you have achieved mastery in a specific area you will have such a throrough understanding that you're able to be reductive about it, since if anyone calls you out on it you would be able to elaborate.
      the issue is this: some topics are really difficult to distill in this way; and that becomes much more likely the more specialized any particular person is in any given field. this is the whole reason there's a distinction necessary between people like science communicators and regular ole 'scientists' in a given field. effective communication isn't necessary for mastery, so it's possible to have someone who uses a ton of jargon and speaks what sounds like a different language who still really knows what they're talking about - this is actually part of the reason philosophy gets such a bad rap once you get into more abstract and purely theoretical concepts.
      communicators are meant to bridge the gap here, where they understand enough of their field to relay and distill down concepts in order to communicate with laymen. i think if we did somehow require it for all specialists to be able to communicate their particular specializations in a way that laymen could understand 100%, then we would by necessity be reducing the amount of specialization that goes on period. i tend to agree that we need to have MORE communicators, and more academics in particular need to cultivate better communication skills, but it's basically impossible to expect us to remain as specialized in the sciences as many academics are while also requiring them to take their time to learn to communicate with the public and then devote time to actually do so

      @@deensama7718 first off hi nice to meet you,
      I see where you're coming from where communication is a difficult skill in its own right and forcing every scientist to focus on communication could take away from their work. I agree with that. The disconnection I'm having is that I don't think we're talking about the same types of people. I believe it is incredibly rare that in the twitchsphere we are seeing the very top echelons of philosophers and scientists discussing the peak of their complex research. A lot of times the things being discussed like in this video are within the realm of explanation to most laymen. I agree with Einsteins quote for the vast majority of these topics that if you can't explain it simply, you do not understand it.
      I am willing to concede that maybe with some people in their field are excellent at learning, but are terrible at teaching, I've gotten to see first hand in my area of expertise of masters who are making top 1% money who understand concepts beyond my understanding, but who are dogshit at teaching/explaining. I do however think those people may not understand completely what they are doing and are replicating successes that they stumbled upon.

      @deensama7718 2 роки тому

      @@jcpbd1776 mostly i think it comes down to the specifics of the subjects being discussed and what field they fall under. if we took the idea that the way to demonstrate mastery over difficult concepts is to explain them simply as totally true, then we would effectively also be denying the usefulness of jargon. this could also be a perspective issue however.
      to explain what i mean, jargon is normally used in the context of communicating complex concepts in shorthand, but that shorthand is typically only accessible to people who have expertise within that field. so from the perspective of a specialist within a field, using academic jargon might actually be the same thing as simply explaining concepts but the intended recipient is a fellow academic rather than the laymen. however, i think most people within these spaces (twitch, youtube, etc.) would agree with the statement that an overreliance on jargon means that the people using that jargon aren't capable of demonstrating their mastery because they aren't able to effectively communicate to laymen.
      i'm really just trying to meet people where they're at, so i'll take twitch streamers and viewers at their word that reliance on jargon isn't actually simplifying the concepts from their perspective. that's where my argument that not all masters necessarily HAVE to simplify concepts to laymen comes in, and that's exactly why we have folks like science communicators. it's the inherent cost of increasing specialization, which leads to innovations in many fields and arguably is why technology has exponentially expanded in recent years

    • @deensama7718
      @deensama7718 2 роки тому

      also just to be clear, i believe places like twitch and youtube should be of particular interest to communicators. rather than placing all pressure on researchers to come on and defend concepts that they almost definitionally are not totally positive is the capital T Truth (which is why they're researchers, and why the scientific method as far as experimentation is concerned starts with the generation of hypotheses, then testing, rather than working backwards from a firmly held conclusion to justify itself) we should be encouraging the creation of more communicators, and then encouraging the communicators who DO exist to inhabit these spaces and speak on the concepts.
      this isn't to say that researchers themselves have no business being here, simply that they're much more likely to be misinterpreted firstly, and that the more ideal situation would involve a researcher being interviewed by a communicator or maybe even having someone who has the skills of a communicator be part of the research team. in my eyes that would give us the best of both worlds, whereby we would be discussing new findings and reviewing old ones with the researchers themselves, using the communicators as a way to bridge the gap between laymen and more specialized and focused researchers who might not even be aware of the myriad ways people can misinterpret their findings until it's far too late

I also understand the process of researches and communicators having differnt tasks to effectively specialize their work.
      I'm just faced with a dilemma where we may differ in opinion. If I had 2 people in front of me who have achieved the hypothetical exact same level of research.
      Guy 1 gave me the stereotypical speech of "well its difficult to explain if you haven't gone over the 1948 study from Deen sama or read "Destiny is a girls name" so you wouldn't understand the jargin I'm gonna use.

      If afterward you were to ask me who I thought understood their research better there's no world I could imagine picking guy 1 over guy 2.

    My favorite example of this language issue is that "vegetable" as we use it today is a nonsense word. Vegetable just means plant matter in its technical sense (I.e. vegetable, animal or mineral), but then we kind of use it colloquially to refer to the parts of plant matter that are edible.
    The problem is that we then started adding categories for edible plant matter like fruits and nuts and legumes till what exactly a "vegetable" is has more to do with fitting in with certain recipes or flavor profiles than actually belonging to a classification relating to biology. That's why tomatoes are a fruit, but they're also absolutely a vegetable.

      Okay, and? It’s not a “nonsense word” though. It means any plant that fills a savoury role in cuisine. I think that is way more useful than any plant that can be eaten. Whereas fruit has two different definitions. A culinary one and biology one. In the culinary definition tomatoes (and things like eggplant) are vegetables, because we use them to make savour foods. The biology definition is a fruiting body. Honestly, in your day to day life, the culinary definition is going to be way more useful.
      The fact I can ask you to pass me the vegetables and you’ll know exactly what I am talking about means it’s not nonsense and that theirs rules behind it’s usage. If anything we should be more restrictive and take out anything that is effectively a starch or protein, but still a plant.

But i dunno, the example is a little contrived. No one is going to be confused and think you are an eel. Japanese is very contextual, but i feel like it is blown out of proportion as well. This kind of ambiguity happens in english and spanish all the time.
    The real ambiguity and difficulty honestly comes from social cues you need to pick up on.

      @@crazymonk27 maybe, i dunno what destiny's point really was. Just adding some context

      @@yojou3695 his main point was that some words or phrases have multiple meanings within different contexts. So the term "nazi" is not worth using when people mean multiple things depending on the person who says it and even the people hearing it can hear different things when the same person says it. So destiny chooses not to use the term and instead care about the positions people hold. Position like Fuentes wanting a country that is as close to an ethnostate as possible and wanting women to all be housewives regardless of what those women want because that would be good for the country according to nick. It's easier to say "you are a nazi and nazis are bad" but more effective in pulling their audience away by saying "you advocate for ideas that do not work and/or cause problems in "specific ways""

      But how would you interpret it if it was said by a cannibalistic, anthropomorphic eel in a restaurant?
      Checkmate, atheists.

    59:10 yep, your average person is willing to throw the word Nazi around without having any clue what those people actually believed

    Is she serious, like I didn't hear one thought through statement or questions she said, and on top of that, I dont think anything she said brought anything to the table, while standing on the fact that she did socially in school??😂
