By the way, the Maldives was not a British colony as such. It was a "protected state" in official British jargon. British law did not apply over the islands. At no time, were there British administrators in residence. The Maldives were ruled by kings until 1968, and occasionally by queens, whose government enacted laws that applied in and over the islands. There was a Royal (British) Air Force staging post on the southern-most island, named Addu-Gan and on a fenced off area called Maamendu, on the neighbouring Hitadu island from about 1957 to 1976. A British diplomat, Humphrey Arthington-Davy, was in residence in Male and Dunidu for about 3 years in the early 1960s. He wasn't quite diplomatic and so the Maldives authorities asked him to be removed. He was not replaced. Arthington-Davy was later posted as High Commissioner to the Kingdom of Tonga where he got on very well with the locals.
Maldivians speak good English because the government introduced English-medium education gradually from 1961. The first English medium teachers were Sri Lankan Burghers (Dutch-descent, mixed-race people) whose native language was English.

20:38 I noticed over the years that whenever Gabe says "hello" to a local he goes into lower octave mode. Sometimes I would think it was from a different speaker. I was going to mention it long ago, but thought he would be conscious of it and wouldn't do it anymore! It's kind of fun and I always look our for it. Anyway I thought I would mention it now, don't know if it would change in the future and he stops doing it (I hope not), but there are quite a few examples from videos past where his "hello" is deep and formal.

Hi Gabriel, You are right about the prices in the Caribbean and Hawaii prices are extensively more expensive the only thing is for people who don't want to travel far in the U.S. it makes sense to be closer and less of a commute. Southeast Asia does have many beautiful Islands like Bali and of course, in the nearby Pacific ocean, you do have many American territory Islands which include Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa to name a few of them.

Also I stayed at the Stingray Beach and really enjoyed myself there. Did you see the talking parrot? I have a connection for a yacht that travels around to different islands, if you are interested. Tip, don't ever order a "Breakfast" from any food place, Order a Disk-Mas Huni, You'll get a much more filling and much more traditional Breakfast.
The disk is a flatbread akin to a tortilla and Mas Huni is like a Fish jerky salad with Coconut flesh.
You rip bits off the disk and pick up Handfuls of the salad and eat.
You should try some next time you're over here

Gabe, some questions for you, please:
Do The Maldives get a lot of hurricanes?
What made you want to go there, apart from it being different from India?
Did you ever rent a moto or cyclo whilst in The Maldives? I reckon it would be hard to get around if one did not have transport.
Also, have you ever been to Singapore? That place is on my bucket list!
Are there any laws in The Maldives that you were worried about following, or not? Asking because in Singapore you can't chew gum and any drug usage, of any sort, results in an automatic death sentence.
Infinity pools are those without coping. The water just spills off of their sides and into a trough below the drop off, the edge.
Last question: Have you been to Tahiti? Ever want to go there?
I lied, sorry ha, ha: Gabriel if you have leftovers can you take such back to your hotel / inn, and refrigerate them?

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos

I haven't been to Tahiti yet but would love to see it.

      @vertica1speed 2 роки тому +2

Hello there, as a person from the Maldives i will answer some of your questions.
      1. No. We’ve never had any “hurricanes” as far as I remember. However it’s not uncommon to have pretty bad storms during the rainy season which just started and will last till like November. But these usually don’t last very long either.
      2. Depends on the island. I know for a fact that some places offer bikes and even scooters for rent.
      3. Yes. As Maldives being a muslim country any form of nudity in a local area is very frowned upon and could land you on some good trouble. (Probably wouldn’t get you a death sentence tho lol)
All drugs are illegal and will get you in a lot of trouble with the law enforcement here.
      4. Yes you absolutely can take the leftovers in 99% of the restaurants. At least here in the local islands
      Well thats all :)
Hope you come here sometime it’s pretty nice. If you do I recommend flying south, in Fuvahmulah there’s a really good spot to dive with tigers.

@@hajarasaad5643 June-July tend to be a lot of rain. Was the like that last year and same again this year. Specially if you’re gonna come for a short stay June maybe not a good idea.
I recommend August (or later). Peak tourist season is around November-February. So everything becomes way more expensive during this time.
And always good idea to plan your trip according to the weather forcast in this general area. (Check for storm formations around Srilanka, india and also in the Arabian Sea)

@@satriawiraguna366 I thought she said she was a Canadian citizen but `yes she does sound like she's from the Ph. And being a Canadian citizen is believable as there are many immigrants from different parts of the world who have become citizens of that country.

There's a 10% service charge added onto the bill. From what I read it's optional to tip on top of that.

I was really enjoying your videos of India and thought you should stay there longer because you highlight places that are unusual. So surprised you are in Maldives. Not that intresting to me.
