I ride a Suzuki gs500. It is the perfect bike for me! Granted, I would like to move up on to sportbikes, for a beginner bike, this bike is an absolute dream. Not too heavy, handles well. This video is stupid.

I'm with the haters on this one. This guy is a joke and has completely missed the point. I have had dozens of bikes over the past 50 years and the only one I really regret getting rid of is the GS500. I loved it. Plenty of power for every day use, handling just fine, frugal as you like on fuel, cheap insurance, easy to work on, easy to clean etc etc. I think it looks great as well and it fills a niche in the market. I love my DL 650 for long rides but looking for another GS500 for shorter fun stuff - it's just a bit small for me to spend all day in the saddle. I often feel the need to apologise for the clueless old gits of my generation (actually he's a lot younger than me but sorry! nonetheless) To all you GS500-lovers out there - rock on!

Rode a couple of GS's, now proud owner of an 02' model. The older ones had horrible stock mirrors indeed, but I've clocked 300-400 KM multiple times on it during weekends and it's a blast to ride, super comfortable (even at 1.90/6"3), engine is great and responsive, very linear power that doesn't feel intimidating to new riders, a very basic bike (air cooled, 2 valves per cylinder, minimal electronics).
Overall for a budget bike - it's a great buy and I would advise anyone who's starting out on a budget and wants a bike that can do it all (even some mild offroading) - get yourself a GS500!
Edit - 3 years of proud ownership, 50,000 KM in the saddle, 118K on the clock, original engine! , runs like a dream. Very good bang for the buck!

Bought one of these as a first bike in 02/15 and can confirm that while it might not be the worlds most exciting bit of kit it really doesn't deserve the bashing it got here.
Only time it's let me down is over winter when the (old and already tired) battery finally gave out after a few weeks of inactivity.

Because he's a snob and compares it to his high-end expensive bike. The GS is as balsic as you can go (well, maybe before an Enfield), it's a fantastic bike and will run forever (110,000 Km on mine, original engine), just service it in time and don't push it to it's limits.

I have owned a 1989 GS500 for 14years, I have other bikes ranging from a DT250 to a FJ1200 but use the GS500 the most. It's reliable, nippy enough, quite economical and cheap for spares. It's also a fun bike to ride.

I`m not an expert at all, but I read a lot of time that the GS500 is the perfect
beginner bike. Yet this bloke says that it`s "awful" in every respect. I also read many review on it
and most of them say that it`s a great bike. Any idea why an experienced motorist might say that it`s rubbish? I`m a bit confused. It sounds extremely biased. Perhaps they should have asked a younger chap to ride it. This bloke looks like he rides exclusively Honda Goldwing.

man this review grinds my gears... It's unconfortable? Lose some weight do some sports modify the suspention ( 1hour job ) and it should be fine. The engine is just build to last and do alot of miles.. Nothing else, so don't expect it would do more... I have a GS500E from 1991 and I love it, the only things I do agree with in this video is the brakes (wich I changed to steel break lines) and the exhaust wich i've changed aswell. To anybody thinking of buying a gs500e from the 90's, Go for it. it's build to last forever!

I have had 2 as well as many other bikes including suoerbikes. The GS500 is a fantastic machine, good fun to ride and fast enough to beat most cars on the road. I remember going round the inside of a GSXR750 going round and round a roundabout as the bloke in matching leathers tried to get his knee down. I went round twice on his inside to show him how it was done. LOL. GS500 was and is an excellent machine lots of MPG and easy to work on. I would have another in a shot. In fact I might get another.

Lets face it I dont think Alistair had any intention of getting one of these "cheaper" bikes. To say it drives awfully is weird. My one is an absolute dream to drive. All the power you could want, with no danger of wheel spinning or pulling a wheelie. The only thing I dont like is that if you drop the revs it will start to lug, so you have to change down gears - probably the same as similar bikes. Also my front brake caliper jams up while driving through the winter. The reach to the handlebars is hurting my back, however quite a common riding position. Today in Tescos a man asked me if I was driving an SV 650 ! So it cant be bad looking. This man drove an SV 650. I love the look of it. Its like a sculpture. It has lovely soft suspension - which most people here seem to complain about. You barely feel going over the worst bumps. Does anyone know what the reviewers mean by "disjointed", in regards to a motorbike ? Maybe Alistair should stick to his usual transport like his Plutonium powered flying saucer or his funky flying carpets :)

He obviously dislikes the GS500. I had an early one (J-reg) back in 2011 because I was commuting 35 miles to work and needed something at short notice to replace my tired CG125BR-J. The GS500 did the job well although not exciting but gave good reliability and good fuel economy. I rode it non-stop (apart form refueling) from Portsmouth to Liverpool (260miles) for a weekend break and then rode back again. I changed the oil before I went. The bike never missed a beat and when I checked the oil after returning home, it still was a gold colour and never used a drop. Not the most exciting bike but good for the job. A basic A to B as my dad would say.

I used one for a couple of weeks before doing my test on one many moons ago around the peaks, from what I remember it was ok the front never felt detached from the back at all and handled rather well around the twisty roads, yes its no pocket rocket but it held all the speed limits fine and more if needed .yes it had no fairing so anything over 80 and you would get bufferin as you would on any naked bike to this day. To me its a low maintenance commuter bike which can be rode all year around and not have to worry about it . And to give it a 2 on reliability is stupid did he not get to where he was going ?, all the test centers back in the day aint going to be having bikes that break down all the time are they.

I had a GS500 in late 2010 and it was an awful bike. It was reliable but by God it was so boring. I did a trip from Portsmouth to Liverpool, then rode back the following evening (a round trip of about 500miles) and it was uncomfortable as the riding position was slouched forward and motorway speeds a chore due to no wind protection and the lack of power to get you out of trouble above 70mph with confidence. The more I looked at it parked up, the uglier it looked. I agree with Alastair, it is an awful bike. My advice is spend a bit extra and get something much more decent. The GS500 is crap.
