Damn, man; you make it seem so easy.... Love it. I wish I could see it the same way when I am right on the edge of the jumps. When I think about the jumps I will try to hit, I can perfectly see it and know what to do. When I am on the trail and in front of the jump, nothing seems the same... lol
Anonymus Seth is different in what he teaches and when I wrote this comment Seth was mainly teaching street and BMX skills and just starting to get involved in trail riding. But Seth`s channel is one of my favorites.
yes is is one of the best, I like Phil too. Phil seems to be more detailed in explaining and videos. Neil just has that 5th grade teacher tone of voice and not intimidating. He looks like hes 145lbs and 5'5 so makes all his jumps flawless!
Worrying about how things may go wrong when jumping is the mistake itself. Like anything else, it takes learning the fundamentals and repeated practice. Everyone falls (think Bryceland at 2014 Worlds) and its going to hurt. At such moments remember these 3 things: wounds heal, chicks dig scars and GLORY LASTS FOREVER. Then get back up and go try it again.
I know I’m 4 years late but I just found this video because I just broke my femur and my wrist and i was as confident as possible but that last second gear got me and doctor doesnt think I can ride again :(
Great Teaching Neil. You've improved my technique huge since finding GMBN and I have been mountain biking for 25 years. Even done a bit of racing. My skills had plateaued, and I had quite a few bad habits that I had picked up over the years. Thanks for helping me improve the little things. It has made my riding even more fun. It's like I am a kid again.

Yes, thanks Neil for mentioning the dead sailor. I felt air on the tabletop jump, but somehow I did not lift straight , making me land on my back tire and wiping out with my weight on the right side, giving me a faceplant Wipeout and a broken pinky
Got the best jumping advice yesterday; I was at the pump track, and asked a good guy about standing up for the jump, etc. He said “just go jump it.” I did, and it incredible. When I had just jump in my brain and body, it all seemed to be so easy. Of course, it wasn’t huge air, but it was AIR!
About a month ago I crashed hard on a gap jump and injured my left shoulder, Since then I've been conservative on all types of jumps lol, and it feels like my skills have taken a step back when l have come so far, now I think know what I'm doing wrong hopefully I can regain my confidence after watching this video thanks GMBN!
First at all...I'm a Rookie in jumping and afraid of it. Why? Every time I "jump", my shoes get disconnected from my flat pedals. I do know, that I am doing something wrong, so my question is: Would clipless avoid this?
Clips would fix the problem but it’s probably better to learn the proper technique in case you’d ever want to learn tricks or if you need to bail. I’ve that pulling on the bars and/or not pumping hard enough will disconnect your feet from the pedals. This is cause when you pump off the take off properly the bike flies up towards you and your feet so the wrong timing or not doing it strong enough will most certainly bring the bike downwards away from you. Anyways that’s just what I’ve learned, I hope it helps after a year 😂.
+Ryan Nelson I guess you missed The Dirt Shed Show the Friday before this episode aired. Martin urged the viewers to subscribe and put GMBN over 200k subscribers. Hence the congratulatory comment. Since you asked. BTW, what is the value in your comment?
Nice tips Neal. Confidence is the biggest thing in my opinion. If you think you can clear the jump you'll porobly sail right over it but if your not sure that's when your gonna come up short, nose case and get dumped on your face (speaking from experience lol)
+karL ish Yeah every-time I have not thought about the jump I have sailed right over it and landed perfectly. When you overthink it shit goes south, and fast. I hit a jump at the bottom of a flow trail one time and was trying to find the perfect line, and tail-whipped the bike, instead of just going for it like normal, ended up kissing the dirt. Few moths later one of the girls on the team did the same thing, except if she had stayed clipped in and kept her bars straight I think she would have ridden it out. Would have been badass if she did
I've watched someone back out at the last second and slam their brakes... and I watched someone say "I'm not gonna do it." Then waited till the last second, sped up, and hit it not going fast enough. Neither scenario ended well...
I find a very common mistake (I even do it myself sometimes) is focusing too much on the landing, rather than looking ahead at what's to come. Looking just at the landing often leads to hard landings
I got a Huffy ravine mountain bike and im trying to learn how to do good on trails so i can master MTB. Very hard though cause i cant really wheelie for shit and i cant bunny hop either. But thanks to these guys im learning slowly.. you guys are amazing keep up the great work
Maan I'm very experienced with huge jumps on a bmx but switching over to my downhill bike i'm always scared it's going to nose dive. Bought the bike and sent it downhill and realized I need to adjust the back suspension quickly.
I nose dive because I’m not used to my enduro bike and how high the seat is even tho its all the way down. Im really tall so the dropper is still pretty high at its lowest. Im used to jumping on my dirt jump bike witch has the seat really far down.
In Willingen I rode the Freeride line and overjumped so far, that when I landed, I directly crashed into the next jump. I was on my Hardtail and had almost no experience but I was so pissed off, that I cased it all.
it nice be great to have some jumps nearby to practice on, except the closest ones were destroyed by the city for being "unsanctioned" and the only sanctioned dirt jumps within an hour are in disrepair and have been abandoned by the city.
I watched this then went for a ride. Ended up doing a jump that had me fall from about 4 meters onto my ribs. 6 weeks later, it still hurts to breathe deeply. No idea where I went wrong. Now I just do really soft jumps and I don't lean back (like you said in this video). I just keep my weight right between the 2 wheels, and bend my arms just enough to carry the bike under me while I'm in the air. I don't get much height but I my bike stays straight.
I recon I hit the ground hard today because I found my self making the first mistake you mentioned. I felt good on ally he other jumps I did too. Toile me by suprise. Consistency seems to be the hardest thing.
200,000 subscribers. Congrats guys! I'm looking to style my jumps a little bit, but for now i've been only trying to turn the bars a little like you showd in your How to Style your Jumps video. I always get this horrible feeling that I won't be able to turn the bars back straight in time. I'm guessing it's a mix of lack of confidence and dead sailor?
I have a Merida Big Seven 20D. It is hardtail, so i'm wondering, can i do jumps with it? Btw very helpful video. Thank you very much. Just earned a new sub
Just working hard on my jumping skills. Firstly I cleared them with pure speed, when the bike comes to me I consumed all the upward force and swallowed them. Next episode, I’m trying to stand up straight - but still I’m stuck in the dead sailor phase, I’m clearing my tables but not like I should… I can do bunny hops with ease, but somehow not on the transition of a jump 😖
i have a problem with really big jumps...like the small ones where you can just/bunny hope them are no problem for me...but these motocross shaped long and almost not pushing kickers...they always get me into nosedives...
Hi GMB, I know one of these parks, up near Mijas, but where is the second run with bigger jumps, somewhere round Malaga right, but where exactly? I've never come across it. Cheers
It’s probably a little late to answer lol but it’s best to learn with flats because a lot of people will learn with clips and when they try flats (for example when they want to learn tricks) the pedals fall down beneath their feet because they’ve never learned the technique to keep feet on the pedals.
I ride mtb and have been jumping a little bit larger jumps lately but.... when i hit a jump that will have a pretty solid landing i bounce back up off my peddles.. its a plus size 27.5 .. ive ride novice bmx and mtb for ever so not new to getting some air but never bounce like this before.. any idea why?
hi guys, Any tips for stopping me pushing my rear wheel down first when landing a jump, I always seem do it!?!? when I jump or should I say trying to jump!#askthedon
+David Wright great question, it takes time to build up the confidence in which you can push the front wheel into the landing of the jump before the rear. Once you have experience you'll be dropping the front in.

Yeah I nose dived last week. Scariest crash i have ever been in. I was going into a tabletop way to fast and landed nose first than went over the handle bar.

I need a "how to be rad without a dropper"video because I'm trying to use proper form and I have to change it a bit on a carbon xc hardtail with fixed post
How do you avoid getting a flat when jumping? Do you need to have medium tire pressure or full tire pressure? I'm learning how to jump a long/high step made out of concrete on a flat surface. I can clear off the front tire but the back tire not as well. I recently learned to clear off both of them but I missed timed it and popped the back tire from an aggressive hit on the back tire. Any tips? this is the second time my tire pops...
Nice video. You say about using bunny hop technique to jump. Looking at the bunny hop technique you say about using the L shape to get your weight down and back in order to lift the front wheel up. It doesnt look like you throw your weight to the back in the L shape when going over jumps though, looks like your just compressing downwards like an english bunny hop. Am I missing something?
+Alex MH No, you're not. These guys say a lot of stuff but watching the videos they don't practice what they preach--they frequently land way too nose heavy and case most of the jumps.
+Alex MH I think he does a very very reduced version of what a bunny hop would be. You can see it clearer on his video "How to Jump Higher" The intention here is not to raise the front wheel, just to perform the weight transfer
how to take high bank corners, we have got a really sharp one in our track like a 180 degree turn with a really high and steep bank. most of the time i am way to high at the end of the corner en an have to hot the breaks really hard like drifting. got any tips?
What happened if u just "let it go"?? like just let the bike jump and hope for the best kinda thing? I remember when u jump make sure u push ur arm forward before u hit the ground to ur rear wheel dont hit first??
I know this is more something people do in moto, but it does work on the mountain bike if you hit the rear brake in the air it will bring the front end down in a hurry in case of an emergency
Howzit Guys. Awesome tutorial. It feels like I am doing most of this correctly, but for some reason I tend to go skew on jumps. Either my rear wheel pulls out towards one side, or my weight goes towards a side. It tends to be my right side (I ride left foot forward). Even my manuals and bunnyhops tend to do this. videogaminbiker889 I'm wondering if taping empty plastic bottles to the frame, then building a jump into a lake would work? bark is still a little stabby for me ;)

is there any way of practicing the technique, without the ground being quite so hard when you inevitably get it wrong?? do bikes float??
+toasty bear try barkmulch quite cheaper than a foam pit ;)
videogaminbiker889 I'm wondering if taping empty plastic bottles to the frame, then building a jump into a lake would work? bark is still a little stabby for me ;)
my friend just jumped his bike and did a very awful nose dive hit his face flat on the ground and bike slamming into him
I felt bad for him luckily no broken spine
