I had a problem while doing this upgrade and I had to do an intensive research to fix it, so I post this comment in hope that it helps others. First of all, connect the SSD with a SATA power Y splitter (you can find on YT how to do it). It works, and you won't have to install any software to control fans speeds. Everything will be fine. However, my problem was that after I reassembled my 21,5" mid 2011 iMac, CPU and ODD fans went crazy. I ran Apple Hardware Test, and it showed an issue with the LCD temperature sensor - 4ns/1/C0000008: TL0p--124 - To solve it you have to take off the LCD, disconnect all the connectors, tear off tapes on the upper-left side on the back of the LCD and disconnect LCD thermal sensor cable (it's the one with 6 wires in the middle of LCD) connector. Blow some canned air over it and reconnect. Put your iMac together, reset NVRAM and everything should work just fine, assuming that all your cables are intact. AHT will show no troubles.
I've got the MacFancontrol standard on my computers, so also the SoundBooster for better and louder sound. MacFancontrol purely for gaming so I can keep the temperature on wacht 🤓

I was a bit anxious about doing this upgrade myself, but your video was extremely helpful, and my trusty old iMac has a new lease of life. i can hardly believe the difference in performance.
Great vid, but if you’re worried about taking the screen off, get someone to hold the screen, lift it out slightly and hold it over to the left, there is plenty of room to get your hands inside and swap over the hd to ssd and that’s it, takes about 2 minutes! 😊👍
Thank you very much for this. worked great. I messed around with the HDD bracket and managed to secure the SSD to it. really grateful for the simplicity of it.
Great video. I took a look at several videos before doing the upgrade and this was the only one which showed how much easier it is to reassemble when the Mac is laid down (you can put it together while it is standing up but the screen will go half a millimeter deeper than it should be so the screw holes will not align perfectly). Some other videos show also a specific SSD mounting bracket. I used a generic pair of U-shaped pieces of metal that they sometimes give away with SSDs - that did the job as well, but only after several tries (bottom of the SSD is facing you, which is not what you are used to with PCs). Note that the bracket definitely helps you putting everything in the right direction. Also you may want to copy your old files from the hdd - it is easier to do so BEFORE doing the upgrade, assuming the Mac works. I did it afterwards using my PC and a free program called HDD Guru.
Wow, they still used 3.5 hard drives in 2011 iMacs. I thought they got rid of those around 2009.. Anyway, recently upgraded my 2008 iMac and it now works perfectly fast (enough for basic tasks)
2.5 inch drives were very expensive and small in capacity back in those days and knowing Apple they are tight ass's making sure they get every cent in maximum profits, so basically the cheapest HHD's
Technically Apple started using Fusion Drives which are small SSDs attached to HDDs as part of the same package (looks identical to a HDD usually). macOS usually sits on the SSD, improving boot times and system performance in general, but if you Boot Camp then Windows goes on the HDD part and it's noticeably slower. To people saying Apple use the crappiest components; no they don't, overall. Other than some GPU issues that they couldn't have known about (I think it was the nVidia 9300 series stuff, got used in a bunch of iMacs and MacBook Pros) their laptops and desktops tend to last over a decade if not mistreated. I had some 2007 iMac 20" models that after a RAM upgrade, HDD to SSD swap and a GPU swap (that took a lot of disassembly) were perfectly at home running Catalina and as long as not too much was asked of them, made great little machines for the people I sold them to.

I just replaced my hard drive on my iMac 2011 21.5 with a brand spanking new SSD and did a Command+Option+R and internet recovery worked perfectly. Just like you I had tried booting from a bootable USB and it wouldn’t work. Would go through the Internet Recovery (holding Command+R) and would get as far as choosing to install the Lion OS that originally came with my machine and would always say that resource was not available (because Lion is no longer available on App Store.) Command+Option+R bypassed all of that and immediately downloaded and installed High Sierra on my bare drive. Hope this helps!

Yes you can, it usually involves disabling SIP and installing reFind. You can control the fans manually by either installing macfanctld or echoing a fan speed to /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/fan3_min (and related). You can also control boot order with efibootmgr so it doesn't go straight to grub.

Thanks my friend, that was straight forward to the point. others talk to much and confuse people by doing that. Yours was right to the point, thank you. One question I had is should I try to clean any dust or anything else once the screens out? I bought a Samsung like yours 1TB just need to get a few mins to install. I'm going to use your tutot=rial to do that.
Can you share the samsung hard drive part number? Neighbor needs to know. thank you
Just look up Samsung internal sata SSD
The hard drive that comes originally what type of hard drive is it I’ve been looking for one everywhere as I have a 2009 iMac but I can’t seem to find one
Good video! Clear and concise.
Hello buddy!! sorry.. Doesn't any adapter need to connect the new SSD inside the imac? Or is the same connector used by the HD Disc perfectly compatible? Thanks a lot
It's just a standard SATA power and data connection, so the new one will plug right in. No adapter needed at all.
Julian Taffa thanks a lot, I ordered already the new ssd!!
@@Carlos5thPro How much did you pay for the ssd and where? Im seeing them for $130 and above for the 1tb
Thanx for the video great insert. Can anyone assists me… I install my ssd on my iMac mid 2011 and when I switch the computer on it gives me an envelope with a question mark in the middle … how can I get the operating system on the ssd?
Question, when replacing the old hard drive, there was a third cable which i think is the PATA; will this work with the new SSD with that cable disconnected?
@InspiringBee707 I think it worked without that extra cable, though not completely sure as I did it some time ago
Any links where to buy this exact size SSD drive ?
Thanks. Great video. I can now upgrade my old Mac
How do I get all my files and info from the old HD drive to the new SSD? Please help thank you
Make a backup onto a drive or something
How did you get around the HDD thermal sensor issue?
Get a thermal sensor cable
Do you need the temperature cable on this, to avoid the fan to keep spinning?
do you need to know the model number to get the correct hard drive?
No.
But you do need to know where to put it if you aren’t using a 2011 imac
ok thank you, my mac is 2011 but just 27.5 inch
Tech It Out sorry me again, if i upgrade it to an ssd, before i put the ssd in, do i need to install macos? or can i just install macos on the ssd
Tech It Out also thank you for responding to my other message so fast
Straight to the point THANK YOU
inst there a thurmo sensor ya should be changing out when you do that?
Thanks for the information. Yeesh, Apple doesn't make things easy at all, do they? I presume it's similarly difficult to install extra RAM, huh? Also, is there a trick to installing an OS on one of these? I keep getting asked to log into my Apple account, only for the system to tell me my OS "is not currently available." Annoying!
Great video!! Told me everything I need to know. Thanks 😊
Where can I order that SSD from please?
I did exactly how you showed in the video but my problem us i'm unable to either do an Internet Recovery or install MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6 via USB. I just opened a brand new SSD from box and just replaced without formatting, is this because of this? please guide.
Thanks for sharing. Helped me!!!!
what size screwdriver do you need to unscrew the iMac ?
Hi, thanks for a nice video, I bought A1311 from a seller who said he removed the HDD, but the screen does not turn on, I have heard chime though, I have not tried installing SSD yet as waiting for one to arrive, but i read that i should be able to see the screen on with the folder. Do you know what might be wrong?
yes he might have not reconnected all the cables correctly to the lcd ,best check to see if thats the case
Do you know if this works the same for the 27” Late 2012 iMac?
Is it difficult to get new ldvs cable and connector as I just damaged it…
What SSD model was that ? Link ?
So uh, yeah. I'm in the middle of this process, got the hard drive in there, but I'm a little worried that I may have damaged one of the cables while removing the screen. How do I know for sure? Am I totally hosed if that's happened? It's the one with the bronze/brass connector... I think it pulled out on its own while I was lifting the screen. O_O;
Oh I have done the same now I have to buy new ldvs cable…
Many thanks for your guidance !!
Does the disk have to be formated as exFat or i can leave it NTFS?
You don't need to mirror the old hard drive?
I have a late 2011 Mac. Would this remedy my issue of not being able to update my O.S. to the most current version?
No
Dude you need to show how to remove those two cables off each side you skipped that part and that’s the whole reason I came to this video now I have to go find another one…
What if the mac is still overheating after installing the macs fan control app?
Perfect instruction. Thank you so much and congratulations
which hard drive are you using in this video?
Can you install Linux on this Mac and does it do the loud fan business with Linux installed?
Yes you can install it. Idk about the fans I’ve never done it
Yes you can, it usually involves disabling SIP and installing reFind. You can control the fans manually by either installing macfanctld or echoing a fan speed to /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/fan3_min (and related). You can also control boot order with efibootmgr so it doesn't go straight to grub.
Great. Will the machine work with only one fan working? Tnks. G
Heat is not dangerous to HD!? I'm afraid... tks
can someone give a recommendation for a good hard drive ssd upgrade that would work with my 2011 iMac? what is the guy using in the video? would love to get about 2TB at least... thanks in advance
I would recommend the Samsung EVO SSDs. I put a 500GB in my 2011 iMac about 6 years ago. They have definitely come down in price.
@@spsanders69 can I ask you something? From what I gather, I just have to order the ssd. I don't have to order any extra connection cables, right? From what I understand, you just connect the ssd to the existing previous sata cables. So it is just buy only the ssd and plug it in, in the old cables and that should be it. Correct?
@@MinimaLinsitCt Yes that is correct. It has been awhile since I did it. Since the drive is 2.5" vs 3.5", I think you may want to get a mounting kit to secure the drive inside the iMAC. They are relatively cheap though, or use double sided tape like he did in the video. The SATA cable will just plug in without issue though.
Made a world of a difference. I am still using my 2011 iMAC right now.
Get a Cock Drive
I was able to do the SSD upgrade on my 2011 iMac. Just having problems wit the Internet Recovery mode.
Hey where did you find the hard drive? I’m in Orlando Florida
can we add another temperature sensor or using dvd drive sensor for ssd to get ride of app?
Yes there is an in line temperature sensor from owc. You have to use that, the software fix is temporary
2 questions, 1 i am here because i am getting the white screen with a flashing ? folder every time i turn on the imac. it happened yesterday i had a brief power outtage and when i went to turn back on it was like that. so i have read it could be that hdd is fried, or the cable is fried. so how would i go about changing the cable itself? if thats what i need. and ? 2 is what are the benefits to switching the hdd to sdd while i got it open?
Hi
Can I install ssd as bootable drive and make the hdd to 2nd Drive.
Is there cable to connect a 2nd Drive?
Thanks for the nice Video
For the older iMACs that can be done by removing the DVD Drive and putting the second hard drive. There are only those two SATA ports in the system.
Great video - very helpful! Would I need a OWC In-Line Digital Thermal Sensor HDD Upgrade Cable? If no, why is it recommended?
OWC is ripping off customers with that "Sensor" use a simple sata Y Splitter and the issue of full speed fan is gone
@@bennaambo2716 Following up on this, the iMac's fans go on high speed if they don't recognize a new replacement product. All OWC's "sensor" is doing is telling the fans to not go full throttle. Hook one end of the Y splitter on the sata cable connecting the original hard drive. Leave the other y splitter unconnected. Use some electrical tape to prevent the cable from possible damage of the LCD.
@@christinacao3415 So no need to cut the wire (1 and 4) as suggested by another video I watched?
Is this the y splitter in question: www.microcenter.com/product/364683/qvs-15-pin-male-to-2x-15-pin-female-dual-sata-internal-y-power-cable-6-in
@@davidpaisley9949 No there is no need to cut wires 1 and 4 and tape them together if you directly get a sata y splitter. This past week, I replaced my HDD with an SDD and used this exact sata y splitter: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014YKTDKO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . Looking at the cable you linked, I believe it will work, but I choose to buy on Amazon so I could confirm further. One end will connect to the drive and the other I used electrical tape to tape the other pin shut. Then I placed them under the ssd so the LCD could close.
@@christinacao3415 Thanks for getting back to me. That is what a Thought. Another video, a rant, was very confusing as to what to do.
HOW DO YOU ADDRESSED THE FAN SPEED SENSOR SITUATION?
Juan E. Tavarez I just pinned a comment saying how to fix it. Lots of people asked this question
Plugging in the golden head cable (LCD) to iMac is really difficult. I think I screwed it up! It doesn’t fit :/
Oh no.! Dm me on Instagram and send me a pic of what’s going on and I’ll try to help
I just took the glass off my 2011 27inch (bought new from Apple) and it has handwriting inside in permanent marker
Okay, gonna take the leap and do this. Just need to know, I have a Seagate backup drive always attached. All I need to do is disconnect it then when done installing the SSD reconnect the Seagate and have it reinstall everything? that simple??
yh me too i can do this easy but im trying to figure out how to tranfer all data can i just use time machine plug in the ssd using usb adapter back up using time machine then put in the ssd and boot from ssd would it just restore from backup?
You don't need that much double sided tape, it'll be all but impossible to remove in the future (if you ever do!). I would just buy a 2.5 -3.5" bracket, it's only $5 for one.
my old hard drive ha scrashed , and i cant get it to repair mode. can i just switch the harddrive as you did , do i need somthing else to install the software or the imac will automaticly set up the new hard drive with the software ?
If you can’t get into internet recovery (the command for that is shift+command+r) then you can make a macOS bootable usb drive
looks great thanks!
What size torque screw driver?
