Hey, I did the same upgrade on my machine which is running Sonoma. Since upgrading the CPU once the CPU goes under a somewhat heavy load the fans will turn on full speed and the CPU temp starts reporting as 131C. I downloaded a piece of software that shows the individual temps and there it shows that many of the sensors are reporting -125 or -128 C. I've checked everything I can think of and reseated the CPU. They temps report as expected until put under a heavy load and will jump nearly 100 degrees C.

Desperate Question: I'd like to upgrade my 2011, 21.5" Imac. I bought it for $20, it works and I was thinking if I upgraded the RAM from 2 gb-10 gb, the CPU, maybe the graphics card and changed the HDD to an SSD, I could play modern games on my Imac with no problem. It wouldn't be a perfect 5 star performance, but it'd work well. Right? Or not? Is it too old? If so, couldn't I upgrade these things and make it modern?
It may not play well. When I upgraded the graphics card I later had power supply issues that caused issues with sleep and sometimes it wouldn’t power on. So I wound up putting the stock graphics back in. If you want to game you will likely need windows 10, which boot camp doesn’t natively support on this model of the Mac, so you would have to have windows 10 already pre-installed on an SSD/HDD and then put that in the imac
@@techitout4710 thank you so much for responding! So probably keep the default graphics card and have Windows in the ssd already. So do you think I could play modern AAA games if I just upgraded the ram and maybe upgraded a cpu that is compatible with this imac model?
@@johnbiondi2993 Probably not without upgrading the GPU. CPU and RAM are not going to have much of an effect on video game playability on these iMacs. See this thread forums.macrumors.com/threads/2011-imac-graphics-card-upgrade.1596614/ on GPUs that are compatible and how to get them installed and working. Not exactly a swap for the faint at heart, but it's doable. Also, while Windows 10 is not supported natively in Boot Camp, there are certainly ways to install it without "installing it to the SSD already," and I'm not even sure that's a surefire way to get it to work properly while also having the ability to use macOS alongside it. I have installed Windows 10 and gotten it 100% working in Macs as old as a 2006 13" MacBook by installing using a live USB with the Windows 10 installation on it. Follow this guide apple.stackexchange.com/questions/308743/how-to-install-windows-10-into-a-2011-imac-without-using-the-boot-camp-assistant/308812#308812
@@techitout4710 actually, it is possible to install windows 10 on a 2011 iMac, and it runs well, the only downside is you can only go to windows 10 build 1909 without an eGPU. Or you can use boot camp to install Windows with a CD, which fixes the sound also, without a DSDT override. There is also a program out there called Rufus which can also be used to make a Windows 10 installer, up to 1909 for this model Mac, and it does not require any modifications to Boot Camp Assistant, but it does have the issue where the internal speakers aren’t detected. If you put a processor that is not rated 's'' you will have heat and high power consumption problems. It do-sent matter if your i 5 was not rated ''s'' as your putting a higher power GPU in the old machine.
Upgrading a GPU can be very problematic, as many are differently sized, and you’d have to make manual modifications to the mother board and/or the housing of the GPU.

Hello, and to know if it is possible to change the processor of my iMac model machine iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5 inches, 2017) It currently has a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5 quad-core processor. Do you know how much I can upload it? Well, according to Apple, these legends indicate that I copied and pasted you. (Configurable to Intel Core i7 with 4 cores and 3.6 GHz (Turbo Boost up to 4.2 GHz) And if the replacement part is correct, how do I order it online or how would I look for the replacement part???? since it gives me many results and it is confusing for me to find the part to replace. Well, the processor is where I have the most doubts On the other hand, memory indicates this... Memory 3.0GHz 8 GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 memory Configurable to 16 GB 3.4GHz 8 GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 memory Configurable to 16 GB or 32 GB But obviously I haven't opened it, I don't know if it works at 3.0 GHz or 3.4 GHz, as I understand it and if it uses 3.4 GHz it is possible to maximize it up to 32GB. Is my thinking correct? And finally, on the hard drive, it has a 1TB HDD but it indicates that it can be replaced as follows... Storage 3.0GHz 1 TB hard drive (5400 rpm) Configurable to 1TB Fusion Drive or 256GB or 512GB SSD 3.4GHz 1TB Fusion Drive Configurable to 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB SSD But my doubt is!!! If I can install an SSD with a larger capacity than the one proposed on the page, it indicates up to 1TB. But it can be increased from 2TB to 4TB????? Or would you definitely not recognize it? I hope for your help with these three ways to maximize the performance of this old machine.

No, that won't work. The chassis / housing is different as well as arrangements for screws and hardware. Cables won't reach or fit where they need to. For the price of the board you can probably find a nice working 2012 iMac on ebay.
Dude nice channel, since you are obviously more knowledgeable than the rest of us more detail and the components you’re putting in would be great. Which I7 What’s the fastest that is compatible with the mid 2011 iMac. I have two, One is just for Internet surfing. The other I have set up with a dual monitor, and final cut pro. It struggles, due to its age, but I don’t want to spend $3500 on a new one, and if I could make it 50% or 100% faster, for a few hundred bucks I would do it. And I just spent 40 minutes searching the Internet and I couldn’t find which I7 is the fastest possible this machine can take. What about the graphics CPU? Is that upgradable. Thanks keep up the good work, and you may want to get a second camera so you don’t get the shots of your back.
Thanks. The best CPU the mid-2011, 21.5” iMac can take is the i7 2600S specifically. Don’t try the 2600 or 2600X they won’t work. The iMac can take up to a Nvidia 770M to my knowledge.
By modifying the info.plush file in Boot Camp Assistant, it is possible to make a bootable USB installer of windows, but you can only install Windows 10 build 1803 at latest on the USB, you can update it to Windows 10 Build 1909 afterwards, the only downside is the internal speakers will not be detected and a DSDT override will be needed.
So it is actually possible to install on this Mac, and I believe these methods work for all unsupported Macs that were made in 2008 and after
My motherboard for some reason doesn't want to go back in. First time taking apart these iMacs and damn they are a pain in the ass. it literally acts as though it does not fit, I am baffled because theres not cable or anything hindering it. Wtf
Would’ve been great hairy Paul with the computer up to show us that everything worked out
So you obviously broke it and couldn't get it going.
Omg it worked!!! Thank you bro 😊
if you dont show just how the 4 cables dont come out from the back of the LCD its pointless
Could you share any important information before I zap myself on that power supply??
Just unplug the PC and press + hold the power button for a few seconds. Will discharge any capacitors that still hold a charge
😂
What's the latest cpu it will take? I have one that I have never upgraded before it has an i5 intell unrecalled which Gen. Thanx
Hi after installing the new SSD Drive? Do i need to reload the software? What else is needed? Thanks.
Yes you need to reload macOS
thanks for sharing! does the power supply enough if we plug in a i7 into it? alongside with K2100 GPU?
It is a pity that you did not bechmark it before and after to see how much better it became.
mid 2011 iMac12,1 and originally with 2.5 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5. after upgrade i7 2600, suffering from loud fan. I tried with macs fan controller. but during booting still suffer from the loud fan noise. I put the original CPU back. is there anyone who is suffering from fan noise after the CPU upgrade?
me too, I haven't found any solutions yet
I could resolve the issue with Macs fan control app. Only after you finish all installation, the app works. so, the booting speed is an issue. after booting the app works and can be quiet. @@antonia7991
@ltachles6695 It would be the processor the intel 2600s is a low power less heat is produced by it the ''S'' is the symbol for low power they are used in small form factor PC as well i upgraded my PC i wouldn't do this with a mac. If you put a processor that is not rated 's'' you will have heat and high power consumption problems.
It do-sent matter if your i 5 was not rated ''s'' as your putting a higher power GPU in the old machine.
What CPU did you use? The i7 has a few different models
Any link to where to get the processor , ive found 2 , both say i7- 2600s but one is a sandy bridge and the other costa rica ?
Too much screws.....gosh... why not buy new one? or give up upgrade of system?
I'd love to see also a gpu upgrade.
What kind of gpu upgrades are possible?
Upgrading a GPU can be very problematic, as many are differently sized, and you’d have to make manual modifications to the mother board and/or the housing of the GPU.
After I replaced the CPU, there was suddenly an audio issue on my imac. It makes the startup sound, but then the audio output is not working at all (the sound icon is grayed out on the top toolbar). Has anyone else had this issue? Can't figure out how to fix it.
Well, the processor is where I have the most doubts
On the other hand, memory indicates this...
Memory
3.0GHz
8 GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 memory
Configurable to 16 GB
3.4GHz
8 GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 memory
Configurable to 16 GB or 32 GB
But obviously I haven't opened it, I don't know if it works at 3.0 GHz or 3.4 GHz, as I understand it and if it uses 3.4 GHz it is possible to maximize it up to 32GB. Is my thinking correct?
And finally, on the hard drive, it has a 1TB HDD but it indicates that it can be replaced as follows...
Storage
3.0GHz
1 TB hard drive (5400 rpm)
Configurable to 1TB Fusion Drive or 256GB or 512GB SSD
3.4GHz
1TB Fusion Drive
Configurable to 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB SSD
But my doubt is!!! If I can install an SSD with a larger capacity than the one proposed on the page, it indicates up to 1TB. But it can be increased from 2TB to 4TB?????
Or would you definitely not recognize it?
I hope for your help with these three ways to maximize the performance of this old machine.
Hi friend, I have a question and I would be very grateful if you can answer me. I have an Imac from 2011 Education version Intelcore I3, do you think I could put an i7? And in case you can, could you tell me which model should I buy? Thanks a lot!!
I have a little budget and is it worth to get this imac mid 2011 right now?
roslee sulong yeah just got one ma self
definitely worth it I bought one for cheap from Walmart and not only does it work well out of the box, but it is the last Mac you can actually upgrade. Improve it at your own pace and you will have a Mac better than some newly released computers in no time
Please post in the comment CPU details so we can do same thank you
woaw ! great job !
hi, can we replace an old 2009 iMac's logic board with the newest version logic board (2011 / 2013)? is that replaceable and fit to space & screws?
No, that won't work. The chassis / housing is different as well as arrangements for screws and hardware. Cables won't reach or fit where they need to. For the price of the board you can probably find a nice working 2012 iMac on ebay.
A SIX PIN screw driver. Thank you so much!!!!!
Haha no prob and thank you!
What type processor i Can use? What socket or model?
Nice video :D
You didn't even clean the LCD panel with a microfiber cloth before replacing the glass front.
Hi, do you know by any chance how much can I upgrade my old Apple iMac "Core i5" 2.8 27" (Mid-2010)
Hey what’s going on? What cpu did you guess use for this upgrade?
Excellent !
Merci
Cool vid! 👍
Sorry can I ask a lint to buy the same cpu? Thanks
There is no official limit on what Graphics it can take but that’s the highest that I know of that has been tested. I will be getting one of those graphics cards soon and will do a tutorial on the upgrade. Also I know about the camera issues LOL, I’ll figure out something better next time.
@@techitout4710 Hi, how many Ghz in the processor? Is this the correct one? nemixram.com/intel-core-i7-2600s-sr00e-3-8ghz-processor/
@@nickvavroyes that will work, although I recommend a i7-3770s, I noticed a significant increase in performance all around from the 2600s. It also works with a GeForce GTX 770M. Best of luck!
i heve the same imac , i posible to upgrade to i7?
Where’d u get ur screwdrivers?
hey like i did this and the cpu is now locked at base speed how do i unlock it to full speed ?
Wonderful video madam
I remember the original top 27" iMac mid2011 had an i7 3.4 Processor. Do you or any follower know the exact CPU model? Is that available to buy? Thanks in advance.
@Unknown User So, i7 2600 is the most crucial information. (Except for the GHz, which was 3.4 regarding Apple specs)
2024. I can now install the newest Mac OS somona on my 2011 iMac
would it be worth it to install an i9 processor witn 16g ram to the mid 2011 mac?
if its cheaper than buying a new imac or a windows i would do it
Hi from Argentina! I Have a mid 2011 iMac, and it has a i5 processor. Wich is the best processor that you can recomend for my iMac? I will be upgrading the GPU at the same time the CPU all at once to save time... PLease recomend me the best CPU for my iMac. Thanks.
Core i7 2600s
Changing the graphics could cause other issues depending on which card you get
ok, I have a 2010 iMac. I’m wanting to swap out the cpu with a i7. It has a i3 rn. Would that be possible?
You have vids for it, you can!
Yes with i7 870
After completing my cabling work. My IMAC beeps three times.. and showing error of RAM.. I tried replacing the RAM But it doesn't work.. Kindly help anyone.
Mukesh Verma you probably have bad slot , try booting with one and see if it works.
You can try to set reset the ram, and do a PRAM reset. Hopefully it’ll do the trick.
Please can you put the specification of the used i7 Processor?
i7 2600S is the only choice. 21.5 has limited power supply so low TDP CPU is needed.
3rd Gen Core i7 3770 3.4Ghz is it ok if i will use for the imac 2011 27" EMC no. 2429 they are the same LGA Socket 1155 H2 this Processor is come from The Desktop PC windos
@@ianesteban2294 The problem with 21.5 is the relatively weak power supply. Desktop CPU's consume a lot more power than the stock CPU.
Hi, I have a iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2011) 3.1 Ghz Intel Core i3 and AMD Radeon HD 6750M 256 mb, I'm wonder what upgrade I can make, like cpu, gpu.......
CPU Xeon e3-1275 and k610m gpu are the best and the Xeon is cheaper then an i7 with better performance
Great video, what kind of SSD do i need for mi mid 2011?and how high it can go?like the hd that it have right now its 512 mb..?
You could go as high as you want I believe. I mean you could even get like a 2TB SSD although that would be expensive
You can also leave the HDD and use an add on SSD (which is what I did). It’s a more work, but it’s worth it. It goes behind the optical drive. I have the 1TB and a 500 GB Samsung SSD in a mid-2011 27 inch. Well worth it.
would this work on a 2015 21.5 mac?
Please be careful That power supply could have still had a charge In it
I was also worried about that, it was really funny how he was just touching it carefree then talks about being careful with the motherboard
hi MAHDI, do you know how to avoid that?
Tianjiao Zhang you can press the power button for 10S and will discharge capacitors
When installing the SSD, did you have a problem with the HDD temperature sensor removed or in this iMAC model do you not have this sensor?
had the same issue. There is an hdd temp cable on ebay which on one side has touch temp. sensor so you can stick it to the ssd . Otherwise you can just install "Mac Fans Control". Works on Mac OS and Windows too. after installing just put the fan to minimum for the hard drive since ssd doesn't produce much heat
You need to buy the temperature sensor sold by OWC for 2011 and later iMacs. Don't use a software hack.
Is the processor the same on a computer? Please reply
wonder if this upgrade is worth it if all i use my mac for is web browsing and lite photo editing?
Nah. If you video edit yes, but browsing and light photo edits you shouldn’t need it. The stock i5 processor is a good processor, the i7 I put it in is just a little better.
Hello, I have a question, do you know if the power cord has to be original or can I use any power cord?
It shouldn’t matter
I just want to change the termal paste, is hard?
I have a 2009 imac 27” with core duo 2.. is it possible to do this and replace with Core i7? Is the mother board compatible?
No, the only upgrade you could do is the 3.3 ghz C2D.
What is the orientation I can't find mine
quick question, would this upgrade work in the 2010 mid year? Is the processor the same
Yes it would be nearly the same. Some screws may be I slightly different positions and you’ll need to do your research on what exact processor to get!
check ifixit, they have excellent tutorials to dissasemble any device
will this work on the i3 2011 imac?
I really want to try this but have no previous experience in upgrading computers. Makes me extremely nervous and I feel like there’s a lot of parts and could get overwhelming fast.. should I do it?
If you think that the performance difference is worth the money and time then yes. It’s really not that hard. It looks worse than it is
Tech It Out thank you so much for replying. Whats the difference between HD and SSD? I don’t really understand those two things but I feel like I’d need an SSD if I go thru with this cause I use high amounts of CPU when using my recording software.. (musician here if that explains my lack of knowledge 😂🤘🏼) thanks
Tech It Out and also if it’s not to much of a hassle can you post the links to the stuff you got for this upgrade? Would be SO helpful
Hello. I have a iMac 2011 27" i7 2600 3.4ghz Sandy bridge with a 95w TDP, I changed the processor for an i7 3770 3.4ghz Ivy bridge with a 77w TDP, both are LGA 1155, technically they are compatible, there should be no problem, but after installing it when you turn on the computer, it did not give image, the screen stayed black, it did not start and after a few seconds the fans speed up. I don't know what can be, the graphic card is not compatible? should I update the EFI/BIOS to accept Ivy bridge? or Apple incorporated some kind of blocking? I would like someone to help me or someone in the comments will guide me with this, I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. Thank you very much.
Hey Jose I know It’s late response and not sure if you figured it out, but from my understanding is that you can only upgrade to the exact CPU that Apple would have offered in the 2012 model year. Same with GPU’s. You just can’t pick any GPU or CPU. I have read that the i7 3770s would work and read on Macforums that someone had the same issues you had with the 3770k, but someone else was able to get the 3770s to work
