- My old PlayStation games collection is looking a little dated these days, so I thought we'd give them a little bit of a visual overhaul, by increasing the resolution x9. How do games intended to run at 240p look at 2160p?

Honestly I'm still extremely impressed with what the Playstation 1 was capable of with just 2MB ram and 1MB vram.

Those were the days. Games just worked and no patches needed.

you start to realize the lower resolution helped hide a lot of things like polygon seams and poor textures
It also made certain features like N64's anti-aliasing seem bizarre.
and the horrible texture warping (that was an issue in almost all ps1 games, that can be fixed in certain emulators, by changing certain settings)
CRT TV's blurring the image also helped with that.

@@MoayyedSalah That's probably the emulator's plugin misbehaving.
It probably was a real shadow map, just low res. Increasing the res of the game increased it too and the shadows keep working, just at a higher res which allows you to actually see the correct shape.

75-85% of a CRT TV weight is glass the picture tube is made of.
The front had to be thick to help prevent implosion as it is an extremely high vacuum inside them.

@@MikinessAnalog I think it has more to do that the relationship between surface area of the tube and the radius (assuming the CRT is a cone) is SA=πr^2 (1+arcsine(theta)).... which is basically a fancy way of saying a flat disc has a lot less SA than a cone. And that SA was heavy materials like glass and metal
CRTs 'had' to be cones because they had issues with convergence (blurry image) with the greater the angle the elctron was deflected at was, (which is also why most CRTs were not wide screen).

Just so everyone knows, the TVs we used as kids playing these games showed the graphics much different from the TVs we have now. If you notice, the colors and shape are much different with the new TVs vs the old TVs. Find yourself an older CRT tv and play the PS1 on it. Also, make sure its a 15-32 inch like we had. You'll see they don't look as bad as they do on your 60in 4k tv.
Yeah this has already been proven by another youtuber. Also, i didn't play any of these on ps1, we had better consoles at the time. But that wouldnt make as contrasting a video.
CRT is a superior technology. Sorry to disappoint the resolution brigade. Picture is lit at all times, better contrast, better blacks, better motion, zero lag. Games from pre LCD era were designed to work with the CRT display. Modern games look extremely good on a CRT ( see Digital Foundry ). What we need is a true successor to that technology
Yeah it looked BETTER on CRT but not GOOD by any means. I remember going back to PS1 when PS2 was the hot shit and thinking the graphics look janky as hell. And the N64 that came out just 2 years after the PS1 ran 480p resolution.
In short, the PS1 either just unlucky to be released when 480p was infeasible, or it was a shit stupid decision to make it run at 240p.
@@paistinlasta1805 Depends on the game. Something like Wipeout 2097, Exhumed ( Power Slave in the US ) , Resident Evil 2, Ridge Racer Type 4 and loads of others look good on the right display. Some will age though like Destruction Derby and a good few others

Indeed :). Most 2019/2020 vehicles (in fact anything from the last 2-3 years or so) don't have antennas :(. Even some performance vehicles from the mid-early 2000s didn't have antennas, and the difference in reception is noticeable.

1. ISO's are for CD games. ROM's are for cartridge games.
2. Some of us got a bunch of old games lying around in storage and are not interested in downloading ISO's for old games that we have no nostalgic connection with.

Completing the final car chase in Driver was the last time I felt alive.
I remember repeating the level dozens upon dozens of times and I never did beat it. I felt defeated.

Driver and Spyro really look good at 4k . You can almost pass spyro as an indie game nowadays to the uninitiated.

LightBox I kinda doubt they played in higher resolution, why would they play at a different resolution than the consumers would receive? It helps them fine tune it better to be on the same level... imagine if they added a bunch of detail in high res only to knock it down to ps1 standards where it would just look like a mess of pixels
Ryan Spaeth they did run higher than 480p but not for that reason but because down scaling achieves the same effect roughly as super sampling
@@Ryan-cy2jl hes right pal , consoles are for a wide rang of audience , but not everyone can afford the best technology out there . so they use lesser technology so that everyone can have access to the games . its same as now , game companies r creating games in at least 4k . but consoles are not yet running in native 4k, because a system that good would cost too much for the general public.

It would look horrible. Just because RE games use a flat picture for its environment, it won't look better. It would still look like pixelated mess in 4K and will create weird disparity between background and actual 3D models. It makes them look very off and "floating upon a JPEG" instead of being in a scene. There were many such games and they age *horribly*

Game graphics that really wowed me was Unreal Tournament.
Max Payne had pretty good graphics for it's time too. I think it was one of the first games -if not the first- to render bullets from firearms, not that that is particularly special.

i remember playing ps1 for the first time in 2005 or so, back when we had to go to ''internet/gaming cafes''

The owner was some Pakistani dude who equipped the PCs with CPUs from before 2000 which weren't even capable at opening dedicated websites in Windows XP. On top of that you could neither play a game on the PCs, no games were installed and the owner was supervising that every PC stood at factory settings.
@@JPX64Channel 1998 or something like that, was the ps 1 era for me. But i can still remember playing snes with a good friend of mine, (around 1994/95) mega man x1, f zero, pilotwings, yoshis island. So many great memories :)

gotta remember that we used to play on CRT/Tube TV's.... so the pixelation wasn't as bad as running these games on a digital monitor....
Yeah. Their videos are usually pretty awesome. But here, they left out Ps1 running on a Crt wich looks way better compare to an lcd. And to go even further, they could have added Ps1 games running via Ps2 with component on a crt. THAT LOOKS AMAZING

yeah I hate it that I no longer have a CRT monitor... everything below 720p looks so pixelated and ugly, both videos and games on a flat screen monitor.

PS1 looks so bad and pixelated even on CRT. People sometime forget how old games looks when don't play it for long time
240p 3d games never looked good on any type of screen. Not to mention the awful textures and very low polygon count (character faces look like square because of low polygon)
PS2 had feature called Texture Smoothing for PS1 games which made the textures looks less pixelated. PS1 games on PS2 can looks better than on PS1 but still awful

the shadow map was low res on the old res but it was based on the player model so it would get more pixels as you added resolution

Beetle PSX with the texture mapping fixes is easily one of the best way to play PS1 games. Even games like Ridge Racer look crisp.
What settings would you use for this?
@@raknikmik I would use RetroArch since I find it easier to run. If you use a gamepad, go to input settings and open the menu with a button combination. For setting up some emulators I recommend you to watch a video.
When running a game press that button combo and go to Options, which will open the emulator's options. Use PGXP (memory only) and higher the resolution there!
@@CLOYO I moved to retroarch and couldn't be happier. No more controller input lag. That in itself made the switch from ePSXe worth it.

I’m honestly surprised how good these textures look. You can see so much detail in 4K that you couldn’t see in the old days. I mean just look at the sponsor logos on that rally car... and Spyro... The PS1 version at 4K looks stunningly well. I mean it’s not much worse than the official remaster that came out over 20 years later....

I feel like the lower resolution gives the games more depth somehow, the higher resolution just exposes every problem with the graphics
This is why I love emulators you can tweak the fps and performance of the game and make them slightly better
I forgot how bad some games draw distances were. Other than that, everything looked fine to me.
Same here also the horrendous texture warping lol. Maybe because I had a N64 and only played PS1 sometimes at a friend's place.

I would have thought games would have eliminated pop up by now, but it's still around. I'm sure in ten years people will look back at GTA V and wonder how people could play it, especially having to use a gamepad (a baby's toy!) instead of VR tech. I've noticed a port of GTA will soon be on the Oculus Rift

Not really joke,see ff8 remaster for example,upscale it and compare differences aren't much noticeable...in addition you have a less good soundtrack than the original, the only thing are reworked pnj, but I prefer the upscale, the contours are too sharp compared to the landscape.

You can also use some kind of Software Z-Buffer in Emulators so the textures dont wabble around anymore and everything looks much better an smoother.

What we're seeing here though isn't how the games looked back then. These games are being played on an emulator, using a digital screen, which makes a huge difference. A digital screen "perfectly" displays the low res graphics (so it looks pixellated and ugly, at 200-300Px), but the TV we all played PS1 on back in the day wasn't digital, it was a CRT, which naturally smoothes the pixels because its "analogue" therefore it can't perfectly display the low res graphics, which ironically makes the games look much better.
@@wallacesousuke1433 I don't think thats really true, except for certain people. I guess it depends who you ask. I personally still love to play a lot of oldskool PS1 games despite todays games "looking" 10x better and usually playing a lot better. Some of my mates who grew up in the SNES & PS1 days can't play old games and maybe feel like you, that "new games make old games look too bad to play", but others are like me, we remember how amazing those games were back then, which allows us to still enjoy playing them today.
I guess I'm lucky in that I can really enjoy some modern games, but still also really enjoy old games too. Even ones I never played originally.

Find it hard to fathom that this video has 3k dislikes. Has almost 4million views at the time of this comment, and there will always be people disliking videos for no reason, but this is a gem of a video. I didnt own a PS1, but played most of these games on PC, and when I saw Fifa98 RTWC I was instantly taken back 25 in time. I got the demo on a PC Format magazine disc, and after countless hours of 2min halves (limitation of the demo), I finally saved up enough to buy it. Spot on with that one, as it has one of the most memorable soundtracks!

I remember when the PS One came out, I thought, well hardly anyone will buy it, anyone that wanted a Play Station already has one, it's been out for 5 years, people will either buy the newly released PS2 or a bunch of games for their Play Station. Then I found out the PS One was the best selling console that year, outselling the PS2, so guess I was wrong.
