It's 1978, and Ron Jenkins, a detective with the Huntington police department, suddenly straightens up on his couch at home, unable to look away from the TV. The popular "Dating Game" is on, where a young bachelorette, Cheryl Bradshaw, is blind dating 3 men, and Bachelor no. 1 is terrifyingly familiar to Detective Jenkins. That same afternoon, a parole officer called him to identify a suspected serial killer from a sketch, giving him a name: Rodney Alcala-that man is the same one who's on TV now, winning the show. However, the Dating Game Killer has no idea that his 8 year old victim from years ago is actually alive, and that she will be the one to ultimately take him down.

I blame the first judge. Even if the EIGHT YEAR OLD didn’t want to testify there’s an office who caught him in the act and a witness who saw him go into the house with the child. What more evidence do you need???? The justice system will faster give someone 100 years in prison for fraud than someone who violently attacks the most vulnerable, woman and children. It’s disgusting

Other more mature females, were entranced by his looks and his affable-appearing attention. I think this is partially due to the manner in which women in our society are conditioned. Thank God, that the woman on the TV show had the clarity to recognize his evil.

It's a strange feeling. I encountered a serial grapist who tried to get me to follow him when I was waiting for my friends at the theater. I was 15 years old and he must've been like 30-something. I took my phone and called my friend and he walked away. And while I was talking to my friend, I saw him turn to look at me a few times. I knew something wasn't right with him when he was talking to me, his eyes were creepy, like his pupils seemed large and cold. His smiles didn't brighten his eyes.
Anyway, not long after that encounter, I saw an article linked on FB talking about a weirdo who hung aroung highschool and college, and who kept trying to pick up girls. And soon after there were a few reports of girls who had been SA'd. They found the guy and arrested him. And I recognized his photo in the news. I'm 29 now, and the feeling I felt when he talked to me has stuck with me. It's something you can never forget. Instinct is such a powerful thing.

I was almost abducted at 9 years old. This was 1967.....He was young, cute, and driving a red convertible GTO.....I'm 66 today and it's still like yesterday. My sister and I were just one block from the house. It was a very busy neighborhood. This guy pulled us over to ask us if we knew where ROSE STREET was. .. I was not familiar with that street. As soon as I said I didn't know, he grabbed me....I probably weighed 75 pounds. I was just tiny. On top of that, I had stitches on the bottom of my foot, because I had stepped on a broken coke bottle...My little sister was with me, but I think she was too young for him. Thank God he didn't take my sister....but while he was trying to throw me in his car, I started SCREAMING! He couldn't handle that noise, so he dropped me. All the people on the street ran out of their home. A few tried to find the car. It was RED....but no one found it. I was NEVER SCARED. I knew God sent Angels to protect me. To this day, it's just amazing I got away. But I was a spunky kid. I'm one of 11 children....so that's probably why I was spunky!!!!! I feel so bad these women went thru this horror!!!!!!!

You have captured how and why the acts of Alcala will be a permanent wound as you took us all into the depths of hell that these heartbroken families faced. On a personal note, I don’t know how any one of these parents, siblings or friends have been able to survive from the suffering that this bastard had insisted on tormenting them over and over and over again. My heart goes out to everyone who had and will suffer from this bastard as he has left many, many other girls and women into the darkness and may they there be light shined upon them soon.

Still, today, women need to be taught to protect themselves and to feel their worth and to scream loudly when in the path of danger. I wonder if this first victim was afraid of her mother’s fragility or just afraid for her family finding out about what happened? Some women carry guilt and shame over other’s damaging behavior to them. Was she at a place where she knew that she shouldn’t be at her age? Did she feel that she would be blamed for the attack? She appeared to have little to no self-esteem. I hope that she’s received help & comfort and can teach others the dangers at our doorsteps.

The 2 surviving victims finally meeting after so long brought tears to my eyes. I’m glad they are finally able to heal after what that monster did to them. Such a tragedy that he was only required to serve such a minimal sentence after assaulting and nearly killing Tali Shapiro. So many women would be alive today if not for that.

It’s good to know I’m not alone when it comes to SA and to hear how they felt because I feel the same exact way with my ptsd. I’m trying to lose the guilt and wish I would have done something different. When she said “when evil touches you it changes you but it doesn’t own you” that sent chills because even I thought I would handle it myself like that mother in the courtroom but the spirit of god took over me and said two wrongs don’t make it right. This brought tears.

It's horrible how good people feel more blame than the actual wrong doers in so many crimes. But people like Mike who smashed the window & the salesman Donald Haynes show us that we can become involved & take action & that criminals need to fear strong communities! Thank You for posting the victims names in a full & respectful manner. uk

From my experience, in today's society, it doesn't do any good to call the police. They either don't respond or they let things slide for months and then contact you to hear what you called about and then still don't act on what you told them. Sometimes even if there are other witnesses. I reported a stabbing in my neighborhood a few years back. The police only contacted me after the court case and the person was found not guilty. I had video footage that would have put him in jail but after what the police did, I deleted the video. What's the point. You can't be charged with the offense a second time if you've been acquitted. Now, I don't bother reporting anything. What's the sense.

Her testimony is heartbreaking... The amount of times she said "I should've, I could've, if I had etc." those are the types of thoughts, guilts and regrets that can break a victim and survivors mind to the point of insanity. They can be pushed into addictions or suicide even violent outbursts.... Look at the survivor who got Jeffrey Dahmer caught. His life was destroyed by survivors guilt when he learned about the amount of victims before him and what his possible end could've been... It's heartbreaking and not many people want to talk about survivors guilt and what it does to your mind nor do these victims want to seek help because they fear what the world will think of them or they're ashamed... We should definitely be gentle with victims but never let them think they can't speak of their trauma and let them know we're there for them.... Robin's cases makes my stomach churn she and the 8 yr old were just kids... It takes a special type of monster to do what Rodney did and how he got so bold and arrogant to go on tv knowing people are hunting for him as wanted posters for him are out and he even used his real name. Thank God for Donald he truly was Talis guardian angel. He knew that if you see something you say something and thank got for the police officer for believing Donald.

I once stood at a bus-stop as an adult woman around 30 with one of my sons, around 4 back then, to go to do some shopping in the next village. While we were waiting and waiting, the bus was involved in an accident on his route so he didn't make it to our bus stop, a guy in a more expensive car crossed us and offered to take us with him to the next village. I denied and he wouldn't let go in a nervous and latent angry way. Only when I got more resistant he drove off. I learned his car plate in the case someone went missing further on. I can't wrap my head around that he was thinking an adult with a kid would get into his car. They are insane. My son learned the lesson to never ever get into cars of strangers no matter what.
That part of that guy going to a dating show and that woman losing her life is beyond creepy.

I’m actually mad at Morgan’s mom. “She was fragile. She wouldn’t have been able to take it.” Morgan’s mom was the ADULT, and should’ve been the one taking care of her daughter. The fact that Morgan didn’t tell her about what happened to her to protect her mom’s feelings tells me that Morgan was parentified to some degree and had learned it was her job to take care of her mom’s emotions. It should’ve been the other way around. Rod Alcala is the one at fault for what happened, but I partially hold Morgan’s mom responsible for the subsequent mental anguish Morgan suffered afterwards. She should’ve been able to go to her mom as a safe space. She should’ve been able to tell her parents and felt protected by them. Instead she held inside the worst thing that ever happened to her. My heart breaks for her.

I speak as the parent of an abuse victim when I say you're wrong to blame the mother.
My son came to me when he was being bullied at school; when he split with his first girlfriend; when he was having a rough trip after experimenting with drugs. He chose not to come to me after being abused until many years later for more or less the same reasons as Morgan didn't go to her mother. I must add that shame plays a big part in not telling. You don't want to see the pain of what you went through reflected on those you love.
It absolutely broke my heart that my son thought these reasons were more important than carrying this shame and trauma around with him for so many years.
I think we develop our own perspective of our parents from a very young age, and sometimes we misinterpret some things.
We see our mother refusing to react or confront our sister's loud and argumentative behaviour for instance, and see it as a weakness. We think she was too fragile to deal with it. But when we grow up we see that it was actually a strength.

I partially disagree - as much as parents should be your safe space and support system esp in times of abuse, sometimes people decide not to share their pain and suffering with their loved ones simply because they don’t want to make them worry.

Why the hell should they need to traumatize a little 8-9 yro girl to testify when there was a grown man/police officer who saw the whole thing AND the Good Samaritan who followed the car?!? So this guy can go on killing again and again and retraumatize the family with trial after trial?
