On September 20th, 2013, 9 y/o Andrew Hockensmith frantically calls 911 from the back room of his parents' pawnshop, where an armed gunman has just stormed in. In spite of the danger, the boy only cares about saving his baby sister and urges the dispatcher to hurry and send help.
Just 6 minutes later, police enter the pawn shop and are horrified to find 3 bodies. They soon determine that this triple homicide is no simple robbery gone wrong--instead, a shocking narrative is uncovered, involving betrayal, pawn shop gold, and a supposedly beloved pastor.

The little time that mom & dad had to raise this young man, what an amazing job they did. You can tell they were loving parents to their children. What a heroic brother to understand enough to hide himself and his baby sister. Most adults would run and save themselves, but this boy didn't. He saved his baby sister.
It’s beyond heartbreaking he has to endure this but it’s hopeful knowing that the love his parents gave added a strong wonderful person to the world. Knowing he maybe even start a family pouring those same values into them gives me a little more hope for the world.
This younger generation is so wonderful and thoughtful. It’s beautiful in such a crappy world.

I love that the 911 operator did NOT hesitate when Andrew said to hurry. Andrew is truly a hero to his younger sister..
You hear a lot of the bad operators who screw up situations by being rude or not listening. I'm glad they took him seriously and didn't ignore him.

Yeah, I was worried they wouldn't take him seriously because he sounded so young.
Yeah it’s good when operator can change how they talk when it’s a child. I know they are meant to just collect facts and stay emotionless but its very helpful in some cases to be reassuring
So many operators refuse to answer the caller, and so the caller is forced to repeat the same thing over and over. This operator understood how to have a proper conversation, which is even more important when talking to a child.
"I just didn't want her to be killed." That got me and made me cry buckets. What a sweet, poor, innocent boy. May God bless him and keep him safe all his life.

That's exactly what she did. They seem like such a lovely family. It's makes me so sad to know that Andrew didn't get to grow up with them.
Sadly the good thing is their love and values were poured into him so much that he exhibits it as well. They gave him a wonderful foundation and I have hope as he grows so will his personality and he’ll be a light to many others. When it’s his time to have a family he’s going to be a wonderful father and give the world more wonderful people like him and his parents.
Yes! They did a great job as parents! His father teaching him the importance of what being the man of the house does, protects and provides for the family. And the mom, giving her life for her children. It fills my heart that they instilled those values in him at a young age where when it came time to act, he did it! I'm pretty sure they were hoping that day never came where he would have to run for his life never mind taking and protecting his sister with him. I'm ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE they are looking down on him with great pride!

Objective morality only really exists in small sacred communities. 100s of Thousands of years ago when these communities would join other communities for festivals and other events they would require a police force because many of these sacred communities did not get along(this was also before money or gold existed so you cannot blame greed) you could see these police forces which much of the time fought with other police forces as the state, a group of imagined communities with imagined bonds and relationships. I can imagine many did not want to take their children into a state in prehistoric times but now we have no choice.
If what I said deeply effects you and you want to also leave the state you are what’s referred to as libertarian.

That really broke me. You could tell he didn't want to think about it, but couldn't stop. The disassociation while also being able to relay exactly what happened... the person doing that interview must have drunk-cried themselves to sleep that night. There's no way I could have handled it.

What a wonderful, loving son. He remembers his parents with reverence and thankfulness. He saved his sister and can share with her what their parents were like. It's crushing to see Andrew trying to look and sound calm and composed, but his body language, clasping the top of his head, his rocking sideways, and his rigorously formal language... He was holding himself together with every trick he knew, just to get through the interview and the day.
The Hockensmiths raised a damn good kid. May their memories be blessings, and Andrew and Naomi live well and with full happiness.

100% I watched the special about those kids in California that were kidnapped and buried inside the school bus (I believe it was late 70s) a few weeks ago and I was mortified at how they treated those children afterwards 😡

When the native Americans kidnapped settlers and the victims managed to be rescued or escaped, they were treated horribly by the town people and sometimes relatives. Was their treatment sort of like that? Forgive me if I am mis- understanding, your comment.

Not many people think about the trauma of the survivers. I literally just made a post about i hope that they have learned how to conrol the trauma that they have both suffered and are living happy and content lifes full of love and happyness. The thing that made me first notice the clear trauma when the police interview andrew when hes 13 and hes sitting in that chair and they ask him about that day to se if he remember seing that demon, he said "that day reminds me of the dead bodys, not his dead parents, i think that may have been his way of dissasosiating the murders and bodys from his parents in his mind. I suffered trauma (noting like this) however even to this day when i talk about that stuff its like i turn off part of my mind and am talking about it as if its not me. When i first started councelling thats apparently how my counciler could se there are things burryed that ive blocked out and dissasosiated from. It was very hard to talk at first unless it was in that kinda way.

I remember being held hostage at that age. The fear is gripping and the decision making required to survive forces a child to grow up faster than they should. But to see his parents pass in the process, I cannot fathom. What a hero and legend. RIP to their parents.

I am also a combat veteran and experienced a lot overseas so the same applies there. I think that's WHY I went into the military. Unresolved trauma issues. This happened about an hour away from me. My uncle who I was named after lives in Pulaski County said this happened in his neighborhood. That little boy is a survivor and will go far in life, wish I could donate him some awesome fishing gear like bibs, rods, tackle, etc. Fishing heals the soul. Stay strong little bro.

he deserves the biggest hug ever. for such a young kid to think of all that so quickly and be ready to sacrifice himself for his sister is amazing, situations like this show your true instincts, and his was to protect his sister. even so, he shouldnt have had to go through this.
Pastor Keith deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars without parole,
anything less would be an insult to the Hockensmith

recent scientific studies have shown that PTSD can be treated and even sent into remission with the use of EMDR therapy. it does NOT have to be a debilitating lifelong mental struggle. you CAN recover if you have the will. and this little boy does. i hope next time you leave a comment, you mention EMDR instead of hopelessness. there is enough negativity as it is

Dissociating or becoming emotionally numb/withdrawn is also a very common immediate response in the face of trauma. Poor kid, but I’m glad he’s growing up well and seems to be finding positivity in his life now.
@@samanthaw3845 That's me. I take medication because I'm so sensitive. With trauma, I go dead inside and become robotic all the while finding out it's better to have too much then none. Too much hurts worse, but having none is terrifying.
Hearing that stunned me for a long moment, no kid should ever go through that.

The way the husband would look at his wife in half the photos shown was so loving. They were such a beautiful family, and I'm glad their son can carry their memory on. I'm sure he's taken great care to pass on their kindness to his sister as well.

Andrew is a hero. Just 9 years old & with all of the terror happening, he still has the quick witted mindset to remain as calm as possible & saves his beloved sisters life. Then he recalls the events so eloquently & precisely whilst being interviewed by police. I am so glad that both he & his sister are living normal lives now, although the memories remain. But as he says, his parents are his heroes, just like Andrew himself.

Watching Dan walking through Lawson's Jewelers without a care in the world, and seemingly enjoying the mundane daily grind of life, is just surreal to me. It just goes to show that we truly don't know when our time will come and how it will all end.
RIP to those great parents. They were able to do their job in such a short amount of time in teaching their kid how to survive. Not only survive, but save his sister too.

18:29 another thing is to take away the alibi from that guy is that the kid did not immediately call as the shooting was happening. He waited a little bit to make sure it was OK then called the police meaning that he had a little bit of time to leave and go straight to the pharmacy

My mother was dying from 3 type 4 cancers and her minister came onto me. He was wanting to hug me and even kissed my neck. Even at her funeral he still couldnt keep his hands off me! Im not going to church as i dont trust any of them. They use the pulpit to make their victims think they care about you, but they dont. My mom passed in 2015 and im still dealing with this.😢
That man is a minister of Satan, he has done his job in making you fear going to church and getting close to Christ. I'm not trying to write off your experience but try and remember Jesus isn't man, I truly hope you are healed from your experience and look towards Jesus.

You must be around people who are watching out for you and others. Teachers elders family members neighbors. Make it known this man is touching and making you uncomfortable. Write it in a journal date and time .

I am from Harrodsburg, Kentucky. This was a tragic story that rocked the Danville community. I was in high school at the time and remember hearing about this on the news. Andrew is a hero, and I hope he and Naomi are both thriving.

Most "men of God" are pos. They use religion to justify or forgive their terrible actions. Im agnostic and I try to be a good person because I took an ethics course in college. It made me think about what Good and Bad actions actually are.

@@mustlovedogs5569 i knew him after all this happened. i'm actually from the town the killers pawn shop was in (somerset) and i'm assuming he moved to my town after the murder (or maybe he lived here before and his parents drove the 40 minutes to the town over to work?). i don't think he went into foster care, i'm assuming he moved in with a family member. idk though, i don't know much about him since i wasn't friends with him. i didn't even know this happen until i stumbled across this video! my brother still has him added on facebook and saw he's engaged now so that's nice! i'm happy for him :) glad he could move forward after something like this happened.

Wow such a heartbreaking and amazing story at the same time😢 This little boy just watched his parents get killed and he kept a calm cool head and made all the necessary steps to keep, not even himself, but his baby sister from being hurt. Most adults wouldn't be able to do that, and an 8 year could and thats amazing. His parents did a great job raising him in the little time they had. May they rest in peace knowing that they have an amazing son and daughter, and God bless the family and loved ones. ❤
“I just didn’t want her to be killed”. That spiraled me, but not for the reason y’all might think. Sure it’s hard hearing a kid say that. But it reminded me of being in Orlando with my niece and nephew. Nephew was 4, niece was 2. There was a scary looking mascot, and he held his sisters hand as they passed and then later said “I just didn’t want her to be scared”. In much the same way. No kid should have to be as brave as this little boy was..

My brother absolutely hated me from the moment I was born. I was in the emergency room almost weekly when I was a child, because of him. He would throw rocks from a distance and hit me in the head. He would also put me in a wagon and send me flying down a steep hill with a rocky river below. He tried to shoot me twice, once when I was very young and once as a teen. He even broke my nose when I was about 11. I always envied brothers that loved their sisters . I never understood why he hated me so. I never stopped loving him and never held any animosity towards him. Now, as old people, he has apologized to me. That little girl was very fortunate to have a brother that loved her.
Poor baby, "that reminds me of the dead people" 😢😢 he was so brave and did so good. It's amazing how he reacted. Some people freeze and others react. It's like autopilot just takes over your brain and your body reacts. I hope he never has anything bad ever happen to him again. That's enough trauma for several life times

And here's a wonderful story before my grandpa gotten saved he was in the Vietnam War he woke up one day and he was supposed to go and do parachuting practice well when he walked out of the tent and a tree branch went into his eye causing him to replace a radio station host instead and when the parachuting practice began the enemy was firing them and the U.S soldiers were falling out of the sky like birds and my grandpa was forced to hear it all as it went down and my now 80 year old grandpa said that it was God that spared him of that awful tragedy cause he wouldn't have been here today if it wasn't for that tree branch but as to why he was spared on that day? Unfortunately neither me or my grandpa could ever answer that question but if it helps you out maybe look at it from someone else's point of view or try looking at it from another angle.

i was in 8th grade at Boyle County Middle School when this happened, which is located 2 miles away from the pawn shop. our school was on lockdown for 5 hours and some of the teachers were crying but wouldn't give us any details about the incident other than it being a robbery. i remember being petrified because we did know that the suspect was on the loose and could have been anywhere.
very scary stuff and i didn't know it was a triple murder or any of the details until seeing this video almost 11 years ago to the day (it's currently Sept 18 2024). that boy is truly a hero for keeping his sister safe, and was so brave during that 911 call/the investigations. i hope he and his sister are doing well today.
