- In today’s video, Jacob and I go over the most OVERLOOKED issue on P2 Volvo S60/V70/S80/XC70/XC90 RN 5-cylinder engines. This issue can also present itself in the later model P80 Volvo S70/V70/C70 as well. Be sure to include this on any pre-purchase checklist - it could save you thousands of dollars!
Huge shout out to Jacob (@jrachfpv on Instagram) for helping me do this repair. He basically did all of the work, so to thank him please go follow him and be sure to message him if you’re in the New England area for reliable and professional mechanical work on your Volvo for very reasonable prices. If you message him, please tell him that you found him through this video!
Thank you for watching, don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe for more Volvo and other automotive enthusiast content!

Glad we could get your T5 running mint!
Good video! Too bad you’ve left out the important parts; replacing vvt and setting timing
Yup - useless.
Yup exhaust vvt pulley was dancing! 🙏🏻it solves the problem ✌🏼💚
Great content. I wish you would have shown how to rebuild the VVTs though.
Volvo for ever,.Gr from the Netherlands.👍
Any idea what the part number is for that rear camshaft seal with the ridges from Elring? All the Elring ones look smooth. The OE Volvo gasket 9443310 has the ridges and so does VICTOR REINZ 813363600, SKF 11809, and TIMKEN SL260038.
Interesting video, never thought about VVT wear and it's certainly not included in any of Volvo's maintenance recommendations, thanks!
What is the VVT that was replaced? The plugs on the cams? Where is it on an S40 non-turbo? Thanks!
I wonder if that’s what’s going on with mine. Would make sense given the 300k miles, stumbling acceleration and weird idle. 🤔 well here I come FCP 😅
Not a bad video. Your buddy Jacob has a lot of knowledge concerning volvos. He does a great job in explaining his techniques on the repair. Good job. Also, did you count how many times you said Jacob? Dude. Then, did you really ask a bunch of motorheads to critique your hair? Again, I enjoyed the video and the info. Thanks. I'd love to get some info to fix an 09 S60 2.5t I have. Be blessed.
what is wrong with it
Thanks for writing back. Turned out to be the fuel send on the fuel pump.. the car would lose power when driven aggressively. No peddle pressure. Got a thinkdiag tool. I found out it was fuel related. Changed the filter, no help, the pem module, no help, the gel pump. Ding ding ding! Bingo! Car runs great now
Hi Jacob
How are you ?After watched your video ,I can see you are very very good in Volvo.
Can I ask you a question? thank you very much hope you can answer and sold my problem .
My 2007 Volvo V50 2.4I with 19,9000KM, I changed the timing belt, water pump, oil pump O ring ,crank seal ,camshaft seal ,because I don't have camshaft blocking tool to block the rear end of camshaft ,(I try my best not to move the camshaft)
after all the job done ,it starting right away ,everything going good and smooth.
Here is my question : if the VVT camshaft is missing a bit by accident ,this will trigger check engine light P0 171 on ? I clean the MAP sensor two times , engine starting good , no power loose on speed up, no black smock on exhaust ,just code P0171 keep show up.
If you can spent some time give me some advice and sold my problem ,will be very appreciate !

Hmm… I’m really wondering if this is what’s been causing an issue with my 2000 V70R. It’s painfully laggy taking off from a stop most of the time, gotta ride the clutch more than I should need to. With the AC on, it’s practically undrivable. Once you’re over 3k rpm or so, it rips. But under that, it’s a slug.
Can you update part when he was replacing vvts and setting them up?
Does Jacob make house calls to southern Maine?
I may have missed it but how many miles were on that engine?
Haircut is looking good!
great video a.nd Tip J
Hoping this is what wrong with my 07 xc70, did an oil change and now skips and wants to die at idle and throws an 0016 code. If i drive it down the road it drives kinda fine, min you are off the gas it falls on its face. Checked plugs and all electronics new, new timing belt, new head gasket. Nofticed head bolts were not torqued to spec, so tore down everything to check that timing was correct and didnt jump a tooth. All look to be right on. No deflection in belt. All brand new volvo parts, single owner had all work done at dealer and they dont torque head bolts to spec. Going out now to check pullys, there had been times i thought vvt was messing up as it sounded like a diesel engine. I would shut it off and restart and would go away. 🤷🏽♂️ Hope this is the video that gets me back on the road, hope i dont have to barter with you for help or parts.

Had a similar issue to this the fix ended up being replacing the (fuel rail pressure sensor) if you haven’t replaced that already I would take a look into it
Making a whole video about VVTs and not showing how to install them... good job..
You must have stopped watching before the 3:00 mark :)
@@volvbro so tell me where you show how to adjust the timing gear by rotating it before tightning it up to torque spec?
I have two base model P2 V70's, 2002 and 2007, both with the naturally aspirated B5244S. I think both engines have VVT on the intake only. How does the info in this video play for my situation? Would everything more or less transfer over from the higher spec engines? I will try to do the test for play, although both engines are under 100k original miles with really good lubrication histories. Also, are there rebuild kits for these VVT's? I know nothing about this subject, is it even advisable to rebuild them as people do with BMW vanos?
Hello! Your 2002 might only have VVT on the intake side, but your 2007 should have VVT on both intake and exhaust camshafts. The process is identical for the B5244S. There are no rebuild kits, just replacement parts from Volvo. I hope that helps!
How much is the labor cost?
Breather systems needs to be updated.
I see my car 😍
camera doesn't need to move along with your mouth.
its nauseating trying to watch.
