  • In this episode, we have Annie Hopper, founder of the Dynamic Neural Retraining System, or DNRS.
Annie developed DRNS in 2008, after she herself fully recovered from unexplained illnesses by implementing her own daily program of brain-based rehabilitation, which focused on rewiring faulty neutral pathways in the brain
Here, she explains the five pillars of her program and how you can rewire your brain to recover from chronic illness.
    TIMESTAMPS:
    0:00 Intro
1:07 Approx Annie’s life before her chronic illness
2:23 The ‘perfect storm’, triggering the start of Annie’s health decline
    5:17 Annie’s symptoms
7:58 The onset of electric hypersensitivity syndrome
8:40 Having to move out of her home
10:23 The mental impact of Annie’s decline in health
13:25 How Annie’s relationships were affected

38:27 Long covid, and how DNRS and brain retraining can assist with recovery
41:53 How would someone tell the difference between symptoms of limbic system dysfunction and real triggers
44:52 Annie’s advice for someone who is struggling to cultivate the belief that they can recover

Thank you for this interview. After 19 yrs of CFS, I found DNRS 2 1/2 months ago and nothing has done for me what this program is doing. Persistence, and remember your 'Why', you will get there. I haven't had to rest but 1 time in 2 1/2 months, and that once was because I had 4 major events in one day. GO ME!!! Thank you Annie. I look forward to life after recovery.

@@santeenl Hello! Thank you for asking. I am at about 4 1/2 months of practice and continuing to progress to full recovery. It takes different lengths of time for different folks and I have accepted that. I no longer "expect" my body to jump into ship shape of what I want (forcing solutions) rather I do my practice as the program is layed out, letting my brain rewire and the symptoms fall away as they will. Which I see several small shifts each week.
I can now eat things I haven't in many years and physically can see many improvements, like grocery shopping and no longer have to rest in my car in between stores.
I track them with post it notes on a poster board for inspiration. It's so wonderful to see it half-full of even little shifts. Particularly my thinking. Catching negative thoughts and redirecting seems to be key and the biggest tip I've heard from those who have recovered. Blessings to you!

I was diagnosed with ME/CFS in 2012. Very ill. Couldn't work. Still ill 2020 but heard Annie Hopper talking about her recovery from MCS and I thought, "That's like me! My body overreacts to EVERYTHING. Any stimulus is too much - noise, light, movement or activity, certain foods..." So I wondered if what made AH better could make me better, whether my limbic system was overresponding to what it perceived as "danger". I ordered DNRS and did it Sept 2020 to March 2021. It made me LOADS better. I then topped it off with learning about Dr Sarno's work - and hey presto! I am no longer ill! No symptoms by Dec 2021. One relapse April 2022 but fine since then - bit weak and no stamina due to having been inactive for so many years, but not ill.
In a nutshell, our brains give us symptoms to protect us from perceived danger. Also brains love patterns so we get "stuck in a rut". Luckily our brains are neuroplastic - we can change them. This is the key! Good luck to anyone out there on the journey to wellness - stay determined and you WILL find a way.

Could you elaborate on how Dr. Sarno’s work assisted in your healing process? Once identifying the problem, did he have a healing program of his own; or did he just help you understand concepts?
I’ve been doing DNRS for many months. It’s helped aa great deal, but could use an extra boost

    • @MEhealthcoach

@@YoungChunds Hello. I read a book by Dr John Sarno called "The Mindbody Prescription". He doesn't have a programme of his own (and he's dead now) although Nicole Sachs was a student & colleague of his. She believes that if you understand what Sarno outlines in his books (that the brain creates pain to protect you) and also journal, then your body no longer perceives the repressed emotions as dangerous and therefore doesn't protect you from them with pain. I recommend that you look up Nicole Sachs - she explains it better herself, has a lot of free resources out there and explains "JournalSpeak" in detail. Dr Howard Schubiner also has the same ideas as Dr Sarno and has free info out there too (good recent talk with Dr Chatterjee explaining it - I will find link and post it). Anyway, back to your question: Sarno's work felt like the last piece of the jigsaw for me. Things fell into place and I could feel my mind shift. However, you need to understand that i had been unwell (starting with depression, then Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, then full-blown M.E.) since about 2002. I had to fully focus on my recovery. I worked on understanding what M.E. is; why I had it; what I was doing to perpetuate the illness.... which took me years and even then didn't stop it! I'm sure everyone's journey is different. So Sarno just helped me understand the concepts. There is something called "a book cure" and reading his book ("Mindbody Prescription") did that for me - although i had done a ton of groundwork and was beyond ready! I was wondering if I would be ill forever, as so many people told me.... but miraculously I wasn't - which actually was what i always believed. There were people on the Internet telling of their recoveries and I always believed I could do it (I sometimes wasn't sure I would but I always believed I COULD!)
If the DNRS course has helped you, then you are getting closer. Your brain is changeable (neuroplastic) and you are changing it. You might have old trauma that keeps your brain in fear patterns (doesn't have to be "big T Trauma") or emotional stuff like Nicole talks about that you need to release before your brain feels safe enough to stop protecting you with symptoms. If that sort of thing is still there then no amount of brain training can cure you.
Sorry if this all sounds confusing and crazy - it is complex and the reason you are ill will depend on who you are, the experiences you have had and how your survival system has reacted to them.
All the best anyway, Kate xx

@@MEhealthcoach thank you for the in depth response, Katharine. I seem to find a lot of comments from people who, while appreciate Annie and all her work, were missing one key element to give them that extra nudge. I’m in the process of reevaluating some information and will look into your references.
I’m a little undecided on how to deal with emotional trauma part (lower case T trauma in my case). When I first got sick, I read Carl Jung and Freud on how to analyze the subconscious or shadow self and reintegrate it into your conscious. After reading Annie and others I learned I might just be reinforcing trauma by over analyzing these things. They said not to ignore or repress it, but at the same time don’t over analyze it, just let the thoughts come and go. Does this differ from what you found to work???
Even at times during DNRS when I felt 90% better, I would still have negative intrusive thoughts. One-on-one trainers assured me this would go away with time, but felt there must be some other mental exercise to alleviate these sudden thoughts.
Congrats on having lasting success, and thanks for the info

A former Lyme sufferer who acheived full recovery reminded me of this and Im doing daily practice now as I hope the final piece of the puzzle. From minutes 7:00 to 8:00 and 18:00 to 21:30 there were some eureka moments for me: that a big part of these conditions is the brain's abnormal processing of sensory information. This can certainly help to explain why folks need to fundamentally transform their relationship with their world, their own bodies, etc.

The limbic system isnt impaired or injured. Its working perfectly fine. Its perceiving danger everywhere and sending ⏰️ alarms. Its job is to keep you alive. It doesnt care if you suffer. So it will throw on alarms and ask questions later. What we have to do is bring down our baseline and turn off Alarms the symptoms will go as a consequence.
