SEGA's Original Gran Turismo Clone Nobody Remembers

- The Dreamcast gave birth to many new racing games. Among them is a mostly forgotten racer developed in-house at Sega, aptly named Sega GT. How did it stack up against the Gran Turismo titles at the time and is it worth playing today?

As we all do eventually
SEGA Racing Games are Relic's
He should ask Bob Igger for advice.
I hope the editor for this video is getting paid fat bucks. He literally wrote, performed and recorded a McDonald's version of Daytona USA which no one asked for but we clearly needed it.
Steven spielberg GO!
Wow I just got to that part and yeah that takes a lot of dedication to do those kind of edits that's great❤
Note, the PAL version of Sega GT is actually the better one due to the increased amount of content, as the game adds Alfa Romeo and Fiat to the available manufacturers.
But isn't the PAL Version locked to 50Hz, or does it have a PAL 60 Mode?
@@Eispfogel you can bypass this with most emulators
Dreamcast was the first console to officially support PAL60 video mode and Sega Europe made developers to support it in majority of Dreamcast titles.
@@Eispfogelyeah but I personally didn't really see big differences between Pal and Ntsc frequencies
@@wirti94you could tell if the devs didn't optimize their games
I wish more racing games give you the ability to build your own car like SEGA GT did. It adds to the freedom honestly.
The New WRC does!
Supercar Street Challenge has a unique one, with the bumper styles being adjustable with how much it “morphs” onto the car
Automation/BeamNG crossover is this dream in a nutshell.

If you are ever able to pick up an OG Xbox or if Xemu eventually fixes all of it's issues with it, Sega GT 2002 is a massive improvement in the series, and really lets you fully appreciate all the unique mechanics working together in this game.
Yeess. I remember that game as soon as you mentioned it. I sunk hundreds of hours into that back in the day. I think it is superior to every Gran Turismo besides 2.
@@RobotDCLXVIGt4 and 5 are superior by far
The only downside is the lack of "carrizaria" or whatever the car creator was called
I had that game on xbox, was so photorealistic for the time
I loved this game and I got the online version too that was a game changer
The Body Original Customization and OC car upgrade is the best thing from this game, what a variety it was for Millenium era

I do actually know of another game from that era that lets you build your own car. It's a PS2/PC game called Supercar Street Challenge. It's more on the arcadey side so the performance customization is a lot more shallow, but the visual customization is interesting. The other notable thing about that game is that it has some ridiculously elaborate shortcuts on some tracks like skipping over half the lap but doing stupidly narrow technical routes so you only make a small time gain.
We need more Dustin-Yaris analog horror videos.
yup.
So he covered the shining..so how about Blair Witch for Mario Kart....8 keeps coming back from the dead.
That Yaris makes me scare already
I had a Dreamcast growing up and I remember playing this tons.
Its janky as all hell and doesn't compare even remotely to Gran Turismo, but its got its own charm to me, honestly.
That being said, Sega GT 2002/Online on the original Xbox is a FAR AND AWAY better game in comparison, with *FAR SUPERIOR* handling.
Facts about the game (because I know way too much about this game for my own good);
- The PAL release was a later release that came with additional cars, from the likes of Renault, Peugeot, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Mercedes-Benz, and a couple additional cars for Audi. It also has *the worst handling car I've ever experienced in ANY game;* The Renault Clio Trophy. That car makes the Mcs-501 handle like a Formula 1 car in comparison.
- There were four car bodies that were exclusive to the original Japanese release (and no where else), these being the *Basica* (Austin Mini Cooper), the *Platypus* (BMW Z3 M Coupe), the *Amble* (Porsche 911, also somewhat resembles a RUF CTR2), and the *Blowg* (Lamborghini Diablo).
- If you obtain EVERY CAR in the game, you're awarded a bonus vehicle. The bonus vehicle in question? *A Mitsubishi Minicab truck.*
- The game also saw a port to PC, albeit a port I wouldn't recommend playing. Has numerous graphical issues.
also; you need a racing wheel to get much out of playing racing games on the Dreamcast. The analog deadzone is really wide, making it incredibly difficult.
@@DragonSlayerKyo I've heard (and seen) that the original Dreamcast wheel isn't even that great as it has quite a bit of deadzone itself.
Not sure about third party wheels.
@@ThunderTHR third party stuff isn't great. I really wish this system wasn't really rushed out. the whole thing was a "red panic button".
Lotus Challenge on GameCube is worse.
@@DragonSlayerKyo Third party ports are better on Dreamcast (Rayman 2 DC is considered the best version, also the one they used for the 3DS port, Soul Reaver was better there than on PlayStation, etc.) And after Dreamcast left the official scene, GameCube took the mantle as the best way to play 3rd party titles.
The editing on the channel isnt talked enough...Top Tier quality man....
didnt laugh about a deez nuts joke for a long time... here i did
I own a copy of SEGA GT 2002 that came with my copy of Jet Set Radio Future for the original Xbox. Such a great two-in-one value buy.
Jumpscare times if you're adverse to horror like I am
1:43 - Security cam turns on, Yaris jumpscare
2:18 - Door suddenly closes
7:25 - Facecam suddenly glitches
10:32 (mild) - chat message pops up with voice
18:33 (mild) - whole screen glitches
53:31 - Multiple Yaris jumpscares with glitchy voice
1:07:38-1:07:53 - The Yaris speaks (more horror than jumpscare)
1:09:01 - It's the tax office (not a jumpscare but funny)
1:09:11 (mild) - Yaris glitches on screen for a few seconds

There was one game on the PS2 that let you build your own cars. It was simply called Supercar Street Challenge. I had it. It was just a generic, low budget racer. The car building part was its only real selling point. Racing Lagoon on the PS1 also deserves a mention. While you can't design your own car, you can customise existing cars to the extent where they're completely different from the car they started out as. Like, you can make a front engined car mid or rear engined (when you do this, it also changes the look of the rear half of the car) and you can swap any engine into any car. For instance, if you want to give a Toyota Starlet a bus engine or a bus a Toyota Starlet engine, you can do that. In general, Racing Lagoon is probably the most unique racing game ever created. I recommend playing it to anyone who hasn't already. Back when I played it 13 years ago, there was no English translation available for the game, but someone has made an English patch now.
I remember Sega GT Fondly. I still have my original copy for the Dreamcast and the sequel on the original X Box. I emulate them both on my laptop now. It wasn't as good as GT, but it was/is still a great game.
As always the editing in these videos is always SS+. Your editor is the freaking best.
He gave up on making videos.
Qualifying is similar to GT1s qualifying.
If you get the Supra GT(MA70) in GT1 and do a qualifying run, despite you having 2x more HP than the rest of the grid, they out qualify you.
But then you zoom past them in the race.
i love your content always so well edited and high quality I haven't been able to catch a stream yet tho
I love seeing your videos on older racing games, a lot of games I've never played before or only heard a little about.
Really love the Car Building aspect, pity you can't do any wacky layouts but the fact that it's there is awesome especially for the time period. I wonder if your cars were drifting a lot because of the Weight Distribution being very front biased, potentially a mid-engine would've been better for the AWD. That being said the Evo was perfectly fine so not sure.
Hopefully you can find it in you to return to this game in the future and see what else if there's a custom car combo that works better. Very weird issues though and I assume it's all related to the game just not be able to cope with the speeds and lack of traction.
Phenomenal job by James on the editing once again :)
He was making his own videos....but then Gran Turismo 7 attacked and killed him in the algorithm. He stopped making videos after.
There's also MSR on the dreamcast, i originally started playing this game because of the soundtrack by Richard Jacques. Basically the ancestor of PGR.
A must play, as it's one of my favourite Dreamcast racers.
The pink yaris jumpscare had me 😂😅
Gotta love the horror edits on the video. Good job to you and jams
I'm honestly amazed by the fact that he pulled a horror thriller vibe with just a racing game. Props to the dudes and dudettes who worked on this.
Bought this game day 1. I wasn't much of a racing game fan back then but this game made me into one.
The McDonald's bit and song sent my sides into orbit, I was not prepared for that 😂
Oh man, I had forgotten about this game on my old Dreamcast. I remember hoping it to be a Gran Turismo equivalent but honestly was no where close. I remember feeling that all of the cars, regardless of configuration handled the same. Each car didn't have it's own personality so to speak. But I do remember building your car as a Mid Engine, Front Engine, how much displacement and number of cylinders to be a really cool feature that more games really should have adopted.
In the end though, none of it really made a big difference. Still..thanks for the memories. Was still a decent game.
The EU version of SEGA GT is absolutely GOATED due to way more cars including the addition of Alfa Romeo and FIAT.
The editing is absolutely top as per usual.
This game had a lot of potential! Id love to see some of these elements in modern racing games.
Great vid as always dude! :)
"We can literally get sponsored by McDonalds" Closest we'll ever get to that is the hidden 69th Challenge Series Event in Need for Speed Most Wanted, the "Burger King Challenge" where you drive the BMW M3 GTR and winning the race unlocks Junkman parts for use in My Cars
Glad to see this being covered! Sega GT 2002 was one of my first sim games before the OG Motorsport (which still runs better than built from the ground up!) and brings back a lot of good memories.
We definetly need a mcdonalds parody cover of the daytona usa theme. 😂
MAC DONAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALD'S
I just remembered any time you bought used parts in this game to save money that part would blow out mid race every time at the same exact point in the race.
The first time I saw James I thought he was Skrillex
LOL

Love the cool cutscenes we get from Dustin's house as well as the stuff added by James!
But Dustin should have used the long German word for tax office at the final joke.
Still great with the pink sentient Yaris meme though.
I loved the intro lol great work and great editing.
God this game had such weird random physics. I don't know what it was. I finished this game with my dad but we never managed to find a car setup that didn't oversteer or understeer in the weirdest of ways. MSR, VP and 24h le mans on DC were much better imo.
Automatic, Drift, and break before a turn. best way to do it.
Makes it feel less Daytona and more "Outrun 2" which is far better in my opinion.
I remember having the bundle on the OG Xbox that came with Jet Set Radio Future and SEGA GT 2002, it was my first simcade game and all of those menu sounds bring back some memories as they carried them over.
We love this editor!
34:53 the irony of getting a burger king add right afterwards 😅
I literally did for the bk stackers
Hey Dustin, another dreamcast racer you should try is vanishing point, features detailed tuning, stunts, and a soundtrack that goes hard!
It’s an amazing day if Eden uploads. Keep the skill issues coming
Dustin, that intro was amazing. you could actually be a filmmaker damn
I had this game on PC, i bought this with a Wheel (which i couldn’t work) returned the wheel but kept the game. This was pretty much my Gran Turismo if i couldn’t Game on my PS1 due to Limited time on the TV reasons. Still love it, still the Closest Gran Turismo Clone imo.
I specifially remember Tuning my CRX to go 300 kmh! In recent I tried that tons of times again but i couldn’t do it.
Dude hands down one of the best racing simulator games I love the things that Dreamcast and play in your classroom without without your console when you were in school but it was just cool that they added something like that to the whole it was an actual game you played on the virtual memory
Alpha Romeos were also known for their incredible ability to rust through completely in less than a year.
That reputation comes from the early 1980s when most cars rusted like mad, but most cars didn’t look, sound, handle or go as well as an Alfa Romeo, when crap cars fell to bits nobody notices.
I do remember Sega GT 2002, a game I played much less than JSRF that came in the same package. Guess I didn't think about there being a Sega GT game before that.
I had that disc. It came with my Xbox. I had that and Halo to keep me gaming when I made the switch from Playstation. Still a favorite. Good memories.
JSRF is goated
Holy shit this game had qualifying unlike 90% of racing games today 😮😮😮😮
I spent a TON of hours on this game. Great graphics and physics for the time
I like this editor
The carrozzeria cars just reminded me of Racing Evoluzione from the OG Xbox (Apex on the American version)
Don't forget Metropolis Street Racer, it's the first entry of the Project Gotham Racing series.
It's the first videogame to have the Opel Speedster, and Sega GT was the second.
I remember it, because I played it on the Sega Dreamcast and PC and even Sega GT 2002 on the original Xbox. As far as I remember you can build your own cars, turbocharged wankel engines, AWD, the game has a lot in store.
@30:14 Automation is a car company tycoon game. You run your own car company and build your own cars.
I had a Dreamcast, I played this game A LOT.
I miss those times.
Setsuna Yuki also played SEGA GT a lot. She loved it.
I remember playing this on our Dreamcast back in the days... And I also remember that I was very frustrated as a young boy because it was way too hard 😅 still have the console and the games, great piece of historical hardware
Loved being able to adjust the boost. Only gran turismo 1 had that feature
The "GARDEN_OF_EDEN" on the bottom left corner of the camera footage was a nice touch
Eden's back with a twist, *YARIS JUMPSCARE*
1:08:56 this is when the real jumpscare hits Eden
Hey Dustin, you should check out GT Cube, which was Nintendo's attempt at taking on Gran Turismo in the sixth generation.
Didn't that game have an unlockable N64 logo car?
Sonic R too
@@TempoLOOKING Sonic R came out one month before Gran Turismo, it wasn't a GT clone.
It was made from a repurposed game engine of a company that flopped.
I remember Sega GT, Sega GT 2002 and online on the OG Xbox was awesome.
I didn't think there was a way of making midi speech more terrifying then Faith.
I was wrong. Now we need a Yaris "Mortis" death scene
Carrozzeria is Italian indeed, it'd roughly translate to "body shop", many of those companies that do bespoke versions of production cars use that name, such as Carrozzeria Touring
The Japanese company Carrozzeria has the same logo as the one in the game.
51:03 I love this contradiction. It perfectly sums up humanity lmao
Best underdog Gran Turismo competitor was during the PS2 days called Enthusia Professional Racing. The rain at night experience was something else, was a awesome with 900deg steering wheel.
What version.
shoutout to James' My Chemical Romance shirt. a man of culture.
I never forgot! Had it on the DC back in the day and still have a copy for windows... Which by some miracle, still works in windows 10
I understand the sentiment of GT license tests being "unenjoyable" but their real purpose gets obfuscated by events having license requirements; teaching a player that's not familiar with motorsport or cars in how to pilot any vehicle to it's potential (within the physics limitation of each game) is a great addition. As an example, the new EA WRC has Rally School; doesn't prevent just sending it in a Rally 1 car, but the resources are available should you want to improve and understand.
Gran Turismo ruined them. So did R Racing.
first game i owed on the 1st ever xbox great game in my childhood tuning the vaxhall speedstar up good old days
my bad wrong saga gt
I never played this version, but I sunk a lot of hours into Sega GT 2002. I thought it was a great game and I honestly enjoyed certain aspects more than Gran Turismo.
I think about this game all the time! Loved playing it lol
Im not sure why the Carrozzeria name was used but im guessing its just because its something modification related (in a Sense as it means "The Mechanics shop" in italian) Carrozzeria is a Audio sub company based off Pioneer, that was rampant in the 90s! In the 80s Pioneer used LonesomeCarBoy, but when the 90s hit, Carrozzeria took over and it was in almost every vehicle in japan in some way shape or another. From woofers, to 2-3-4 way deck speakers, tweeters, headunits, TV/Navigation, badges/emblems, equalizers, you name it. Still pretty big to this day.
I remember Sega GT. Every day when I look at a 90's JDM Kei car I am reminded of Sega GT. If I go to Japan and I see a Suzuki Alto Works or a Mitsubishi Toppo, some random song from Sega GT plays in my head. As a kid this game shaped my taste in cars in exactly the same way Gran Turismo shaped the taste in cars of everyone who had a playstation as a kid.
Most people rag on it due to the floaty handling, which is fair (even if I don't think it's much worse than GT1), but I'm really happy that you recognized the game does some really cool stuff no other game since has done. And like another comment said, yeah, the PAL version is the move, there's a lot more cars.´
As for the fast cars being unruly, it really depends on the cars, even the original cars; but as soon as you start dumping upgrades on them it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll have to tune the suspension and diffs to make the car drivable. It's a bit like the upgraded gearing being trash until you fine to it; it seems the devs expected everyone to fine tune the suspension and stuff themselves.
The handling in SEGA GT is like Driving Emotion Type S. LOL. 😂
@@damarfadlan9251 No, I played both games and Sega GT is much better.
always makes for a good day when he uploads
1 hour of edited pure content, gotta love it
57:38 Try San Francisco Rush 2049, that game has amazing handling and the shortcuts are wild, engine sounds are somehow closer to a Dyson than GT4's, but that's really the only negative I can come up with, easily my favorite arcade racer
I hope in the future you can get Sega GT 2002 going. That one was so good.
I had a blast with this game back in the day. It was quite the challege though.
for a game that lets you build your own car you should play supercar street challenge for the PS2, it has a really cool custom car builder that was way ahead of its time
I remember this being the game where i fully realised SEGA was going away for good.
The handling of this supposed GT alternative game was so frustratingly bad, while GT was basically a work of art that I was from there on 100% convinced SEGA was never ever going to catch up to SONY.
34:55 You have given me the perfect annoying song to sing in front of my bud and everyone else, in the car, while we go to McDs because of them
XD That fills me with indescribable joy. Sing it loud, sing it proud.
yoo that intro gave me Paranormal Activity vibes
this is what i meant for customization
not the fast and furious style, but the official racing style. change from engine, drivetrain, suspension etc
I’d love to see you check out Metropolis Street Racer, I’m not sure if it’s your style but it’s by far the best Dreamcast racing game. It’s beautiful and plays well with some great gameplay variety, it also has one of the best soundtracks ever and a really cool radio presentation, as well as a real time clock. Compared to the handling here, it should feel a ton better, I can drive it quite comfortably.
Personally, my favourites are Le Mans 24 and F355 Challenge. Le Mans is an excellent racer with seriously impressive texture work and a really enjoyable sim-cade handling model that has enough depth to make things like the time attack mode hugely rewarding.
I also owned Sega GT (bought at release) and would put it behind all of those, but safely above Daytona 2001.
Don't forget about CRAZY TAXI. Good game. The PC ports suck.
I think I played Sega GT before I played my first Gran Turismo.
Sega GT is a forgotten gem. Thanks for this vid.
Had it on the Xbox. Solid game. I knew they wanted to make something great when the used performance parts I bought failed mid race
great intro bro nice Creativity
I remember playing this. Sooo good.
I knew I wasn’t crazy when I played this game and couldn’t get past the god damn licenses
was funny mate, like it(You have more hair in the keyboard ,then on you head mate XD)
James vs Yaris is like the Yaris vs Yaris toyota commercial back in the day
Wtf is that production value. Awesome video
It must have been amazing playing this game on its time
Man i love this game. Great memories. Drag race where cool.
Been playing R Racing Evolution on my PS2 last couple weeks and I definitely felt the pain of forgetting to save couple a days ago 😂😂
I've played this game in the early 00s on PC. It also has a Drag Racing events.
I've been looking for this game for 24 years.
