    **NOTE: It is NOT safe nor recommended to leave an infant sleeping unsupervised on a topponcino, or any other loose bedding material. Please supervise your newborn or infant while using a topponcino at ALL times. My references in this video to allowing your baby to nap on a topponcino were only intended to mean 100% supervised sleep (e.g. in a caregiver’s arms while using the topponcino, or on top of an otherwise safe sleep surface immediately next to the caregiver who is awake and directly observing the infant.)

    When I read the title I thought it was preparing an older sibling for a newborn baby! So if you need ideas for a future video, I'd be very interested in how you prepared Kylie for Mia's arrival and how to address any negative feelings that may come (jealousy, guilt from the mom, etc.) Thanks :)

    • @spena12188

      Agreed! This video is very timely as I’m 35 weeks pregnant with #2. Would love to see how you prepared Kylie. I watched the sibling rivalry and managing siblings already but they seemed to be more geared toward older children and siblings.

      I'd say play introduce words "wait" and "your turn".
      Simple games when you're playing together and your child needs to wait 30sec, 1min, 2min... for his/her turn to play with the same car. Just to gain understanding that he'll get the toy back.
      And say "I'll be with you in a second or few minutes" on different occasions. This allows them to know that mummy will attend to his needs ASAP 😊

    Video suggestion: I'd love to learn how you baby-proofed your house for little ones. I know you explained a little of this in your "creating yes spaces" video, but what is the process that goes into making these "yes spaces" safe? My husband and I are trying to decide what needs to get done before our first baby arrives!

    I love the Montessori method. I'm not a purist as it just a method. Agree regarding the sound machine that's not strictly Montessori, but it's not harmful. Unlike the baby holders that can affect their development. Thank you for sharing.

    Omg this is soo perfecttt and helpful!!!! I’m 34 weeks and due next month. Thank you thank you Ashley!! I definitely listened to your other videos advice with making sure I don’t have these baby “holding” or battery operated devices, it makes so much sense with the way you explained why. I’m excited that you helped me start my Montessori at home journey. I’ll look into the topponcino since it’s my first time hearing about it :) I read up some history about it that they were first designed by Dr. Maria Montessori in 1940s. If you have videos or additional advice on newborn sleeping 101 or napping schedules, that would be great too. Love the video, as always keep it up 💖

    Returning to this now im past the 20 week scan..... i think im too relaxed about the actual baby but more concerned about my toddler lol. She's amazing but our environment is not one i have much control over or much energy to prepare for in drastic changes that we really need so that my toddler becomes a bit more independent by the time we have the baby. Most of the time it will be a lot of independent open ended and pretend play. Which i guess is fine. Practical life participation and helping out with the care for the newborn is probably what we will have to do but definitely need to work on the routines that will give her more comfort once the baby arrives. And some time without the baby fo connect with me and her grandmother.
    I feel so much more relaxed this time round having had experience with using Montessori since I found the channel from 4 5 months old.

    Here's a ChatGPT summary:
    - Ashley is a mom of two girls, Kylie (3.5 years old) and a 21-month-old.
    - She discusses how Montessori is a relaxed and simple parenting style, especially for newborns.
    - Three major categories for preparing a Montessori home for a newborn: baby essentials, sleeping space, and movement area.
    - Newborns need very few essentials: feeding necessities, comfortable clothing, and interaction with periods of independent play.
    - Montessori sleeping spaces should be minimal, beautiful, and calming, not necessarily in a separate room.
    - Sleeping space essentials include a place to sleep (floor bed or bassinet), a changing area, and a comfortable chair for feeding.
    - High-quality artwork at the infant's level in the sleeping space can be visually stimulating.
    - Blackout curtains and noise machines are helpful but not Montessori-specific.
    - Montessori movement areas for newborns should avoid baby holding devices and overstimulating toys.
    - Movement areas should be clean, organized, and have a neutral color palette to promote focus and concentration.
    - A Montessori topponcino is a soft, consistent place for newborns to lay, sleep, and be held, providing security.
    - Ashley partners with the topponcino company for a giveaway on her Instagram.
    - A low mirror in the movement area helps babies see themselves and their environment.
    - Montessori visual mobiles in a specific sequence (Munari, Octahedron, Gobbi, Dancers) cater to developing vision.
    - Options for hanging mobiles include baby gyms, pickler triangles, or ceiling hooks.
    - High contrast black and white cards can be used during tummy time or near the changing area.
    - Montessori newborn rattles and interlocking discs can be the first toys for developing hand muscles and later for teething and crawling motivation.
    - Ashley has an e-course and a UA-cam series on Montessori at home for birth to age three.
    - Main message: Preparing a Montessori home for a newborn involves focusing on minimalism and simplicity, with specific essentials for baby essentials, sleeping space, and movement area, and avoiding overstimulation and unnecessary baby holding devices.

      I would focus on simply changing out the activities that are available on the shelf to some that are more developmentally appropriate (and I have activities videos that cover all the various age ranges in my playlists, if you need some ideas!) :) Also, if he’s already pulling up - you might consider adding a pull up bar to the mirror, or just a low ottoman for him to pull up on. 👍🏻

    Thank you for another great video! Have your kids ever taken things out of shelves ecc and taken them all around the house and left them everywhere? This has gotten so much out of hand in my home, and after watching your video I fear this enormous visual clutter is not only affecting me but also my 4mo baby. Do you have any tips on how to keep everything in its place?

      That’s a daily occurrence! 😂 Nothing too special to recommend other than lots of modeling of the cleaning process, and involving the older sibling(s) when possible as a collaborative cleanup. Oh, and lots of patience! It gets easier as they get a bit older. ☺️

  •  3 роки тому

    Thank you for this video, I am due in 2 weeks and needed a recap of these. I am working on the movement space, but I am worried of my 2.5 YO jumping on baby sister. Any advice ô how to secure that space?

    • @HapaFamily

      Just create a movement area for baby that is kind of off to the side or tucked away in a corner where he/she is not directly in the middle of everything happening. My oldest was a brand new two-year-old when the baby was born, and we never had any issues. Supervision is always going to be key under the age of three!

    I have a question 🙋🏼‍♀️
    I put in my registry all toys with neutral colors, but then found a topic which says that babies like the bright colors more and it helps their vision develop. And it’s why the majority of toys made with bright colors.
    Is it true? Does some studies about neutral colors exist and proven ?

    • @HapaFamily
      @HapaFamily  3 роки тому +2

      Newborns can only see in black-and-white, their color vision doesn’t really start to develop for a few weeks. But even then, it’s not so much about not having bright colors at all, so much as it is not overdoing it with the bright colors all over the place and making everything look super overstimulating. Aim for a neutral pallette, with pops of color here and there! 😉

    • @lizzy5437
      @lizzy5437 3 роки тому +1

      You don’t always have to talk to them while changing/not every change. It’s just a good opportunity to do so. That’s like saying you have to talk to your partner every single time you sit down for a meal. It’s not natural. Doing socially what’s natural is what’s best.

      They both still use them in their rooms, even at 21 months and almost 4 years. But at the same time, they will also fall asleep in broad daylight in the car or while I’m holding them if they’re tired enough. I’m sure there will come a day that they don’t need them anymore, but in the meantime, it’s just too simple and easy to forgo it, and it’s a guarantee that they will sleep well... so why not? 🥰

    I really wanted to give this lifestyle a shot. but thinking on it; it doesn't suit my personality. I thinks it clashes a bit too much for. I really ;ole spme aspects of Montessori but others not so much. Mostly, the bedroom. i just feel most comfy with a crib in there otherwise I d be up all night worrying what's going on in there. Alive? hurt? roamin around too much? ON the movement area I dont so much at I like ( or at least the idea of) a bouncer or wrap in case I have a load of chores to do. The toys I love bc I hate those battery operated toys anyway. they're annoying and I feel like they don't reach the child anything. I've always been a minimalist person so i feel like all I need is a LoveEvery sub and some STEM Toys for later. Idk, there's a lot I like about Montessori. Im also legally Blind too so i think a lot just stems from not being able to keep the closest eye on my baby. ( poorbaby, theyre gonna that mam may trip over them if too close to my feet) Even if I don't embrace the entire life hopefully I can incorporate as much as I can. i love your channel and will continue to watch. so I can learn more about this. So if you have a toddler already, how do you lay the newborn on the floor without worrying about them being trampled by the older sibling. I have a 2 week old and a 23 month old who would just be all over her the second I lay her down. I'd be nervous about the younger one getting hurt by the older one

    • @HapaFamily
      @HapaFamily  3 роки тому +3

      Under three, supervision is key! My daughter just turned two (literally, two days before) when our second was born, and we managed just fine without any major incidents. ☺️👍🏻 Just find a little corner that’s kind of out of the way to create the movement area, so the baby isn’t in the middle of everything that’s going on.

    • @berrypatch5583
      @berrypatch5583 3 роки тому

      I would say if you had a 4 and 6 year old hopping and jumping boys...movement time is completely supervised and if you need to lie them down...I set up a minicrib with a mirror on the outside and a mobile on top for looking and rolling time or a nap while I worked. Girls often are much gentler than boys. I am expecting my 8th and I love this set up as it allows them all time with the baby, but when I am not able to 100 percent supervise the baby has a happy place. Now soft baby wraps are amazing when they are awake and you want the little one to be with you and you can always also wrap the bigger baby while letting the little one have floor time...that is a win win as well. Making a routine rotating these allows everyone to learn how the baby's days will go and when they can expect a turn cuddling the littlest one.
