You are on fire Jay!! Schmincke has powerful pigments. I have several colors, in 15 ml tubes and some Godets (they pick up easily, go on for very time). Transparent Orange is possibly the prettiest orange I have ever seen. I really like the lovely granulation of Potters Pink and its tone. I use quite a lot of their Sepia Brownish, (it's powerful) and Transparent Sienna, in short, for me a great brand, easy to work with. In their official site pigment colors they have two Cobalts, the light and the Hue. The first is PB28 only pigment, the Hue ( Maybe your "Deep" ) is PB29+PW4. Great review again, and thanks to your fans for making it possible.

They make such great paints. One thing I've noticed is they always set the best in pans of any brand I've used. They always dry smooth and uniform and rewet beautifully.
Schmincke are so lovely. Although they are rich in pigment, the colors are very ‘modest’ and ‘well-behaved’. Perfect for landscape and other traditional watercolor paintings. My top favorites for Schmincke specifically are Potter’s pink and Delft blue (PB60). The latter makes lovely gray’s when combined with Transparent sienna.
I’m a huge fan of Schminke. As you said, they paint so very smoothly, it’s a pleasure to use them. Also, I have the basic palette, and I like the choices.
Damn. I love Schmincke! And not just because that`s the only good brand I can buy where I`m at ,)) There is a few colours from these swatches I lack. Today I bought Payne`s grey bluish and Perylene maroon - which is redder than maroon I think, but I like it)) I think I`ll have to get that Perylene violet, and oh that Rutile yellow...I love how it looks! I was hoping you wouldn`t pick up that vein that started getting into green :D Spinel brown is quite opaque undiluted, but I love that pigment more and more. It can mix beautifully with some colors. I`m looking forward to your more in-depth review of these, using them in painting. It`s a great selection! Thanks for sharing!

That is a lovely range of colors, nice that they sent a lot of the earths. Cobalt Blue Deep is single pigment PB74 according to Schmincke’s documentation. It’s beautiful. Schmincke are expensive here in the states too, but I recently picked up a few of their unique pigments like PBr33 and a few others. That transparent orange is a superb neutralizer for blue and greens. They do rewet very nicely, but I haven’t painted as much with them as my other brands, and I don’t really have a complete palette of them, mainly just unusual pigments. I’m finishing up a sketchbook and was flipping through it the other day, I was astonished by one painting I had done with my Winsor Newton paints- that little sketch just glowed compared to others in that book. Gave me a new appreciation for that palette!
W&N paints are really good. It's difficult to choose which I like best between them and these Schmincke paints. I'm going to have to get painting with them both ☺️
Schmincke are the best on hot press paper! Because of the oxgall they go down so smoothly. The only weird one I got was Transparent Ochre, which had an incredibly strange texture. Still paints fine though.
Thanks for this review! I just got a Special Edition mixing set of 6 from Jackson's and have room for 6 more. I'm intrigued by the Payne's Gray Blue, the Burnt Umber, Trans Burnt Sienna, and the Perelyne Violet. I also would like a convenience green. This has really helped narrow down some choices. I'm not a sepia fan but rather like this Schmincke one too. Oh, and the PBr33!
Schmincke is more and more becoming my favorite pick of watercolours, along with W&N. Here in mainland Europe they are not crazy expensive. I am a big fan of their perylene colours, but there are so many wonderful paints to choose from. :D
I'm not sure if they've had a pigment revamp of their Cobalt Blue Deep, but it's a beautiful shade for landscapes and I use it as a slightly warmer alternative to the standard PB28. I bought my tube about a year ago and it's single pigment PB74. Love your videos and comparisons mate. Keep em' coming 😄
I have a small starter set that I haven't tried. I've heard such wonderful things about them that I'm afraid I'll immediately order a bunch of those and quit using anything else. 😂 More seriously, I haven't had the time to swatch them out, but I'll do that today. I went to the Schmincke site and had to download the brochure to find the pigment information. According to them it's just PB74. Handprint seems to concur with that. Who knows? Definitely not me. Beautiful colors.
I love horadam watercolours, but like you said i avoid the strange mixes. The transparent earths were a recent addition , and until then I really disliked their standard earth shades. And the reds often aren't as vibrant to me as W&N some of them having a cool cast. But overall they are gorgeous paints and they keep extending their range. I also loved the mahogany brown for its superb granulation. Thank you for these awatching videos, they are informative and relaxing to watch.
Theres only one transparent orange I like and its White Nights Orange Lake PO17, fugitive, and discontinued. That PO71 looks like one I might enjoy. The Scmincke paints have been wonderful to paint with, but they do have some odd pigments and mixtures.They have a great range of the staple pigments, really nice Cobalts and blues, and some unusual and enticing single pigments. Im not fond of those convenience greens. :( My first purchase with Schmincke years ago was for Ultramarine Finest, because I didnt like granulation. Haha I dont think the super granulating mixes are your thing, but you have quite a few there that are used for those expensive specialty super granulating tubes. Thanks for sharing. I love learning about different watercolors and you give great reviews.

I can understand why, as they can be very beautiful, but I just don't find them all that useful in my actual paintings. I almost always wish I hadn't used the granulatiing paint 🤣
Excuse all my comments today on your videos, I just found your vids and I really enjoy your comparisons and swatches. Anyway, I also much prefer the more subdued European style of paints like Schmincke to the intensely in-your-face bright and vibrant ones you find in some Asian or American brands. Holbein is the most cost effective brand where I am so most of mine are from them, and I appreciate that unlike other Asian paints they seem to go for the more European style for the most part. So I quite like to use muted and subdued colors (or neutralize the ones that aren't) and then add dashes of vibrant gansai or even gouache for highlights or areas of interest. I do more concept art and modern illustration type of stuff that typically is done with digital but recently I've changed to doing almost exclusively traditional because it's so enjoyable, and a mix of water based media can be a blast to use with European style paints as a base.
I got a whole bunch of these on my palette as well, they are so much more inexpensive tha Sennelier's, M.Graham's or Daniel Smith's (and actually even local, like same state within the country local) to me here in Germany 😁 BTW, I looked that Cobalt Blue Deep up. Schmincke's official brochure says it's only one pigment, PB 74, maybe someone got the chemical compounds mixed up when they added a second code to the description or something?

@@JayNathanWatercolor Hmmm, let me see, I usually buy at Gerstaecker, who sell art materials in Germany and I believe some other bordering EU states: The item with the lowest price there being 1 halfpan out of price category costs roundabout 4,25€ (same cat. pens of DSs cost double that), which makes around 3,35£ or 4,87$ 🤔 The same halfpans at Jackson's would cost 4,50£, so they are a bit cheaper here than outside of the European Union , I guess, but not much. A good amount of the added cost for you might be because of taxes and shipping costs 😕
there is a transparent ocker, which I like. although for mixing I still use the classics. either a transparent yellow or the siennas. and I do have indian yellow as well. which I could tone down, in case I wnat a special tone of colour palette in on of my exercise paintings (none of mine are 'real' paintings - still learning). so I barely use it. but I am sure, I would use it more, if I wouldn't have the indian yellow.
A bit strange to see double-pigment Burnt Sienna or Indian Red. They are often meant for mixing so you end up with really a number of pigments in one color. Great swatch anyway. I am tempted by Mahogany Brown. It's included in Galaxy Pink which I like a lot. Should be great for mixing.

Do you mean the Perylene Violet? I've used other perylene pigments (Perylene maroon, Perylene Scarlet and Perylene green) in the past and they dried much duller and lost saturation. So I guessed that this one would behave in a similar way.
some use potterspink for painting skin or textured skin - depending on the motive of course (and for mixing those granulating mixtures as well). I know from a artists recommended choice for his classes, for that particular type of paintings - skins and such. portrait, nudes or you know, where there is more to seen, than just a small person in a land-/cityskape. the suggested Terra Pozzuoli or English red. but if that tone is used in differnt motive...? I guess, rather when someone likes to paint very very loose or semi abstract and wants something different happening on the paper. other than that, I think, all three colours are rather limited in there use.
Schmincke make excellent watercolour paints, but my preference is Daniel Smith as I can get them at a reasonable price near where I live in Madrid. But if you buy Daniel Smith via Amazon then you can expect to pay a lot more. I've recently bought three primary colours of the brand QoR and they are absolutely stunning to work with. They are the most expensive of the watercolour brands that I've used, but the quality is noticeably superior. However, at my relative newbie level of ability, I still have to learn and practise a lot and top quality paints won't make me a better painter! They are fun to take on a test run though...
I do want to try QoR sometime but I'm not sure I would like them. Will never know unless I try. Daniel Smith don't really interest me. Especially at the high prices outside the US. They are good quality though. I'm much more into the look of the European brands like Schmincke and W&N.

if you mean py3 is odd for example is very transparent pigmetn choicen becouse of this.etc. i generally feel Horodam feels better than w&n. whati s very close second.
So difficult to say what I feel about Schminke paints. They are expensive and oh so perfect in their pans. Which makes them a little intimidating, as does their intensity. For one reason and another I have too many watercolours. I really like my W&N, but equal to them and maybe a bit better is the barely discussed Daler Rowney. For just messing around I love the White Nights, even though they have their shortcomings. Anyway the very perfection of these paints deters me from using them more, their slightly whacky naming protocols always baffles me, They do stay where you want them to be and in a way this doesn’t help me want to use them more because I started using watercolour to try and find more looseness! So it really depends on exactly what I am painting. I don’t really like the most vaunted brand much, I feel they are for collectors rather than painters, and wonder at the huge expense of them. I guess I should love my Schminke more than I do and use them and make them messy. My current favourite is Aquarius. Lots of choice and definitely a painters paint that doesn’t intimidate me at all, the messiness of how they come just takes away the preciousness. They are little WNs but more reliable and more fun than the well behaved ones. I think I like the difference between pigments to show, and except for a few granulating ones these all perform too much the same. After experimenting with so many different brands I think I appreciate Windsor and Newton a LOT more, so really I came full circle…. But my all time favourites are Kremer! I really liked your swatch out though, it really made me see what I like about different watercolour brands. I think if I was doing illustration that needed a lot of consistency these are what I would use.

So it really depends on exactly what I am painting. I don’t really like the most vaunted brand much, I feel they are for collectors rather than painters, and wonder at the huge expense of them. I guess I should love my Schminke more than I do and use them and make them messy. My current favourite is Aquarius. Lots of choice and definitely a painters paint that doesn’t intimidate me at all, the messiness of how they come just takes away the preciousness. They are little WNs but more reliable and more fun than the well behaved ones. I think I like the difference between pigments to show, and except for a few granulating ones these all perform too much the same. After experimenting with so many different brands I think I appreciate Windsor and Newton a LOT more, so really I came full circle…. But my all time favourites are Kremer! I really liked your swatch out though, it really made me see what I like about different watercolour brands. I think if I was doing illustration that needed a lot of consistency these are what I would use.
Thank you very much. I think I'm a bit like you and came full circle too. The more brands I've tried the more I am starting to appreciate my Rembrandt paints. Especially for the price I can get them for here. Roman Szmal are great too ☺️
