- Today I make a new reference chart for my granulating watercolours (...such a chore...such a chore!!😁) Whilst this isn't every single one of my paints that have some kind of granulation, I've picked the most obvious ones.
I also show a fun exercise to do with them, and a couple of my paintings.
Majority of paints are from Jackson's Art:

It's an absolute joy watching/working with granulating paints. x
They're wonderful aren't they?!
Gosh I love your rock art! Never thought of making it as art - I must try it!
I hope you do! It's utterly enjoyable!!
These are gorgeous. Would love to see you creating using these both with the way you do the landscape scenes and the "rock" plays. You've inspired me to pull out my Schmincke granulating sets and some of my DS Primateks.
I will try and video it next time I do one! I'm really glad you are inspired 🙂
Hi, just to let you know I posted a video of making one of the rock paintings 🙂
Oh wow your paintings are so gorgeous 😍 and I love the swatches so pretty 💖
Thank you! Just looooove granulation!!
3 minutes in but I looooove your landscapes and the stone paintings ❤️
Haha! Thank you ever so much!
It was lovely seeing you explain the way you like to use granulating colours, I really need to use them more often, they looked lovely in your landscapes 😊
Thank you!! I just think they're delightful to play with!
Such an amazing collection of granulting pigments absolutely stunning!! Your use of this pallet is beautiful too!! 😍
Thanks ever so much!
Love your paintings!
Thanks so much!
Lovely paintings you were showing!!! 😍
I love to paint with granulating watercolors. I use them a lot for my animals and their backgrounds.
These small landscapes are gorgeous, I want to try something like this too.
Thanks so much - yes, I think they're wonderful paints!
When I wonder why I spent a fortune on a specialty niche style-you are an inspiration my dear. It's because they are impressionist and multi-dimensional paints. Your compositions are minimalist, which looks really good when the paint darkens at the edges. Bravo!
Haha! It's my speciality! I find the materials things of joy, aside from anything I do or don't use them for.
Hi Helen, these paints are absolutely stunning. I don't have any granulating colors yet, so I'll watch this video again to help me choose the colors when I'm ready to buy them. Thank you for sharing your paintings too, they are beautiful.
Thank you!! My love of granulating watercolours has not diminished since making this video - I recommend them!
I loved the video. I was explaining granulating watercolors to a friend earlier today, and showed her some of mine. I then forwarded this video to her. I hadn't had the chance to watch it until now, but knew you do good demos so had it in my "How to paint" file in UA-cam. I am so glad I sent it to her. I just finished it and it was terrific. I have most of the DS brand you have, but none of the rest. Now I have more ideas on where to use them in my paintings, and what brands and colors to purchase. Thank you!
Anastasia ❤
Thanks ever so much! That's really kind, and I'm glad it didn't disappoint you!!
I LOVE the cards, they’re really beautiful. I’m sure people have bought all four to frame, I know I would! I’ve just gone mad in Arteïs again & blown all my holiday spending money - it was such fun!😊. I bought a few of these granulating colours so thanks for the video which helped inform my choice.
Thanks ever so much! Ooo - I hope you have a delightful time with your new things!!
Thanks great video. I have mostly Schminke but some Daniel Smith. I guess I didn’t swatch them big enough with lots of water, I was disappointed. After watching this I am going to swatch again and use them. Your work with them is stunning. Jo in France 🇫🇷
Hi Jo! Thanks! I'd definitely experiment more with them - also the kind of paper you use makes a big difference.
I was thrilled to discover this range, i love my watercolour as freaky as possible and looking at your swatches makes me do a little dance of joy 😂. I’ve ordered the Schminke 50 dot sample card for the entire range as a little spring gift to myself and i’m half excited and half worried that all my other art supplies will end up gathering dust. Your “playtime” pebble art is stunning!
Ooo - lovely! They're just wonderful!!
Lovely swatches thanks
Thanks!
Awesome!!! Thanks for sharing!!! Subscribed!!!
Thank you so much!
I am so jealous that you are able to use the Roman Szmal, and other brands that have honey in. In my country, temperatures reach 56 C or 132.8 F. I have no a/c, so there’s no way of stopping the paints from going mouldy.
Oh no! That's such a shame! I didn't realise that happened.
Could you please show us how to paint a simple beach tutorial similar to yours?
I will add it to my list of planned videos to make!
@@helencryer yes please
@@helencryer I love the four card scenes that you did with the blocking. would love for you to do a video about those.
Thanks ever so much!
Here's a video I made on the process:

Beautiful little paintings- I wish more people would do paintings of these super granulating paints as it’s the only way you can REALLY get an idea of how they behave and look… why people insist on just doing paint swatches only I’ll never understand….
Thank you! Paint swatching is definitely fun to do though!!
@@helencryer But it’s soooooo boring to watch - seeing a painting unfold is much more engaging…
I'm afraid I'm quite sad, as I enjoy them! Especially when I researching a specific paint I want to get.
@@frenchgrama It's so funny you say that. Because I find it so boring when people just keep talking and rambling. But I find it calming seeing watercolor swatches or things like the pebble painting that's also a sort of swatching to me.
OOh, I love those landscapes.of yours (and the colours too, of course). Can you share your process for painting them - or perhaps you already have?
Thanks! I did a video just this week!
ua-cam.com/video/-r_lfjs4qKk/v-deo.html
@@helencryer Thank you, just watched it, it's really interesting to see the process!
Thank you! Just blocking out the shapes and colour by numbers really. I don't really know how to do 'proper' watercolouring where you blend it all!
love granulation! Also love your paintings. Wondering what paper you use and also if you make your own mattes for your paintings or if you buy them where they are from!
Thanks! I used Canson XL Watercolour paper (I think these show off granulation better than 100% cotton paper) and I get the mounts from Amazon, from someone in the UK who cuts them.
Amazing watercolour artwork, scenery and detail are amazing.
Have you thought of trying peerless paints ? .
Thank you very much! I don't know about them - will go and have a look!
@@helencryer scrawlbox sell old boxes and one of them currently has the peerless paints in it inc lots of other art goodies .
Thanks! I did go and look them up after you mentioned them and they look heaps of fun! I will probably restrain myself from getting some though, as they are dyes rather than lightfast paints.
please can you show your favourite granulating mixes?
Other than letting them flow into each other a bit in the rocks, I don't mix the granulating paints much, because most of them are already multi-pigment.
A lot of the reds are redundant. TOO SIMILAR
I don't know if it's my poor quality videoing, or a difference in screens, but I didn't really show any reds in this video - just Indian Red, and some dusky pinks and browns. Personally I think they all look quite different.
