    Very basic, but helio cerulean (their actual phthalo blue GS - PB15:3) and ultramarine finest are on my core palette of 6, can't live without them.
    And on the sligthly extended core palette, I have cobalt azure and delft blue, love those for shadows and lights.
    I have more blues from them, but use those less often, so don't want to mention those, even though they are all great :)

    Schminckes Ultramarine blue - the 'normal' one :-D - is a stable for a lot of classic landscape and cityscape painters. I did see some, who use the french ultramarine as their go to - but then again, when mixing greys - they then rather use the regular ultramarine again. interesting, isn't it?

    Thanks for the video! This makes me wanna pick up a tube of the dark blue. Pb 60 is one of my favorite blue Pigmenta and while I have their delft blue the dark blue seems a touch more like the van Gogh indigo im starting to gravitate towards due to how it looks and mixes.

      @@JayNathanWatercolor I love the hue of DV but it doesn't granulate much; I just got Oto's dotcard of the MG and it's a similar hue, but granulates more. Might try that one too.

    Cobalt Azure is lovely. The Cerulean Blue is always a great workhorse for skies especially. I was impressed by the Delph Blue, which I have in hard pastel form only. I like the Helio Turquoise and Cobalt Turquoise too, although they're not really blues.
    Any of the single pigment, non-fugitive blues would be worth trying. I'd love to see a blues (maybe 5 max) mixed with some other colors to create some greys, violets and greens for example.

    That Delft blue looks really luminous. I would love to see some mixes with that pigment. I love the ultramarine finest. It seems to have a slightly different hue than the regular ultramarine. Also sometimes it is nice not to have the granulation. The cobalt turquoise is stunning.

    Love those blues! If you are in search of an affordable Cobalt tourqoise, Roman Szmal has two different ones, their PB 50, which is very green leaning, and called Cobalt Teal, and then a PB 28 one, which is even bluer than the Schmincke one. I love them both, and they are easy to rewet. These only come in full pans. The only drawback might be that they are made with lots of moisturizer (dunno whether they use Glycerin, or Honey, or both), they are a lot like White Nights in consistency. So if you are in a humid climate this may be a concern - not for me, though. I have both, and use both, and love both, and don't want to do without these colors any more. Well, if you only use Schmincke, then my favourite is Schmincke.

    When I first bought Schmincke I got the cobalts. More recently I bought French Ultramarine and I notice it's virtually the same hue as the Cobalt Blue Deep. What I love is how differently they act. The Cobalt granulates SO MUCH and the French will either granulate a lot, or not so much, depending on how you apply it. You can get an amazing smooth wash if you want. I have Helio Cerulean (got it in a set) and it's fine... I have the PB 16 and I find it strange. It's very blue for a PB 16 and it's also rather opaque, as they note. Oh and I thought the PB 35 is also really nice, and rewets well from the dotcard. I love that they have the two hues of PB 60 as well.

      @@JayNathanWatercolor Yeah I agree, there is a lot of variation in PB 60s between brands, and I find it cool that they put two variants in. Although it goes without saying there could be better names for them, like Indanthrone blue and green shades. Or maybe "bright" and "deep."

    That Delft blue is lovely and well named. I have the French Ultramarine in my main palette. It's all due to one of your previous videos. lol On my monitor, Cerulean Blue Hue and Helio Cerulean look almost the same so if I were going to use one of the two, It would be the Helio Cerulean. Honestly, I'd just go with the Cobalt Cerulean instead. lol Lots of lovely blues here, but many of them seem very similar to others. Thanks as always for the interesting video.

    Thank you for this synopsis of blues. In my Schminckes I seem to be unable to see the difference between Phtalo Blue and Prussian Blue. In your video I see an ever so slight difference. As a beginner, I assume that they have different uses and probably react differently when mixed with other colors. But I have not ventured yet that deep into the blue-green forest. Do you use the two colors for different purposes? I am a little lost re. these two.

    ther is a difference between phtalo blue and phtalo saphire blue. in your swatches I mean. although, my swatch from phtalo blue is much more intense. and the phtalo blue and the regular ultramarine blue can be more intense. and then they look different from each other. to me it seems phtalo saphire - here in your video - look more similar on the upper part of the swatches. I have swatches of the colours in my basic set of 18 colours ready. and right now I also compared french ultmar. with the regular one. to me it looks like, they look much more different, when diluted. didn't pay much attention to that before. and now I know for sure, when dried, I prefer delft blue to their indigo. even, if I had to mix it e.g. with burnt sienna to get it more grayish. when painting, I think, I like indigo. but when dried - not. (had the same experience with two different indigos. one from van gogh and the other from whit nights - which I don't use anymore at all).

    • @nursen2106
      @nursen2106 2 роки тому +1

      but they are a classic brand and the naming was derived from how it was developed at the time. that is why I wonder, are they realy confusing or rather others? I know, that schmincke offers some variations, they call - the modern version. and it makes more sense to me, to consider, they are only adapting more slowly to changes and resist, changing a recipe. that is why they then rather create a something different and new

      @@nursen2106 I guess it is what one is used to. I started with QoR and they name nearly all of their single pigment paints after the chemical name. Indanthrone Blue, not "Delft Blue," for example, and so on. There is only one really oddball exception in QoR that I can think of which is to call what should be Manganese Blue *Hue* just Manganese Blue. And there are a few really common exceptions, like Green Gold which is a single pigment but an often-used name. Their multi-pigment paints, such as Sap Green, use very common names that wouldn't cause any confusion. I really like that because it makes it so easy to compare across different brands that use the same naming convention. And it has really helped me learn a lot about different pigments. But if one started with paints that emphasize hue names then I could see that one could develop a preference for that.

    I've tried to love the Phthalo's, honestly, but they just do not do it for me. In fact I've developed a complete dislike for them. For me, as a Schmincke user, it's FUM for the hue and granulation, Kobalt Azure as the cool, and Kobalt Light as my mid. A traditional choice, but it works for me.
