as a jaded NYC designer, its tough for me to respect modern artists. But this guy is seriously fucking awesome. The fact that he not only uses his machines for his art, the fact that he continues to create new ideas and never stay content with 1 module or concept is extremely impressive
"This is impressive and clever but there is a total lack of empathy for the insect. The cricket is not a collaborator, it is trapped and trying to escape. Look at the drawing again, see the desperate lines" says one of the comments.
You guys obviously don't accept that it's modern art. We're doing an arduino project in my Design 2 class for college and it's called "Incidental Line Redux." The robot draws for you, but you make it draw incidentally via code. So just because the robot is tied to the cricket hopping around, the robot is also tied to code to follow the cricket. Art isn't limited to an artistic drawing or painting anymore. It's so much more than that now.
building that machine is not even that expensive, he took at rep 3d printer model and adapted it to be a cnc machine with a pen on the end. Then edit the software to print only one layer and usd processing (wich is a free java framework) to do the math/movement sensor and send it to the printer. It is really easy if you really wanna do it
he hasn't done anything tho, the machine is an old concept, and the program he uses is actually made to be used that way (processing is a java framework design to be used by artists) he hasn't thought of anything ,the machine take images from the internet and draw them, or follow an insect desperate to get out of a prision and draws the path.
all of us, the plotting machine schematics are online so you can build the machine, and the programs he uses are very simple to learn, arduino and processing (both free as well)
You do realize that when trying to make a point of being intellectual you might want to recheck that "sentence" you wrote down. Saying that Warhol was lazy seems a very personal opinion and has in my opinion little to do with the artist featuring in this movie.
This is impressive and clever but there is a total lack of empathy for the insect. The cricket is not a collaborator, it is trapped and trying to escape. Look at the drawing again, see the desperate lines.
mafiamitzy .. "kid" !? Lets compaire age intellect and experience , art included, & well see who the "kid" is and YES Warhol was lazy comparaid to most artist do your research "KID"
Warhol was lazy.. this gentleman is opposite . I take it you didnt understand ANY of the 6+ mins of him explaining his work . A lil' diff than adobe and or windows paint
Building a machine that had already all the schematics on the internet and then using a already done framework to do the "math" for you it is actually lazyness.
cool, but sort of takes the life out of the drawing knowing that it was done mechanically. The human error is a big part of the piece that helps other humans relate to it.
I don't know if I should be impressed by the way he makes it work or find it depressing that he did all of this just because he couldn't be bothered to practice actual drawing with his own hands...
haha ..yeah i think this "artists" romanticizes the very everyday activity that we have at printing stores....u print an ad or a blanket paper with a intention and out comes a blank paper which you call it art. because you printed it with intention of nothingness
As an electronics engineer student who is fascinated by art, this is very impressive and inspiring. Thank you.
Wow. He is an artist, scientist, engineer, coder.
as a jaded NYC designer, its tough for me to respect modern artists. But this guy is seriously fucking awesome. The fact that he not only uses his machines for his art, the fact that he continues to create new ideas and never stay content with 1 module or concept is extremely impressive
This is a whole-brain work and it is fascinating. His process makes it art. Well done!
Brilliant, why so many negative comments though people? He is expressing creativity using HIS unique tallents!
"This is impressive and clever but there is a total lack of empathy for the insect. The cricket is not a collaborator, it is trapped and trying to escape. Look at the drawing again, see the desperate lines"

Genius, Tensai, i can't wait to see more and think more on your contemporary philosophical concepts
what artist is the theme music? specifically the very last song?

This is a little off topic but... can anyone tell me what the song that comes on at 1:42 is?
He's a programmer with a lesbian pop star's hair-do.
He's good at math & has access to capital, that is the point.
building that machine is not even that expensive, he took at rep 3d printer model and adapted it to be a cnc machine with a pen on the end. Can we buy the machine?
The theories behind the art seem so arbitrary, so made up. Like the ideas come after the art. Shouldn't it be the other way around?
he created a cool algorithm that could do cool drawings, then he called it art
Blessed are the artists for they shall inherit the future.
Amazing work!!!
Great stuff dude !
Nice use of Processing! Quite amazing art here!
great work,, great creation......
Wait... so he's an artist? He sounds more like a computer programmer or something. Cool stuff, but I give all the credit to the machine.
Awesome stuff!
WHAT WAS THE MUSIC AT THE END!!!!?????
load in a paint pen, different colour paint pens in one piece, they have the ability to layer over.
Another FORM of Genius.
Welcome To The Machine
Is it possible for a cricket to make a bee line ?
(It can be found under Videos--> Art)
Fantastic, non-pretentious and thoughtful
Super creative.
I'm not really impressed by his work but at least he trying to bridge the gap between art and technology
Hi from Germany - My Music-Robot and I , like this Art Work - nice day to you Robot : )
Amazing concept.
-F151
that's pretty cool
CALLING THIS ART... IS LIKE CALLING RAP MUSIC
so he just made a plotter..........
He is a technological artist, and the machine is a fine artist sans sentience - stop arguing over it. The term 'artist' is very broad.
he hasn't done anything tho, the machine is an old concept, and the program he uses is actually made to be used that way (processing is a java framework design to be used by artists) he hasn't thought of anything ,the machine take images from the internet and draw them, or follow an insect desperate to get out of a prision and draws the path.
Art = more important than you consciously give it credit for being. Arte es mas importante.
bravo harvey!
very, very good
This kids a genius.
at some point in human history the paint brush and canvas were high technology.
Art, for science!
this is the future of tattooing, think about it
Dude. Right on.
MitchTenderness .. ok ok Mitch , your right. Nothing wrong with Windows Paint ;)
The bus thing!!
should make it do genuine pencil prints
lol yeah... lets give credit to the machine..... cuz it can totally program itself......
El artista del futuro
amazing
Wow bugs can be artist now.
such as?
Nice work. But im not sure about drawing machines.
Cool ....but how many of us could do that if we had the time...?
all of us, the plotting machine schematics are online so you can build the machine, and the programs he uses are very simple to learn, arduino and processing (both free as well)
great!!!
This kid is too damn intelligent.
not necessarily an applicable creation....it however takes a brilliant mind to create such a thing...good shit will come from this guy...already has.
the machine itself it's not new, he just did an artistry makeup on it
My slice is vice.
If u can't understand, we don't care :3
Why don't you just use printer?
Trippy.
You do realize that when trying to make a point of being intellectual you might want to recheck that "sentence" you wrote down. Saying that Warhol was lazy seems a very personal opinion and has in my opinion little to do with the artist featuring in this movie.
Pardon you, Windows Paint is my preferred medium.
"Laziness"? ...........Wow
really fucking cool
ya that shits artistic
genius!
it's so IDM
This is impressive and clever but there is a total lack of empathy for the insect. The cricket is not a collaborator, it is trapped and trying to escape. Look at the drawing again, see the desperate lines.
mafiamitzy .. "kid" !? Lets compaire age intellect and experience , art included, & well see who the "kid" is and YES Warhol was lazy comparaid to most artist do your research "KID"
sorry I meant to say "I find this..."
Warhol was lazy.. this gentleman is opposite . I take it you didnt understand ANY of the 6+ mins of him explaining his work . A lil' diff than adobe and or windows paint

very cool, lets do a worm...
Young buck!
He's cute.
This is not art he have not created anything. That I would call art on paper
A printer can draw the best picture
!!!!!!!!
Mmmm... I'd like to his REAL art works.. cause last i checked laziness as an art form has been done already.
ok nice try, you win good for you
This guy does not looks like science! :O
He wasn't meant to be an artist.
Ths is art, but it's a kind of young art. It's a baby.
this machine has existed for more than my whole existence, it's basicly a cnc machine with a pencil on the end
cool, but sort of takes the life out of the drawing knowing that it was done mechanically. The human error is a big part of the piece that helps other humans relate to it.
Ir's not actually drawing... It is print making.
This guy never heard of a printer?
this is called "ploter" ad is older than desktop printers
WHATS THE POINT? YOU DIDNT DRAW IT
I don't know if I should be impressed by the way he makes it work or find it depressing that he did all of this just because he couldn't be bothered to practice actual drawing with his own hands...
haha ..yeah i think this "artists" romanticizes the very everyday activity that we have at printing stores....u print an ad or a blanket paper with a intention and out comes a blank paper which you call it art. because you printed it with intention of nothingness
Cool. Not awesome.For me.
U r not creative.
Excellent work!
