It has been more than eight decades since Batman first donned his mask and cape to take our breaths away. But even after all these years, it is difficult to say which non-print work really defines him, his charisma and charm. Well, the only piece of work that comes any closer to doing so and the one which really shaped his character and made him the hero that Gotham needs but doesn’t deserve has to be Batman The Animated Series. Before you blatantly defy that statement, let us consider the shows and movies that came prior to Batman The Animated Series. While some were plagued with absurdity to the point that it became difficult to see them as anything more than satire, others were infected with an overabundance of villains and sub-plots. Adam West and Micheal Keaton’s Batmen were excellent in their own right, but there were several other issues surrounding them. Among the more recent movies, Christopher Nolan’s trilogy is something else entirely and successfully elaborates the darkness that surrounds Batman, but you can not deny that it was sourced and inspired from the Animated Series. So, naturally, it was this very show that made Batman cool. But as Marvelous Videos repeats time and again, behind every successful hero, there’s a terrifying villain. In this video, we will explore some of the most underrated villains with tragic backstories. But beware, some of these were specially created for the series and hence, lack a proper backstory. So, get your Batarang, wear your capes, and get into your Batcaves, for this one is going to be a dark night full of Batman’s most lethal villains.

Awesome video, thanks MV!! Please make a video on all the Batman Movies, ranked from best to Worst or vice versa!!
Baby Doll, Mr Scarface and the invisible man were probably my favorite dark backstory characters in the series, also the villain from the underdwellers and the guy kidnapped the Homeless. Batman the animated series was and is pure gold. Glad to have seen them when they 1st aired
So true one of the only animated shows my family watched together when first aired can’t remember if it aired after the Simpsons or in living color.
@@Imozart0341I it usually came on at 5pm where I live, Simpsons was 7pm and in living color was 8pm if I remember correctly. I know Married with children was on right after Batman. Either way, same, I use to watch those with my family as well.
Fun fact, in the episode of the Invisible Man, the Invisible man's daughter is voiced by Elisabeth Moss the protagonist of the movie The Invisible Man from 2020.
@@gersonribeiro374 holy shit, I didn't know that! funny thing is that the 2020 version of the Invisible Man actually reminded me of that episode. that is a cool fact dude.
@Erik Lawson i think his name was the Sewer King in that episode. Another good villain from the series was the Mad Bomber from the episode "beware the Gray Ghost"
Baby Doll and her backstory broke my heart. She was one of my favorite original villains from "Batman:. TAS". The moment when Batman gently places his hand on a sobbing Baby's head at the end of the episode shows the human heart inside the grim vigilante.
More tragic then her backstory is how little she is used in the DC universe. Outside of this series, she hasn't made any appearance worth mention.
@@chrisneustaedter6788 Here, here!
The great thing about BTAS was that, under every villain, there was a back story besides "They're just a villain"
Sometimes, you wanted Batman to catch them not to punish them but to help them
And the Precursor to the proliferation of Anime Villains with Traguc Backstories that make them damaged people.
"The Day of the Samurai" was always one of my favorite episodes as a little kid. I was actually scared for Batman when Kyodai landed the death touch technique.
Didnt it make batman shit his pants or something?
Batman has been with us since the 1930's so its a little overstated to say the animated series made Batman popular only that he became more popular
Well I'm sure they know that... But it was the most successful run of the series
I think they mean this show opened the world beyond the generic comic trope of Good vs Evil
@@flashstudiosguy i think it wrapped up the silver age if comics or started the one after silver age. Not sure what its called
Batman the Animated Series is probably one of the greatest cartoons of the 90s and also the X-Men what a phenomenal cartoon Batman the Animated Series was.
Agreed but I have to put Swat Cats on the list too
Add Spider-Man to that list.
@@coldbloodedreality9636 i saw a video today talking about how spiders man animated series crossed over with the X-Men cartoon and never realized as a kid how epic that was. Also crossover with dr.strange, iron man, F4
@@pugking1233 thundercats?
@@maddogkilla1 personally not a fan
The Mad Hatter was awesomely voiced by Roddy McDowall who also played a villain in the 60s Batman tv series called Bookworm.
He also played the amazing Peter Vincent in Fright Night, and was the voice of Samwise in the animated Rankin and Bass Return of the King movie.
@@Goldenbane ah yes mad hatter the one villain who used mind control smartly.
He used it to make them jump off bridge.
He essentially attempted to make them off themselves.
Not too many villains have tried that.
@@Goldenbane then you must remember the remake with Colin Farrell and the late Anton Yelchin
Episodes with Mary Dohl scared the shit out of me way back then. I was around twelve when i watched them for the first time. Also made me realize how dark and grim Batman TAS was and still is. Even this short summary of her story mad me sad for her. She was an adult woman trapped in child's body and mind. When she understood that it broke her. I'm seriously trying not to cry now remembering this story. There were only few more story lines that moved me like this one.
It's like she's a more sympathetic version of Esther from *Orphan*
More tragic then her backstory is how little she is used in the DC universe. Outside of this series, she hasn't made any appearance worth mention.
The use of certain voice actors was brilliantly done in the show, with one example being Alan Rachins for the Clock King. Alan played a character named Brackman in the show LA Law who was very anal about details - he fits perfectly as a Batman villain (loved how he was brought back for the Suicide Squad episode of Justice League Unlimited).
He actually looks like the character. Also what about George Dzundza's (Basic Instinct and Law and Order) role as Ventriloquist? He actually is able to put both Arnold and Scarface perfectly.
All these guys are so underrated. Wished DC used these more commonly.
They forgot one of my favorites Lockup a Arkham Guard who was a expert in security system and was physical and psychological torturing the patients afterwards became convinced that the problems with Gotham were caused by a number of prominent people
And thus the storyline for Dark Knight Rises and Telltale Batman S1 was born.
Although, to me, Thomas and Martha Wayne will always be good parents who met an unfortunate end, all because of a itchy trigger finger and a few hasty moves
@@flashstudiosguy uhhh why post that here?
@@Kpimpmaster because I can, lol
@@flashstudiosguy bu…bu I say
Awesome list! Batman: TAS is still one of my favorite shows! I really liked the "See no evil" episode. Fun fact, the actress who did the voice of Kimmy Ventrix is Elizabeth Moss, who went on to star in the 2020 Invisible Man movie.
And the invisible man in the episode is voiced by Michael Gross, who horror fans know as Burt Gummer from the *Tremors* franchise
They just don't make villains like them anymore. I greatly enjoyed this video.
HARDAC episode was amazing. Not only taking AI to the extreme, but even to emotions themselves. And at the end, the villain shows remorse. Script writing far above a cartoon.
You just wait til H.A.R.D.A.C appears on the 6th season of Teen Titans, when the Terminator is sent back in time to put an end to H.A.R.D.A.C for good with a little help from the Teen Titans
Does firefly count as underrated? I kinda find it interesting how maniacal a fire effects technician can be
oh yeah he was a pretty good villion too!
I only know him from when I beat his ass in a couple of the batman games
Firefly's VA (in The New Batman Adventures) Mark Rolston later voiced Lex Luthor in **Young Justice**
I think you oopsed on the editing, you go from #1 Red Claw to #3 Kyoudiken, with the briefest flash of a scene of Scar-Face.
I noticed that, too!!!
I thought only I noticed this
What happened to #2?
We can't forget that Harley Quinn debuted in this show. One of the best characters in DC comics
True. But lately the character has been over exposed. 2 suicide squads (she didn't need to be in 2nd film) birds of prey. She's the featured character for DC
The title clearly says underrated characters
@@simeondavidjones mainly because she a female, popular female at that. In a world where everybody favorites are Bats, Supes, Flash, GL, they’re most definitely gonna feed in a female character since Wonder Woman was standing tall alone. Plus Margot Robbie is a hot commodity cash grab in the film industry.
@@lilgloman138 and she wasn't hot engh 2 save birds of prey
that Baby Doll episode messed me up as a kid. the episode was GREAT and amazing overall. Def one of my top 5s. also, thats how i found out why people cry when they watch movies and such.
Maxie wasn't a problem, because he "realized" that Arkham was actually Mt Olympias and never wanted to leave since his "fellow gods" were all there as well.
Part of me didn't even think he was nuts and that he was just a corrupt Gotham Businessman trying to weasel out of a prosecution by pretending to be gaga
When you think that its almost 30 years since this show debuted, and still people find new topics to talk about it.a testament of how a great show it is and a huge part of my chilhood.🦇
Batman animated series villain came first - everything rendition after isn't canon (faithful to original content), but the artist's unique portrayal of the character to provide nostalgia to older audience viewers to boost ratings and viewer count.
What happened to Number 2? It went straight from 1. Red Claw to 3. Kyodai Ken.
this channel, and the videos they publish, are usually poorly organized like this.
Killer croc is sympathetic his issue started with kid bullying heck I got picked on for my acne issues and it made me hesitant on talking to people but I grew out of it when I left the middle school
Clock King had a vendetta against the mayor because he made him miss a court date I forget what he needed to go to court for I will have to rewatch that episode.
I think his business was being sued and since he was late the judge found in favor of the other party and he lost his company.
@@LibraGamesUnlimited More specifically, it was pre-mayor Hill who told him he should relax and quite being so uptight. Which he tried and everything went horribly wrong. He later found out that Hill was part of the prosecuting attorny's team and assumed it was deliberate sabotage to ruin his case and destroy his company.
@@ZanathKariashi Yeah. It was amusing when he showed up on Task Force X in "Justice League". Of course, he planned their operation and had it timed down to the second.
Some of these villains, are actually returned in the comic book adaptation of the animated series (that has stories that eventually never ended in the show). Maxie Zeus in fact, returns in a story called ''Super Friends'', in which he tries to destroy the whole Gotham while allying himself with... Lex Luthor (who plans to backstabbing him in the end, of course), and Batman stops him with the help of... Superman!!! Kyonde Ken's death is also confirmed by his own sister in a story from the comics (although it's not entirely sure if she's right).
Awesome video! Can you please do one on The Pirates Of Dark Water? That show was amazing and underrated.
I’m still sad it was never completed.
NOY-G-TOT! And Tim Curry worked on that series, too. Look up PETER PAN AND THE PIRATES, great FOX animated series from 1990 that had Tim Curry win an EMMY for his portrayal of Captain James Hook!
The Mad Hatter is a wonderful character, very creepy and criminally underused.
I just bought the complete collection on blue Ray and rewatch the series currently after work. Still a brilliant display of the Batman universe.
I lost my shit as a kid when Zeus called Batman Lord Hades. I didn’t know what this crazy bastard was talking about but I knew that guy was an idiot and is still a favorite. Also Kyodai Ken, loved that guy!
Fun fact about the Mad as a Hatter saying. Hatters used to use mercury in the process of making hats. The fumes of which would cause severe mental instability and psychosis. Hence Mad as a Hatter.
Why is there no number 2, It goes 1 Red Claw 3. KyodiKen.
Maybe because RC was so long, she took number 2 as well?
Fun fact: "Orphan" is based on a true story.
What episode is that?
@@Cerdo_asqueroso The one with the adult actress who looks like a child.
I've always wondered Does Batman pay for the things he breaks when he's fighting the villains?
No, usually it's the city or Bruce Wayne that does
Honestly one of the villains I really hated was Sewer King. The show literally had him hitting kids for being disobedient and it made me feel so uncomfortable watching that. It also felt more realistic than a lot of other Batman villains.
sigh, the days of getting up early on saturday morning, in order to video tape these episodes and rewatch them at my hearts content, no worries or cares about social or political messes, diseases, money, just the careful act of enjoying my escape from reality into Gotham.
This was a great animated series. Batman and the X-Men I watch those so much when I was a kid
I feel bad for mr. Freeze. All his efforts are for getting money to complete the research to cure his wife, but not once did mr. Freeze go to Bruce Wayne and ask for the money to help in the cure for his wife or ask Batman for help himself. So he's essentially being punished for trying to save his wife. Now That's What I Call tragic backstory of a villain.
Same here, since I have great sympathy for the big guy, I might plan on a storyline in which Nora finally does get cured, leading to Victor Fries making up for his past sins by becoming an ally of Batman's in his war on crime
@@damianprock1650 I like the idea.
@@domomitsune5920 glad to hear it
22:27 "I'm here to clean your clock fuegit" I had to re listen... thought batman was out there using slurs🤣
By far this is the best Batman series of all time!
🤔 Just started watching this so was that a typo or is Selina Kyle|Catwoman #2 because this just went from 3:39 1. The Red Claw to 7:30 3. Keyodai Ken?
Yeah because Red Claw has potential along with Ventrix and HARDAC
Yeah I noticed that too
Yeah they forgot about number two
Exactly
Think you forgot number 2. Was it gonna be the Ventriloquist? Cuz I liked the Ventriloquist. He was one of my favorites.
I should like to make two points. First, I completely agree that Baby Dahl was an incredibly tragic character. Of all of Batman's villains in the Animated Series I found hers to be the most sympathetic and horrific. What she does is monstrous, but you can understand the chain of events and environment that caused her mind to break.
My second point has to do with Clock King. I found that one point about the character totally broke my immersion. In one instance Batman throws a kick which Clock King easily avoids stating that it takes something like 35 hundredths of a second for Batman to kick. This implies that because Clock King has this information it somehow allows him to avoid the blow. Clock King may know how long it would take for Batman to perform the attack. He may even recognize the tell Batman's body makes when he is about to perform it. None of this, however, would give a middle-aged (at best) man who has no particular formal training or physical physique from actually getting out of the way. He would simply have that 35 hundredths of a second to realize he's about to get kicked.
You just wait til these two join forces
H.A.R.D.A.C. is the best villain on this list. Even after all this time, it is the one I would love to see more media about.
You just wait til he meets the Terminator
Batbot was my personal favorite episode, even with the "what is.. love" level cliche for an ending. Hardac was cool the first time but the Batbot ep was just awesome. His horror at the wires in his chest! Oof.
I wish you do a list of Batman's more sympathetic villains from the show like Mr freeze and Two-Face.
And Penquin (Loss of status, as I believe his family lost their fortune) and even Joker (If we declare his Killing Joke origin to be the official one).
Heeey, maybe even Joe Chill, the guy who started it all! Guy simply tries to do a simple mugging and ends up doing time for the the murders of two of Gotham's elite
A cartoon that inspires an entire generation of kids and adults to become comic book fans.
1.you just wait til she joins Dr Claw's forces
2.what happened there?
3.after what happened at the volcano, it's highly doubtful he'll return
4.next time you see him, he'll start a group of villains called the Gang from Wonderland
5.once he joins forces with Catman, he'll certainly make short work of Petropolis
6.you just wait til the 6th season of Teen Titans, when this oversized supercomputer becomes the ultimate reason for a T-800 terminator to be sent back in time
7.I'm not sure about this one unless he somehow survived his fall off the bell tower
8.once he joins forces with Baby Doll and Overload, we'll be looking at something that could spell doom for the Crystal Gems' hometown
9.you might get to see a bit more of her older self once she joins forces with the Clock King
10.you just wait til Kraven the Hunter targets this guy and She-Bat
11.when it comes to the mass breakout in Gotham City, he'll be one of the few inmates killed in the frenzy
12.when it comes to the 6th season of Teen Titans, he'll be shown as Terra's foster father
Think there was an editting error at 7:20 and number 2 was skipped?
Same and I really and it was the Scarface and the ventriloquist they were pretty good.
@@SellavinAtoms exactly, you just wait til they join forces with the Puppet King, Mojo Jojo, Fuzzy Lumpkins, Him, and Princess Morbucks
Honestly, I wished Thorne and Two-Face were more prominent in the series
Both are significantly more interesting as they're literal reflections of how Batman could have easily gone down both routes
Thorne being the source of all crime and corruption in Gotham, Dent being a deranged perversion of the law
You just wait til Rupert Thorne's shown as Terra's foster father when it comes to the 6th season of Teen Titans
Yeah they could have used Red Claw, Ventrix and HARDAC more often
They were pretty good made up villions for the show. of course HARDAC was in the comics.
@@mkproductions2.042 wait are sure about that?
Exactly
Cat-Woman is my favorite DC anit-hero/Hero (she keeps switching between those two but never goes full villain due to being a robin-hood type thief only stealing to support big cat preservation ... come to think of it she is a Better eco warrior then Poison Ivy ever was lol ) She is also distinctive in that she eventually learns Batman's secret identity and keeps it secret(only other Gotham based villain to do this i'm aware of is Joker in the comics ) . they also tend to work together more then against each other which is an interesting dynamic then there is the fact she is an on again off again love interest for Bruce and likely one of his best Gothamite allies outside of Gordon, Fox or the Bat clan...
Lol, yea we know who cat woman is haha. But Bane figured out batmans identity as well as hugo strange and handful of others. I dont like cat woman tho because of the halle berry movie but mostly because she left batman at the wedding altar 😭
12:47 Mad Hatter, to Alice, “Good evening Miss Pleasance”
12:53 Marvelous Videos, Alice’s last name in the show is never revealed.”
Looks at IMDb and sees Kimmy Robertson is credited with voicing Alice Pleasance.
this show was in a total league of its own back in day i remember being totally over awed by it , it was probably the 1st cartoon that could be enjoyed by adults just as much if no more than children
Manbat vs Manspider, that would be a true crossover
Batman had Man-Bat
Spider-Man had Lizard
Both villains are genius geneticists and mutate into human animal hybrids
I love the BATMAN Animated Series!!
Other than maybe Spider-Man, Batman has one of the most interesting & unique rogues gallery of villains.
We discussed the real world implications of some of them in a panel a few years ago :)

Baby Doll was a bit silly in the beginning, but the ending got me in the feels. I admit it.

Kiruna Stamell should play Mary Louise Dahl in a live action Batman movie
How about the girl playing Esther in *Orphan:First Kill?*
Honestly with Batman villains in general, no matter how silly they may look they are more tragic then anything
Literally my favorite tv show of all time. More character development and Better writing in a 22 minute, 30 year old cartoon than in most movies and shows these days. Plus it's Batman 😁
BTAS is my favourite DC animated series EVER!
Maxie Zeus:I'M ZEUUUUS!
Wonder Woman:.....no you are not
Kevin Connery rip he was the best Batman voice of all time and his legendary Legacy will stay for all time
The people who grew up in the 90s like me lucked out with such amazing artistic content to consume and form our likes around
Kyodiken was a boss and needs to be brought into Batman comics and possibly even into the movies.
Are we sure Randa was killed by HARDAC? I always assumed that since she wasn’t kept in the tank with the other prisoners, and also how she seems more independent and human than the other machines that maybe she was completely designed rather than copied
Agreed.
Sort of like the T-800 from the *Terminator* movies
Wouldn't her name be Alice Pleasence? As Mad Hatter says Good evening Miss Pleasence?
Right as you said her last name is not revealed 😶
Mad Hatter is a favorite member of the Rogue's Gallery for me. Might be my fascination of all things Alice in Wonderland. I have stated before that I have an....interesting taste in men, fictional or otherwise. 😈😈
Oh, and as a sidenote, I have seen in other wonderland material, that Alice's last name is Liddell. Also. I feel empathy for Baby Doll.
What happened to Number 2? The video ended up skipping that part of the video and went to Number 3. :/

I don't know if YT suggested your channel, I believe I find after searching something, anyways I'm glad to find it! Congrats because it's top tier content!
Am I the only one that has a video where #2, I guess Scarface and the Ventriloquist, seems to be missing?
I miss Batman.
Who would complain about Batman the animated series there was so much to that show
I never realized that they goofed with two face. In the hospital his hands are the same but later that same episode his arm matches his face.
_Thank you, Mr. Bill Finger….. May u R.I. Paradise. Ur character lives on!_ 🙏🏾💯❤️
Vertigo...to dark for the League of Shadows? I didn't think that was possible!
I love the episode with Kyoto Ken, it shows how well trained Bruce Wayne is. Batman animates series is the essence of Batman that i compare all the live action and animated iterations to.
One of my favorite episodes was “Moon of the Wolf”.
Honestly, Batman Beyond could’ve done a lot with HARDARC, but instead opt for their own original take on the return of an Artificial intelligence from the past.
Maxie Zeus actually makes an appearance in the Harley Quinn animated series.
I don't remember that Batman the animated series episode; but did Wonder Woman make a cameo?
I DARE YOU to BLATENLY DEFY that statement!

The clock king time out of joint episode! Now thats my childhood all day! Thank you!!!!!!
Shame it was only those two episodes, a lot more could have been done, especially with him having the power to manipulate time
The first episode is On leather wings not the cat and the claw.
It's too bad that some of the Batman's rogue gallery, such as King Tut and Egghead, didn't include the ones in the Live Action series in the 60s. But at least some where translated, such as Mr. Freeze, Joker, Catwoman, Riddler, and Penguin.
Yeah, it would be worth my while if King Tut had that specially designed vehicle of his along with that staff of his that makes his victims suffer a fate worse than death and of course, Egghead could probably do with something extra to his eggs
We heard that you like ads. So we put ads before the ads so you can’t go two minutes without ads because you love ads.
A younger Patrick Stewart would have been the perfect live-action Clock King... 😏😌
Yep
Loved the scarecrow in this show.
Bane was only recently appeared in the comic, in a story like the appearance in the movie where he breaks Batmans back, and Rene Montoya was created for the series and carried into the comic as a popular character
He also broke Batman's back when he first appeared in the comics in the 90s.
@@LibraGamesUnlimited Thats the correct story alright
@@johnryder1713 I always thought it was funny because around the time they first introduced Bane in the comics Mad TV had a Mexican Wrestler character named El Asso Wippo who was always talking about breaking people's back over his knee. "Baby Doll" story is so sad to me :(
The Batman animated series was probably most favorite or top ten shows I watched as a kid growing up, hell maybe even today. It had compelling stories between all the characters. Also the first time we heard Mark Hamill play the Joker’s voice for many years.
I love the way the British pronunciation sounds like "Botmon"
