    This was very helpful Harry. I'm looking for reviews on the Faber-Castell pastel pencils too, hopefully you have a review coming soon. I think I'll buy these too since they seem really good. 🤓

    Fun to see you reviewing these! I got a tin of 24 and mine are at least 20 years old (i got them from my mum on my birthday once) i see they did change the barrel color a bit and on mine where you have a silver strip at the end mine have pink-ish strip, so i actually find that interesting :) Great review once again and i agree they are very good pastel pencils (apart from some colors of mine that are kinda hard and scratchy and don't seem to give of as much pigment as the softer colors do, but i don't know maybe they have changed that aswell over time)

      I know that Derwent's pastel pencils used to be hard a scratchy, mind you that is according to articles I researched from a while back so I cant say for certain, but I do know that Derwent changed the format of their pastel pencils a while back and so I think some people still have the slightly older pastels. These pastels I have been reviewing are only a few months old give or take, actually about 6 or 7 months old, but I am almost certain they are the newer ingredients. Thanks for you wonderful feedback as always Jen and your support, always appreciated.

    Great video Harry! 😆 I have the 72 derwent & 60 Stabilo Carbothello pastel pencils. I like them both. The derwent are not scratchy & are soft...I'm guilty of using my derwent super point manual sharpener too. 😉 I did find the the Carbothello was a bit brighter than the derwents & what is so nice is that they work great together. Between the 2 full sets you get just enough difference in color that I don't feel I have doubles. I use mine over the pan pastels. I do get a bit frustrated with derwent at times because of course the colors I like tend to be a lower lightfast rating. I realize that's because of the pigments they choose to use in the products. I'm sure if you looked across all of the lightfast charts for derwent you would find the same color & same rating no matter the product (though the graphitints & ink tense may vary). From what I have found the Stabilo Carbothello are all lightfast though I'm not 100% sure on that...it sucks they only have 60 colors. I want all of the colors of the world! lol 😂 Anyways Harry if your getting in to pastels to I would suggest getting the Carbothello as well to round off with...they are a great addition with the derwent. I was going to mention a rubber "color shaper" to you but then you popped it up on screen. lol I think those are the best way to blend pastels for me. I hope you are doing well my friend! 🤗
    Sadly, things have gotten really tough around here. We found out yesterday after a rush to the vet that "Princess" Sasha (our husky) apparently blew a disc at the hip level & has extreme nerve damage and swelling. She first showed signs Wednesday night after a high level freak out Tuesday afternoon during a loud thunderstorm. She tried to tear down a very secured doggie gate & go under the part she got loose. She can't put any really pressure on her back legs though they do show reflexes. When she tries to walk, her whole back ends falls over and she falls to the ground. Hubby is having to carry her out to potty and food & water is brought to her. Mom here being the big meanie she is, is the only one who can get her 7 pills down her every 12 hours (in a loving way). They are trying to get the swelling down to tell more. We are hoping to start her on acupuncture next week as both of our vets have been very successful with it. Sasha was there when hubby came back from Iraq the 3rd time in 2006 and welcomed him home 2 more times...she is his baby. Unfortunately, she was born with a very rare condition where her urethra has a hole and is connected to her colon, which means she leaks urine constantly. Vets in Germany said she would die from kidney failure within 5 years...she's still with us at 11 years old. Anyway, sorry to be a bummer. It's hard when you have to consider what is the best quality of life for your fur baby, especially if the final act of love is sending them over the Rainbow Bridge. Fingers & toes crossed that the treatments work and the rainbow bridge can wait a while longer.

    Hi Harry Yep I am one of those that cannot stand the feel the dust does not bother me even though I have lung problems I wear a mask for any thing like that. No what get me is when you put the pastel pencil on the paper and draw the feeling that goes up my arm spreads to the whole of my body right into my teeth its like my teeth has grown hair Ugh and I then shiver as the feeling goes down my spine into my toes which my toes curl upwards. I have been trying to get over the feeling lol

    I recently bought a new Derwent pastel pencil set and got to compare it to a rather ancient and barely used one I already had. All of the pencils in the new set are scratchy and to my surprise some of the pencils in the old one are really smooth.
    Besides changing something in the composition of the pencils, Derwent has obviously changed all of the colours, because the alphanumerical codes are different and some of the pencils with matching names don't quite match in their colours. There are also few hues in the old set that are no longer in the new one and because of it I have a problem, that what if I like a colour in the old set and need to find more of it. Which made me search ebay for old Derwent pastel pencil sets 😄

      A good friend of mine here on UA-cam bought me a really old set of Derwent Artist pencils and compared to the Derwent Artist pencils of today, the old ones are really soft and pigmented whereas the new ones are hard cores and light pigment.
      But I think the reason why this is the case is health and safety. Back in the day a lot of products could be placed in the ingredients that aren’t allowed today because of all the regulations.

    You might want to try sanded paper, like a 600 - 800 grit. I like Canson Mi Tiente Touch because it comes in colors. This will keep the pastels on the paper better than regular pastel papers, although it erases better by using a dry brush and working over the mistake instead of using an eraser or even a chamois. This means that you might not need to use as much fixative. If you haven't tried them, I suggest you try working large and using a really soft set of pastels, like Rembrandts. It's best to start with the harder ones and then work with softer ones on top. The pastel pencils are great for putting in details on a larger drawing.
    PS - You are right about the pigments affecting the hardness. I've always had difficulty finding a nice soft Alizarin Crimson and Cadmium Red.

    Loved the vid, thanks! :) DIY paper idea? Use coloured paper 'dividers' (cheap packs), the ones used to divide subjects in folders, or 'Manila folders/files. They are thicker than basic drawing-sketch paper & some great colour hues. To get the tooth, either lightly sand them or paint over surface with clear gesso? Could that be cheaper alternative for 'practice' pastel paper? even if can't afford gesso (if that idea works, there are easy DIY recipes eg. basic using glue & baby talc powder (or make own colours with gesso-add acrylic paint or dye. Other more complex recipes too. not for pro work of course. Any thoughts?

    I have a question. I recently got into adult coloring books, and I'm a bit frustrated with how slow colored pencils are. Would it be possible to use these pencils in coloring books?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  6 років тому +1

      Michaël Claveau I don't think so because Pastels need quite a bit of tooth on the paper for the Pastel to grip and hold onto. I mean colored pencils is generally a slow medium however, what type of pencils are you using? If you are using a hard core pencil you will find the Color build up quite slow, however with a softer core you can get quite a fast coverage of bright and vivid pigment. A pencil such as Derwent Coloursoft, Marco Renoir, Prismacolor etc. Wax based pencils tend to be this way. I hope this has helped

    Have the 36 box of 25 years ago and use the very seldom because nearly all ended sooooo small .Impossible to use a craft knife or the Derwent pastel eraser.No more Derwent pastels for me

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  6 років тому

      apollonia I know that they have changed the ingredients in their pastels about 5 years ago now or less so the pastels you have from 25 years ago will be much harder and less pigmented than the Pastel pencils they sell now. However I fully understand that when you purchase a product that you don't like or do nice work with it puts you off that product no matter what has changed. Thanks for the feed back and stopping by the channel.
