GUYS MY (mom's) DOG FINALLY LET ME PET HER (they got her long before i was born, so i don't think she counts as mine)
So, she never really liked me (not like, she saw me and attacked, she just wouldn't accept pets from me) (and i also tried 4 times and only 1 was successful, and i pulled back as soon as i started bcs i still was afraid she would bite me) and today she did!
I'm so freaking happy rn
had to stop bcs she started showing her teeth
I’ve never had an incident with a dog, but I don’t make it a habit to impromptu approach them to pet them, most will approach you and their demeanor makes it obvious they’d like something from you.
I don’t put my face anywhere near a strange dogs face - so I’d never bend down and I recommend an open hand so that they can see you have no food.

My doggy puts her front paws together and moves them rapidly up and down like she is praying very devoutly. I’ve been assuming she is saying, “That’s the spot, keep rubbing my tummy.”
Do you have MORE advice for my fearful shutdown foster dog? He doesn't want anything to do with me. He does have a history of aggression towards men. I haven't had men over to see it yet. I just want him to have a personality & feel joy. He lays around wanting nothing to do with me. He doesn't seem to enjoy being pet or being brushed. He follows me around....always out of reach. He's an Australian Kelpie.
You might try to get a bond with him if you take him to a sheep herding clinic, let him watch and talk to the trainer, and see if they can put him on sheep to bring out instinct and where you can form a strong working bond.
