I thought your demonstration of the flower painting was phenomenal. I love the way you handle the application of your colors. thank you for the experience.
At 4:47 a bright red is put over a very dark and the red stays bright. Which red color has that much opacity? The reds that I use do not stay bright when put on a dark background.
Hello Frank, all my colors at the moment are Old Holland. The red here probably is 'Scheveningen red middle'. Yes it has a great opacity, which is really convenient! But there must not be too much wet paint underneath. Sometimes I take away paint by laying a piece of newspaper on top and softly rubbing that with a finger.
I love the way you treat the rose like a solid ball of clay to get the shape, with it's lights, mediums and darks, and THEN make a few slices to show the individual petals. This opened a door in my thinking about shapes. Thank you.
Mesmerizing to watch! I love how you create such wonderful, subtle, atmospheric effects with the background and move between subject and background with the same care. I also like the grid you use to periodically check your work- Beautiful painting!
THNX! yes, I used the grid to check the symmetry of the vase. I think I didnt paint the exact shape I saw in the subject, but thanks to the grid, it did end up perfectly symmetrical :)
Thnx ! Hm no not really. I do have some movies available, demonstrating my process. (see the blog) But this is not really for beginners. There is a lot of info on youtube, however...
Extremely nice to say only one question: from where the light comes on the red rose subtle tones of red would have bounced on the glass, water, shadow and background. What tones of red did you made?
Thnx ! Hm if I remember correctly, from above, slightly to the right. I did work from life pretty faithfully, at least as well as I can. not sure about the red ....
Another masterwork! How gorgeous should be the feeling of acomplishement! No comparison, I am a hobby painter and 4 of 5 works go to the trash.I am wondering if were possible for you to produce a not so good or bad painting???!!🤗🤗🤗😍
Thnx! Yes, all the time, I produce a lot of test paintings and sketches, that I basically all throw away, or store on a pile. I usually try not to start a painting, until I'm certain that is 'paintable' (ie it works in the paint), by producing a number of tests first.
Hello! Hm yes depends on how many hours you want to spend. My own tutorials contain more or less all the same method, so it doesn't really matter. A good place to learn on youtube is the 'drawmixpaint' channel...
Just curious from a student stance: what do you use the thin, small piece of card for, please? And why do you have the 'bulldog' clip with what looks like putty rubber or 'Blue Tack' inside please? Amazing talent, thanks for sharing.
hello Jan, I used 2 pieces of paper: In the beginning, I indicate the height of the horizontal lines of the table. To make sure they are perfectly horizontal, I copy marks on a piece of paper, and put it in front of the painting on the left and right side, then copy the marks back to the painting. Later, i use a piece of paper with 8 equally spaced lines on it, for measuring distances. Eg in the subject, I line up the first and last line with the top and bottom of the subject, then I can see where the red rose starts, maybe at the second line. I then can copy that measurement to the painting by holding the paper in front of the painting in the same way (indications of top and bottom of the subject must be in place). The clip with kneaded eraser, I just use as a support for the hand, or as ruler to move the brush along. The kneaded eraser provides some friction. On my easel I have a large piece of mdf as a support for the mahlstick/ruler. Good luck!
I will just add this one bit of advice from a painter of rose: remember the reflected light! The red rose will be reflected on the white as will the green leaves.

Incredible work!
It’s mesmerising.. do you give online courses for beginners?

Thanks for showing us your process. How long did this take? Did you have to wait a long time between layers?
thnx ! It took a week or so if I remember correctly. I used a slow medium so it is 1 layer...
How long would it take a person who hasn't painted in over a decade to do this? What should I start with first? Can you recommend any tutorial for me?

Sulime perfection.
The next best thing to painting to Bach is watching someone else paint to Bach!
