Dutch and Flemish Still Life | Copying
How to Paint Rose.
Jan Davids de Hem | Rijksmuseum
How to draw flowers? How to write a still life? What colors to paint flowers?
Today we will be making a copy of the Dutch still life.
This is a painting by an artist named Jan Davids de Hem. His year of birth 1606
Overall size of still life Height: 54.5 cm Width: 36.5 cm
"Still life with flowers in a glass vase"
We will take into work not the whole still life, but a small fragment - a large rose.
And on his example, we will consider the multi-layer painting technique of the old masters.
The size of my canvas is 20x20cm. Fine-grained cotton.
The original is in the Rijksmuseum.
This is an art museum in Amsterdam. Included in the top twenty most visited art museums in the world.

Anton, you have done a great job. Your technique is excellent. I know other pretentious commentators are splitting hairs over categorizations of what constitutes Old Masters' techniques, but it's all meaningless because it's one thing to theorize and another to produce. I challenge any commentators posting trivial or negative comments to place a link here to their oeuvre instead of hiding behind trite jargon.
Thanks for the good comment!!
Third thing next to the second is to have a scientific and academic knowledge about old techniques based on professional research ;)
I agree with you. I have art education. My father is an artist. I have read many studies on the painting techniques of the old masters.
The most important thing is that I like old painting) and it suits my character. It's good that there were people from whom I could learn a lot.
Its probably worth a lot but ill give you $30 for it .
Fyi thats millions in my local currency

That you chose the song Shattered Paths in January..and nice work, I hope you and family are ok. Thoughts are with you..
Thank you! Yes, it's nice music. I myself and the city of Zaporozhye, most of the region has been occupied. I managed to take my wife and children to Poland and then to Germany. While they are there. I stayed in Ukraine. I do various volunteer activities.
@@az.painting Your welcome, I meant nice work refering to your art..but the song is nice too-sad title is timely. I'm painting again after having an injury that stopped me. I'm learning to work small. getting into glazing too. I love that your method seems simple yet choices within seem complicated, but thats mastery too. And-Oh my, please stay safe. Your family is very lucky to have you! Thanks back to you!
Hi! Could you explain how you traced the image onto the canvas?
Yes please. Important part passed by too quickly to figure out!
That looks like a peony to me, and you painted it beautifully! That's the old masters style of painting I am trying to learn. Also, I support Ukraine 🇺🇦 in their fight against Russia.
Thanks for your comment! May your painting studies be successful!
That's actually a pretty good result! But for the next go-around, consider picking a surface with a smoother texture. A surface that's a bit too rough can mess with the whole vibe.
Wow this is so pretty. Looks alot like Renaissance paintings
Thank you!
Amazing work. Congratulations and thanks for sharing your process. It definitely takes a lot of patience and commitment. Lots of inspiration here. My heart goes out to you. I have a good friend who is from Ukraine, her mom is in Peru. She was able to leave the country for safety. I’m glad you were able to take care of your family. May be you could paint a white rose. Painting a white rose has challenges. Blessings, take care and be safe. New subscriber!❤
Beautiful!
Absolument magnifique. Merci beaucoup pour votre vidéo. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Anton you job is beautiful and perfect!😀😀😀😀Thank you for video.
Common misunderstanding. Old masters very rarely painted still lives that way (with full deyailed underspainting). Most common was simpler and thus faster method with simple gwomertical and tonal underpainting. See article on hamilton-kerr institute page, called "reconstructing a 17th century flemish flower painting".
Very beautiful painting, so nice and realistic!!😍😍
Stunning, love the detail !! I love the layering method !Thank you for sharing.❤👍
Thank you!
Fantastic, thank so much for sharing this training!
Very beautifully done. Amazing technique. I love it!
Amazing. Just beautiful 👌👌
thank you!
Amazing, just beautiful. You have done a great job! Anton, You are a great artist! My heart goes out to Ukraine.
Thank you! thanks for the encouraging words.
Beautiful work Anton.
Thank you
Amaizing! I wish they would teach tradition in my art school.
what medium did you use and did you use it each layer and what part did you use per paint, thank you
That flower is 100% the star of the show. I want to do this flower below an owl on a pumpkin with a candle beside it. Im not at this level but that would be gorgeous. Great job. Magnificent actually.
Can someone please go through what he just did???
Sei un genio!!!
Amazing work and very helpful video Thanks
That is superb and so interesting. Thank you !
La perfection existe entre vos mains 😍🙏👏
Merci beaucoup pour vos commentaires !
this is truly incredible !! the amount of patience you must have is unmatched, and pure talent of course ! my heart goes out to Ukraine ❤
Thanks a lot for your comment. very nice!

@@az.painting May the angels and archangels protect you and all of yours!
@@az.painting How can I help you, Anton?
Thanks for your willingness to help me. I am now in a safe place in western Ukraine, living in a small room with no windows on a mattress.) Here at the church they serve food. I try not to spend money. So far, everything is fine with me.;) It’s a pity that I can’t painting yet (. There are no conditions for this, but I hope that the war will end someday. I had to close my studio and leave everything there - tripods, lighting, a computer. I think that someday someday I'll come back and continue painting.

You nailed it

Can this style work with acrylic paint or only oils?
Only oils)
C'est très très beau !
Merci!
Beautiful✨
Amazing ❤
Fabulous
What is the first layer???
The first layer (imprimatura) is "Siena". Or any other brown paint.
@@az.painting i speak English as well. I would be interested in lessons. How can i contact you?
....
laughter of course, but I don’t speak English either.))) I can communicate with the help of text and translate through google translate. My family is in Germany now, they already speak German well, but I'm still in Ukraine, but I'm already learning German at A1. For the next video, I will try to add subtitles and a text explanation.
Beautiful
U have a course
I don't have a course. But I will try to make it.
5ravail d,
Wow
Absolutely beautiful. Stay strong.
Beautiful!!!!
Problem here is this probably took at least 100 hours start to finish and would sell for less than EUR 2,000 which is an hourly rate of Euro 20 . The Old Masters were able to sell these for much much more value compared to todays market.
It took less than 100 hours. But in Ukraine (where I live now) nobody needs it now. Therefore, this picture hangs on the wall and waits for someone to buy it.))
Without the monochromatic " Dead Layer" this is just a color study and should not be confused with serious oil painting. What is the name of the person painting in the video? Who was their teacher?
I'm from Ukraine. My name is Anton Zaruba.
Found the pompous ass. The result is all that matters, looks pretty good to me. "Who was their teacher?" My God.....
While color studies are a part of the process of figuring out oil painting, this is still serious oil painting, the attention to detail here and clear study of old processes shows that. Saying stuff like that is no better than saying illustrators who use oils aren’t painters when they’re, in many cases, better painters than most “painters” here in the west.
@@Deiwert_Shock - Without the monochromatic " Dead Layer" this is just a color study and should not be confused with serious oil painting. Alla prima always means amateur. Are you an oil painter? How do you not know this? Have a blessed day.
@@patrickmcdaniel8123 Alla prima is a direct approach to painting, just another of the wet on wet applications for paint. Also I’m studying old masters methods in painting, and in many cases a direct approach was used. Also yes, I’ve been practicing with oils and learning the medium thoroughly, albeit as an illustrator. Just because alla prima is meant to be done in a single session doesn’t mean that it is not serious painting. And this painting would take much longer than a single session to do.
