  • I thought I'd put together a "Cost-to-Own" for the MK7 Golf R. I've put on just about 70,000 miles on my 2016 Golf R and wanted to run through the pricing for the various maintenances the car has been through. This isn't the most extensive review however I'm hoping you find it useful. I didn't discuss depreciation of the car. Although that is a metric that should be factored into ownership costs, it varies by individual (purchase price for a new / used car, options the vehicle is equipped with, and then mileage of condition of the car when selling). For me, I am the original owners with 13 miles on the odometer at purchase at a cost of $39,790. This car is not equipped with DCC & Nav option and is not a Spectrum Color option. At 69,880 miles the cars market value is ~$18,000-$21,000 trade in or ~$22,000-$24,500 private sale.

      Exactly! Arguably some cars are better than others, and don’t get me wrong this ain’t no Toyota or Honda but this car is well designed and well built. It has some higher end performance parts to it which require their due diligence in maintaining, but that’s all. You but it best: “they last, just take care of the car”. Thanks again for the comment and the views.

      I'm thinking about a 2021 it's supposed to be cheaper and 330hp. I'm just wandering about the reliability of these cars. I'm also torn with a Audi S3 or a Hyundai Voloster N if the Golf R isn't that reliable. I want to use anyone of them for a daily driver

    whats the deal with rotating the tires, i mean i get it but why. im a mechanic in Norway and i have never "rotated tires" for a customer and never heard of anyone asking for it. here people mark their tires with L.F, R.F, L.R R.R so when they come in they want them on the same wheel they have always been on

    • @driven15
      @driven15  4 роки тому

      I also mark my tires, but with the intent of tracking miles on them in order to properly rotate. The front tires do more of the pulling, are biased for braking, and get the brunt of the effort in cornering. So they wear down faster. So either buy a set of 2 and replace the front at a higher frequency than the back or rotate and replace all together. I adhere to the latter, not saying it’s more right or not. Just what I do.

    I own '17 Golf R DSG. I popped my summer tires twice within a year!!! I'm in Toronto and potholes are issue for me. I've got stock summers Contisportcontact 5p. Have you had any issues with tires?

    • @driven15
      @driven15  4 роки тому +1

      Sorry for the late reply, didn’t get a notification for whatever reason. I haven’t had issues with tires thankfully (other than riding a set down to the threads, which is TOTALY self induced by my idiocy). I ran Michelin in the summer and winter. Not necessarily a Michelin man (not pun intended). I like Pirelli on my other car. I will say I’ve had some heart stopping moments in Chicago due to potholes that go to China they’re so deep. Winter weather (Toronto for your, Wisconsin in my end) equal crap roads due to ice expansion.
      Thanks for leaving the comment. Hope you enjoyed the video. Enjoy the driving, LOVE the car and the DSG!

    Do you think it’s safe to have a webasto moonroof installed? That brand has a very good reputation and many manufacturers use them. So far, that’s what’s holding me back from buying one. I can’t understand why the MK7 Golf R had no option to add a moonroof (GTI and regular Golf do) 😣

    • @driven15
      @driven15  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated!!
      SO, the moonroof / sunroof. I never personally looked into it however Webasto seems well reviewed. With that said, getting a well reviewed aftermarket sunroof (after researching install, coverage, maybe others that have done it...etc) I don’t see why it would be an issue on reliability standpoint. My personal concerns would be how it electronically hooks up to the wiring harness (can cause issues? Maybe pop up errors?).
      As to why the Golf R doesn’t have it while the GTI/regular Golf does, I didn’t research that myself for the ACTUAL answer but my thoughts process is it might be lighter w/o as well as potentially more rigid chassis. That’s my assumption, not for sure though. Could also just be as simple as it’s a different mold/manufactured part number and it’s cheaper to not have it as an option on a lower volume production car.
      I’d also maybe look into safety. Will this cause a potential weak point, especially if you plan on tracking the car. All in all, I’d say do the research and if you deem it a good mod, do it! I’ve never missed it myself to be honest.
      Sorry for the LONG reply, again thanks for watching, I appreciate the views / engagement.

    A few questions, how do you feel about the golf R and reliability now. As well, carbon build up seems to be terrible with these from what I heard. I'm also looking into a S3 Audi and a Voloster N not sure how reliable those are also.

    • @driven15
      @driven15  4 роки тому +2

      First off, thanks for watching and commenting :). I want to be thorough with my answer so sorry if it’s a long one.
      Great great question! SO I’ll say stay tuned or I can reply to this comment again because I’m working on a 75,000 mile review of the car. It’s taking a bit of time because I want to make sure I’m thorough and detailed but it will be coming out in first week of August.
      I’m currently at 75,700+ miles and the car has been a peach! The engine and transmission still feel responsive and sharp, and I do NOT baby the car, I have never tracked or modified it, but I drive it hard on the road. I always let the temperature get to 120F (50C) but then I drive the car on the harder side. I accelerate hard, turn right and brake hard too. All good things to say. Also, I’m amazed the original brakes and rotors are still going strong. The pads have >2mm life in them. Might change all soon but for now they are still going strong.
      The cars interior has held up phenomenally well. I pack the car with bikes, camping gear, big food cooler, helmets and we have a dog. Interior still looks brand new. Honestly. Plastics are not scratched, leather not cracked, dry or torn, stitching still holds up. The steering wheel still looks good, less opaque than when new (bit smoother) but still looks clean!
      The paint on the car is my only real complaint. It seems to be “soft”. It scratched or scuffs easily and can chip easily (rocks, door dings..,etc) the body has amazing held up perfectly. I drive the car everyday (75.7K miles in 4 yrs) and in Wisconsin salt in the winter. Body, frame and underbody components are clean.
      I HIGHLY recommend this car.
      For the Audi S3, it’s a great car but honestly it’s an R with Audi luxury and looks. And reliability might be on par but parts might be more expensive (per Audi). I’d say if you like the Audi’s interior and exterior looks more, it’s a comparable car.
      As for the Voloster, I don’t know these cars well enough but they are sporty and their warranty’s are sweet. With that said I believe 2017 onwards VW has 75,000 mile warranties on their vehicles (my 2016 was only 60,000). So maybe you get more peace of mind with the longer warranty, but honestly the Golf still feels tight, no squeaking or rattling or weird vibrations. It feels solid still.
      Thanks again for watching, commenting and reading this novel. Like I said I’m making a detailed 75K mike video for the R :)

      @@driven15 I'll sub and stay tuned. Currently working on making my mind up on a Voloster n 2021 or a used Golf R. The price of the 2021 Golf R might be to much. I'm also a Vermonter so winter's are a killer so this might sway me to the Golf R. Though recently saw videos of Voloster Ns in snow.

    • @driven15
      @driven15  4 роки тому +1

      Love it, thank you!!! I really do hope I can help add value here. So I will say this, as with any car, is like sky diving. I can do it a million times but can’t advise you and promise 100% safety. The car is not necessarily inexpensive and a viewer of the channel did leave an unfortunate comment on his not so happy ownership experience (if I recall I pinned his comment for all to see because I tell my side of the ownership experience but I want viewers to have a clear expectation and full details).
      Again, my perspective: this car in the snow (with snow tires, I use Michelin X-I’ve) is a BEAST. I’ve literally driven around a lifted Chevy Silverado pickup truck that was stuck in the snow. Wisconsin has its worst snow fall of 136 yrs in April 2018, that day I still went out for brunch with the girlfriend, it’s that good. The 4 motions is slick and seamless, you can never tell when it’s just front wheels vs all 4. The car is planted in the snow but can also be playful if you poke it :P. It puts the power down well in the snow, it doesn’t squirm under braking and it has a safe level of understeer if you’re aggressive with the turn in but truly (not a car reviewer professional) the car can be controlled so easily by easing off the steering and feeding in some throttle. I went to the Audi driving experience in Austin Texas back in September of 2019 and can say this car handles better in the snow than the RS3 did on the wet skid pads. It’s very very well balanced. I can’t wait for the winter to come JUST to enjoy the car in the snow!
      Again thanks for watching and more so for the comments, I truly enjoy these conversations the most.

      I’ll be doing the work myself, to the best of my ability. I’m taking on a few “DIYs” with the cars this summer. Changing the Golf’s air filters, spark plugs, and this (carbon buildup / cleaning) as well as changing the oil on the Maserati as well as the transmission fluid. So I’ll do my homework and do it myself and document the whole thing (I think that may be most beneficial to viewers as well). I just need to find an open enough weekend. 100% agreed on stop and go traffic. Luckily I guess I live in an area where 90% of driving is no traffic and I tend to take back country roads when I want to have some fun which are also no stop light and low traffic. I watched your DSG service video and it doesn't look bad, but I ran out of time and ended up just scheduling it. I do love the GTI. Other than scheduled maintenance i think they did the thermostat under warranty. It's the autobahn version and I'm really impressed with the interior - still feels like a new car.
