MK7 Volkswagen Golf R Long Term Review | 75,000 Miles
The aim of this video is to have a comprehensive summary of my experience with the Golf R over the course of 76,280 miles at this point. I’m calling it the 75K review. I intend on covering safety of the car, quality of the components and build quality, I’ll touch on performance and the exciting parts of driving and then talk about everyday livability and my taken the cars reliability. I wanted to dig into what others have said about the car, but I figured I’d rather focus on MY take as I would have more confidence and conviction in telling my unique story
IN TRYING TO be comprehensive, I read my notes here. I want to make cool, seamless entertaining videos, but when we’re talking tech, quality of information, accuracy and thoroughness is the name of the game.
My overall experience has been a very positive one and I would honestly recommend this car to anyone looking for a fun sporty car that can ABSOLUTELY be daily driven!!

Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS 4.7L V8 Engine Oil Change - Thorough yet whimsical

In this video I show how to do an engine oil change on a Gen5 Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS with the 4.7L V8. I go through the tools required, and dive into the detail of the steps to perform the engine oil change and checks. I also highlight some features on the car (good to know data for variator recalls). All in all I tried to be informative yet entertaining, I hope that comes across.

Me taking you along the rollercoaster thought process I'm a prisoner to. I've always wanted the Ferrari 599 GTB but I've always LONGED for this particular Maserati QP Sport GTS. Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS Sunday Drive

The Maserati has been in "winter storage" on a trickle charger since end of October 2019. I typically don't drive the car during Midwestern winters due to the snow / salt on the roads. My 2016 Volkswagen Golf R recently got an AFS Error (Adaptive Front Lighting System). After some quick diagnostics (made another video ua-cam.com/video/PsHAF1j57Fk/v-deo.html ) It turned out to be the left headlight's cornering light (bending light). I recently got an AFS - Adaptive Front lighting System fault. My OBDII Sensor didn't come up with what the exact issue was so I did some diagnostics (as seen in this video) to narrow down on what the issue is and where it is occurring. Thanks for the comment, you’re 100% right. I ironically just did my 120k mile service 3-4 weeks back and did it right this time. Waited for temp to get to 35-40 C, drained to a drip then capped. Been 1,300 miles since service and transmission has been fine but I will say I’ve noticed the shifts are a bit snappier (not bad, but every so slightly less smooth). Probably in my head.

    Dude, good on you for NOT selling this car ever. There are really just a thousand of these according to wikipedia. Probably less now that people have crashed them over the last decade +. These things should shoot up in value once people figure out it's a very low production car, specifically the Sport GT S variation as well as the Ferarri V8. Cars that increase in value just have two things. They are rare and they have a big engine. That is the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS

      Spot on! On all the above, very well made point. Honestly from day 1 when I first saw and got this car back in 2015 I knew this would be a future highly prized vehicle. Actually the first car I ever bought, literally. And now, las car I’ll ever sell. I’ve told my wife this is a dead man’s car. Only will change hands once I’m gone. I’ve wanted a 430 Scud and a Gen1 Gallardo Superlagerra. I’ve had chances to buy each but would have needed to pass on this…didn’t do it. Reading reviews and asking owners about there experience and the majority have had nothing but good things to say. These are most definitely the best kept secret on the market today. I’m getting mine for the price of a used Giulia 4 cylinder. I have had to do way more maintenance on my e39 M5 and those are praised on the second hand market. I would argue the QP sounds better as well. Thanks for the info. I hope to see more Maserati content soon.

Thís is by far not my ¹st Volkswagen, but with the Turbo, most definitely my liveliest VW product : the midrange pick up (80 - 160km/h) is amazing for such a small engine (3 cylinders) ánd it is quiet ánd frugal : I once got 24.86km/L! That is 58 mpg! For a petrol, not even a diesel (diesel engines tend to be more economical). We've even travelled with it to Swakopmund, Namibia (my country of birth) which is 2000km (one way) from where we live. During thát holiday (December 2019) I averaged between 16-19km/L at an average speed of 130km/h (our speed limit is 120km/h.. But hey who cares right.. Hehehe). The highest I got on it was 220km/h (on the speedo). A colleague of mine reached 235km/h - both our cars are stock. Next I wanna try the GTI! (POLO GTI) PS : don't you find the GOLF R to be a little bit noisy - a friend of mine has one and the acceleration is AMAZING! He took it up to 260km/h to show me what the car was like - he said his personal highest in the car was 320km/h! But I found it to be a little bit too noisy for me. Thank you for the video and how you show your commitment towards your masterpiece. In the review of Harry's garage on similar Quattroporte fifth generation we realize that politicians around the world don't allow cars like this to be produced anymore - and it's a loss for the automotive world. This fifth generation Maserati, for me, represents a unique combination of technological skill accompanied by a raffinated sense of aesthetics, id est, something extremely Italian. Some day, sooner or later, driving a similar one of my own. A dream to be realized - and money to be saved for that. By driving with that beauty you do a favour to the others, since this way you show with your example the idea to realize your possible (and sometimes even impossible) dreams. To drive a car which donates you joy and does fill your needs on sonority, aesthetics and so on, all that beyond mere rationality.

      @@driven15 I believe we are in the same region. I'm in northern IL and winters can get rough so the AWD would be a bonus. Now looking at the base 16R more so would upgrade to the 8" MK7.5 screen, and hopefully frameless homelink mirror too from MK7.5 and I'd ne happy, was surprised the R seats felt less bolstering on the sides compared to my 19 GTI.

      I’m surprised by the seats as well! Yes we’re both in the Midwest then :). The R will do you well then and I’m in full agreement with you, the 4 motion will be nice in our Midwest winters. I agree with the upgrades you mentioned. I’m not sure if it’s laziness or complacency on my part but I guess I just got used to the R’s features as they were when I got it and never looked into the 7.5 updates.

    I'm about to pick up my first Quattroporte GTS in 3 weeks. I'm opting for the 14 model due to the lower maint. cost. the car felt solid when I drove it and put a smile on my face. I did however start with the 2013 on my list. I drove 900 miles to drive one I liked. I loved the inside of the 13, so unique, classy, and sporty feeling all in one. If I could have both, I would. However... the build quality seemed lacking in the 13. The 14 felt more generic, but higher quality. To look at and listen to, the 13, to drive, the 14. I will love the 14 for a while maybe a 2021 with the 680HP next. I think the Maserati hands down is better to own. Its use able, and the name itself turns heads. and the QP, everyone wants to know what it is, and is never confused for another car! High end sports car start to blend in unless you have a high knowledge of them... The only other option for me would be a bentley... I like a car that turns heads, and the QP turns heads, pre 14 for sound post 14 for looks... I loved the cockpit int he 13, the dash and roof lines inside are amazing! These truly are as my friend and I say " rich People problems".

    I have a 2006 GTI and it does the same window glitch. Also happens to my moon roof. Or sun roof. I am just thankful it hasn't happened in the rain yet. I've been looking into the golf R as an upgrade, I'm just scared it's going to be a headache to rebuild once in higher mileage. The gti is so confusing under the hood. It's like VW made it harder on themselves with the layout on purpose. Replacing the slave&master cylinder wasn't fun at all lol. The engine eating the cam follower and having to play surgeon on the engine was scary lol. She still lives though. 172k mileage and completely stock...and a glooming timing belt job in the near future 🤞🤞

      @driven15 4 роки тому

      That’s awesome! And yes would suck to get the glitch in the rain haha! The R has been a companion. I do agree it’s a bit of a headache under the hood but doable for most maintenance tasks.

      Good question! I am VERY excited for the car. For what it means to the brand and as a vehicle in and of itself. I know looks at subjective but I think it’s fairly attractive. Like Maseratis take on an Alfa 4C. With that said, my whole personal philosophy on vehicle enjoyment is performance after a certain point isn’t worth much. The 458, 991 GT3, Latest iterations of the Gallardo...they all have more than enough performance for the road. So from here enjoyment comes down to a cars character. Which comes from steering feel, throttle response, brake feel, suspension feel...and biggest of all: SOUND. I think the 458 checks all those boxes best. So this vs 458 for the same money, I’d still take a 458. With that said the 458 now goes for less than the MC20’s MSRP. Good question.

      The Ghia is a car I want, badly. Hard top in blue. I agree. Especially with current social media trends, what captures attention is insane looks and performance figures. I think the basics are more important.

    whats the deal with rotating the tires, i mean i get it but why. im a mechanic in Norway and i have never "rotated tires" for a customer and never heard of anyone asking for it. here people mark their tires with L.F, R.F, L.R R.R so when they come in they want them on the same wheel they have always been on

    • @driven15
      @driven15 4 роки тому

      I also mark my tires, but with the intent of tracking miles on them in order to properly rotate. The front tires do more of the pulling, are biased for braking, and get the brunt of the effort in cornering. So they wear down faster. So either buy a set of 2 and replace the front at a higher frequency than the back or rotate and replace all together. I adhere to the latter, not saying it’s more right or not. Just what I do.

    At $90k I think the 599 was a no brainer. I think you could've owned it for a while and sold it before the winter and made some money in the process. I do love your QP though and understand you not wanting to part with it. Its funny you mention les intouchables. I still watch that scene from time to time. Also a quick question how many miles do you have on your car currently and how many of it have you driven? Enjoy the car in good health! Cheers!

    • @driven15
      @driven15 4 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment! I’ll answer the 2nd question first :). I got the car with 26K miles. I’ve put on ~8K miles, it’s currently at 34K (33,900 exactly). My low driving miles on is primarily driven by last summer not being in town hardly at all. I do thoroughly love the car. One of the purest driving pleasures out there honestly. As for the 599, I fully agree. Couple things there: the particular car I mentioned had the leather in the dash shrink back (apparently an $18-25K job by the estimates of the dealership selling). It also had leaking valve covers (which I was prepared to fix myself). I actually ended up making an offer on the car over the July 4th weekend. My offer stood for several weeks as the dealership and I went back and forth (I effectively offered asking and they said they’re going to auction the car). I waited. Car didn’t sell at auction (or to me). Price eventually went back to $105,000 and the listing was taken down a week later. Maybe the one that got away (?) but I’d rather THINK that then KNOW it about the QP if I sold it for the 599 (as I’m sure you understand 😀). The QP might not have any single redeeming features (smoother, quicker, faster, more luxurious cars exist). But god in heaven does it just know how to pull at your heart strings and never want to part ways!! Thanks again for the comment :)
