    I'd add a detail: steve uses high gain and the proper tune of compressor, then you get meat sound playing lightly 😼

    I always use the pointer finger when playing gallop at this speed but constantly alternate between middle and ring to maintain speed and avoid fatigue. Having low action helps a lot with the crisp Harris sound.

      alternating is "wrong" because you're always changing the accent note. but that's only if you reeeally want to sound like steve harris (like me)

      It’s the only part of his technique he ever talks about tied into the gauge of his strings. It’s really obvious in his tone. But besides that, this is a general tip that’s really important to understand. You will always gain more speed by picking lighter. Even if Steve was playing hard, he’d be able to gain a speed boost by playing light.

      You might be interested in the lesson I've done on Frank and our interview with him. Also worth noting that the full lesson this is taken from is about developing speed whatever the style. As you increase speed, the more relaxed you should become (just like a drummer). The fastest electric bass playing examples in the world are in jazz fusion (Hadrien Feraud etc.) and that kind of ridiculous virtuosity demands total relaxation. Classical instrumental technique is the model to follow in this regard. I always advocate ignoring rock/metal players for rock/metal players as strange as that might seem.

    I use 3 fingers. In high school, I had an accident with a knife that resulted in my right index finger getting stitched up and bandaged.
    I didn’t want to stop playing bass so I had to learn to play using my middle and ring fingers. It built up strength in my ring finger so when I got my stitches out I could use the three of them interchangeably. So for a gallopy Steve Harris line like this, I’d use all all three.

      Obviously it’s easy with 3 fingers. As I point out in the full lesson, that’s how I’ve always played it. As with all the lessons it’s not about showing a bass line. It’s about demonstrating technique. This is the perfect example for practicing good light fingerpicking. This also translates over 3 and 4 finger picking. It’s absolutely essential when trying much harder jazz lines a la Hadrian Feraud or Dominique Di Piazza.

      Remember this isn’t a rule of thumb. This is advice. Obviously anyone can play hard and fast but it’s much, much better for stamina and general playing technique to play lighter as you increase in speed. This is the same as the technique of a drummer. Yes, a drummer can play hard and fast but, as a general tip, it’s much more efficient to play lighter as you increase in speed. No matter how fast you can play hard you’ll be able to play faster lighter. John Myung included.

    Harris dont play like this. he hits a lot harder. His strings hits the frets and have 'ploc' sound very characteristic of Maiden songs.

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  5 місяців тому

      One thing you have to remember is that the actually 'hardness' of the hit is totally relative. The lesson here is about relaxation (this is just a short from the full lesson).
      I've noticed over the years with students that when I play totally relaxed and they play totally relaxed, my attack of the string will be totally different to their attack of the strings.
      Tens of thousands of hours of playing changes your physical makeup. It's the same as a power lifter easily lifting a weight that a regular person would not be able to move.
      The point of the lesson is not about 'how steve plays'. It's not about the song I'm demonstrating or his actual technique. It's about how to generate speed and, most importantly, stamina. This is all done with total relaxation and playing lightly. The 'clank' comes from his incredibly low action and incredibly heavy strings. He doesn't have to play 'hard' because the lines are easy to him. He just plays.
      Bassists that struggle with a line like this will not have sufficient years or hours of practice/playing. That's the only reason. Consequently, they end up playing harder (with more tension). The actual attack of the string is irrelevant. Steve will find it so easy to play these lines. Playing hard won't even occur to him. Beyond a certain attack, the tone doesn't really change.

    No. Steve plays pretty hard, hence all the fret clacking. Good way to do it if you simply can’t when you’re starting though.

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  Рік тому +2

      He’s talked about it many times over the years in interviews and I asked him about it back in the early 90s. The reason for the clank is the opposite. He has very high gauge strings (giving very tight tension) and he picks further back past the pickup (a very taut area of the string). That will always give less clank but the high makeup gain used because of the lighter picking gives his signature tone.

    • @brentinjapan
      @brentinjapan Рік тому +1

      @@talkingbasslessons Well, happy to be corrected if that’s the case. I just tried galloping lightly and there’s clacking but more when I graze the string, like with a glancing blow rather than just playing lightly normally and that seems to be the way he plays after watching some videos so thanks!! I take this as a bit of a feather in my cap because I’ve always played Maiden hard. I guess I could have relaxed but I’ve never had problems with right hand technique because of it so good.

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  Рік тому +1

      @@brentinjapan obviously the lighter you play the more you have to turn up and remember he uses flatwounds. Also worth mentioning that my idea of playing lightly might have more impact on the strings than someone else with less playing experience. Technique plays a part as does the development of your bass 'physique' over time. It would be a better description to say "play relaxed' rather than lightly. Yes, it's subjectively light but the impact of the finger on the string might carry more weight for the long time professional than a beginner or intermediate player just because of the naturally higher power in the hands.
      It's also important to remember he actually puts his arm and hand into the attack. So as much as his fingers will be playing lightly, he gets more weight behind the note. Again, it's all about relaxation in the arm. Steve isn't tensing up at all.
