So many magical girl stands claim Madoka was the first anime to bring tragedy to the magical girl genre and say it ruined it. But tragedy has been in magical girl anime for decades. Characters even died in Sailor moon. Then came back to life. I understand not liking tragedies in mahou shoujo. I get it. I prefer the happy stuff most of the time too! But you should not say it ruins the genre because it tried to be the new "edgy" thing. It's not new. At all.

about sailor moon, the author actually really wanted to kill off her characters from the beginning but her manga editor (i think?) was against it, so she couldn't and in the end the anime ended up killing characters anyways lol.

    • @alinagay3858
      @alinagay3858 4 роки тому +29

Whilst I understand what you're getting off of it, as a fan of both Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica; there is a difference between the two. Yes! Sailor Moon is admittingly dark and would have been fun if the manga explored the characters dying.
The difference is that Madoka Magica set itself out there as the first show to leave a LARGE impact. All Magical Girl shows are dark one way or another, but Madoka Magica sticks with you. The first three episodes were extremely light-hearted and gave you the feeling this was a kid's show.
      But it isn't.
To fully understand Sailor Moon is hard but much easier to unravel compared to Madoka Magica. They are both hard, yes, but to understand the true meaning behind both shows is hard to grasp. Sure, kids can watch both and say they understand it; but to an extent.
      Madoka Magica is good.
      Sailor Moon is good.
But they're different. Comparing them to each other isn't what you should really do, as they are essentially different sub-genres.
Also, who the hell says Madoka Magica ruined the genre? It just set out another sub-genre out there, what weirdos! ( No offense, of course, I'm assuming nobody who thinks this way is here reading this? )

Sailor Galaxia basically killed all Senshis minus Moon then ressurects them as zombies in Stars manga arc

    • @Stormchantress
      @Stormchantress 3 роки тому +11

Yes, Sailor Moon had some pretty dark arcs, but overall it was hopeful. Even if there was despair, it was only passing (senshi dying in season 1, Mamoru turning out to be dead in s5 - all this was fixed during a fraction of the series). In Madoka despair and hopelessness is the running theme and sacrifice is shown in a far more overwhelming manner - not only giving up life, but dooming yourself to solitude (as all the other Puellae lose their memories and reject Homura's claims) and losing your sanity by locking yourself up in a vicious circle. In a narrative solitude and madness is often perceived as worse than death, as the character becomes a prisoner inside their own mind. Sailor Moon never really went there (perhaps with Sailor Pluto, but it was only a minor side plot rather than the pivot to the whole story).
Basically, the difference lies in the very roles of the mahou shoujo. In Sailor Moon it's about overcoming obstacles and reaching a bright future. In Madoka it's a losing battle and the best you can do is delay the inevitable, as the battle is endless. The first moment they subverted the genre was the idea that you first get your wish and then have to work for it - normally the wish/reward comes after the mission is completed (e.g. in Super Pig) In classical mahou shoujo series it's "struggle for reward" and in Madoka we get doom and gloom regardless of what you do - the good part (getting your wish) is already in the past and whether you regret having it or not, you're now a slave until the end of your life. In a classic magical girl series you expect the protagonist to prevail in the end; in Madoka you're prepared for her to lose so much that it doesn't come as a cliche when there is a happy (or, rather, a bittersweet) ending.

The genre has a rich and long history so I can see and know that some were excluded from this video, but I'm surprised that Lyrical Nanoha wasn't at least briefly mentioned.
It had that military aspect later seen in Symphogear (Also both co-star the great Nana Mizuki). It's got a weird history as the series was spunoff from a concept from the universe of adult visual novel called Triangle Heart 3 that followed Nanoha's bodyguard/samurai brother. It was also a series starts with the title character at 9 years old and continues to follow her into her 20s and we eventually see her and her former rival/best friend's daughter and her friends take over the reigns for two seasons based on their school life and magical mixed martial arts careers, taking a step back from her Mamas' and their friend's military work even though there are mentions and references to it [the 2009-2017 manga/2015 anime Lyrical Nanoha ViVid and it's anime-exclusive sequel ViVid Strike! that released in 2016 even though was still a year left in the ViVid manga's run]. There's 5th manga only season, Magical Record Lyrical Nanoha Force, that's been on hiatus for years but had concepts that made it to the recent Reflection and Detonation movies, that picks up with Nanoha and friends again, this time at the age of 25. And last but not least, of course the Akiyuki Shinbo connection as he had worked on Triangle Heart 3's OVA and the first season of Lyrical Nanoha.

-No mention of Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha.
    -Misinformation of PreCure.
-Also, Cutie Honey was first with the LGBTQ representation.
-It's "Kinomoto Sakura", for you, subtitles not "Kinamoto".
-I don't see Correct Yui nor Tokyo Mew Mew (Mew Mew Power). (Last one will have a new manga or anime soon.) Mostly Toei and other popular magical girls.
-There's also "Ore Twintail", the first anime where a guy can transform into a magical girl yet still keep the formula instead of being just a parody.

Yeah, lack of Nanoha is a bit egregious, it was the first techological magical girl series, tho admittedly it started off as a classic parody universe example (like Pretty Sammy was for the Tenchi universe). Nanoha predated Symphogear.
Also, Toei's magical girls tend to use fisticuffs, even Sailor Moon. You can tell that Precure is literally cut from Sailor Moon's cloth, they merely just turned the full contact dial up. ;3

Everyone seems to forget about those two great series. My-Hime was a much better dark magical girl than Madoka. With only 12 episodes of Madoka, you get into the dark theme right away and dont get a chance to see the girls be...normal. So you cant sympathize with them if you hardly know them. My-Hime gives you 10 or so episodes to really get to know the characters, then, BAM, darkness and drama.

I'm sorry but you did not do your research on Precure at all!! You said "Yes Pretty Cure" Which doesn't exist, the season you were showing on screen was "Yes Pretty Cure 5 GoGo"! Also the original, Futari Wa, didn't have a "diminishing interest" it did well enough (Edit: In toy sales) to get a sequal with the same cast it was called "Futari Wa Pretty Cure Max Heart" which aired in 2005, then another season in 2006 with a different cast named "Futari Wa Pretty Cure Splash Star" that did good then we got another season, "Yes Pretty Cure 5" aired in 2007 and also did good enough to get a sequal "Yes Pretty Cure 5 GoGo" that aired the year after in 2008. GoGo was the season that nearly got "Pretty Cure" cancelled but Toei didn't give up on it and put out "Fresh Pretty Cure" In 2009 which could have been the last had it not done well, and we're so glad that it did well and made Toei make more and more seasons! There's not many people that speak english that talk about Precure enough so it would mean a lot to all of the fandom if you could get your facts right!! (Feel free to correct me on any of this!

30:52 That's not the second child the world isn't ready for...
Joking aside, I really dig this piece of history. For me, the best Toei Period would be when some kid shouts MAZIN GO! But again, that's just me.

I just went through comments and yeah, a lot of people noticed lack of Nanoha. Utena maybe as well. There has been a lot of magical girl shows which while worth talking about, they are not significant for the genre... Like: Hina Logi, Machikado etc. But Nanoha was a big deal and changed a lot. It was first magical girl shows straight up aiming at male audience which also was a big success.

魔法 少女 (mahou shoujo) is not really a genre that I'm into.
美少女戦士セーラームーン (Bishojo Senshi Seira Muun ... Sailor Moon) and カードキャプターさくら (Kadokyaputah Sakura ... Cardcaptor Sakura
) are pretty much the de facto series that represents this genre for sure.
魔法少女まどか☆マギカ (Mahou Shojo Madoka Magika ... Puella Magi Madoka Magica
) is the de facto, modern representation of this genre.
For those unaware, 美少女戦士セーラームーン クリスタル (Bishojo Senshi Seira Muun Kurisutaru ... Sailor Moon Crystal) is basically an anime remake of the original anime that is more faithful to the original manga source material.
Think like the difference (sort of) between Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

my access to anime was so weird that, Ojamajo was my childhood, while Card Captor Sakura was my teens.

What about Earth Girl Arjuna? My personal favorite, it also makes a pretty unique approach to magical girls genre.

Has anybody here heard of the Fairy Musketeers? It's really fun but woefully underrated. It's a good anime you should check it out if you don't mind a lighthearted series with fairy tale elements

Good to see more people trying to spread the word about the early days. You did a pretty good job on that and I appreciate the effort!
Madoka... mega popular and trendsetting though it may have been (oh god, has it ever), I still disagree that it's deconstructive. Even if you believe genre can be deconstructed in the first place (I don't [1]), it operated within its genre at all times. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it followed the nominal conventions closer than Uta∽Kata (2004) or even Prétear (2001). The weirdest thing about it was probably that Homura used ordinary bog-standard modern firearms and they _worked._
Did you really start with the third season of Symphogear? Weird. Also, Mecha and Magical Girls have collaborated for years. Nanoha was on TV in 2004 and you could say it was an old fusion then, depending on how you look at it. It's like Rock and Hip Hop.
Ore is far from the only parody series; knowing the history like you do, I highly recommend checking more of them out because they're a gas!
From a purely mechanical standpoint, I think you would benefit from taking the time to enunciate more clearly-- you sound rushed and muffled at times, which makes it harder to understand you. The other thing that I would recommend is working out how to handle Japanese names: pick a consistent order (family name first? Or given name first? You used both and it was weird.) and then look up how to say them so you don't wind up with things that are wrong ("Nejima", "Gen Urabichi") or inflected inconsistently ("Cardcaptor suhKOOrah", "muhDOUGHkah", et al)-- a bit of practice can do wonders!
[1] Genre are loose frameworks of related elements that lack intrinsic meaning so there's no "text" to form the tension required for it a self-annihilate on examination
