      This is a supplementary update comment I wrote right after I finished editing this video. Feel free to skip reading this if you don't care.
      Some people have noticed a big chunk of my back catalog of videos are missing. This was a deliberate choice on my end that I had been thinking about for a very long time. They aren't deleted or anything, they are just exclusive to channel members. Am I doing this because I'm greedy? Why not make these videos unlisted in a playlist for everybody to see? To answer that, I want them to still be visible to some extent, but not too accessible. I didn't make this decision because I wanna drain my viewers of their money. If this was all purely for the sake of profit, I wouldn't spend several hundreds on my videos, or even upwards of over a thousand dollars in the case of my Mr. Gimmick video, which I still consider to be one of my best work. The actual reason is because I don't feel comfortable having them fully public. I've been identifying as non-binary for a couple years now and most of my old videos were made at a time where I still forced myself to see myself as a man. I'm still the same person in many ways, and even now I'm still proud of everything I've made. It just doesn't make any sense for me to still have these videos visible. Objectively speaking, they aren’t up to part with my current output either, despite the fact that I’m still proud of everything I’ve made. UA-camrs do this all the time. I know this will be disappointing to some, but just like how you are entitled to feel however you want to feel about my decision, I am also entitled to my own emotions. My goal has always been and will always be to push the conversation forward. I've uncovered unknown information that has been unknown in the western sphere for decades through my own preservation and perseverance interviewing people first-hand. My discoveries are still going to be public even if the video it originated from is not.
      With that being said, I would like to not ever do something like that again. I would like to continue making shoujo and magical girl videos for as long as possible. There might be the occasional off-video where I talk about something that doesn't squarely fall into that same mold, but I want to actually grow, and the most reliable way to grow is by putting yourself in a box. Some people can get away with doing whatever they want, but I don't think I'll ever be that person. As mentioned in the video, I've had bad depression my whole life, and that still holds true to this day. My confidence is not always the greatest. I often feel alone and unloved. Despite my videos taking a very long time to make, I never have anybody clamoring for me to return someday or expect more out of me. My motivation is consistently quite low because I'm more often than not the only one to motivate myself. A couple years ago I thought about starting dating and I was in a relationship for 2 years that ended up leaving me feeling somehow even more lonely and pathetic. I won't go into personal detail about the relationship here in public for the sake of privacy, but around October of last year I went on a 3 month long vacation to this person's place. We broke up probably around a week or two into me being there. The decision was mutual though. That same week there was news of a shooter only a few hours away from us. That was fun. While being there, I ended up mostly trying to work on stuff. I'd spend all day at the library scanning books and return after closing time to do even more research and stuff in a chair that was mauling my back. My body was the stiffest it had ever been. I was in constant pain. For a while I was also dealing with cat allergies that turned my eyes bloodshot red and all sorts of sickness, but we managed to find some good medication for it eventually. Skipping more of the personal details about the relationship I don’t wanna go into, the process of going back home ended up being one of the worst things I had to go through. My connecting flight somehow got messed up so I was forced to stay at the airport overnight. No food, in the cold. I tried sleeping, but my hunger and body freezing kept me from being able to get any proper sleep. Mind you, I am a very light sleeper, so any amount of light going into my eyes or general disturbances will cause me to jolt out of my sleep immediately. After being awake for over 50 hours I finally managed to get on another plane back home. I had to sit next to this couple while absolutely reeking. I felt bad for them. Thankfully they weren’t complete dicks to me, unlike everybody else at the airport. While I was waiting on flight updates, I tried finding a place to sit down that wouldn’t blast light in my eyes for the 9+ hours I was about to wait for. There was this family next to me who were looking at me as I tried to find a good spot. I guess the dad assumed that I was going to take his seat, the only indicator of which could’ve been was a Mountain Dew bottle on the seat, that realistically anyone could’ve left there. He was going off at me for several minutes, trying to make some point about how you should kindly ask people before taking their place. I was literally only focused on checking for light. His seat would’ve been a bad place for me to sit. Anyway, after the ordeal of dealing with all of that and finally coming back home, anxiously awaiting my luggage as my body was literally falling apart, I had to take a taxi back home. It would’ve taken no less than 2 hours. Looking for a taxi was an ordeal in and of itself though. My anxiety was through the roof and I just wanted to get back home. The first and only taxi I ended up seeing ended up scamming me out of $200 when I only had $150 in my account. He ended up taking the money after stopping about halfway because he wanted to give me a “deal.” He called up his other friend who said he would drive me home for $50 flat. This was a trip that should’ve cost no less than $15 in total. Because my body was on the verge of physically collapsing and I desperately had to hold my vomit, I ended up taking it with my mom giving me $50 when I came back home to pay the guy. My mom and I were on call as I was driven back home, and as I explained my circumstances, she said “Honey, you got tricked…” The only thing I could say was: “Yes, I know.” But finally I’m back home in one piece and -$200 less in my account. I told myself I would relax for a bit, but I ended up unpacking all of my stuff and putting everything into place. Some of the boxes were a bit crushed, but I was mostly carrying home research material in the form of books, so those were fine. A copy of Pokemon Crystal in the box I gave money to my ex to buy for me ended up getting a tear in the middle of the box along with some crushing damages. The box wasn’t in the best of conditions to begin with, but it was also like $200 and yet another blow to me while I was already down, quite literally. Now that I was home and settled in, what was the first thing I did? Go right back to editing. The intro you see in this video was done in about a week. All that masking took a great toll on my arm and wrist, but I like how it came out, even if it was very painful. I think I managed to recover since then. Getting away from my ex gave me a spark of motivation to keep going. This video was actually a side project I had thought about doing for years, went to research it near the end of last year, and finally put together over about 4 months. A quick sidenote, the news of Akira Toriyama passing away was very shocking to me because at that point I had just written and recorded the Dragon Ball segment while he was alive, so I went back and threw in a line wishing him to rest in peace. Anyway I had another project I went to work on right after my Fruits Basket video that I’ve been putting on hold since my vacation because writing it was really starting to drain me. I do intend on finishing it though. I made it about halfway through the script, and while it’s gonna be a lot of hard work to finish it, I think it’ll be valuable to fans of that series.
      I say this to myself every time I finish a video and then the next one only gets bigger than the last, but I do want to experiment some more with shorter videos and get better at doing analysis. Maybe even do some more general topic stuff about shoujo and magical girls. Whatever I make, I hope you end up enjoying it. Thanks for hearing me out. I’d like to open up emotionally about things some more in the future.

    While Futari wa Precure was a success, It's actually Yes Precure 5 that popularized Precure to the point that it became household name in Japan on the same level as Kamen Rider or Super Sentai.
    There is a reason why only Yes 5 that got 2 sequels season(GoGo and Otona 23) and Nozomi/Cure Dream is the undisputable most popular Cure of All Time(You can actually tell from watching every All Stars crossover, She always got a special treatment on the same level as Black and White)
    It could be said that while Futari wa made the series, Yes 5 made the franchise

      Speaking of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai....
      Fun Fact: there are cd dramas where Super Sentai crossover with Precure. I believe it starts with Dekarenger with Futari wa but I think they stopped with Go-onger with Yes 5 GoGo.
      Another fun fact: Go-onger and Yes 5 GoGo crossover a lot! First with the cd drama I just mentioned, then this one ad they did along with Kamen Rider Kiva and Banshin from Battle Spirit Toppa no Banshin (speaking of Kiva there was one ad where Kiva and Cure Dream are together, possibly for a promo.) lastly Cure Dream recreated Go-on Yellow's roll call.
      There's also that one kid magazine with Kamen Rider Wizard and Cure Heart are.... married? (Well that's some potential crackship.) And Patren-1 and Cure Ange (from HUGGTO) had a child and it's......Cure Yell?!?? (Now this is confusing....)
      The Christmas cake every year.
      Precure being called "the little sister" to Kamen Rider.
      Lots of Doujinshi of Precure crossover with Kamen Rider.
      And don't forget that one promo music video with Kiramager along with Lupinrenger, Patrenger and Ryosoulger dancing with Star Twinkle along with HUGGTO and Healing Good.
      In all seriousness,Toei, where is our Toei Trinity crossover!!! Like, actually, A REAL CROSSOVER!!!!

      Otona 23 is evidence of Yes5's propularity but GoGo and MaxHeart are the evidence of why PreCure abhors sequel series. SplashStar not getting a sequel is probably something dumb about Michiru and Kaoru not being allowed to be Bright/Windy in name (except that Otona is a Splashstar Sequel so that just weakens the idea that it proves Yes5 supremacy even if Nozumi is also my favourite Tsukino Usagi).
      Just watching the subdued snark manifested in the GoGo final is evidence of a production revolt against the concept of ever making another full PreCure sequel series.

    Say what you want about Netflix’s Glitter Force, it changed my life. I was born into the era of streaming, so as a kid I got my shows from scrolling through Netflix and picking any show that was pretty and shiny. I was big into Winx, but unable to watch all of it, and of course I got into Pokémon and YuGiOh, but I also found a lot of classic Shojou. Glitter Force may be an objectively inferior version to its non-dubbed original, but it had me hooked. The transformations. The colors. The fun little story book scenes, I was big into fairy tales as a kid, so I loved them. The super cute little creatures. When I got older and season two came out, I became acutely aware of the lore and story of the series, as well as the stronger emotional moments.
    Smile PreCure was one of my first steps into Shojou. Without me even knowing it, it established a ton of the basis for how I would interact with media in the future. DokiDoki! PreCure is my favorite of the two series Netflix adapted, its story gripped me pretty much right away and I adore its characters and lore. It just struck me as so creative. I wouldn’t have thought of so many of those plot points and worldbuilding details, and I think stories like this have really impacted me as an artist and writer.
    Netflix didn’t have Sailor Moon, so while I’ve always been interested in it, I haven’t been able to watch the anime. I own all of the manga, and I adore it for so many reasons, namely how thoughtful the story gets towards the end and the sparkle sparkle pretty designs. As a kid I watched up to like episode three of Madoka before deciding it wasn’t for kids and dropping it, but I’ve gone back and watched it. You don’t need me to tell you it’s good, though not purely a Magical Girl Shoujou. The other Shojou gem of my childhood was a little anime Netflix hosted called Yuki Yuna is a Hero, or Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru. It’s my favorite anime and one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. While it can be heavy on the fan service compared to all the other titles I’ve mentioned, it was life-changing for me. It is by no means a Madoka knockoff.
    All of this is to say, a crappy Netflix dub of a PreCure anime permanently changed my life. My tastes are pretty diverse in terms of the media I consume, but I’ve always had an appreciation for Shojou and an ability to see it as more than just “Oh, so it’s like Sailor Moon”. I plan to check out some other PreCure shows at some point, as they’ve always made themselves worth the watch.
    Watch girly media, it’s good for you.

    IT'S BEEN SO LONG SINCE I GOT RECOMMENDED A PRECURE VIDEO OVER AN HOUR LONG 😭 (I'm convinced I've watched all of the others) but I have to say, this is really well put together! I'm a huge nerd when it comes to precure history, and there were lots of details here that I never caught before. I particularly enjoyed the segment about Inagami, I had no idea he contributed so much to Futari wa outside just being the character designer!
    Futari Wa is easily one of my favorite precure seasons, because not only does it deviate from other magical girl series with stuff like its color scheme, being centered around a duo, and heavy physical fighting, It's also just an all around nostalgic experience. The music specifically reminds me a lot of cardcaptor sakura (which was probably my favorite show growing up) so that definitely contributed a lot to why I enjoy it so much.
    I used to exclusively watch precure and pokemon in my early days of being an anime fan, but in these past few years when I've started diversifying what I watch, and now even enjoy lots of action shounen, I can honestly see lots of similarities between precure and those shows. Not to say that they were directly inspired by it, but it just goes to show how well futari wa's elements work for any type of story and don't have to be bound by its target audience of young girls to be appealing.
    I've seen every precure season, and honestly I found myself to enjoy every single one of them. Each has their strong and weak points, but at the end of the day I don't think I'll ever be able to hate an installment of a franchise so close to my heart. I've learned to see the positives in each season and admire them for what they are instead of letting the fandom's opinions take over my tastes.
    I definitely agree with the last part of the video. I think it's important that everyone should feel included in their favorite media regardless of things they can't control like gender. Whether that's better written shonen females, or more inclusion of male main characters in shoujo, everyone deserves to be included. It's still kinda sad how so many people hate cure wing for being a boy after the incident with the cure wing costume.
    Anyways, this was probably the best hour and 41 minutes of these past few weeks for me ✌

    • @HaydenTheHistorian
      @HaydenTheHistorian  6 місяців тому +24

      precure definitely takes from tokusatsu and shounen by the virtue of it being largely helmed creatively by people who love tokusatsu and shonen. then again men have always been heavily involved in magical girl anime and you can feel that in comparison to some magical girl manga written by women. but the best ones are the ones where the staff respect and hear each other out as creatives such as with akitaro daichi and precure

    • @Shortcake_ALM
      @Shortcake_ALM 6 місяців тому +16

      @@HaydenTheHistorian yes I completely agree! Precure definitely feels more like a shonen than a magical girl anime lots of times, which is part of the reason why I love it so much. Getting along is very important as that’s what allows everyone to pitch in their ideas and create the best possible story with the combination of different perspectives. Even though it was created by men, precure really feels like a collaboration between men and women to create something kids can enjoy regardless of their gender.

    One thing I think goes a bit underappreciated about Nagisa, is that she often shows herself to be a far better person than she can appear at a glance and has a surprising amount of hidden depths to her as a character (although calling her a super deep character would be an exaggeration). Chiefly being that she is actually for the most part pretty considerate towards the well being and feelings of others and generally puts there well being and needs before her own and is actually a pretty thoughtful and introspective person. She's also actually pretty intelligent, just not in an academic sense.

    Finally, The Lore we ACTUALLY deserve to learn. In serious, having finished S1 Futari wa Precure but prepping up Max Heart, it's nice having some clarification on "26 episode show gets 70 more AND movies than it knows what to do with story wise", tho it honestly feels more in line with what little I know of Tokusatsu production lines of scheduled on 13 ep arc developments but constantly adapting over the course of the show.
    I'm also impressed not just on the depth of production trivia on previous work like Air Master and Nadja, but convincingly using not just parallel thematic comparisons but fuller episode synopsis to compare to a Boy-Girl falling out vs Futari Wa's Iconic Duo that has yet to reach the same "totally-just" BFFs...possibly even more highlighting that writing in "absence" of a male character that both Honoka and Nagisa feel much more rounded and equal, perhaps from experience but perhaps also from not having a gender-centric plot beat so heavily characterize the two leads
    Among the many pieces of knowledge that historically build and weave what kind of force Precure would become, I also deeply appreciate the candid talk about *ahem* Magical Girl Sexualization (in the Otaku paradigm), which has kinda re-escalated in a lot of recent discourses. While I am plenty aware of the stances both of Sailor Moon has been taken as well as other contemporary shows, the deliberate effort put by Futari wa to explicitly NOT-cater to Otaku -as much as of course maintaining Child/Family friendly tone- DOES let the show re-focus on it's themes, if confidently demands "just" High Wuxia choreography without viscerality (minus the first generals being vaporized) and the bond of the two girls carries a show SANS fanservice. (although considering how Wanderful Precure has been received maybe it's pushed too far in the other direction by some voices).
    Will say with a limited experience in Sentai, it is interesting placing Futari Wa's card gimmick in the middle of a major Arcade-Card game craze considering Kamen Rider Ryuki being card themed and then later Blade in 2004, the same year as Futari Wa.
    Final word from a passerby, even discounting the "bad hetero romance" as standard Shoujo fare, Wakamiya Henri alone has sent Males in Precure progress back at least 20 years and even with Rosemary and Tsubasa, we're STILL in Misandry debt for his crimes.

    • @Anonlyso
      @Anonlyso 6 місяців тому +2

      @@HaydenTheHistorian It's one of those things that becomes foundational for the Otaku argument that Naoko is seen "giving her blessing" to Magical Girl Sexualization, but it feels dubious out-of-context, and even if Naoko herself is pretty pro Sexy Sailor Scouts, it feels dishonest to treat a genre largely made as Children media (specifically Young Girls) then never seem to acknowledge the line in the sand for Otaku, at least since PreCure became the Anti-Thesis. Even considering most of the type of MG stuff I consume, it needs to be said that Otaku/Adult Magical Girl shows are "secondary/subversive" to the genre conventions, not the standard wholesale.

I used to be bothered by how she didn’t match, but it all makes sense now. She and Milky Rose aren’t Cures because they aren’t your average girls. I wish Precure did more of this idea. When you think about it, Cures like Cure Ace and Cure Felice would probably fall into that category. It’s a shame they don’t do that anymore. Now Shiny Luminous and Milky Rose are kind of on their own

    My goal for over 12 years was to get people to watch Precure. Anyone I met who I talked to anime about with, I’d strongly sneak it into conversation and hope it worked. Only recently, I managed to convinced my small friend group to watch it with me and while one of them isn’t too happy about it, the other two have been enjoying it quite a bit! Half of my life I’ve spent trying to get people to watch Precure, so finally getting to do it has made me so incredibly happy!
    Related to that, we’re finally finishing Yes! Precure 5 GoGo this week (I haven’t seen it in years so I’m rewatching it with them), so the timing on this video getting recommended to me was wild! 😂
    I forgot to add, Cure Black and Cure White will forever be my favorites, with Cure Dream being a very close second! I just love them so much! 💖Especially as a girl growing up, I hated the way girls were usually shown in animation, so Precure kicking butt really empowered my child brain!😂

    I know I don't speak for everyone, but as a man, not only do I not feel the need for Precure to be directed towards me or other men, but I also don't *want* Precure to be directed towards us. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with men enjoying "girly" shows and media-I myself am a fan of several such franchises, and have been trying to get into watching Precure for a good while-but I don't believe that any such media would benefit from catering to the desires of a male audience, especially if doing so runs the risk of diminishing what made them so special in the first place. It's the mark of excellent storytelling to be able to appeal to people outside your target audience *despite* not writing your story with them in mind, and as an aspiring author it's something that I wish to achieve as well. I don't *want* male Pretty Cures. I don't *want* the creators to feel obligated to have their heroines share the spotlight with some guy. I don't *want* to be pandered to. What I *want* is for shows like Precure to stay true to their foundations, to continue to focus on their original target demographic and let the quality of the writing, not shoehorned inclusivity, be what draws in viewers from outside that demographic.
    I get that plenty of people disagree with the sentiments I've expressed here, especially in this day and age, and I believe they have every right to do so. However, I also believe that instead of demanding that pre-existing franchises be changed to accommodate as many groups of people as possible, the people who hold to these sorts of ideals should create their own *new* franchises. Their own *new* stories and shows. If you want media to adhere to the wishes of as many people as possible, then there's nothing wrong with creating it! You don't need older franchises to be refashioned to target everyone when you can produce your own media that does just that. All you need is a little creativity and a whole lot of passion, and the viewers will come pouring in.
    I could go on, but two paragraphs is a bit much as it is. To those of you who read this comment of mine, I ask that you at least take my words into consideration before passing judgement. You may find that we have a great deal of common ground.
    Until next time, Peace and God bless!

    I got jump scared by my own voice 😭 I'm so happy this video is out now! I'm admittedly not well verse in the world of Precure but this video was still easy for me to follow. Especially when your comparing the animation techniques to other shows. To speak a bit on the 2000's compared to now, I'm envious of how much better kids have it now compared to then. I think a lot of people growing up around that time were put into boxes and were pushed to not like certain games and shows because it was perceived as zesty or fruity. I feel for the lost souls who could never be themselves at the time

    I watch PreCure serie for 3 years and It's one of my fav all time ! I'm a french 15 years old girl and in France, PreCure is not popular at all, because of glitter force series. But there is a little community !
    Also my fav precure series are Futari wa, Yes 5 gogo, heartcatch, healin'good, and Hirogaru sky !❤
