The biggest addiction of pipe smoking is one’s obsession of collecting so many pipes. Also Malcolm you are a certain age like myself and therefore visiting the the long gone, well stocked pipe shops and tobacconists of various English towns and cities was an absolute delight to the senses, the smell of tobacco and the beautifully coloured exotic porcelain jars filled with various euphoric inducing tobacco mixtures, now sadly long gone and part of a lost world. “ Ah, the smoke filled blue remembered hills of one’s youth, where everyone seemingly drew contentment from a pipe and no self respecting wing commander or squadron leader, from Guy Gibson to Douglas Bader was seen without a British bulldog pipe clenched in his teeth.” So tally ho, old chap, and long may you keep puffing.
There is a wondrous word in German "Gemütlichkeit" that came to my mind when the poem was read. On google translations, it's described as "cozy, warm" but it's more than that. It's the chance to reflect, be joyous...it's, I think, an older cultural movement celebrated by the pipe. Thank you for sharing your smoke rings!
Beautiful! I'm in my 30s, and you inspire me to become the best gray-haired man I can hope to be. Relaxing in an old worn-down chair, blowing smoke rings with my pipe, a finger of Scotch next to me (good choice on the Ardbeg, by the way), and perhaps...if I am enormously blessed, reading poetry and stories to my grandchildren. This is heaven on earth, to me. If I can accomplish all these in my life, then I will know I have lived a good life.
Finishing my glass of bourbon with my pipe filled with Boswells Northwoods. I can’t imagine a better way to spend my evening after a long day of toil. Thank you Malcom for the poem explaining why my pipe is one of my favorite ways to relax. I am so enjoying your channel. Be well, Stephen
“To exercise the skill Of summoning the muses one by one To meet me in their temple, Touch my quill, I have a pen but quills are better still.” Wonderful!
This video, your commentary on pipe smoking, and your wonderful poem makes me so happy. I’ve smoked a pipe for a while, but it wasn’t till I listened to your poem that I could really explain to people why I love a good briar bowl so much. Thank you so much for this.
I started smoking pipe during finals in college, nothing can't dissipate my stress like taking a minute to sit and listen and smoke my pipe. Truly it is a persuit fit for gentleman of the soul
These poems and other odd bits have brought me lovely respite this week from all this stuff brewing and bubbling in the USA. Thank you for being here where I could find you.
So brilliant. Hearing you recite your words whilst smoking from your pipe. Oh you good sir are a most beautiful sight! So happy to have discovered you and your channel. All the best!
Thankyou Malcolm :)I was discussing smoking pipes with my Dad earlier today -he used to smoke them, as a kid I loved all the paraphernalia associated with it.
Good morning Malcolm, In these days of political correctness when smoking is frowned upon by the intelligentsia, it's nice to see a Cambridge don and college chaplain continuing the noble art of pipe smoking in the tradition of C.S. Lewis and Tolkien. There used to be a good tobacconist on King's Parade in the early '80s, Colin Lunn, sadly long since gone. I have been reading your anthology for Lent and Easter, though l don't find poetry easy, having not read it since 'A' level. We are living in strange times at the moment and, in general, the very best is coming forth from people. As a liberal Anglican l like to think that the Holy Spirit is working in those of all faiths and none, though many religious, and atheist, fundamentalists would not agree with me on this. God bless.
thanks for the encouragement, and I agree that the Holy Spirit is free to blow where he lists and inspire whom he pleases without respect to our artificial church boundaries!
Hi Malcolm, I just wanted to thank you for this glorious video. Whenever I feel stressed or annoyed I sit down and smoke my pipe while listening to this and it helps me every time! More poems about smoking while you are smoking a pipe is needed in my life, thanks again, you rock Malcolm! 🤘🏻😎
Hello Malcolm. I have just stumbled across your channel and have just enjoyed watching your smoke rings video. Thank you for posting such wonderful, personal content, especially pipe related experiences and stories. I have subscribed to your channel and will be perusing your videos tonight as I sit and enjoy a pipe of my own. I trust this message will find you well sir and again thank you for sharing your corner of the world with us all. Take care and happy piping.
Lovely poem. Thank you for sharing. I recently took up pipe smoking at the middle age of 51. I love it. It is so relaxing and great for the contemplative time.
My mother had me a wall hanging made with the last phrase of your poem, “A free man set me on a hill blowing smoke rings from my pipe” followed by your name after she saw and shared my fondness for the poem. I wish I could send you a photo of it. I have hung it over my my dresser were my pipes rest. I will treasure it.
Benathe the wind hale and sleet The worlds complexity meets my feet Ever present but never known A fleeting feeling far from home I gaze between the oil and light Reflections dance upon my sight Nestled beneath a well sewn cap My jolly old pipe, a well known chap. Blessings.
You say the right thing at the right time Malcolm and Smoke Rings from my pipe was just right for me today. Although now no longer a pipe smoker on health grounds, I relate to your pleasure in lighting up and the lovely feel of watching the smoke rise. Plus for me the aroma of pipe tobacco is dare I say attractive and gives a lovely sense of contentment. After a very busy day its been a pleasure to hear this poem nay a delight!! Dare I go back to my pipe it is still with my old grandfathers original brass pipe rack? I wonder?
My late DH smoked a pipe, which I always enjoyed. So did my step-dad. But I'm the one who liked the Isla and Jura and Laphroig...To be savoured and enjoyed. Thank you!
You and that poem speaks to my soul! This is why I love smoking pipes and yes I was smoking my pipe and drinking an Isley scotch when I stumbled upon your video! Cheers!
just found you while trying to learn to blow smoke rings. pardon my young’un’s slang but your vibes are impeccable. as a poet with a love for antiquey old-timey things like pipes you’re amazing
What a delightful video and beautiful channel! I’m so glad I’ve discovered you, thanks to DalePiper who gave you a shoutout! Best wishes and many smoke rings to come!
That poem will be the piece of writing I point people to when they ask me about smoking a pipe! Another great video sir. Long may you puff and sip and one day I hope we may share a glass and a smoke and maybe a couple of tunes on the banjo or fiddle or guitar with you on mandolin
Dear Mr. Guite my compliments on your poem, pipe and whiskey 🥃! I was made aware of your channel by Mr. John Pounder and share his view that there is much quality to be enchanted by in your videos. Kind regards from a locked down Milano 🇮🇹. SF.
This video is so fun. This is a tangible illustration of the differences between Nikabrik and Trumpkin: Nikabrik didn't smoke and refused to dance. Today, there are too many Nikabriks both inside and outside of the church, any kind of smoking having a negative stigma, people uptight rather than participating in the Great Dance.
Well spoken! From one old grey beard to another. Can't understand why any man would shave, as it's the mane that distinguishes the lion from other cats.
Ah, I've never managed to get smoke rings from smoking my pipes before. I have a couple of Peterson pipes too. A straight billiard (silver tip series I think it was) and a bent apple (Irish Army) I am quite fond of them.
@@MalcolmGuitespell they are indeed. I'm about to run out of my current supply of Virginia (Dunhills standard, one of the last batches I think before Peterson took over) are there any Virginia blends you could recommend trying? I'll get some more practice on blowing smoke rings while I do so I can recite this poem to myself.
Wonderful content Malcolm! Love your channel especially the lord of the rings and pipe content, Besides navy roles , Sherlock Holmes, the cherry aromatic you smoked with Dr Harrelson and Peterson Standard mixture what other blends do you smoke ? Any english blend recomendations that you smoke whilst writing or other? And your zippo is lovely is it a basic brass zippo? Or is it brass with an antique finish? A eautiful poem on pipe smoking by the way!! Peaceful bowls to you😃
Malcolm I have just discovered your Channel (recommended by a good friend) and I am delighted to have found you. The poem was wonderful and completely in harmony with my sentiments. You Sir are a very proficient creator of smoke rings...I guess the result of years of practice. I am now looking forward to working through your back catalogue of presentations.
Thank you Sir for sharing your thoughts on pipe smoking, the poem you recite exactly captures one of those pipe generated moments of panacea, which quell all of life's imposters of what we at first believe are challenges, however, your pipe, that of the house of Peterson's Sherlock Holmes original series, a make of which I have several, all extremely good companions, what you do not share, unless I have missed it, is what tobacco you are at that moment enjoying, this I would very much welcome to know. Once again thank you for taking the time to share these moments. God Bless. Steve.
Thanks. On that particular occasion I was smoking a Black cherry Cavendish because its an aroma my wife prefers (and she was holding the camera!) but on my own I sometimes smoke strange English mixes such as 'Sherlock Holmes, or Parson's Pleasure
This is who I want to be when I grow up...more pipe related content please🙂
its coming soon, in amongst the books

It’s sad to know that world is lost, and my generation will never have the chance to experience it.
As a 27 year old pipe smoker there's something special about working a hard days work and coming home to light a pipe at the end of the day.

Thank you, sir, for your UA-cam offerings! ]Pipes and books have been and are treasures to me, as well.
Gosh that was nice. The poem and the smoke. Could almost pick up the aroma. Gandalf may not be impressed but I am.
I love rewatching old videos and this one is the one I will always go back to beautiful voice and love the Peterson love from Ireland 🇮🇪
Ahhhhhhh. The smoke rings, aroma, a spot of whiskey, and a beckon call to the muse for poetic therapy! This made me smile! Thanks!
I enjoyed a pipe of my own while watching. Thank you, Malcolm.
