This is the best McCartney interview. It's rare an interviewer can show how funny and playful Paul is, like this. Conan does the perfect job of, despite being a massive fan, still talking to him like he's a person and not putting him in the awkward position of total deference and fanning out. (Looking at you Fallon.)
Exactly. By treating him normally Conan gets to see more of Paul's personality than Conan would if, like Jimmy Fallon, he just kept saying "you are so awesome" over and over.
that said - it would've been pretty memorable if he did perform fellatio on him.
Conan is a truly gifted interviewer, who can riff with the best of them. They both just explode with charm. Can't help but like and appreciate these rare talents.

Conan is such a great interviewer it’s unreal. No matter who he speaks to he gets them to laugh and open up. What a talent.
If you haven't seen when Howard Stern interviewed Conan, I highly recommend it for Conan fans.

Was there ever a point in Conan’s life where he’s not funny. He’s great.
At birth. He wasn’t funny at all - annoying, in fact. He wouldn’t stop crying and he didn’t crack a single joke. In fact, Conan, so traumatised by birth, didn’t say a word for over 15 months after that.

Conan reached out to Paul’s wittier side, which I haven’t seen anyone else do since the early Beatles when they were being witty just by themselves. It’s great to see Paul open up like this, haven’t seen him crack these type of jokes in a while.

Paul McCartney legitimately seems so comfortable talking to Conan. In some weird way I could picture Conan slipping seamlessly into the “Get Back” footage as a 5th Beatle. Like they’re just so silly together it’a amazing.
Knowing how big of a Beatles fan Conan is I can't believe how well he kept his cool (and quick wit!) in that interview. McCartney actually seems to enjoy talking to him! Granted, back then he hadn't given up pot yet, but still. Incredible!
Come to think of it, he'd also make a fantastic guest on Conan Needs A Friend.

You should listen to Conan's podcast, the episodes with Dana Carvey. They are both massive Beatles fans and they do a back and forth as John and Paul.

This interview is 9 months before Linda McCartney's death and 4 years before George's death. Paul has this aura of authentic happiness about him. Has anyone dealt better than Paul with being a massive celebrity?
I remember reading somewhere that he grasps the impact he’s had, the depth of his legacy on the music and cultural norms of the 20th century and the “normal” family life that he and Linda created and because of that he is able to be relaxed in interviews and performing. He doesn’t have to prove anything any more or be needy for love from strangers. He knows who he is and what’s important to him.

You left out John’s death which aside from Linda’s, had the most impact on Paul.
When you play in a band with Lennon (who never suffered fools and had a sharp wit), and you’ve been one of the most famous people in history with 60 year career longevity, you can hold your own with even the best interviewers.
Conan is excellent here but Paul is fantastic. The best interview I’ve seen with him in years

I know, it’s perfect; you can tell Paul was enjoying finally answering questions he’s never had to give a rehearsed answer to. Conan’s the best.
Conan brought out the great sense of humour Paul has in this interviewer better than anyone else. You can tell Paul enjoyed it and he likes Conan.
Good chemistry. Conan's deadpan sarcasm here was perfect. Quite similar to George or John's style. So was relatable to Paul.
I also had a little chat with Sir Paul. It was in the mid 90s 6. I co-owned a environmental and animal rights newspaper. I caught the eye of Ingrid Newkirk, the co founder of PETA
She was impressed with our newspaper and e deavors for animals and she introduced me to all of her celebrities so that I could interview them. The ONLY time that I was ever starstruck was while intervieing Paul and Linda MCartney. They were both so nice and sportive. They gave me several interview's and Linda gave me recipes that she never published for her cookbooks to use for my holiday editions.
They were, he IS so incredibly down to earth and all around nice humans.

Incredible to watch the humor back and forth between these two guys. I believe one of the things that made The Beatles (outside of the music, of course) was the comedic interplay of the four of them. In that way, it can be very tough to keep up with Paul McCartney. I believe it's also very difficult for some people to keep up with Conan when they're sitting across from him. So, again, watching these two giants in their fields interact was a real treat!
they are a hilarious duo!... now that Flaming Pie is getting a reissue it would be fitting to have him on the show again.
love that album! Jeff lynne plays on it and I think helps produce it. It's the only Sir Paul's solo albums I've ever heard. I didn't;t really love 'WINGS', except for band on the run, oh and live and let die.brilliant man. He's so engaging, and funny. I really do like Conan, I'm from Australia, so I haven't seen much of him except for you tube, and he is clever, entertaining, and self deprecading, which is nice to see, I'm not into the two Jimmy's, I don't find them funny. I did love the Sir Paul's Carpool karaoke with James Corden, that was a lovely trip down memory lane, and if you haven't seen it, do watch! Love the surprise in the pub! I love Liverpool. been a few times. cheers mate!

McCartneys hilarious responses to conans questions and comments are so fluid and instantaneous which makes it even funnier. His mind is as sharp as possible. Conan was so relaxed and funny and an interview mccartney probably didn't expect as all the others were the same boring typical questions. Definitely the most entertaining one I've seen with the great sir Paul mccartney!

The Beatles had massive charm and wit waaaay back when and I’m happy they kept it through the years. You can’t outwit them, many have tried.
I never was a big fan of Paul, but lately I’ve rediscovered his music. He is an amazing artist as well as a human being. He is so down to earth. What a genius!

Paul doesn’t get enough credit for being as funny as he is and has always been. People are very quick to attribute the humor to John because it was that legendary sardonic wit, but damn-all them Beatles were hilarious

I could watch Conan and McCartney talk for hours. The conversation is just so funny and fluently. There’s no room for awkwardness. Conan is a genius. Paul as well ofcourse.

Love this! Everyone always asks him the same stuff but Paul has such a great sense of humor. If an interviewer can play into it, they’re seemingly able to win him over
You can really see how Paul genuinely liked Conan here. Although he must be starstruck like other interviewer, Conan's not overtly nice and he managed to break through that barrier of the 'fan admiring interview' and instead just treated him normally and even made jokes about him. He brought out the witty side of Paul that only his close friends must've seen, it's a new fresh side of entertainment!
I've watched 100s of McCartney interviews and I'm pretty sure this is the only one where he legit laughs. Thanks you, Conan! You're a legend
