So the original version by Simon & Garfunkel, was released in September of 1965. Here are the lyrics: “Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share No one dared Disturb the sound of silence "Fools" said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence" Source: LyricFind
Michael Crawford has the same affect when he sings Phantom of the Opera. David pulls emotions out of a person like few others and your body rises and falls with his singing. Glad everyone is enjoying it.
This song, and the way David Draiman sings it, seems to perfectly capture the current pain and despair that many Americans are feeling right now as the silence from policy makers is deafening .
@@hearthenoise9574 Great story behind this one. David Draiman was sick that day. It, however, did not prevent him from delivering a performance for the ages, complete with an orchestra. It was also the performance that Paul Simon saw. He reached out to congratulate the band in the days after, telling them that it was the best cover of any of his songs ever. He also posted it to his social media directing his fans to Disturbed. Earlier this year, Conan celebrated the performance as it became the first video from his show to hit 100 million views. Years later and I still check UA-cam everyday to see new people reacting to it. Everytime I view someone new reacts to it feels like the first time I heard it with the added advantage of knowing which parts of the song are going to shock the new viewer. In that lies the true power and beauty of this song.
Double thumbs up for this reaction. I`ve watched dozens of these and your`s is the first one not to show the video, which is a good choice. It forces the viewer to concentrate on the reactor (and it sure helps if they are easy on the eye ;)) without being distracted by the visuals, which is very easy with this track.
Wonderful, authentic reaction. You have become one of my favorite reactors. What's crazy is that Paul Simon wrote this at age 23. This is a powerful version but I'm still partial to Simon and Garfunkle's many versions, both studio and live.

When Paul Simon heard Disturbed perform this one at the Conan O'Brien show he tweeted it was no longer his song but Disturbed's. When the composer of the song says it's his favorite version it gotta be the highest form of compliment one could possibly get.
It's a powerful message... it's long been my contention that people don't actually communicate, but simply have a set of standardized utterances on some sort of playback loop! Any unfamiliar stimulus tends to be treated with suspicion.
The lead singer is David Draiman, the lead singer of the metal band Disturbed. It shocked everyone that he could sing like this. He is classically trained and has a power in his vocals few ever had.
Absolutely. I've become a huge fan of reaction videos, especially movies, for precisely the same reason. There was so much to see in Mo's reaction to the changing tempo and the incredible range of David Draiman's voice that it reminded me of the emotions I felt the first time I heard it. Keep up the great work Mo!
I was going to chastise you for not using Simon and Garfunkel's original version, but I listened and this one is very powerful. Thank you for sharing, this old guy learned a lesson,
I love watching real reactions to this song. It’s sooo relatable. The emotion and passion in this song is insane. First and ONLY song to ever reach me in the depth it has.
This one makes me cry every time. Best cover EVER. I love Disturbed and David Draiman rocked this song right out of the ball park. He has range, too...and he's a classically trained opera singer...he's amazing.

@@MorenikejiTaiwo the best way i have heard this song described, is as follows. The Simon and Garfunkel version was a warning, the disturbed version is anger at the warning going unheeded
Mo, I think the best way to appreciate this incredible version of this song, is to also listen to the original version, In my opinion this cover is much more meaningful and dramatic. The control he has over his voice as the song builds to its crescendo . the slow climb of the music and the drums make this a haunting version. The song is a very meaningful and masterfully written song no matter which version you like. And if you don't mind me saying so, you are absolutely stunningly Beautiful.
The differences are very interesting... it's my first time hearing this cover and it takes the emotion to another level in a powerfully explosive manner with heavy metal undertones while the original, which admittedly is more to my liking, is smooth, harmonious, and beautifully balanced. For people who like both then you'd enjoy Bridge Over Troubled Water (by the same original authors Simon & Garfunkel) which is somewhere in the middle and has that soft beautiful sound that builds up to an emotional crescendo but manages to stay in the angelic realm rather than going metal. Good stuff.
Yeah. David is quite a bit of something special. This song was even from the Simon and Garfunkle recording, a gut punch as in how it reflected people in their apathy. David just kicked it up a few steps. Nice to see you enjoying this.

I absolutely LOVE Disturbed's cover! It is my personal favorite, and I love watching other's reaction to listening to it for the first time. Disturbed's cover for the song is packed, I mean PACKED with emotion! And the video adds to that emotion with the visuals of the instruments scattered all over & the piano keys burning, all the people standing on the other shoreline, the boat that resembles an Ark, and especially his face with a soft look in the beginning, growing more "disturbed" (excuse the pun, but it's true!) with every verse, until the climax, then bringing it immediately down to the end, where he leaves us speechless & needing to catch our breath. Simon & Garfunkel sung the original song, which was more of a folk song & was a hit in their time & I loved their song to begin with. It was written after President John F Kennedy's assassination & dedicated to him. Disturbed gave it a lot more feeling & brought it to modern times

Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence"
