A lot of hikers use Smart Water...not for the brand, nor the water really...hikers use Smart Water for the bottle. Smart Water bottles have a standard 28mm lid that fits the most popular water filters and the bottle is fairly solid while being very light weight, and they are easy to get or replace.
Smartwater also make a reuseable aluminum bottle that doesn't have BPA. It's an annoying size though. The regular bottle is a great one and I always buy it in the airport.
@@thebandit9982 According to Smartwater and their competitors, they use BPA-free plastic for their bottles and there is a method for checking the bottle itself: "Turn the plastic container upside down and check for a number printed on the bottom - this indicates the plastic resin identification code. If this number is either a 1, 2, 4, 5, or 6 then you can rest assured that your beverage is officially BPA free. On the other hand, if you see a 3 or 7, there's likely BPA present." BPA was removed from most plastic water bottles, including Nalgene bottles, and water bladders back around 2010. That still does not answer your environmental concern for using disposable plastic bottles, but that's why most hikers re-use the bottles, sometimes for years, with a little cleaning. Of course, some people question the health aspects of using an aluminum water bottle and there are environmental drawbacks to producing either aluminum and stainless steel bottles. I guess we all need to make choices that match our personal concerns. Oh, and now BPA has been found in high concentrations in socks, shirts and sports bras. Maybe we all start hiking naked?

I remember trying it because I suffer from chronic heartburn, which is acidic and made worse by foods high in acid (including most fruits like tomatoes and citrus fruits) and water can hurt too; so I’d usually drink alkaline water when I have painful heartburn. It’s not something that fixes heartburn, for sure. But unlike plain water it doesn’t make my heartburn feel worse. So I usually keep a bottle or two for my heartburn nights; alongside medicine.
I drink alkaline water when I have heartburn too, and I agree with you, it's not as offensive as normal water. It also helps me when I'm feeling nauseous. I think it works, it seems to for me at least.
Your stomach naturally produces hydrochloric acid, which is a super strong acid, to digest food and kill bacteria. Adding a couple of slightly acidic food into this gastric juice is not a big deal. What is a big deal however, is preventing this acid mix in your stomach from leaking into your esophagus (which is the actual cause of heartburn). But if that water makes you feel better, and you don’t mind the price, then that’s fine
Alkaline water is a complete scam. In fact, if anything we should be aiding our stomach acids by drinking apple cider vinegar, which is acidic, to help break down excess fats complex carbs etc, and aid in metabolism. Acid reflux is really your body over compensating with stomach acid in order to reduce the excess alkalinity. Which is why drinking ACV is such a good remedy. In any event, stop with the alkaline water myth.
I managed to get rid of my heartburn after years of taking drugs (ranitidine (now listed as carcinogenic), nexium, ext…), buy drinking or (better yet) taking capsules of Apple Cider Vinegar (500+ mg). The theory is not that your stomach has too much acid, but it leaks into the esophagus. The ACV causes a reaction that makes the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) stay contracted preventing heartburn. From my limited research, there are limited studies evaluating ACV. But for me, it works.

I actually used Body Armor water to help my stomach ulcers. The theory I had was that the overboard acidity of my stomach acid was eating away at my stomach lining and the lining wasn't doing a good job with the film to protect it from the acids. So to help, I started drinking Body Armor water. I would drink maybe 1 Liter a day if I needed it, otherwise I was working on eating a better diet, eating less, managing my stress and working out. I could tell the Body Armor water DID make a difference in how my stomach reacted to things I ate or didn't eat. I was able to make a recovery but it took literally 1 year for the alkaline water I was drinking to help make a big difference. Today, I no longer suffer from stomach ulcers thanks to the water and the better habits/routines and stress relievers I was using to control my bodily reactions. So I can definitely say alkaline water DOES help with stomach acid but it is absolutely not an overnight miracle cure. It's more akin to drinking some Pepto-Bismol but in water form. People saying it has no use aren't 100% right but they are like 95% right.
Honestly I buy smart water bottles for the bottles, not the water. They're great for backpacking but now there are alternatives that have almost the same shape/weight bottle.
One claim that people make for alkaline water is that it changes the pH of your body. Well, if drinking alkaline water or eating acidic foods actually changed our blood’s pH, we’d be in trouble. The body is good at buffering what we ingest, and we can eat either acidic or alkaline foods without the pH of our blood being measurably changed.
- "Well, if drinking alkaline water or eating acidic foods actually changed our blood’s pH, we’d be in trouble." Has someone said that the goal of drinking alkaline water is to change the pH of blood or what exactly is your point?
There was a video of some celebrity (Gwyneth, I think), who was taking an alkaline water and adding a dash of lemon juice, making it...into regular water? After this, you know they have no idea what's going on.
Maybe they do. Adding a dash of lemon juice to regular water would make it acidic, whereas really you want your water to be PH neutral. So if you want the lemon flavour, it's best to take it with alkaline water.
Just to add I've talked to doctors that suggest baking soda water (which is alkaline) for acid reflux by neutralizing excessive stomach acid So even in the marginal case where its actually useful, you don't need to buy the "alkaline water" marketing

I used to drink essentia water when I worked for the post office. Not because it was alkaline but because it has electrolytes in it. I didn’t want to drink Gatorade or anything sugary. It was so expensive but it really did help me with working during the summer.
You can also get electrolytes from Glaceau Smartwater. It doesn't have this ionisation or alkaline nonsense (some varieties do, but the main version doesn't).
Salt and sugar are electrolytes and the cost of sugar and salt in Gatorade is probably a few pennies compared to a dollar for a bottle of Gatorade, plus Gatorade bottles usually get put in a landfill and plastic is made from a finite resource.
The oxygen concentrators that our company uses for in-home medical use need plain water, preferably distilled water, to humidify the air to prevent drying out of the patient's nasal passages. One time I got a service call and when I arrived I noticed the water bottle was completely crusted over and severely limited in the airflow. The family said that they had been using alkalized water. I have no idea why they thought that was a good idea when we advise against even using tap water because even that has minerals that over time can clog the machine.
Yes! Definitely do a water filter video. Just be sure to check the altruistic actions some filter companies perform by donating a portion of their profits in product to locations that have unsanitary water sources.

idc about alkaline water, but Smart Water water bottles seem to have a universal sized cap that fits numerous filters, bladders, and attachments for hiking and camping. The .5L is a $1 at my local convenience store, the 1.5L only $2, ngl $2 for a sturdy reusable bottle is pretty awesome. Plus you can buy them anywhere so even if you forget yours at home you can always get an inexpensive replacement.

Generally I’d agree that the health benefits are way overblown, but a bottle of Essentia can come in CLUTCH for acid reflux. Same basic principles as tums or pepto, but in a much more enjoyable and smooth way. I was on an acid reflux diet for like 9 months and slamming a bottle of essentia with dinner really helped. Most tap water is like 7.2 ph, so that 9.5 really helped even everything out.
“Just drink your tap water!” Easy to say. I live in an area with amazing tasting tap water. But I’ve traveled to other places where the tap water tastes horrible. I went to Vegas this summer (which is something I don’t recommend), and the tap water tasted terrible. Even worse is an area of central Oregon where the water is safe to drink, but has a lot of sulfur in it due to the local geology. It tastes and smells like eggs farts. Regular tap water isn’t always the same as bottled water.
The simple fact that is once you swallow this stuff, it's going to hit the stomach juices which contains hydrochloric acid that is around a PH of 2 (very acidic) and be neutralized. You would have to drink a lot of this water fast to even dent the stomach PH - and it would be temporary as your body adjust to try to keep it at the normal PH level. It is acidic for good reason. After the stomach you have another PH change in the duodenum to neutralize the stomach acid before the food enters your gut - which your body also regulates. There is simply no way that you are going to influence your body's PH level based on what you eat and drink - and if you somehow did manage to, you would likely die because blood PH needs to stay in a very tightly controlled range. So if this product works for anything, it would either be something to do with regulating PH in your oral cavity, or as a treatment for acid reflux.
I never really bought into the whole "once-consumed, alkaline is better than acidic" debate...but I will say that drinking one less thing that passes through your teeth that is acidic is a plus. In addition to that, getting something that is geared more towards being antioxidant, and proper hydration through electrolytes, isn't exactly a bad thing. I do like the mouthfeel of waters like Fiji, which has a milky texture to it and is more pleasant to drink in my opinion. Alkaline water has been proven to provide a few healthy benefits that have nothing to do with body pH, such as: taming heartburn and acid reflux symptoms.
Why do people say water is free in your home? Unless you live in an apartment where water is included in the rent, you are getting a water bill. Yeah, it's ridiculously cheap compared to bottled water, and it's free from public drinking fountains, but it's not actually free on the aggregate level. There's like a whole infrastructure to provide it to you, and that's a public service which you are billed for.
I suffer from acid reflux and regular water can exacerbate it. I drink alkali water(Kroger house brand, same price as regular bottled water) because it helps keep my acid under control.
The only difference I find in water brands is taste. If I open a bottle and it makes a "Psssht" sound, I know it's gonna taste like creek water. Aquafina and Dasani (owned by PepsiCo and Coca-Cola respectively) sounds like soda when you open them, and they taste absolutely terrible.
My urologist prescribed alkaline water for irritable bladder. My own experiments are that acidic liquids bother my bladder more than acidic foods: one lemonade will cause pain for hours (Prelief helps). Does alkaline water help in general compared to regular? I’ve no idea, but it can’t hurt.
Fun fact if you put in salt before you ionize the water you get bleach (Sodium hypochlorite)! You can actually get USB spray bottles that make their own bleach by doing just this, so the lesson for you is... don't salt your water before ionizing I guess?
Here is my issue, maybe you have some recommendations. Tap water in my area is not an option. I have to remain hydrated and my doctors have told me to stay away from anything acidic across the board. Foods, drinks, snacks, everything. A ‘normal bottle’ of water is acidic. (Aquafina- 5.63 Dasani- 4.71 Voss- 5.9 Deer Park- 4.89) I mean we agree that water should be as close to 7 as possible, I have yet to find a brand that is remotely close to 7. The only brands that are the correct numbers is the Ph marked brands. So I again ask, what am i supposed to do? Secondly, I understand that you are extremely PRO-TAP. I used to be the same way. A few things over the past few years have changed my mind, not health related at all. Just in the testing of the water that is actually coming out of the tap in my home. The USGS released a report a month ago stating “Over 1/2 of US Faucets Contain Harmful Forever Chemicals (PFAS)” If you read their study, and they are an non-bias group, it not only shows the areas where these chemicals are found- but that these chemicals in the water have a DIRECT connection to leukemia, liver damage, decreased fertility, asthma and thyroid disease. The FDA then re-released their study and stated it was best for each area to contact their local water authority to receive PFAS numbers. Now you know, and I know the incredibly small amount of people that would actually do that. Well I did. The previous study had the number at .03 now it is at .80 that is a number that can never decrease and is constantly flowing here. Now it is not extremely unsafe, but they are called forever chemicals for a few reasons. They are forever in the water supply, and then they are forever in your body. I just believe it is unsafe to slowly poison yourself without knowing it. Yes, bottle water is a scam, the biggest one in the history of - 🤷🏻♂️… life. That doesn’t mean there aren’t companies currently poisoning the water you have at home. Just be hyper aware mate, wishing you the best.
Bottled water is going to have those same forever chemicals and pfas. It is not immune. It is not special. It comes from the same source water as where the municipal water supply is pulling. The bottle is not a safety guarantee. At least with tap water you can go to the website of the utility and look up the water quality data on the consumer confidence report.
What would typically be considered "Alkaline" water can be preferable for brewing coffee because it absorbs less of the more astringent aromatics, so if you want it for said purpose, just find you nearest local water well and they will probably have it for like 50 cents a gallon
Notably, it's not better, the mix of bitter and acidic flavors at a high intensity are why a lot of people drink coffee, and it wouldn't make someone who doesn't like those flavors like coffee, it just rounds of the edges a little bit
If you live in Florida you keep bottled water on hand for hurricanes. If you live in South Florida you also keep it on hand for frequent boil water advisories & water main breaks due to outdated infrastructure. Otherwise I drink the yellowish tap water & also have a Zero water pitcher. So when I buy bottled water it's for the taste; usually gallons of distilled water but in smaller versions Smart Water is one of the few I like.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure alkaline water has first been distilled to remove impurities, fluoride in particular I’m concerned about. The advertised pH level added back in are simply what they’re decided to use as the marketing strategy.

Thanks for this video! My wife and I live in NJ and there are many reports of the tap water being very high in heavy metals. I would love to see a video of water filters! We have Berkey brand filter with heavy metal and fluorine filters. It would be interesting to see how different filters stack up against each other.
I've found the water to actually be helpful for a few things. I have sensitive teeth, but like certain acidic foods. Chasing acidic food with this lets me avoid excessive sensitivity. I also find that it helps with my heartburn. I tend to get it when I am driving for a long time, or randomly in the middle of the night.
Another thing to add is if your body is running too acidic you can take something like Tums which is just baking soda to rebalance that ph through well understood simple chemistry.
Or simply put 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 cup of water and drink, that should cover the need. (DISCLAIMER: I am not a physician and do not play one on TV. Do not drink more than a couple of baking soda solutions a day. If the baking soda solution does not work after two uses or acid problems continue, please contact your physician for diagnosis, excess acid may be related to heart, stomach, or other organ problems.)

Smart water has electrolytes and can help with headaches. Although, you can get electrolytes to add to tap water and get the same effect. If I feel a migraine coming on, I'm getting whatever is convenient.
Some people (myself) drink alkaline water simply for the taste and not for health benefits. I live in a city with highter than normal levels of lead in the tap water (besides for that, the water also tastes nasty). I am anyways buying all the water I drink . I normally get the purified water at target since its the most affordable, but every once in a while I splurge on Alkanine water which is delicious.
That’s how we do it at the water plant… of course we only add enough to reach a pH still less than 8. Perhaps we should aim higher and charge more money for it?
Your stomach dumps loads of acid on any food it gets, for a reason. The downside of too much acid is acid reflux. The downside of not enough acid include greater risk of food poisoning. That acid kills bacteria. People used antiacid tablets for years before someone tried to market what is basically a predissolved antiacid tablet.
Small critique coming from a scientist. Rather than saying "proves" when referencing a study, say "supports" or "provides evidence for..." This also helps lower confusion when you then talk about a study's limitations.
The purpose of smart water and alkaline smart water is to provide low cost, reusable backpacking bottles with water included. They introduced the alkaline version so we can have multiple colors to choose from. I use blue/regular for filtered water and black/alkaline to keep pre-filtered water in. It's a good deal
If you want good water buy a filter for your tap water, if you need bottled water try and get natural spring or artesian water. Spring and artesian water is taken from the source. Purified water, most of the time, is taken from your municipal water, heavily processed which removes all the minerals that hydrate you, sprinkle a little amount back in, bottle it up, and then sell it to you. Purified water has little minerals, or TDS level, that doesn’t hydrate you properly. It’s a reason why Dasani doesn’t hydrate you. Spring water has a natural and varying TDS level which will hydrate you better. You guys should listen to Martin Riese the water sommelier on UA-cam. It’s really eye opening.
I buy SmartWater for the bottles. I reuse them and fill them from my tap. But if I leave one behind somewhere or it gets thrown out, I just pull out another one. They are incredibly durable bottles.
Vapor distillation is a process by which water is purified through a specialized heating technique that removes chemicals, bacteria and other particulates. I.e minerals
I never heard of Alkaline Water, All I remember was from c. 1977, Civil Defense stores of water. They had to be Preoxygenated, as once the oxyline left the stored (5 years?) water it was "Undrinkable". That involved pouring the water into a new container... to allow oxygen to reenter the water? [And add ONE drop of Bleach per FIVE Gallons of water.]
I remember one millionare once making a comment about "Smart" water saying, so you pay $2.50 for a bottle of water versus the $1 bottle which is probably just as clean and good for you... that's not too "smart" is it? Yeah I mean it might have more electrolytes or whatever but you're paying a premium for that. You can get the same stuff from eating healthy foods. The biggest thing is that your body just gets clean water, that's about it as it relates to water.
there are two reasons to buy smart water, to get a quality bottle to carry with you with a standard plastic bottle cap for hiking to use with a filter system, the other reason would be to use it like tums to treat acid reflux.
I like the bottles on the bigger great value ph water. Plus, I might be crazy but I also prefer how it tastes. Is it better for me? I really don't think so, but thats never been why I have bought it lol
I was at a BBQ party once, and there was a couple there that would only drink the water they brought from their Kangen system. All while drinking beer and wine and eating hot dogs and smoking. Somehow that water was going to "undo" all that other damage. This was like 15 years ago too, so these ideas have been foating around awhile.
Years back I probably would have said the same thing about those people you are talking about drinking the kangen water but the only thing I can say from experience and trying to learn about the water we should drink is that you should give that machine a try and see the benefits that you would get from it. Find someone that can give it to you for about 3 weeks and you would not regret it. Best of luck for you and your health

I didn't know electrolytes was become a fad in water. From a medical and sports view, electrolytes such as sodium and potassium are important and essential components of proper cell functions (the usage of sodium potassium pumps in the cell membrane). So if you have an issue where you're losing lots of fluids (such as diarrhea, or you're just sweating a lot like in any hot environment or strenuous physical activity) then refilling on those essential elements is just as important as the actual fluid that is lost. Most people in their everyday life have zero need for a water with electrolytes.

A lot of hikers use Smart Water...not for the brand, nor the water really...hikers use Smart Water for the bottle. Smart Water bottles have a standard 28mm lid that fits the most popular water filters and the bottle is fairly solid while being very light weight, and they are easy to get or replace.
Smartwater, Life water, Essential, any bottle that has a 28mm threaded neck for a Sawyer filter!
Problem is it’s sitting in that plastic and it absorbs the BPAs and is bad for the environment
On the other hand, if you see a 3 or 7, there's likely BPA present."
BPA was removed from most plastic water bottles, including Nalgene bottles, and water bladders back around 2010.
@@thebandit9982 There are as many quality studies about BPA effects on humans as there are on alkaline water's effects on humans.

@@IQ-Gameplay and whether it’s placebo effect or not; I know I feel better for this one specific thing.
Bottled water industry being this big is a travesty tbh

The bottled water industry should really be called the plastic bottle industry because while the water lasts but a moment, the bottles last forever.

I've talked to doctors that suggest baking soda water (which is alkaline) for acid reflux by neutralizing excessive stomach acid
So even in the marginal case where its actually useful, you don't need to buy the "alkaline water" marketing

Salt and sugar are electrolytes and the cost of sugar and salt in Gatorade is probably a few pennies compared to a dollar for a bottle of Gatorade, plus Gatorade bottles usually get put in a landfill and plastic is made from a finite resource.
The best line I have heard is "If you are still buying smart water, it's not working".

Don't support Nestle a horrible company that does/did stuff with abortion too
My favorite thing about Smart water is the bottle itself
“Just drink your tap water!”
Easy to say.
I drink alkaline water, a local brand tho, because of stomach acid. It works.
Otherwise not many reasons to pay extra for essentially nothing
Why do people say water is free in your home? Unless you live in an apartment where water is included in the rent, you are getting a water bill.
Yeah, it's ridiculously cheap compared to bottled water, and it's free from public drinking fountains, but it's not actually free on the aggregate level. There's like a whole infrastructure to provide it to you, and that's a public service which you are billed for.
I suffer from acid reflux and regular water can exacerbate it. I drink alkali water(Kroger house brand, same price as regular bottled water) because it helps keep my acid under control.
You got the H+ and HCO3- reversed. H+ neutralizes bases and HCO3- neutralizes acids

Some people (myself) drink alkaline water simply for the taste and not for health benefits. I live in a city with highter than normal levels of lead in the tap water (besides for that, the water also tastes nasty). I am anyways buying all the water I drink . Pro tip: you can make super alkaline water by adding caustic soda to regular water. It will act much faster than normal alkaline water

Imagine unironically buying bottled water when you can get it from a public toilet for free 🤤🤤
I got a tap water filter, had it for years. Makes my tap water taste better than most bottled water I've had.
I like the bottles on the bigger great value ph water. Plus, I might be crazy but I also prefer how it tastes. Is it better for me? I really don't think so, but thats never been why I have bought it lol
Captain here... H+ Ions turn things acidic by definition
@@gustorres3626 My story isn't a criticism on the alkaline water or alkaline diets either, but that they would make the effort to have this special alkaline water but then do these very unhealhty (unalkalizing) things like smoking, drinking and eating bbq'd processed meats.
WATER FILTER VIDEO PLEASE. i finally invested in one recently
Multiple times in this video he says "The free water out of your tap."... Okay, is it not normal to have a water bill???
Off topic, why wasn't this a Future Proof Health channel video? I noticed we haven't had one for a bit.
I do but bottled water.., guilty. but also there has been higher than acceptable lead levels., in our tap water.
Another great video
I didn't know electrolytes was become a fad in water. From a medical and sports view, electrolytes such as sodium and potassium are important and essential components of proper cell functions (the usage of sodium potassium pumps in the cell membrane). So if you have an issue where you're losing lots of fluids (such as diarrhea, or you're just sweating a lot like in any hot environment or strenuous physical activity) then refilling on those essential elements is just as important as the actual fluid that is lost. Most people in their everyday life have zero need for a water with electrolytes.
I had an ex-friend who only drank this water because she thought normal water was the causebof her headaches. Honey, maybe fix the vodka addiction first.
I cannot believe how many bottles and cans my neighbors go through every week! My husband refill our containers over and over again.
If the water is so smart then why is it trapped in a bottle?
Ba-dum-tchsssssss!
