Treacherous Canyons outside of Escalante - Hayduke Trail Thru Hike 8

- The Hayduke Trail is an 850 mile hike across Utah, involving some very difficult route finding, rock climbing, long water carries upwards of 35 miles, and all while passing through some extremely remote areas! In this particular section we are hiking away from the town of Escalante off to the west, near Coyote Gulch and Spooky Slot Canyon. Going up Fifty Mile Mountain and entering some of the most unknown areas in the entire United States.

We hitch hiked into Escalante to get more food and supplies, and then back down Hole in the Rock Road to get back to where we left our trail off. Escalante is the greatest town along this entire trail, and I think it's one of the best trail towns along any long distance trail I have ever done! The Pacific Crest Trail or Appalachian Trail included, the town of Escalante has them all beat and is very much so worthy of a zero day or rest day.
We had just completed Coyote Gulch and are now heading west into what we hear is the largest expanse in the United States which does not have a road! We likely won't see a single other person for days on end out there, or more than 80 miles. Not many have ever gone through this area on foot aside from Hayduke Thru Hikers. This would be Fifty Mile Mountain on the Kaiparowits Plateau, a tall ridge that extends north and south from Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Recreational Area all the way north to Escalante.
This being one of the highest points on the Hayduke our first night was cold, well below freezing. Naturally our second day down into Monday Canyon, Rogers Canyon, and Navajo Canyon would involve a 36 mile water carry along with some really difficult navigation and scambling.
Monday canyon is short at around 8 miles in length, but it is by far one of the most notorious sections of this entire trail (next to Saddle Canyon and the Tapeats River.) A lot of hikers hear horror stories, and skip this section all together, just because of Monday Canyon. I think the 8 miles took us somewhere around six hours to get through, and certainly all of the challenges lived up to the hype. Large boulders to climb up, under, or around. Bushwhacking in between those boulders. No water forever, and somehow to add on to all of this, cows who are also stuck in this remote location, and unhappy to see people.
The worst part of this is the water carry, at 36 miles long it is the longest stretch on this hike where we will not see any water. What makes this extra maddening is that you do see water! Constantly throughout these canyons there is tons of water. All of it however is undrinkable. The water contains magnesium sulfate, and will make you very sick. The guidebook said it like this, 'any hiker who chooses to drink from these canyons... will run out of toilet paper very quickly.'
The challenges in these canyons turned out to be tedious and slow, but overall I enjoyed.

I think if there were any section of the Hayduke to maybe find different routes it might be this one 😅 still, this feels quintessential. This is what I thought the Hayduke would be like the entire way
Loving the style of these videos so much. The vlogging interludes are great.
5:19 That's love right there. Great video. Cheers!
sorry jupe, sprocket is the star of this channel now.
Wow! You guys really know what you’re doing, I am just loving these videos! Thanks for putting the extra time and effort in to record this truly epic trek!
loved the good vibes in this one!
Wow, not even half way done and you've seen a lot. Very interesting trail. Looking forward to the next video.
This video rocks, overall atmosphere is just amazing man! Bravo👏👏
Great hike! Thanks for posting.
Respect to you both for completing this section, it looks challenging. It must take a lot of patience and concentration to safely get through. It would be great to hear about how you both keep clear heads when the obstacles keep coming.
Happy Labor Day Sprockets and Jupiter! That's some crazy bouldering! Congratulations on reaching the halfway point, be safe out there!
Your videos are so good. Been watching them for years. Happy hiking
I'm really enjoying your videos. Also your take on and attitude towards the harder, less travelled trails. It's a nice change from people complaining about "not enough signs" on the CDT.
Do... people complain about that on the CDT? Generally curious. It's known as the hardest of the 'big three' and am surprised
@@JupiterHikes I have heard it. I believe it was from someone who experience only included the AT.
Not that you're going to do this section again, but last year Jamal Green did what could be a Hayduke alt as part of his Grand Escalante Loop. He went up to Mudholes Spring as usual, but then followed the ridge out to Mudholes Point and all the way down into Rogers Canyon. Rim walking for miles, and it looked super scenic.
Hey Jupiter! Your Hayduke trek with Sprocket looks like an incredible journey! Thank you for your beautiful and informative videos! I was fortunate to meet and briefly hike with you on the CT, after Spring Creek Pass (near Lake City) this past summer. We talked about birds and you asked if I knew the name of the common ground feeding bird that flashes its white tail feathers in flight.. I couldn't think of the name that moment, but later recalled it to maybe be a Dark-Eyed Junco (in sparrow family). You may have already figured that out yourself.
Nice to hike with you for a bit and no I never did figure it out! Still to this day I only ever see them from behind as they are fleeing from me!!
That was a super interesting route. Certainly not boring.
My favorite video of the week!
Love what you’re doing, man. Quick tip: consider switching from plastic water bottles to ultralight metal ones like titanium. I had a friend's uncle who got stomach cancer. His oncologist said it was from reusing the same plastic bottle for too long. If you stick with plastic, just avoid the sun and don’t reuse them on multiple trips. Stay safe out there.
Yowza! That was a tough section! Thanks for sharing.
I’d like to hear more from Sprocket as well. Thanks.
Loved that guys, real challenges, but you overcame with confidence. I love this part of Utah too. I've hiked some smaller trails during my previous visits from the UK. Sprocket is doing well, doesn't say much though ? Is she enjoying it as much as you ?
Great hike ! Thanks
Back to my 120mi hike w/ no water…what are your thoughts about pulling a small, as light weight as I can possibly find, snow/sand sled to help carry the water & maybe some gear? I’ve also got 2 water channels I have to cross. I’ve got to pack out a super light weight raft/pack-raft to help cross the channels. It appears the channels are too far & too deep to wade across. The last 1 which creates the island, “S. Padre Island. The adventure just sounds like so much fun! Hike 120mi down Padre Island & S. Padre Island to end w/ a nice hotel room & a margarita on the beach to celebrate the accomplishment!!
A lot of "Monday's" are like that.😉
👍🐿👍awesome
Magnesium Sulfate = Epsom Salt = strong laxative!
Did you switch to an alpha direct hoodie? I just ordered another peloton last night while they were on sale in a larger size lol
Would this be possible to do as a section hike? Looks like fun. Don't think my wife would enjoy it though 😋
If you have two vehicles, you could stage one on Hole in the Rock Rd. and one on Cottonwood Canyon Rd.
To do Hayduke trail you need seriously hiking experience, it's not for tourists...🤔
is there any way you could tell me what shorts sprocket has on in this video? they seem ideal. i'd love to know more about her whole setup! thanks so much for making these videos
They are some of my old shorts which I got at a thrift store! So nothing specific. Just mens running shorts a size larger than she normally wears
@@JupiterHikes thank you for answering! still helpful :)
Wirepass/Buckskin Gulch Slot Canyon? Hiked it in June…
Those are in a section coming up!
@@JupiterHikes… Nice!!! It was AMAZING…
