I had to stop this at 4.23 because I had such a deep physical reaction. "If a pakeha on the street walked towards us on the street we stepped aside" and the context of this...I am so ashamed of so much of the history...will keep watching this thoroughly interesting korero.
E noho, me whakarongo ki te whakaaro mo te korero e tama. Your comment is laughable in the obvious facts that you listened to this with closed ears, and horse blinkers on. That Tangata Whenua brokered peace between iwi through marriage and other strategies before war shows that we were connected through whakapapa, and if whakapapa doesn't constitute a "nation" then your education has failed.
- “the thought that Maori were ‘a’ nation is laughable” Yes. I wouldn’t say laughable, but I would agree in your underlying notion that, yes, Maori were not ‘a’ nation. - “each iwi was its own nation” Yes, this would be more accurate. “Iwi” no. During this time, only hapū was used to describe each collective/ community within our culture. This can be seen in the conflict between Ngati Hine (sub tribe) and Nga Puhi (main tribe) regarding our settlement. All the above being said, based on my understanding of the podcast. Maori have suffered under British rule, and continue to suffer today. I suppose the question would be whether Maori would suffer less if Maori governed our own, as agreed to in the treaty…. Mauri Ora
8.02 Just paused to say much I liked the hearing about the 1% South American, and also the piece about the science knowledge, and the kiore taken on the waka. Wow. I am clearly very ignorant. Why am I so old and just starting very recently to hear about the science and the intricate knowledge of nature. My ignorance is shameful.
Beautiful Korero

Can you explain how Whale music can save Kauri & who got the $4million dollars?
The thought that Maori were a nation before is laughable.
More accurately would be saying that each Iwi was its own nation.
The Thought of Colonial immigrants proclaim themselves as New Zealanders is diabolical.
