Man this is such a random comment but I found your channel from your retrotink4k comparisons and ended up watching them all for the whole duration while I did gamedev work in the background. Then today I got bored and thought I would try emulation on the Series X, googled guides, this came up and about 20 mins into the video I thought "this dude sounds familiar", checked the name and it realised it was you. That xbox usb app is a must. Just installs retro arch settings right away. Easier to do than any other game console. Every system should do this. Just pay a fee and be done with it. Instead of jailbreak.

Can you show how to manually add thumbnails to the games please? I have a list of thumbnails that I placed in the retroarch folder in thumbnails and the worked (for the most part) when I was using retail but now on dev mode none of the thumbnails I have (E folder) and the ones in the retroarch list (Q folder)are showing up in the thumbnail next to the games even when I manually scan them.

Amazing guide! I get to the step to lock the N64 cores. When you select the manage cores menu option a list of .dll files come up, and you select the mupen64plus_next_libretro.dll. For me that list isnt there i Have just for cores for consoles that comes up. What am I missing?

Hello! I'm able to get retroarch installed onto Dev mode, complete all the steps and even play a game or two for a little bit. But everytime I come back to dev mode to play again, my menu screen reverts back to the 8-bit style and my USB drive suddenly isn't readable anymore and I can no longer see the games within my folder on retroarch....it happens every single time.
any idea what the problem is? Is it possibly the USB?

Hello! I got all the way to the following step in your guide 20:06 , but once I reached this point my "manage cores" page only shows an "Install or Manage a Core" option, so it appears that for some reason I don't have any cores downloaded by default like the way your guide shows. I went to "online updater" and tried to manually download cores, but I get an error that says: "failed to install core XXX". Any recommendations on what I could do next to get cores successfully installed on retroarch?

I essentially just restarted everything over from scratch and was able to get it to work by having mostly everything downloaded to my Xbox's internal storage except for Roms and Bios which I had on a thumb drive. For some reason doing it that way got the core downloading option to work

I've set this up a few times now due to updates, and the Directory setup section always goes a bit too fast, where I need to set the speed to 0.25x. I wrote down which directories get changed and what the values are in the video so it can be easily referenced in the future - if they aren't listed, they weren't changed as far as the video goes!

Assets - E:\RetroArch\assets
Thumbnails - E:\RetroArch\thumbnails
Configs (Now listed as Configuration Files) - E:\RetroArch\config
Core Info - E:\RetroArch\info

I've also seen recommendations to lock additional Angle cores in addition to Mupen64 as mentioned in the video. Instructions are as follows below.
Settings > Core > Manage Cores > Lock and Backup the following:
Nintendo - Nintendo 64 (Mupen64Plus-Next)
Nintendo - Nintendo 64 (ParaLLEI N64)
Sega - Saturn (YabaSanshiro)
I'm including Mupen64 for completion's sake and future reference. Personally speaking, I don't know if these additional cores are still necessary to lock and backup, but I'm just bringing this recommendation forward here as I've seen it discussed and referenced to add to the setup tips of my original post.

I was satisfied with my older build of Retroarch(that I installed with the help of your video) but I’m going to have to reinstall because after Safe Exiting back to retail mode, I got an E200 error and had to factory reset. Even though I pressed the button to keep all games and apps, My Retroarch, safe exit and everything I had in Dev mode had been wiped out. So I’m starting from scratch. Has anyone else here had this problem? How can I prevent this in the future? My wife and brother also experienced this same issue on their respective Xboxes, so we’re all going through the same recovery process.

Hello David, I am not very familiar or knowledgeable with the xbox but I faced this E200 issue aswell while exiting with safe exit. The problem that is probably occuring is that you did not have enough free space on the console (that was the issue for me, i had to delete all and start from scratch). I hope you managed to find the source of the problem.

Registration into the partner program always fails when processing payment. I tried two different microsoft accounts and two different credit cards on each. Always gives a "something went wrong, please try again later" error. Contacting Microsoft about the issue is impossible as well, support line (phone) is always a bot who ends up disconnecting the call.

If you're getting error code 400 when trying to add your Xbox console to the developer console list, typically waiting about 2 weeks and then trying again should work - that's how I solved it.

After following this guide, I'm running into an issue with the N64 cores. Trying to boot any N64 game gives me a "failed to open libretro core" error, but as far as I can tell, every other core (including those requiring BIOS files) are working fine. After backing up Parallel, I also updated that core just in case that solved it, but it did not. Any advice on what might have gone wrong with N64 specifically?

Do you know if there is a way to force the system to stay in dev mode and shutdown normally? How it works on mine is if I click shutdown, it reboots and I have to leave dev mode, let console reboot, then shutdown. I would like to use my 2nd console as an exclusive retroarch console but don't see a way to stop it from needing to kick back to retail every time. I can't access the xbox device portal to get remote access. everytime I enter the url for the xbox device portal page, it says the webpage isn't secure but when i click advanced, there is no continue button. I tried this on other search engines and messed with the dev setting...the website settings...network settings on my pc and xbox but i still can't get in.

Got issues with this on my series s. It only detects some of my roms. The ones that it detects are the only ones that work. Trying to run the others manually dont work. Its weird because the exact same hard drive plugged into the series x everything works normally.

Probably a silly question, but how do you update to a newer version of RetroArch on the Series X? Mine says 1.10. when i see in another video (PS2 Emulation setup) it shows your running 1.16

Been looking on forums for an answer but haven’t found anything. I did the install and none of the cores I downloaded load. Every one says “failed to open Libretro core”. This worked perfectly on retail and the dev mode before that.

My file system is completely empty aside from the very specific folder for retroarch. Every other disk scan i do crashes. I have tried app and game for the setting on the program. What's the point of having all of that Dev Mode storage on XBOX One if I can't point retroarch to it? I'm limited to the number of games I can put on it to the default retroarch directory that only has around 5GB alloted.

Thanks for the guide. I am using his on an Xbox one S and when I reach the core locking for mbupen stage I do not have the same core list as you and that core does not appear. The names that appear are of consoles. Any suggestion? Many thanks 🙏

Thank for the time in making this. Really helpful! I have a quick question. I'm looking at getting a WD Black 5TB P10 external HDD for this, but I don't have a PC for formatting. Doesn't the Series S "format for media" option do the same thing? And can I use it to put other downloaded movies/series on still?
