    I get what you are saying Nick, I really do and it is shitty that your tools get nicked but banning the sale of second hand tools isn’t really the answer, especially not for diyers or people starting out. Not everyone can afford a brand new tool, all they can afford is some shitty mitre saw or drill that will get the job done. Also, what does a tradesman do when he decides to wind up his business or retire and has thousands worth of tools to sell. Plus you could extend that to any business - can’t sell car parts in case they are stolen, bikes, etc…
    The problem is with the Police and the law. UA-camr with a camera outside a police station and there’s 10 of them out at him yet they do nothing for the real crimes that are affecting peoples lives. This is what happens though when there is no competition…

    I don’t think banning the sale of second hand tools would work. It wouldn’t necessarily deter people from stealing them as can still sell on black market etc for drugs and so on. What about other things like cars/bikes which get stolen too? Are we going to stop buying anything second hand just because it might be stolen? It’s already illegal to knowingly sell stolen goods. What about house clearances and people who legitimately want to sell their own tools? Just a thought.

    Possibly helpful but boring...
    Each time you buy tools, take a copy of the invoice. One copy goes to the accountant/bookeeper/records and the second can be placed into a "tools file".
    This way you don't have the aggravation of spending hours going through tax records when you are megger (!) fed up trying to find them all, ensuring the process is far easier and quicker. Furthermore if you are going to sell YOUR OWN TOOLS, you can show/give a copy of the original receipt quickly and easily.
    Sorry I said it was boring !
    Thank you Nick. Keep well....

    The only problem I have with tool insurance is that the value of the tools is depreciated so quickly. I do a lot of different stuff, so I own a lot of different tools, which I don't use daily. Which means that a tool that's three years old, might have only been used for a couple of days in total and be more or less brand spanking new. Or a machine that's over 20 years old, but would still sell for a couple of thousand euros (and hence would cost that kind of money to replace) would only get me scrap value if it would end up in a fire. Which means I'm still going to be out of a lot of money if my stuff would get stolen or damaged. I'd gladly pay a bit more and at least get the money back that I need to replace everything with something that's comparable in quality/age than paying a lower monthly fee and still have to worry if I can build my business back up should something like that happen.

    My problem with the sale of used power tool is people like myself who upgrade every few years what do I do just bin £100s of gear or like when I started with Ryobi bits and then moved over to DeWalt I had £1000 worth of Ryobi gear and I can see eventually I may step up to Milwaukee but if I can sell the DeWalt gear I could never justify the £10000 step up when it comes to a total upgrade. I think rules need to change and 100% for car boots but stuff like eBay and Facebook marketplace they need to be changed and monitored heavily.

    Worked at one place, we got broken into, Director came down and gave me a tool catalogue, said pick tools you want for the company and then date and sign the sheets and we will get them of insurance, even if we didnt have them to start with, i refused its FRAUD, from then on life was difficult there, so i left quickly.
    Also top tip, buy a newspaper and place all tools one by one with original receipt for expensive stuff, clearly showing newspaper date and tool receipt,or just the tool if you dont have a receipt, showing tool seriel number, and down load to a disc or stick x 2, 1 for your records and 1 for the insurance should you need to make a claim, proves you owned them on that date of newspaper.

    There is no way to stop the stealing. Regardless what objects, if they are valuable they will get stolen! According to this philosophy we should ban all sales of used items regardless of the type because it’s not fair to ban just on specific type! Why not use Bluetooth tags and make stolen tools database which would help a lot. Also promote this database for used tools buying process. Like we have it with cars and basic check!

      I agree that people being banned from genuinely selling their own tools is not an ideal solution. There are many people who either retire, upgrade, change brand Etc who sell their tools on. Then there’s those in need on lower incomes like apprentices or those recovering from a theft of their own. There should either be some sort of serial number register that manufacturers have to adhere to or another way of permanently marking up tools so it’s hard for those markings to be removed.

    • @Mr.MFuckingYTchangedmyname
      @Mr.MFuckingYTchangedmyname 4 місяці тому

      You are not understanding the problem. It's not to stop the car booter who is getting rid of all his old tools, perhaps clearing his dead Dad's shed. It's to stop the guys who turn up to car boot sales with a van FULL of used power tools. They aren't buying them cheap, refurbing and flipping them, they are flogging off stolen goods, simple as that and it's going on at an industrial scale - go to a car boot sale this weekend and see for yourself.
      If you have a few old tools, there shouldn't be an issue selling them, correct. If they are not-so-old, and you can maybe show the original purchase receipts (and will give your details to anyone buying them from you, just in case, down the line, Mr Plod suspects they have been stolen), or have registered them online when you bought them etc, making them traceable, there shouldn't be an issue selling them.
      However, if you only speak, say oooh, Bulgarian, and rock up to a carboot sale you've never been to before, with 4 other geezers, in van with foreign plates, and have 10 x DeWalt Impact drivers, same model, of varying age and condition, (along with 15 x Hammer drills, 7 x Grinders, 12 x Multi-tools, 8 x chopsaws, a ton of spare batteries, etc etc, you get the picture) - there very much SHOULD be an issue being able to sell them for cash at a carboot sale.
      Of course, if we all stopped buying stuff from the swarthy fellows in the vans, it might slow the market and they'd go back to taking overhead railway cable. We should stand together and resist buying tools which we know are being sold for way less than we'd think they were worth
      "Hang on, that blokes got a nice Hilti in there and he only wants £50 cash. Sod it, someone else will only buy it, won't they, and I could really do with one. Where's my wallet? Just this once..."
      How many of you wouldn't have just a quick peep and see what stock they had? We all could do with a cheap back-up for home, just in case, right?
      THAT is as much the problem as the scrotes who steal and fence the stuff.

    Every time I am reminded about 'shaving sockets' and putting the light switch on the outside of the bathroom, I think about the fact that electric showers are also common in Britain, and I become confused. 😂

    • @Cablesmith
      @Cablesmith 4 місяці тому

      Shaver sockets can go in the bathroom because they have an isolation transformer inside so whatever you plug in is separated from a direct mains connection.
      Light switches can go in under certain circumstances, but typically just become common to put them outside.
      Showers can because they are double insulated, have no metal parts that could become live.
      Really it’s just sockets that can’t because you could put a radio for eg, on the edge of your bath while your in it. However if the socket is 2.5M away from a bath, it can go in the bathroom.

    • @chaseohara4781
      @chaseohara4781 4 місяці тому +1

      @@Cablesmith Thanks for clarifying! But yes, I was aware of all of the reasons.
      It's just funny because the rest of the world considers putting a GFCI (RCD) on an outlet in the bathroom enough to mediate the safety issues. No need to have a special socket. In fact, generally it's assumed that people will just run an extension cord to use regular appliances in a bathroom otherwise, so in most North American jurisdictions it's Required to have a GFCI protected outlet within a short distance of the sink to account for that.
      Anyways, the point I was making was that an electric shower, even if it is installed correctly, should be about the same level of risk as an outlet that's properly protected. But often they're not properly installed, which gives them Way more potential for danger than an outlet on the wall. Just such an interesting juxtaposition to me. What's allowed versus what's not allowed and the seemingly counterintuitive reasoning behind it.

    Will they not just sell the tools online? Like eBay list them and sell them in another country? I suppose it make it more difficult to sell, which would be a plus, but what about people who are selling their old tools? And will anyone actually stop selling at sales, etc.? It's an interesting argument anyways.
