  • Hello UA-camrs! This video covers my Advanced Slow Motorcycle Riding Skills Practice Session #3. In attendance were 5 Harley Davidson's, 2 Indians and 1 Honda Goldwing.
We had two riders (Roy and Mario) travel 2.5 hours to get to this practice session. Everyone left a little bit better at slow motorcycle riding skills than they arrived with and that's what's most important. We also had fun! Everyone at this practice session is well on their way to being the boss of their motorcycles!
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
    PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
    What does PRELOAD mean?
    PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

This was exciting for me to watch. I didn’t realize there were motorcycles without a clutch! Now I know for sure everything you are teaching can be done on my little 170cc scooter! I’m completely new at riding and I’m practicing session one and two. When I first went out on my brand new scooter I was told to keep my hand OFF the brake and learn how to control the throttle. Well. That was a complete catastrophe! I couldn’t even ride straight without lurching about. I felt like I was never going to be able to ride and even thought I’d have to sell the scooter. I tried preload and it was heaven to me! Thanks so much. I have a longgggg way to go but with your videos I’m encouraged.

    Hi Robert,
I enjoy watching your video series. I own 3 Harleys. A Road Glide Ultra and two Fat Boys. I have a natural fear of leaning, but getting better at every practice. I have gotten down to a 19-foot radius on my new Fat Boy, but have only gotten down to 24-foot radius on my Road Glide. I wish I lived closer to your Georgia location because I would attend your class in a flash. I like your step-by-step method of indoctrination and desensitization to slow speed riding. I am sending you a video of me riding my Road Glide and making 24 foot circles. It is rare that I can get down to 24 feet, but when I do, I feel proud of myself. But, I want to get down to 18-feet with my Road Glide, like you and others in your class. Because I still have that fear, I rate my slow speed riding at a 5 or less.

I ran across your channel the beginning of winter (florida winter aka spring) and I gotta say listening and following along i took out my victory magnum and said its time... I cam from riding sportbikes and moved over to this big boy and theres a HUGE difference in riding a cruiser to a sport/sport touring motorcycle especially when it comes to turning. I practiced exactly what you were doing with the guys for about 3 hours... when i started i was a level 1.5, now i feel like a good level 5.25 and improving. I recommended it to my buddy who i ride with who shortly after we went on a ride and i saw that duck walk when we got to the slower section and was killing that front brake....we pulled off in a parking lot and i started schooling him on preloading and using that rear brake .I had him watch me and mimic me and i must say his slow riding looked alot better today. Picture's coming soon, ill shoot them over to your email. Ill try to get some video as well so you can help correct anything you see that we may not be doing just right. I appreciate you for what you are teaching. Just as Mike said below, this is more informational than the MSF classes that I went to.
One thing I would like you to touch on is tar snakes and uneven pavement, the huge ones that change your direction and make you get squirrely at some point if you havent already. Recovering from those can be instrumental, especially on the highway when ur running 60+ and encounter that immediate shift.

Your Comment about Left Turns Being easier, Here is our Theory.
Every week when we train a new batch of students to ride as beginners. I write on my hand a prediction and put my glove on before we begin training. Then I reveal my prediction after the exercise, asking, "which direction was harder to turn". So we immediately have a new conversation why this is! Here is our conclusion.
Both Breaks and the throttle are on the Right. This makes a decision to giving up your breaks to put a foot down or hand down and relinquishing control, this mentally influences your confidence and increases the feeling of vulnerability making right hand turns. Although this "is" usually the case, we still see about 10% of new riders to have no preference and it doesn't seem to matter if the rider is Left or Right Handed.

I had 12 on my softail fatboy but i am not that big (5'7" 135lbs) so they were at the limits of my comfort level. I have 12 on my street glide also but i don't have to fight the wind, better but my hands are at shoulder level, a tad high. pushup level is the best position.

I started with a Bicycle to get my balance back and I rode the bike till I was really sure I could do it. From when I had the stroke. I got a used 94 fxr Harley and I traded that in for a new ultra which I had for my favorite bike which Is a street glide special. It’s a 2015 and I have everything on that bike so I one with that bike. I feel I’m about 90% back to the way I rode before my stroke. About 6 months a go a young biker came up to me at a light and said I was watching you and I was very impressed at your riding for an old guy. I’m 70 years old now.
