One of the best videos I've seen on growing strawberries. What people would really love to see is follow up videos on all the awesome growth and all of the strawberries you got to pick and eat.
Yeeeeees please, that would be great. Only a few do the follow ups and these follow up videos are exactly what I need. So when there are new problems we see how to follow up on them
I agree! That would be fantastic
Thank you! So many gardeners just talk about what to do, but I really appreciate you showing us. I had to admit, I was freaking out a little when you were pulling out those plants! But it all worked out. I wouldn't have attempted it- I didn't realize how small their roots are or how resilient they can be!
I just took some out of my pot because it looked so easy! Not! It’s not easy! The roots were HUGE and I ripped half of them so hopefully it will survive
@@parrotsandmore7446 How did they do?
I often add a fine mesh screen or a piece of nylon stocking at each opening of my strawberry planter to help keep the soil from eroding and it works great. Roots can still get through either material but soil not so much😁
I very much appreciate your relaxed style of teaching! This is my first year planting fruit and your clear and concise advice is just what I was searching for. Thank you very much!
Hello, it's Deb here. This is the third video I have watched on strawberries. I picked up my strawberry slips or roots or whatever they are called they don't have green growing yet, they are starting to grow in my refrigerator. I will be planting them tomorrow which is perfect timing for finding your video. That was the reason I went on the hunt because I had no idea that you could plant strawberries in a pot like this. I think I had seen some but you see the plants or so big they covered the pot. You could not tell what was underneath them creating the structure. I had a strawberry pot several years ago but it broke right down the middle. I thought about using a 5 gallon bucket and drilling holes in it similar to a strawberry pot. Which I think I might do but I also have a long window box planter that I would like to try since I already have it and would have to go shopping for a 5-gallon bucket. This was the most informative video that I have seen tonight and now I know how I'm going to plant my strawberries. Thanks for the video take care and God bless Deb
Right on Deb. Strawberries actually have very very shallow root systems. They don't need much soil to grow at all. It's why pots like that work for them. Odd that you didn't see green growth at that time of year. My strawberries have maybe a 6-8 week window max where they aren't showing any foliage growth. Happy growing!
Hello Charles , I watch this video and I plant 6 strawberry plants with my grandson and I talk with him about u , him and I have so much fun , I am just doing little , but I love to do garden and learned from like u , it so helpful . Thank u so much and keep up with good work
Hello Ila Patel,
This was the most inspirational thing anyone has wrote me all week-- perhaps this whole year! I am working on writing a book to summarize many of the skills I have learned from my parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and University with the hopes of having something tangible that can be passed down through the generations. So glad that you are sharing a skill and a passion that we both will be remembered for many, many years! So glad you took the time to write me!!! Thank you so much!!! :-)
Charles
Thank you so much. I have had strawberries in raised beds for over three yrs, I have to refill the beds and need to clean it out. I didn’t know how to do it until I saw your video.. many thanks
I thought of another easy way to propagate strawberry! Locate a kiddie pool 36"-48" make some 1/4"drain holes and fill with some good drainage soil and make a mound to plant 3-4 plants in there it will make tons of runners and when pups are developed you can replant however you want I have shared this with a couple of others!😉
I just got one of these pots and I’m so excited to add strawberries to my patio garden this year! Thank you! So much helpful info! ✨✨
Love your videos! So basic and easy to follow your methods! Thank you!
Oh Charles, I love your videos, they are so informative, I really enjoy and always learn something new, thanks
Such a simple solution when you’re shown it!
awesome video. one of the only ones that shows you how to rejuvenate old strawberry plants that are in containers.
I really enjoy and always learn something new, thanks
Excellent video with understandable and clear visual instructions👏🏻
Hi Charles;
I really loved your video. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge, you are very informative. I will be definitely rewatching to retain all the great information from your video. I planted two 5 gallon buckets of strawberries with 1 3/4 inch holes zigzagging from each other. 20 holes on each bucket. One hole (same size) in center of one of the 5 gallon bucket to put pvc piping through the top bucket to go over the bottom bucket, some staggered drill holes through the pvc pipe and I take a hose and fill the pipe with water..that way you use less water and less good organic soil and fertilizer. I plant mine the same way you plant yours in your strawberry planters except your going around the pvc pipe in the middle of the buckets. My first year planting strawberries in buckets. I wasn't sure how to prune and what to do with the runners. Again thank you for sharing!
Thank you your great tips!!!
Great video!
Thank you. Loved watching that and learning
Thanks so much I love strawberries and had no information on growing them. I just bought them and a strawberry pot and now with your step by step video I'm ready for my first time planting. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this useful information
Excellent video
another great video. Thank you Charles!!!
Thank you for the compliment Monica! Glad you liked it! :-)
Charles
Very informative. I've been wanting to grow some fruit on my deck or indoors without using any harmful chemicals but didnt know where to start.
Very good video a lot of knowledge
Look forward to investing in a 🍓 pot this spring and trying to grow berries. Thanks for the video, it taught me a lot. Happy planting!
Its my first year to plant strawberries. Im still a beginner at gardening and learning a lot from youtube. Your video is very informative. Wish me luck with my strawberries.
Thanks. Great info!
Ty for this video .gave me a better understanding
Thank you so much for sharing your experience!😃👍🏻Subscribed! Like it!😁👍🏻
Thank you so much lovely info
you have some great ideas there buddy. lifting the base with some supports is a great way to prevent sogginess under the pots. Thanks!
Great video. Very clear and easy to follow.
Thank you Funk Republik! Keep me posted on your gardening successes! :-)
Charles
IV Organic I'm growing strawberries from seeds. It is challenging because we hv tropical weather. The plants are tryin to flower because I saw two pitiful flowers. I hope they will give me fruits. It's the "temptation" variety. :)
Good morning Funk Republik,
Strawberries can be grown successfully in many climates. I grew them successfully in the tropical climate of Palm Beach, Florida for many years before returning back home to Los Angeles. If you have a few, plant some in full sun and others with part-shade (morning / early afternoon sun). Let me know how your strawberries perform! :-)
Charles
IV Organic good mornin Charles. Thanks for the advice. I am determine to hv my own strawberries.
Hi Charles, you are so inspirational. I have been gardening for over 30 years. Starting with a tomato seed to show my sons how they get the fruits and vegetables that they eat. We support our local farmers and seasonally go picking. This helped them understand more. You inspire me to be a better gardener. I share my veggie bounty with my neighbors, there is just so many I and my family can eat. You have taught me so much since starting to watch your channel. I am so lucky I found you in s search. I have strawberries in my garden, but they are not very sweet, how do I help them become big and sweet? Also they all bloom and fruit together. Is there a name I should look for that will give me strawberries from June to Sept in Staten Island, NY
You seem like such a sweet woman! It’s also nice to hear you appreciate Charles so much
Great video, I just learned so much so I subscribed to your channel. My strawberries developed brown edges around the leaves and stopped fruiting. I cleared everything out now I’m going to mulch the top. Thank you!
Great Video! Got my wife watching too. Hope you're safe out there in Cali...the videos I'm seeing of the flooding out there is horrendous.
Thank you Tyrell Samuels! :-) I am glad you are enjoying these videos!!! We got through the worst weather (I hope) and see a lot more sunny days ahead this week. I am getting ready to graft my fig trees, re-pot some fruit trees, and start planting my vegetable garden... A lot more great lessons coming soon! :-)
Charles
I am starting my second year of strawberries. This video clarifies what I should do. I hope I’m not too late. Thanks for the timely video! It set me on the right path and I hope I get some strawberries.
great video charles, thank you. much love and god,s peace be with you.
Hello Rafiqa11,
Great to hear from you! I am glad you enjoyed the video! :-)
Charles
oh, yesterday, i purchased a varigated pink lemonade semi-dwarf eureka tree. its so pretty, i even bought a 22" wine color pot, when i transplanted the tree, they just go together, its really an art piece, if you know what i mean. thanks again charles, much love and god,s peace be with you.
Hello Rafiqa11,
The variegated pink lemonade tree is a gorgeous "ornamental" looking tree that also provides wonderful tasting lemons! An excellent choice!!! Feel free to send me a picture at Info@IVOrganics.com :-)
Charles
My strawberries are also in need of a clean up too. Thanks for the video :)
My pleasure Ewanley101! :-)
Charles
I just wanted to say great video and that I have taken the young plants and using coke lemonade plastic bottles with a handful of sand to a bucket of growing peat..hung them on my my fence around the garden..in between I use others with lemon tree wax candles..which look great after dark hence utilizing my small garden..with strawberries..and I make my own organic bug sprays ..ty
Funny I seen this just this evening my son dropped off these two vey same strawberry planters yesterday ..said mom you got the green thumb I know you'll do something with them ..what a strange coincidence..thank you this is right on time
very good I have learned a lot
Clever marble tip!
I am having great success with my Roman strawberries! variety with pink flowers! I use a stack of clay pots, very large bottom one, then gradually smaller so that plants fit around base of upper pot. My strawberries are delicious and it's producing beautiful pups that I am starting in pots down below at base of planter. Fun! Thanks for all your help!
Hello Paula Shaia,
That is good to know that their is a pink flower variety of strawberries that is performing well for you! I have attempted to grow the Tristan variety (which also bloom pink) years ago and found the fruit quality to be inferior. Thank you for sharing your experience-- And I will be on the lookout for the Roman strawberry plant!
Charles :-)
@@IVOrganic they're still doing well and producing. One Mama plant is sending out babies like crazy!
Strawberries are actually very tasty!
Well informative....
Nice video. I learned a couple of tricks and thanks (i.e., using the wood chips). I grew strawberries for about 4 years. I'd recommend; if you are wanting to consume strawberries grow "Titan" and or "Bounty" (these are the big ones you find in the clear or green plastic containers found in the grocery stores. The Sequoia are the small- ornamental type found in the big box stores. The Seq. are small and probably just good for topping a cake to make it look nice. Where-as the Titan and Bounty are juicier and go long ways. As well; Save the runners... watch them and assist them into the ground as they're the children of the plant trying to keep the crop going/ living. Clip the runner once it's roots have set into the ground and then transfer it into a pot or well sunshine area. I learned a lesson to while growing them... strawberries need a full 12hours or direct sunlight... if not, you'll get half red and white ones. If they make it through the winter; Cover them with a vented clear plastic and remove when the the frost is gone. Again, great video and it has inspired me to start up again!
Hello Brian,
Thank you for the compliment, helpful tips & suggestions for finding those giant and delicious strawberries! That has been the preference for me and my family-- Even though I have learned from others that the smaller ones can often beat the flavors of the larger varieties of strawberries. Thank's again for the suggestions! Charles :-)
Very informative video! Do you recommend this same process for garden beds (removal of existing plants, cutting back roots, re-planting) or is picking off the dead leaves and runners and then working in some fresh soil and fertilizer sufficient? Thank you!! Love your channel.
Thanks
This video needs more publicity, it didn't get enough. Great job. Anyways I bought 20 bear root strawberries and I'm wondering if I should cut the flowers and the runners off so the plant can focus on producing roots. I Heard only cut the flowers but wouldn't it make sense to cut the runners too?
I also have pots like yours and I put a tomato plant on top. And put flowers around it. The tomato’s were small but delicious
Thanks for the informative video, first time hanging strawberries in my greenhouse...👍👍
once I cut a runner can I plant the tuber in the ground ?
I would also like to know how to clean out pots correctly to replant something new without any disease?
Wow just found your channel Sub’d Thanks for sharing! Would that spray for slugs and too much sun, be good for other veg/fruit plants also? 🙏🏼
Every pot of whatever gets coconut on the bottom and I don’t use stones. It’s all about water retention but not to much. But I do live in South Australia
Thank you so much, I will use this tips for my strawberries, the chipmunks eat them before i can harvest then
Most helpful for this novel gardener. I have messed up already, my raised beds are filled with topsoil. How can I work with this? Also...i got a bag of bone meal. Is this effective? Great video. Thanks!!
Coffee filters help reduce soil run off a wee bit too
Quick question. I recently purchased some new plants. I live in Oregon and it’s possible we could get another frost or two. Should I plant now or wait? Thanks.
Do strawberries grow well with pine straw? Thank you, Buffy
Very informative, thank you! Do you only apply the IV Organic spray once a year when planting, or should you apply every so often (I'm thinking of the sun-block element...although in the UK, I'd be surprised if I need it 🙄🤣)
Hi Charles, I don't know if you mentioned it and I didn't catch it, but which kind of strawberry did you decide was your favorite?
Hi! Did you take the pots in during the winter?
Thanks for doing a video on strawberries. I purchased some bare root strawberries about 7 months ago. Planted them, they did great, still doing great but not producing fruit now. I live in central Florida zone 9b. And not sure if I should leave them or replant. And I'm not sure when they are supposed to produce fruit in this climate. I just have them in a long planter. I have just been watching them to see what they are going to do next....lol. PS....I have enjoyed many of your videos I also have a passion for citrus.
Hey Susan, Strawberries are a bit of a cooler weather crop. You may find that the strawberries produce flowers (and thus fruit) in the colder months where you live.
Do you ever add homemade compost? I use MIG Trifecta plus. Is that enough fertilizer? I just got my organic starts and thanks to your tutorial I feel confident I can have beautiful and delicious strawberries this summer. God bless.
How often do you suggest spraying the leaves?
i wish i could buy that paint in australia. been watching your videos thanks for the info.
Hello Mona Montero,
We have been shipping direct to Australia 1-2x per week for the last 4-5 weeks! The shipping cost is $22.50 to Australia. If interested, please e-mail us at Info@IVOrganics.com on the steps to placing your order. Thank you for your interest! :-)
Charles
hi will let you know soon. we are currently going to fall and will not need it at the moment but i am really interested in buying it for my citrus as they just get burn here and get cooked in summer. thanks for the reply.
Sounds great Mona! :-)
Charles
Wow....
Where did you get those pot I. Like them for my garden
I just get one for my birthday and i am zo afraid to do something wrong,so thats why i like your video en tips.
I’m from Belgium 🇧🇪,i just want to know when can i eat te strawberrys.
Thx
I likke your world, love from indonesia
How do I treat botrytis in my first year strawberry raised bed? Do I need to remove the plants and start over? Would I need to treat the soil?
I'm newer to gardening, and haven't had much luck with strawberry plants. I now want to get a pot like what your showing. What do you do with the runners during the growing season? I'm over here in Pittsburgh where we have some pretty cold winters will strawberries make it through our winters here. Do you place those pots where the runners can root in the ground also? Your videos are great and very informative. Thanks in advance.
Strawberries will 100% grow in your area. They love the cold. The nurseries in your area should be selling the varieties most suited to your climate. They are the ultimate container plant for your patio or deck!
Everyone always talking about being ecological safe with peat moss but here in Canada we harvest less then is being naturally replaced every year so there's no harm
Hello Kootenay Ryan. That makes sense! Thank you for sharing! Charles :-)
I'd be really interested in reading that research as it is my understanding that the extraction of peat requires the removal of a bog’s living surface to reach the partially decomposed layers beneath. It grows at a mere sixteenth of an inch a year, and its mining removes layers that take centuries to develop.
Can I grow those in Arizona? It can get to 120F here for weeks... Will they survive with the full sun or should I find some shade?
I use essential oils at home for cleaning. Can I mix my own essential oils to protect the strawberry plants?
Wonderfull info you have passed over to virus thanks
How often do you fertilize them??
Does that IV Organics spray work on herbs? Last year we had a bunch of swallowtail butterflies eat up our parsley and dill. We loved seeing the butterflies but were disappointed that they ate up all of the herbs. lol 😂
Hi! I just discovered you :) ... I was thinking of using a PVC pipe with drilled holes in it, by placing it down the centre of my strawberry pot to water evenly and gently and also cover my pot at the top so that it doesn't get too much rain (we can get lots up here in Southern Ontario). What do you think? Also, can I just grow some of my s/b plants amongst my flower perennials? thank you Charles.
Hello Marianne,
Welcome to the IVOrganic UA-cam channel! :-) That is a great idea to add a PVC pipe through the center to more quickly and more evenly water the pot. If it rains a lot, just make sure you have a fast draining potting soil mix... Feel free to add more perlite, sand, etc, that will help the water pass and not rot or drown the root system. Also, mixing up a variety of plants is a good idea to control the spread of disease and pests... however, make sure their is enough space for light to get to all the plants and that one variety that grows taller does not shade a lower growing desirable plant. Keep me posted on your growing successes! Charles :-)
thanks so much for the quick response Charles. There's a whole lot of medicinal plants and strawberries I need to find space for. The veggies will be going in grow bags and containers since we have too much decking. I hope to be able to send you a video or photos of what I've done :)
Please keep me posted Marianne! I'd love to see a video of your garden!!! Please keep me posted! Charles :-)
Just put a coffee filter on the bottom... It will stop the soil and let the water pass!
A couple of us have found Kellogg raised bed/potting mix becomes hard and too compact once it is watered several times. Woiuld amendments like perlite and/or peat moss help that?
I use Kellogg products as well and I definitely add perlite to everything, even the potting mix. If not, like you said, it can get rather hard. But if you are generous with the perlite, its great stuff.
I have red mulch, should I put that on my strawberry soil? I just planted them. And I think they expired?...I don't know what that means anyway. If they do.
Why not still put a strawberry plant or two at the top coming out of the wood chips?
Hello Shlomo Goldman,
You could, however, I have noticed that the top of the container continues to settle and ideally serves the place most fertilizer is added, more soil added, and retopped with the wood chips. But, I will sometimes plant a few at the top to replace any dead plants in the pot pockets. Keep me posted on your strawberry planting successes! Charles :-)
You can also add hay
i have to repot my strawberry
At what time of the year would you replant ?
What do you think about a strawberry plant at top with mulch???
Did your old potting soil have sand in it???
Gloves? Getting your hands in the soil is half the fun!
I use a pvc pipe with holes in..
Dutchess Eberline Hello 👋 GREAT suggestion!!!
Charles 🌱👍
@@IVOrganic - Great idea if you want plastic leaching into your soil and food. PVC is anything but foodgrade plastic.
Is your water proof paint organic?
Hi Charles, I am so sorry about book comments , it si something for u and your family . Please don't be upset . I don't mean that way just joking . U sharing your knowledge with me that good enough so please don't mind
Hello Ila Patel,
It's my pleasure! :-)
Charles
Do you use anything to deter the slugs from eating the strawberries? That's the problem I'm having.
Hello Roberta,
Here is the link to one of my favorite products, when necessary, to control pests: www.homedepot.com/p/Monterey-1-lb-Sluggo-Plus-LG6575/202043634?MERCH=REC-_-PIPHorizontal1_rr-_-202043631-_-202043634-_-N Note, I may use this product only 1x or 2x per year... and only in the immediate vicinity of the plant(s) or food(s) I am trying to protect. The slugs are welcome in my garden as they eat a lot of the compost I have between my plants and turn into to waste that benefits all the plants in my garden. So my advise, is not to kill all the snails and slugs on your property-- Just spot treat using the product. Let me know how this product works for you! :-)
Charles
do you water the strawberries during winter
Good morning Mary,
It depends. If your winter is dry, as it is often here in Los Angeles, then yes. However, in the winter you may only need to water 1-2x per months due to the cooler and shorter light days. Keep me posted on your strawberry growing successes! Charles :-)
I had a planter box on the balcony that had strawberries in it last year along with a rather large spike grass plant. I ignored both all winter here in Seattle and everything died off. Well, the spike didn't die off but I got tired of it and took it out. That left nothing but what was strawberries. Well, I watered this spring and they have bounced back way larger than last year and putting out fruit on a north facing Seattle balcony (which is as dark as it gets).
I had a planter of strawberries indoors under lights but it got too hot one time and I thought they were dead. So, I took the bag back outside in January and now those have all come back WAY larger than last year.
Where can I buy those terra cotta planters?
Walmart

How is the lemon tree air layering doing
Hello Pablo,
So, I removed the Eureka Lemon air-layer back in September from the parent plant. By October/ November until now, it has been blooming an average of 5-10 flowers-- with little fruit that eventually fall off. I am hoping to plant shifts from wanting to flower and fruit, to gaining some growth in the upcoming springs months! I will start feeding the plant some higher in nitrogen organic fertilizers. Thank you for asking! I'll gladly send you a picture if you e-mail me at Info@IVOrganics.com Charles :-)

Hi. I'm in South Africa. For some reason I keep trying with strawberries and they keep dying :-( wasting so much money. I dont now what I'm doing wrong. The strawberry plants keep dying. I water alot and have made a good soil mix. But strawberries look dried out. I tried crate method and that made them die even faster this time around. Do you have any advice please? What am I doing wrong?
Also, thank you sooo much for your videos. I love them. They're so detailed and informative. Super awesome!
That's too bad Nuraan. I would think maybe either too hot, or poor soil conditions. Strawberries are pretty cold weather tolerant and do their best in a highly rich organic soil. Have you tried them in containers instead?

Hi Charles, I'm brand new to strawberry plants. I live in New Zealand. I planted in Winter had a great crop over summer and we are now in Autumn. My strawberry patch is in my garden not in a pot. Do I do the same thing, dig them out and chop off the roots/dead plants then re-plant them in the same soil?
G G did you ever find out what to do. I am In same position
Great Idea but would also benefit from a disc of cardboard under the mulch....
