  • Growing strawberries takes patience. If you have the patience stop the plant from fruiting the first year and to cut down all runners, years 2 through 4 will give you a tremendous yield of delicious home grown strawberries. Watering tips, mold issues are also discussed.

    I would randomly place 6 water bottle into the ground. So whenever I need to water the plants I'll just pour it in the water bottles that way it'll go straight into the ground instead of letting it flood the top to kill the berries! Get a few empty 2 litres bottles poke holes all around it(random places) with lil pins/sm.nail so it can leak out slowly! And that'll save you time watering. Just check on it every once in a while to fill it! Btw awesome garden bud congrats!

    I was diligent in cutting all the flowers and runners the first year and this spring my strawberries look amazingly healthy. I cant wait. I got a french variety and am soo excited to have my own fresh strawberries. I refuse to eat those nasty tasteless rocks they sell in the stores. It certainly looks like the effort paid off. This year I can start new plants from the runners to keep these going. Good tips here!

    I have strawberries overtaking my garden. There are more runners than the London marathon. I've been having to weed out strawberry plants from my spinach next door. Impressively strawberry plants have crossed the path of paving to start growing on the lawn. I get at least 3 good crops of fruit every year.

    In Taiwan, The runners start to boom in May when temperature getting hotter. Flowering booms in September when getting cooler. i. e., the runner grows fast in summer due to the temperature rises. So, simply apply shed to cool down, thus, slow down runners growing.

    • @thetoad7367

      Debbie Excell you can do but I would still lay some straw over the mulch where your strawberries will rest, the mulch is damp and can cause the fruit to rot. You can substitute the straw for anything that will protect your fruit from the floor but still provide some air circulation.

    in the Philippines we grow strawberry in our backyard planted in recycled bottled water, it grows and yield fruits. this way can easily transfer to a protected area during typhoon and flood. I think the idea is also applicable in some other places like in non tropic one.

      Ricardo Haßelbeck it does sound like a runner to me! Look up on the internet strawberry runner and see if it looks the same. I would suggest taking that runner off and letting the plant grow some more, as I took my runner off and it grew loads and is now sending out another runner!! If it’s a long stem coming out of the plant then it should be a runner. After the plant looks really big and full, keep the runner on and let it reproduce by pinning it into the soil where the leaves form. Take off all flowers too in the first year, to let it put all its energy into reproducing and growing bigger, and then let it flower and fruit in the second year. It seems like a waste, but you’ll end up with really nice fruit and loads more plants!!!

      I'm not sure about strawberries but often fruit grown from seed tastes very different from the original fruit. You might want to keep flowers this year to make sure your plants actually bare tasty berries. And sure, grow runners if you want.

    My own wild strawberries almost do not bloom and their leaves are rather pale.
    Did it need more fertilizer and to make the soil less alkaline?

    How long does a plant produce fruits? How do you keep slugs away from eating the berries?

      You can use many things. Fire ash. Grinded up Wood chips. Or just buy snail bait.

    If you have a runner that is like 2 feet long can you also cut it off and lay it somewhere on the ground so it grows by itself?

      I have my own row of strawberries from planted runners and I tried that sadly, it doesn't work because it needs the energy of the Mother Plant. They must root at least a few inches to be transplanted somewhere else to not get severe transplant shock. Hope that helped 😊

      Not so true . Most plants you cut a piece straight off and plant directly into the soil but not with strawberries they need the energy, nutrients and hormones from the mother plant to set roots. once it has set roots then you can cut it away from the mother plant. I think you will be lucky if the runners roots if you just cut them off the mother plant with no roots and lay them on the ground or in pots

    Do you continue to clip runners on the 2-3 year plants?

    • @dom150
      @dom150 3 роки тому

      No but if there's a bunch of runners yes because it will be no energy for the bigger runners and the runners will be weak

    • @dom150
      @dom150 3 роки тому

      For the second years I don't let more than 3 runners in one plant for 3rd years I don't let it grow more than 6 runners and for each runner single stem you'll find 3 runners in one stem I'd leave only 2 max because the 3 and so one would be weak
