  • The small non electric blacksmith shop is up and running. Still needs a few things and there will be lots of small improvements over the next year or so. But I thought it was time for a shop tour.

    I would never do metalsmithing as a hobby but it has definitely come in handy for some of my other projects and you have made it incredibly accessible to me

    I finally got my own shop set up a couple of weeks ago. It's about the size of my shower (to be fair, I have a really big shower) and there's no power, not even lights. I'm using hurricane lanterns for light and everything is hand tools, but it's enough for what I need to do. Glad to finally be able to forge at home though, and every single tool in my shop is something that I've forged myself. Lots more tongs to make though. Next year hopefully I'll break ground on the big shop that's going in my back yard.

    Good morning John, great video on the powerless shop. You've done a great job around there and set up a working shop that will be of use for years to come. Looks like you all are having nice weather around there . Stay safe and keep up the great videos. Fred.

    Thanks for sharing, John! This gives me some ideas for building a shop in my backyard, so I can work without having to worry as much about the weather as I do now.

    I just wanted to take a minute to thank you. I've finally got the time to commit to a new hobby and your videos are really helpful setting up my shop. I have a little girl fixing to start her apprentice program gold/silver smithing and she gave me a heads up about your channel. Thank you again! This metal loving family appreciates you! 🍻

    Great information in a short package, I like the fact that you have added a place for your wife to do a little in there, good to be able to do some things together sometimes. When will we be able to see a little bit of the stuff she does? I think the dying of the yarn and such could be interesting.
    We got a little snow here in Oklahoma last night, just a light dusting.

    Excellent shop tour. It looks like you have a real good start on a fully functional non electric shop. I am in the process of setting up my wood working shop after a move from Georgia to Florida and am facing a lot of the problems you talked about. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂.

    John,
    What about burying a stump or making a deep concrete pad to bolt your anvil stump or leg vice to?
    This way you can in a relatively quick manor, unbolt and move the anvil and it won’t be as permanent as a full buried base. You won’t have to remount the anvil either.

    • @BlackBearForgeII
      @BlackBearForgeII  6 місяців тому +1

      That would be an option, but more work than I want to go through for this initial setup.

      @@BlackBearForgeII of course! I was thinking longer term/eventualities, I have a concrete floor in my shop and have a some lags I can bolt my stump down with. I’m sure there will eventually be a day the chickens come home to roost…

    John, what is the minimum thickness of the plate for the coal piled around the forge? My first one had stainless sheet from countertops out of a restaurant, they warped and buckled so much, it's useless until I replace it.

      I would think about 1/8" There shouldn't be much heat outside the fire pot. Mine is 1/4" with a brick top around the cast iron pot.

    What are your plans for lighting the non electric shop?

    • @BlackBearForgeII
      @BlackBearForgeII  6 місяців тому

      Battery power for videos lighting, otherwise only work when the light from the sun is enough

    I wouldn't waste much time hanging a door on the non-electric shop. That looks to be a sizeable pneumonia hole as it is.
