Another very important point for beginners is that the anvil itself doesn't always need to be super heavy. You can make a lightweight anvil more useable by firmly attaching it to a heavy base. A couple hundred pounds of lumber, brick, or concrete is usually much much cheaper than an equal weight of steel. There's also the fact that you don't really need a heavy anvil unless you're ready to do some heavy forging. I've downgraded from my 125lb anvil to a 50lb steel block because it's easy to move around and I simply don't need so much weight for the projects I'm currently doing.

If I was just starting out, I'd grab one of those anvils quick. The prices I found on them $105 to $140 is less than I've seen similar-sized 'old' anvils going for at farm sales/auctions in Pa. Dutch Country. These used to be $25 to $75, but those days have been over for decades. For most of the work you're going to do, that little anvil will work nicely. That particular size is what the horse shoers used to use when they worked out of their pickup trucks and drove from job to job with their coal forges still burning. (Yeah, I'm old.) If I didn't already have a couple that size in my shop, I'd probably buy one, given it's price. Speaking of farm sales, about 3 years ago I went to one that had a 400 lb. 'old' anvil that was going to be sold. A pair of "I got more money than yous" of course bid it up beyond what any working man could justify paying for it. And then they kept bidding against each other because neither one wanted the other to have it. They got that thing up past $1,600!!! Strangely, I didn't have many bidding against me when I was paying a couple bucks each for "funny shaped" tongs, hardies, and other bottom and top tools. They were all after that anvil and didn't mind getting ripped off in what they paid for it. My thought was that if they were really blacksmiths, they'd have recognized those 'specialty' tools and knew how much work it would be for them to make them -- which made for not only a good buy, but damned near a steal.

Good morning John, thank you and Vivor for the great review of the Vivor Anvil today. It looks to be an answer to having an anvil for the smaller shop and the learning shop too. Stay safe around there and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Fred.
