However, I KNOW that save data transfers your horses over, meaning the game recognizes you have played BOTW. I think it would be cool if characters recognized you if you played BOTW.
Beedle likely knows, but has to pretend link is no different from any other customer. Link likely does not want too many people to know who he is. The stress and weight of expectation would return just like 100 years ago. Zelda definitely would agree the general public knew too much about him and this time took steps to limit the information that got out and only told those they trusted what really happened. This way link can actually retain some privacy and a life.
But to those people his presence is like a 2 minute conversation where he told them about Tarrey Town. Hudson and the people building the town would have a big presence in their lives, but your role is just some guy they met.

I’m still upset by the fact Kapson, the elderly zora who knew link from before the calamity (the one who you recruit to join Tarrey Town in breath of the wild), doesn’t remember you for some reason. Either this is a massive oversight, or the Zora are prone to dementia as well.

I actually found it to be mostly opposite. Im sure there are some who appear to forget but I've encountered dozens of people who either directly remember who link is or talk about link but simply don't recognise I'm him. Also the entire gerudo town obviously remembers him since that's why he's the only voe allowed inside.

Well, most of gerudo town doesn’t actually know him. Or rather they don’t recognize him since they would’ve only known him as his vai disguise. They just know he’s some dude who helped out riju in a major way and she granted him access to the town so they just gotta go along with it
Except you still had to sneak into gerudo town after Vah Naboris and the only ones who knew (or at least said something about it) were some of the guards, Riju, and the GSC members. This canononically means that the Gerudo are so devoted to outdated rules that they didn't let the dude who saved them from an ancient death machine AND retrieved their sacred artifact enter their town until Riju said sometime later "Oh yeah that weird vai was actually a voe named Link, we're buddies since he was close to my great-great grandma, he's cool, he's the first dude allowed in our town for years." And then they still make fun of you for not being tall and having huge abs. I love the Gerudo.
yeah, people just expect every single npc he has ever interacted with to recognize him. Obviously in the whole population some people are either gonna forget him, or remember what he did but forget his face. Henry Cavill once went unnoticed just because he had sunglasses on.
I got so pressed when the teacher was literally describing link in every way in the one hateno quest line, but never knew it was him 💀 edit: I worded this wrong: essentially, he said everything about Link but never stated it was really him in front of the students. I probably missed something since I’m racing to get to 100% update: I am at 80% 🥳
Funny thing is, Hudson in Tarrey Town remembers you… he doesn’t say much about it, but when you first talk to him, he does a customer spiel and then says something to the effect of “oh, it’s you”
You can literally just go straight to the final boss after getting the paraglider so most of the main quests are in fact skippable. You'd think TotK being a sequel would encourage people to play the first game.
More likely they're catering to players who didn't play the previous game at all. Side quests are eluded to, but even the most familiar characters (outside the new champions and certain Sheikah) reintroduce themselves so new players aren't left wondering who they are and what their relationship with Link is.

Would've been better to have a room of the schoolhouse dedicated to explaining where all the stuff from the previous game went since there's all that unused space, or maybe signs of dismantling work in the Hateno tech lab. There could have been a plaque in most towns hinting on past events. But I understand why they chose not to have all the Calamity stuff in there on top of the Upheaval map elements, and why they feel the need to reintroduce most of the characters.
I mean, Zelda would 100% tell everyone what happened. Link shouldve been a celebrity at the very least, though i guess people wouldn't know him by just looking at him (i think there are three gerudo women at a stable who corroborate this as they know about a hero that killed calamity ganon, but speculate that hes super tall and handsome) Its strange though because all of the sidequests are implied to be canon; the Tarrey Town -sons and the zora not remembering you is the most alarming to me
People do know of Link, the legendary swordsman of princess Zelda and slayer of Calamity Ganon, but Link looks so unassuming that no one thinks he is the hero. Imagine the surprise of the normal Hyrulean citizens when they see who that one guy who gave them 10 bugs actually is
The NPC Bolton for some reason doesn’t remember Link. He’s an NPC you interact with a lot in BoTW, and is the starting NPC for the eventual Tarrey Town construction. Tarrey Town is in ToTK, meaning buying the house in Hateno and mainly interacting with Bolson is a cannon event, but when you meet Bolson again in Luralin Village, he doesn’t seem to remember you.

I think people also need to realize that just because a character doesn't start their conversation with, "Oh hey Link, I remember you explicity. I love you man. I am making it known right now that I know you." doesn't mean the character completely forgot about Link.

Hudson remembers you along with Rhondson, all of the Sages, the child zora who was dating an adult hylian remembers you, also there is one woman in Zora's domain next to the inn who remembers you as a child
There is also Teba and his wife, Buliara, Purah, Robbie, Impa and probably a few more. Basically anyone who played a major role in the main quests in BOTW, plus Tulin.

didn't Hyrule Castle have a giant storm of malice swirling around it for 100 years, since Link died? he woke back up and there was still malice and monsters everywhere. i would have remembered the guy who saved Hyrule from Ganon after 100 years of chaos. although, some people may have been born and died within the 100 years Link was asleep, so it may have been normal to them ig
the malice storm around the castle didnt pop up untill shortly after the great platoe tower erupted if you begin the game again you can see its not there untill the great platoue tower cutscene

Bro lost all hundreds of his koroks in both BotW and TotK, and likely lost them all many other times. Him not recognizing Link, or just straight up forgetting about him, seems pretty on brand for him.
I assumed that they did this because botw was so open and it would be weirder to be recognised by someone you might've never talked to in botw than being forgotten by most non-story relevant characters. So in my head, totk plays in a reality where Link actually hurried up during the events of botw to save zelda, instead of doing a thousand little riddles and sidequests.
I’m honestly surprised that the Zora don't remember him (other than Sidon and Dorphean ofc). They literally remembered him for a hundred years, and then forgot in the span of eight months. That's messed up.
Keep in mind, a lot of the side quests you did in breath of the wild were not canon. Impa tells link to get his ass to the divine beasts as fast as possible. So he did just that. He basically did a speedrun
He presumably did at least get the Master Sword though. The rest of the memories, he could've potentially went around being reminded of stuff by Zelda and the other people who are old enough to know him, after having defeated Calamity Ganon and saved her.
I do believe that Link being the hero he is would've done most of the quests, but I could understand monster medals and koroks not being canon, stuff like that.
two side quest probably were canon though: link buying back his own house in hateno village, and supporting hudson's dream of starting his own construction company by building Terry town. The first one being the need to provide zelda a place to live after this quest is over, as its not like she can live in the castle anymore. The second being that by supporting Hudson in building up terry town link would be making it easier for Zelda to enact any of her plans on restoring all of hyrule.
Even the ones that are canon like Terry Town have people who should recognize Link acting like they don't. Specifically the Zora priest who previously very much knew him treats him like a random traveler. It's weird that only Hudson and Rhondson recognize him. And unless I'm remembering wrong for that to happen you have to have gotten the house built, but in totk it's mentioned Zelda had the house built instead. It just doesn't line up with BoTW and is either oversight or an alternate timeline.
Simpliest answer: link doesn't want a repeat of what happened 100 years ago where a majority of hyrule knew his face or name and the kind of knight he was. Expectant eyes and ears followed him everywhere. Zelda likely agreed with him that way too many knew who he was and decided to only tell those they really trusted. I think beedle knows but has to pretend link is any other customer. Link basically suffered from overexposure to the public and never wants to experience it again. The pressure was too much.
My headcannon is that link went around killing monsters and traveling as Zelda’s guard but didn’t talk to people he just made sure monsters were dead Zelda’s safe because with Zelda she’s easy to hide just put in a cloak but I don’t think link used any weapons aside from the master sword after getting it so it’s much harder to hide a blade when you need to be ready than hide a face when you dont
I don’t get why everyone says NOBODY remembers Link. There are a few NPCs that don’t remember him, but there are tons of them that do. Everyone in the main story remembers him and lots of people around the map do as well, it’s usually NPCs who have no relation to the main story who don’t remember, and that could be because the stuff that happened involving them wasn’t canon, or it could be because they didn’t have time to worry about all of that while they were making this amazing game
But it's weird, because Bolson doesn't remember Link, (Bolson helped link build his house in botw), and the house is there and fully built in tears of the kingdom Plus Tarrey Town exists in Tears of the Kingdom, which you build in the same quest that Bolson helps you build you house, Hudson who builds Tarrey Town alongside link remembers, but Bolson doesn't?

Its stated in BOTW Link can speak, and actually is a lot more talkative then he was 100 years prior as before he put so much pressure on himself and always kept his problems to himself so no one would think of him as weak or unworthy, but after losing his memories he became more open and talkative I think he slowly is returning to how he was before though in tears of the kingdom as you see with Zelda he doesn't talk as much and just let's her do the talking which could also be a bit of survivors guilt after all his friends died to Calamity Ganon some of them died hoping he would save them in the end (Mipha) so honestly by this point Links lack of talking so much could just be do to depression and stress.
They don't have to necessarily forget him, I think Link just has a major case of Tony Hawk syndrome. If Link entered a Hero of Hyrule lookalike contest he would score 4th place
Plenty of people remember him, and like you said, its been 8 years. I dont remember most people I encountered from 8 years ago, and those I do remember clearly made an impact on my life to be remembered. All the right characters remember Link. It feels like it should.

I never understood this argument. Literally all of Lookout Landing remembers him. All of Zoras Domain remembers him. Most of the Rito remember him. Paya, Impa, Traci, the construction workers remember him. And all the other villages welcome him like a familiar face. Aside from actually new people, no one I remember treats him like a stranger
Plus alot of side quests in games are usually considered non Canon at times (eg when the the Hero of Kvatch or the Dragonborn from the Elder Scrolls series does side quests, it's hypothesized that these quests in Canon are actually completed by other individuals. Only Story/dlc story missions are counted as canon)
The first thing is that Link was all the hype right before the calamity and everyone looked up to him and the fact that supposedly he had a family to support and maybe even look after put basically TONS of weight on his shoulders and he eventually just stopped showing emotion and then when he regained his memory he didn’t want to carry that weight so they agreed to not tell anyone, I’d do the same thing in that situation.
It is kinda weird at first. But then again, saving the people of Hyrule was the most important part, not the recognition. And courage need not be remembered for it is never forgotten.

My only criticism is that your BoTW save file should have recorded and carried over everyone you met and talked to for special dialogue. Had you not met or spoken to them, or if you didn’t have a save file then NPCs wouldn’t know Link save for the main NPC’s (Sages, Impa, Purah, Robbie, etc.). But I’m sure that would have eaten up a ton of data.
That also seems jarring while playing the game cause every other npc would be like, "Oh hey I remember you! You gave me raw gourmet meat several years ago!" And most people will not remember at all when they did that in BotW. It wouldn't really make sense and I feel like would take me out of the game because of how common that'd be.
And we also are in a more medieval time, so News and facts don‘t spread that well. And they likely don’t have the ability to make pictures and share them. So even if they heard the name once they don’t exactly know how he looks. That also is the reason why Yigas get trained to know how Link looks.

He actually does get remembered in some small instances. For example Hudson and his wife both remember and thank you for introducing them to each other. There's others but I can't remember

Also in the time between BotW and TotK, Link went back to following Zelda around in the same fashion as he did when he was her appointed knight, so people making more note in their minds of Princess Zelda showing up and talking to them than her bodyguard further adds to this
Link isn't just a soldier. He's the guy who traveled across all of Hyrule helping out the Rito, Gerudo, Zora, Gorons, and Hylians. He helped free the 4 Champions and then marched to Hyrule Castle and took on Calamity Ganon. It's also pretty much confirmed he did all BOTW quests based on how he has max hearts, Tarrey Town is built, etc., so he should be more widely known. It makes no sense that the Gerudo know about Urbosa, the Rito know about Revali, the Gorons literally have Daruks face carved into the mountain, the Zora remember Mipha, and the Hylians can't even remember Link, the Hylian champion, but instantly recognize Zelda. Presumably Link is still Zeldas bodyguard so why does the entirety of Hyrule know Zelda but not her bodyguard, the guy who saved the world from Ganon? It's such a mess up on Nintendos part.

The champions descendants remember him for obvious reasons but nobody else seems to aside from I think Hudson I don't remember if he does though. My theory is that in the canon for botw link didn't waste any time. He got the sheikah slate upgraded, got memories, got the sword, freed the beasts and beat up ganon. You could slide building a house and tarrey town into there but it is possible that happened after the calamity as well.
And yet everyone fawns over Zelda despite her having to be saved and you doing the heavy lifting. Personally, I'd be more than a little pi$$ed off if I did everything he did and almost no one remembered me or recognized the superhuman accomplishments I did to keep their a$$es alive.
She literally spent 100 years without break as an incorporeal magic force fighting darkness. She was doing overtime while Link was off snowbowling and practicing his shield surf tricks. In spite of that, what Zelda is known for is the public service works she's done in the years between games. Girl's been busy. It's disappointing they don't mention the good works Link did less recently, but I think she's earned her moment in the spotlight.
@@smithsmith1956 On that particular count they may not know. Most of the ones that do know acknowledge it. I think the majority of NPCs in Zelda games don't know about prophecy and all that, otherwise they might think twice about sending a legendary hero to fetch the milk.

When I went to school I didn't loved socializing, but it really surprised me when I went back two years later to that same school only like 2 teachers and my old bully remembered me
My personal favorite Iroh quote "You must never give in to despair, slip down that path and you surrender to your lowest instinct. In our darkest times hope is something you give yourself, that is the meaning of inner strength." Iroh truely has helped me shape the kind of man I am now and strive to be.
I have a theory that rauru's hand kept ganondorf and his past locked away in time somehow which could be why the calamity "gave up" on reviving properly and when it was removed the 2 timelines came together again making an amalgamation of reality
Like literally imagine being the hero of Hyrule the person who saved the entire Kingdom from the Calamity The Prisoner saved Princess Zelda the King's Daughter and being the princess has appointed night and literally nobody knows who you are I think I would cry
It'd be nice if they at least mentioned whether the Divine Beasts were gone before or after the Upheaval. They were huge and probably sat around in view of cities for years even if they weren't acting up.
I like to think that the amount of in-game time that passed between botw and totk was the same amount of time it took from botw's release in 2017 to totk's release in 2023. So a little over six years.
The funny part is this explains why link is often overlooked in a lot of the other games too like twilight princess, he went off to live in an obscure little village and nobody in Hyrule town recognized him grown up
Lots of people do even people I don’t think were in botw(mainly people at lookout landing or the four main story areas(not just lookout landing with purah and Robbie but some of the people outside guarding the place)
It has been said that, I think, six years have passed. I know that it was two years in between the end of BOTW and the end cutscene for it. TOTK took place four years after that.

Well, most of gerudo town doesn’t actually know him. Or rather they don’t recognize him since they would’ve only known him as his vai disguise. They just know he’s some dude who helped out riju in a major way and she granted him access to the town so they just gotta go along with it
Except you still had to sneak into gerudo town after Vah Naboris and the only ones who knew (or at least said something about it) were some of the guards, Riju, and the GSC members. This canononically means that the Gerudo are so devoted to outdated rules that they didn't let the dude who saved them from an ancient death machine AND retrieved their sacred artifact enter their town until Riju said sometime later "Oh yeah that weird vai was actually a voe named Link, we're buddies since he was close to my great-great grandma, he's cool, he's the first dude allowed in our town for years."
And then they still make fun of you for not being tall and having huge abs.

I like to think of it as them playing it safe and Catering to players that might have only done unskippable main quest events, but not side quests

You can literally just go straight to the final boss after getting the paraglider so most of the main quests are in fact skippable.
You'd think TotK being a sequel would encourage people to play the first game.
More likely they're catering to players who didn't play the previous game at all. Side quests are eluded to, but even the most familiar characters (outside the new champions and certain Sheikah) reintroduce themselves so new players aren't left wondering who they are and what their relationship with Link is.

It wasn't the best executed. Would've been better to have a room of the schoolhouse dedicated to explaining where all the stuff from the previous game went since there's all that unused space, or maybe signs of dismantling work in the Hateno tech lab. There could have been a plaque in most towns hinting on past events.
But I understand why they chose not to have all the Calamity stuff in there on top of the Upheaval map elements, and why they feel the need to reintroduce most of the characters.
I mean, Zelda would 100% tell everyone what happened. Link shouldve been a celebrity at the very least, though i guess people wouldn't know him by just looking at him (i think there are three gerudo women at a stable who corroborate this as they know about a hero that killed calamity ganon, but speculate that hes super tall and handsome)
Its strange though because all of the sidequests are implied to be canon; the Tarrey Town -sons and the zora not remembering you is the most alarming to me

The NPC Bolton for some reason doesn’t remember Link.
He’s an NPC you interact with a lot in BoTW, and is the starting NPC for the eventual Tarrey Town construction. Tarrey Town is in ToTK, meaning buying the house in Hateno and mainly interacting with Bolson is a cannon event, but when you meet Bolson again in Luralin Village, he doesn’t seem to remember you.

There is also Teba and his wife, Buliara, Purah, Robbie, Impa and probably a few more. Basically anyone who played a major role in the main quests in BOTW, plus Tulin.
Just correcting you on something that’s a common misconception the hylian man and zora child aren’t dating it was a translation error, they are best friends however.

the malice storm around the castle didnt pop up untill shortly after the great platoe tower erupted if you begin the game again you can see its not there untill the great platoue tower cutscene

As for Hestu, I think he's just dumb. Bro lost all hundreds of his koroks in both BotW and TotK, and likely lost them all many other times. Him not recognizing Link, or just straight up forgetting about him, seems pretty on brand for him.
I assumed that they did this because botw was so open and it would be weirder to be recognised by someone you might've never talked to in botw than being forgotten by most non-story relevant characters. So in my head, totk plays in a reality where Link actually hurried up during the events of botw to save zelda, instead of doing a thousand little riddles and sidequests.
I’m honestly surprised that the Zora don't remember him (other than Sidon and Dorphean ofc). They literally remembered him for a hundred years, and then forgot in the span of eight months. That's messed up.
Keep in mind, a lot of the side quests you did in breath of the wild were not canon. Impa tells link to get his ass to the divine beasts as fast as possible. So he did just that. He basically did a speedrun
He presumably did at least get the Master Sword though. The rest of the memories, he could've potentially went around being reminded of stuff by Zelda and the other people who are old enough to know him, after having defeated Calamity Ganon and saved her.
At minimum you save the races from the divine beasts. There are some nuances in that.
I do believe that Link being the hero he is would've done most of the quests, but I could understand monster medals and koroks not being canon, stuff like that.
two side quest probably were canon though: link buying back his own house in hateno village, and supporting hudson's dream of starting his own construction company by building Terry town. The first one being the need to provide zelda a place to live after this quest is over, as its not like she can live in the castle anymore. The second being that by supporting Hudson in building up terry town link would be making it easier for Zelda to enact any of her plans on restoring all of hyrule.
Even the ones that are canon like Terry Town have people who should recognize Link acting like they don't. Specifically the Zora priest who previously very much knew him treats him like a random traveler.
It's weird that only Hudson and Rhondson recognize him.
And unless I'm remembering wrong for that to happen you have to have gotten the house built, but in totk it's mentioned Zelda had the house built instead.
It just doesn't line up with BoTW and is either oversight or an alternate timeline.

Simpliest answer: link doesn't want a repeat of what happened 100 years ago where a majority of hyrule knew his face or name and the kind of knight he was. Expectant eyes and ears followed him everywhere. Zelda likely agreed with him that way too many knew who he was and decided to only tell those they really trusted. I think beedle knows but has to pretend link is any other customer. Link basically suffered from overexposure to the public and never wants to experience it again. The pressure was too much.
My headcannon is that link went around killing monsters and traveling as Zelda’s guard but didn’t talk to people he just made sure monsters were dead Zelda’s safe because with Zelda she’s easy to hide just put in a cloak but I don’t think link used any weapons aside from the master sword after getting it so it’s much harder to hide a blade when you need to be ready than hide a face when you dont
I don’t get why everyone says NOBODY remembers Link. There are a few NPCs that don’t remember him, but there are tons of them that do. Everyone in the main story remembers him and lots of people around the map do as well, it’s usually NPCs who have no relation to the main story who don’t remember, and that could be because the stuff that happened involving them wasn’t canon, or it could be because they didn’t have time to worry about all of that while they were making this amazing game

Plus Tarrey Town exists in Tears of the Kingdom, which you build in the same quest that Bolson helps you build you house, Hudson who builds Tarrey Town alongside link remembers, but Bolson doesn't?

Its stated in BOTW Link can speak, and actually is a lot more talkative then he was 100 years prior as before he put so much pressure on himself and always kept his problems to himself so no one would think of him as weak or unworthy, but after losing his memories he became more open and talkative I think he slowly is returning to how he was before though in tears of the kingdom as you see with Zelda he doesn't talk as much and just let's her do the talking which could also be a bit of survivors guilt after all his friends died to Calamity Ganon some of them died hoping he would save them in the end (Mipha) so honestly by this point Links lack of talking so much could just be do to depression and stress.

The first thing is that Link was all the hype right before the calamity and everyone looked up to him and the fact that supposedly he had a family to support and maybe even look after put basically TONS of weight on his shoulders and he eventually just stopped showing emotion and then when he regained his memory he didn’t want to carry that weight so they agreed to not tell anyone, I’d do the same thing in that situation.
I mean he had a family, but he wasn't a father. So he didn't have to support them.

My only criticism is that your BoTW save file should have recorded and carried over everyone you met and talked to for special dialogue. Had you not met or spoken to them, or if you didn’t have a save file then NPCs wouldn’t know Link save for the main NPC’s (Sages, Impa, Purah, Robbie, etc.). But I’m sure that would have eaten up a ton of data.
And not just what horses you had
That also seems jarring while playing the game cause every other npc would be like, "Oh hey I remember you! You gave me raw gourmet meat several years ago!" And most people will not remember at all when they did that in BotW. It wouldn't really make sense and I feel like would take me out of the game because of how common that'd be.

Link isn't just a soldier. He's the guy who traveled across all of Hyrule helping out the Rito, Gerudo, Zora, Gorons, and Hylians. He helped free the 4 Champions and then marched to Hyrule Castle and took on Calamity Ganon. It's also pretty much confirmed he did all BOTW quests based on how he has max hearts, Tarrey Town is built, etc., so he should be more widely known. It makes no sense that the Gerudo know about Urbosa, the Rito know about Revali, the Gorons literally have Daruks face carved into the mountain, the Zora remember Mipha, and the Hylians can't even remember Link, the Hylian champion, but instantly recognize Zelda. Presumably Link is still Zeldas bodyguard so why does the entirety of Hyrule know Zelda but not her bodyguard, the guy who saved the world from Ganon? It's such a mess up on Nintendos part.

@@No-ze9lvidk, it feels like Nintendo has made this incarnation of link play out like a side character, Zelda is the one who everyone seems to praise as the hero while link is just her bodyguard. I miss how it was in the older games where you actually felt like a badass mysterious hero.😮💨
I think Hestu should’ve at least remembered us, cuz even though technically he wasn’t a part of the story, I feel like he would’ve been a character Link met multiple times on his journey

The champions descendants remember him for obvious reasons but nobody else seems to aside from I think Hudson I don't remember if he does though.
My theory is that in the canon for botw link didn't waste any time. He got the sheikah slate upgraded, got memories, got the sword, freed the beasts and beat up ganon. You could slide building a house and tarrey town into there but it is possible that happened after the calamity as well.
In the hateno village school, you can find Purahs old assistant (I forgot his name), teaching a lesson about the calamity.

She literally spent 100 years without break as an incorporeal magic force fighting darkness. She was doing overtime while Link was off snowbowling and practicing his shield surf tricks. In spite of that, what Zelda is known for is the public service works she's done in the years between games.
Girl's been busy. It's disappointing they don't mention the good works Link did less recently, but I think she's earned her moment in the spotlight.

On that particular count they may not know. Most of the ones that do know acknowledge it. I think the majority of NPCs in Zelda games don't know about prophecy and all that, otherwise they might think twice about sending a legendary hero to fetch the milk.
@@BonaparteBardithion That always cracked me up. You have this basically superhuman hylian and folks are asking him to get bugs or find their missing chicken. It just think it sucks Link doesn't get the same level of recognition Zelda does. Both were essential. One couldn't do their job without the other.

When I went to school I didn't loved socializing, but it really surprised me when I went back two years later to that same school only like 2 teachers and my old bully remembered me

Also no one ever mentions the devine beasts being gone or other significant things from the past.
It'd be nice if they at least mentioned whether the Divine Beasts were gone before or after the Upheaval. They were huge and probably sat around in view of cities for years even if they weren't acting up.

I like to think that the amount of in-game time that passed between botw and totk was the same amount of time it took from botw's release in 2017 to totk's release in 2023. So a little over six years.

It has been said that, I think, six years have passed. I know that it was two years in between the end of BOTW and the end cutscene for it. TOTK took place four years after that.
