CS grad here. I appreciate that you shared the truth about the pros and cons of the CS major. The market is highly competitive for entry-level software development jobs and internships. It's less competitive for software developers/engineers with a few years of experience. There's much more demand for mid-level and senior engineers than for entry-level. My sympathy really goes to graduates competing with others for their first job. But even if your hard skills are average, you can still get that first job if you have been building your professional network and soft skills throughout your college years, since people often hire somebody they're already familiar with and respect.
Yes, i graduated a few months back and I can't seem to find anything, I'm actually getting worried. I see a ton of jobs available, but they're all directed to people with 5+ years of experience and absolutely nothing for new grads like me. If you have experience you have so many options , if you're a new grad like me you're bottom of the barrel garbage.
The cons for me was it's more math and theoretical frameworks. I'm the type that needed to see I was doing something and applying it to the real world.

ngl being at a computer for most of the time looking at a black screen with text is not really a very nice time. i would hate doing that for 8 hours, luckinly its "only" 3 hours... i'd loose my sanity if i did that for 8. plus the lack of forced movement is really bad for your health. moving when you arent meaning to move is one of the best ways to maintaining your health, along with a diet that you dont think about but have anyway because its good for you.
As a Nursing student, you’re spot on bro! NOTHING beats healthcare degrees/careers IMO. They’re what we call “recession proof” careers. In fact, Nursing and healthcare careers actually go up in demand during economic downturns. It’s also great knowing that I’ll never have to want or fight for a job like new grad software developers. You can make great money practically anywhere in the country but especially here in California it’s the BEST. People actually respect and trust nurses and doctors. And the advance careers in nursing are awesome and financially rewarding. From Nurse Midwives, to Nurse Practitioners to Nurse Anesthetists (My long term goal 🙏) there are so many avenues for advancement. The main downside to the field is how physically and emotionally taxing it can be, as well as government regulations 🙄 other than that healthcare truly can’t be beat by ANY other field. Physicians, Nurses, Respiratory Therapist and other healthcare professionals will always come out on top! So glad I chose Nursing over CS or any other degree for that matter. It’s simply the BEST.
I'm glad I fought for my job as a software engineer. Bypassed the college degree route at 27 years old, fresh out of the Army. Now, I make over 6 figures (85k salary) plus my VA disability. It's hard to break into for a reason... It's equally as worth it though depending on what job you are looking for.
What about speech language pathologist? I heard both good and bad things. I am interested in pursing this but I want a good work life balance. I heard that this is a job that doesn’t just stop when u clock out. Is this true because that is a big factor for me. I also heard pay can be really good depending on where you live. I have been a director of operations for restaurants, done some finance jobs, had worked for both private and public accounting firms; and I am now just an accountant because I love it!
I studied math and I'm so glad I did it. If you want to do something social science related or even humanities related and then actually find a job in that field, mathematics and computer science are the degrees for you. There's so much data out there and a math degree will help you be able to deal with the data. My current job uses geography, Arabic, linguistics, and a little bit of history, but my math, stats, and CS background provides me with skills to attack those problems.

Depends, some people are good at maths, some at communication, some at selling, some at persuading and so on. It’s just that until you work it’s essentially a hit or miss of your degree is worth your time and money. I did marketing management (with emphasis on digital marketing) and the most valuable skills I took away was how to build a functioning website, social media and email account for a business and I had to self study as they rarely let you experiment in degrees, 99% of the time it’s research writing with sources already obsolete or irrelevant today. (In fact, any research paper once published is and should be considered obsolete)
Another plus of an MIS degree: if you don't know what exactly you're interested in, and want to learn about tech an business it's great! You don't even have to be great at business if yoy've tried it and it doesn't suit you. It has plenty of electives and you can pick whatever field of tech you want to study. I myself picked a lot of software development electives for my senior year and I've learned enough to get into an entry level junior dev job. Very flexible, versatile and you pick your own path basically. As a consultant, tech manager or software developer.

The Best Associate Degree is Nursing because you can Become a Registered Nurse (In CA) without a Bachelor degree (you can save a lot of money) and get 10,000 monthly, after work 2 years you can become a Traveler Nurse and Earn 2800-5000 per Week and i repeat WITHOUT A “BACHELOR DEGREE” just an Associate Degree.
Nurses have one of the greatest stepping stone degrees I've ever seen. Start with an associates as a CN, get your bachelors and become an RN, all the way up to possibly getting a PHd and becoming a nurse practitioner.

Depending on what you’re willing to do with it and if you can afford it, law school is incredibly beneficial for professions outside of law. It teaches you the ability to not only think and analyze details but also the added benefit of expertise in a field which is in every industry, giving you an insight in law when it comes to business or other fields, making you valuable to employers and more likely to get a higher salary.
From grade 6 I was really passionate abou MATHEMATICS. I wasn't the best I'll say but it gave me joy. Same goes for my 11 and 12 grade. I was passionate. I liked solving problems if someone asked me to solve problems I was the happiest. And now coincidentally I'm majoring in MATHEMATICS. It wasn't my decision in fact my grades were not that good so college/ university chose that for me. It's the system actually for National university in my country 😢. But fortunately as always I'm loving it. I love solving problems. It really feels great. Other than passion I was so worried about career as I didn't get the chance to choose my major. I'm interested in so many different subjects and none of them pay well, nor are the degrees to get into the industries useful. I am genuinely uninterested in all of these degrees that were listed, and I'm afraid that I'm not gojng to have a fulfilling future because of this.
Consider combing a BS in math with a BS in the sciences or business or finance if you can afford to. Could be done in 5 years with 18 hr semesters and a couple of summer schools. That math degree really enhances the 2nd degree and sets you apart from the competition and the double-talkers. Great selection of accounting degree; tremendous applications to multiple areas as you broaden your certifications and areas worked. Qudos on MIS, too.
I feel you should probably specify the differences between nursing degrees. LPN vs RN can have as much as a 50% difference in pay in the same city. Median RN in my state is around 100k whil median LPN is closer to 65k

You are confused. You need accounting to understand basic finance. Past 2 to 3 courses in Accounting, Finance is much more complicated than you think. Finance came out of Economics. I should not say anything more.
I have a bachelor's degree in physics and have spent most of my career doing process engineering. There are four generations of nurses in my mother's side of the family. One thing that has always made me jealous about my family members in nursing is their mobility. As long as I continue to work in my current field, I will always be tethered to a large city in regions which host specific industries. Healthcare professionals can, in principle, move to any community capable of supporting a clinic or hospital. Over the years, I have seen many nursing professionals uproot and move to a new region that I couldn't consider moving to without abandoning my career.

I specifically looked at ways to leverage my physics background (including medical physics, radiology, and diagnostic sonography). My sense of things is that the demand for such professionals should remain high as the population ages. However, I think someone considering sonography or radiography should do a lot of research before pursuing it. There seems to be a lot of variability from region to region concerning qualifications, wages and licensing.

Information systems degrees tend to be the best option for data analytics, but IT, business admin, economics and computer science work well too. R and Python tend to be good languages to learn for data analytics.
Statistics/math. Could also go for management information systems but honestly ststistics/math is more impressive and suitable still imo. Could easily go a level higher into data science too instead with math/statistics too
I have a BS in physics from UC Berkeley and the job outlook is not that great. If you want to be a researcher, astronomer, or physicist you would need a phd. Luckily for me I double major with a BS in Data Science and got a job doing that, but a BS in physics itself could hardly get you anywhere aside from teaching.

Political science is not a standalone degree. It's been 30 years, but my undergraduate major was political science with a pre-law minor, obviously with the intention of going to law school. Thinking the legal field was overcrowded, I opted instead for grad school in public administration -- big mistake. If you choose to major in political science, just know that it will not be helpful unless you go on to law school or grad school, and my recommendation would be law school over grad school.
Depends, I find it very weak because it has produced many fraudsters and accountants that destroyed businesses like SBF of FTX, Enron, Worldcomm and so on. If you’re a very skilled person with maths or can give answers without looking or needing to write out the formula then it’s not worth the effort as it may be a waste of time.
Let’s see what I took away from each career and how it lines up with my own self; 1). Last but certainly not least, ah nurse. I would never go into the medical field, it’s just not my cup of tea and I have never considered it. Sure, I admire the millions of people going into it but it’s a no for me. 2). Mechanical engineering: Again, I don’t want to go through all of that stress just to end up in a dark hole of nothing. I want to find decent jobs with a solid pay, I don’t want to be fully limited from my creative abilities too. 3). Industrial engineering: Seriously? I don’t think it’s even realistic for me to successfully make it that far to something that complex. It’s just I would get overwhelmed with all of the courses I would have to take, not taking it. 4). Computer science: alright, I get it. I have to live in a computer to get a high pay. I do enjoy problem-solving but I’m not sure I would take the decision and work with software, again not sure if it’s truly me. And 10:17 I’d prefer to have a job that is longer than that time range so it’s a no for me. 5). Management information systems: hmm, sounds interesting but I’m not too sure if I would go into this. I have considered business still. 7:16 yea, no thanks. I’m a creative person and I’d much rather to use my creativity in the work environment. 6). Accounting & finance: sounds boring and it doesn’t really sound like my place, plus it’s too repetitive. 5:27 I don’t want to get burnt out though, I prefer working at my own pace thanks. 7). Stats & math: I’m an individual who’s alright in math but noting special. I guess what I’m saying is I’ll pass in fully majoring in it despite my mom having a master’s in it😅. 2:01 the limited job opportunities will not do as well. BONUS!: A bit about myself (not that it matters but it might serve some good); I’m a creative individual who’s good with brainstorming and sharing my ideas with others. I’m also an introvert who has developed somewhat good communication skills. I enjoy problem-solving and working with puzzles as well. Question: Will AI like Chat GPT make software development a less good option as a career? I would most likely only be a developer of average skill so I am worried that I would be replaced by AI alongside many others.
The most important thing you can know how to do career wise is provide value to people in one way or another. I'd highly recommend looking at what John Carmack said about what I just mentioned, as he puts it so well. If AI were to fundamentally shift how software is made, that doesn't mean that software will no longer require humans. It'll still need people to know what makes sense in software design and what doesn't, and how to ensure that what the AI is doing actually works fully properly and in the way that makes the most sense. The most important thing is to know whatever skills are currently most useful for providing value to clients, whatever the skills of a given current age are. The industry will absolutely get disrupted, but learning these skills will prepare you better than most people for what AI is about to do to so many careers, not just software development. By the time software developers are fully pushed out, many many other jobs (although certainly not all) will also be, and society will need to fundamentally change at that point. If you want the absolute safest white collar option, I would guess being a surgeon or something like that would be at the top, something highly skilled, requires physical action and not something we'd immediately allow AI to run wild with and mess up. But I also don't think that software development is at the bottom of the totem pole either, and I'm now starting to make peace with the fact that despite the risks, I still want to move forward with it. The choice is up to you.

Everyone thinking that an AI will replace them instead of thinking how can they use AI to be more productive, thwy will be replace. Don't feel like you have to be financially gatekeeped from trying different subjects on your own outside of school. There are plenty of free resources online for learning, you could try different topics and see what you like best, and then go from there.

I did marketing management (with emphasis on digital marketing) and the most valuable skills I took away was how to build a functioning website, social media and email account for a business and I had to self study as they rarely let you experiment in degrees, 99% of the time it’s research writing with sources already obsolete or irrelevant today. (In fact, any research paper once published is and should be considered obsolete)

Another plus of an MIS degree: if you don't know what exactly you're interested in, and want to learn about tech an business it's great! You don't even have to be great at business if yoy've tried it and it doesn't suit you. It has plenty of electives and you can pick whatever field of tech you want to study. I myself picked a lot of software development electives for my senior year and I've learned enough to get into an entry level junior dev job. Very flexible, versatile and you pick your own path basically. As a consultant, tech manager or software developer.

Nurses have one of the greatest stepping stone degrees I've ever seen. Start with an associates as a CN, get your bachelors and become an RN, all the way up to possibly getting a PHd and becoming a nurse practitioner.

Depending on what you’re willing to do with it and if you can afford it, law school is incredibly beneficial for professions outside of law. It teaches you the ability to not only think and analyze details but also the added benefit of expertise in a field which is in every industry, giving you an insight in law when it comes to business or other fields, making you valuable to employers and more likely to get a higher salary.

From grade 6 I was really passionate abou MATHEMATICS. I wasn't the best I'll say but it gave me joy. Same goes for my 11 and 12 grade. I was passionate. I liked solving problems if someone asked me to solve problems I was the happiest. And now coincidentally I'm majoring in MATHEMATICS. It wasn't my decision in fact my grades were not that good so college/ university chose that for me. It's the system actually for National university in my country 😢. But fortunately as always I'm loving it. I love solving problems. It really feels great. Other than passion I was so worried about career as I didn't get the chance to choose my major. Consider combing a BS in math with a BS in the sciences or business or finance if you can afford to. Could be done in 5 years with 18 hr semesters and a couple of summer schools. That math degree really enhances the 2nd degree and sets you apart from the competition and the double-talkers. Great selection of accounting degree; tremendous applications to multiple areas as you broaden your certifications and areas worked. Qudos on MIS, too.

I feel you should probably specify the differences between nursing degrees. LPN vs RN can have as much as a 50% difference in pay in the same city. Median RN in my state is around 100k whil median LPN is closer to 65k

You are confused. You need accounting to understand basic finance. Past 2 to 3 courses in Accounting, Finance is much more complicated than you think. Finance came out of Economics. I should not say anything more.

I have a bachelor's degree in physics and have spent most of my career doing process engineering. There are four generations of nurses in my mother's side of the family. One thing that has always made me jealous about my family members in nursing is their mobility. As long as I continue to work in my current field, I will always be tethered to a large city in regions which host specific industries. Healthcare professionals can, in principle, move to any community capable of supporting a clinic or hospital. Over the years, I have seen many nursing professionals uproot and move to a new region that I couldn't consider moving to without abandoning my career.

I specifically looked at ways to leverage my physics background (including medical physics, radiology, and diagnostic sonography). My sense of things is that the demand for such professionals should remain high as the population ages. However, I think someone considering sonography or radiography should do a lot of research before pursuing it. There seems to be a lot of variability from region to region concerning qualifications, wages and licensing.

I want to be a data analyst but which major should I study or which programming language should I go for?
Information systems degrees tend to be the best option for data analytics, but IT, business admin, economics and computer science work well too. R and Python tend to be good languages to learn for data analytics.
Statistics/math. Could also go for management information systems but honestly ststistics/math is more impressive and suitable still imo. Could easily go a level higher into data science too instead with math/statistics too

I have a BS in physics from UC Berkeley and the job outlook is not that great. If you want to be a researcher, astronomer, or physicist you would need a phd. Luckily for me I double major with a BS in Data Science and got a job doing that, but a BS in physics itself could hardly get you anywhere aside from teaching.

Political science is not a standalone degree. It's been 30 years, but my undergraduate major was political science with a pre-law minor, obviously with the intention of going to law school. Thinking the legal field was overcrowded, I opted instead for grad school in public administration -- big mistake. If you choose to major in political science, just know that it will not be helpful unless you go on to law school or grad school, and my recommendation would be law school over grad school.

Depends, I find it very weak because it has produced many fraudsters and accountants that destroyed businesses like SBF of FTX, Enron, Worldcomm and so on.
If you’re a very skilled person with maths or can give answers without looking or needing to write out the formula then it’s not worth the effort as it may be a waste of time.

Let’s see what I took away from each career and how it lines up with my own self;
1). Last but certainly not least, ah nurse. I would never go into the medical field, it’s just not my cup of tea and I have never considered it. Sure, I admire the millions of people going into it but it’s a no for me.
2). Mechanical engineering: Again, I don’t want to go through all of that stress just to end up in a dark hole of nothing. I want to find decent jobs with a solid pay, I don’t want to be fully limited from my creative abilities too.
3). Industrial engineering: Seriously? I don’t think it’s even realistic for me to successfully make it that far to something that complex. It’s just I would get overwhelmed with all of the courses I would have to take, not taking it.
4). Computer science: alright, I get it. I have to live in a computer to get a high pay. I do enjoy problem-solving but I’m not sure I would take the decision and work with software, again not sure if it’s truly me. And 10:17 I’d prefer to have a job that is longer than that time range so it’s a no for me.
5). Management information systems: hmm, sounds interesting but I’m not too sure if I would go into this. I have considered business still. 7:16 yea, no thanks. I’m a creative person and I’d much rather to use my creativity in the work environment.
6). Accounting & finance: sounds boring and it doesn’t really sound like my place, plus it’s too repetitive. 5:27 I don’t want to get burnt out though, I prefer working at my own pace thanks.
7). Stats & math: I’m an individual who’s alright in math but noting special. I guess what I’m saying is I’ll pass in fully majoring in it despite my mom having a master’s in it😅. 2:01 the limited job opportunities will not do as well.
BONUS!: A bit about myself (not that it matters but it might serve some good); I’m a creative individual who’s good with brainstorming and sharing my ideas with others. I’m also an introvert who has developed somewhat good communication skills. I enjoy problem-solving and working with puzzles as well. I’ll find out someday but for now these are my honest thoughts 🤞🏻

Question: Will AI like Chat GPT make software development a less good option as a career? I would most likely only be a developer of average skill so I am worried that I would be replaced by AI alongside many others.
The most important thing you can know how to do career wise is provide value to people in one way or another. I'd highly recommend looking at what John Carmack said about what I just mentioned, as he puts it so well. If AI were to fundamentally shift how software is made, that doesn't mean that software will no longer require humans. It'll still need people to know what makes sense in software design and what doesn't, and how to ensure that what the AI is doing actually works fully properly and in the way that makes the most sense. The most important thing is to know whatever skills are currently most useful for providing value to clients, whatever the skills of a given current age are. The industry will absolutely get disrupted, but learning these skills will prepare you better than most people for what AI is about to do to so many careers, not just software development. By the time software developers are fully pushed out, many many other jobs (although certainly not all) will also be, and society will need to fundamentally change at that point. If you want the absolute safest white collar option, I would guess being a surgeon or something like that would be at the top, something highly skilled, requires physical action and not something we'd immediately allow AI to run wild with and mess up. But I also don't think that software development is at the bottom of the totem pole either, and I'm now starting to make peace with the fact that despite the risks, I still want to move forward with it. The choice is up to you.

Don't feel like you have to be financially gatekeeped from trying different subjects on your own outside of school. There are plenty of free resources online for learning, you could try different topics and see what you like best, and then go from there.
