Who downvotes a video like this? Seriously, what is up with people that they would do that? Keep 'em comin', Greg. Always learn something on these visits.
I'm not sure that I agree with you about the vocal being "bad." She is microtonaly pitchy but not enough to be distracting, unless you've grown up in the era when most vocals are Autotuned to pitch perfection but soulless delivery. Grab a few multitracks of classic songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and run them through Autotune/Melodyne. See how many drift off pitch and yet still sound great. Anyhoo, this is a video about sidechaining, not pitch correction, so I'm not sure what the vocal performance has to do with anonymous down votes?
Inded. Or, parhaps as Tcommando said, it's people who find the vocals jarring? For instance, if I had to sing for my supper I would've starved a long time ago. However, I'm a reasonable guitarist, and, if I hear a guitar played slighlty off tune, it hurts my ears. Maybe this is what Tcommando was referring to? Unfortunately, there's no way of knowing this from downvotes only. It just looks like you don't like the video, which is unfair to Greg, who is always superb.
I have one question about activating side-chain in Cubase. Is there a difference between just "Activating delay side chain in original track's send" and "Changing output of copy audio track to side-chained delay effector"?
Thank you so much sir.... it's very authentic and easy way to learn. I'm very grateful to you sir. Please make a video on what should be the exact insert plugins sequence in the vocal track during mixing. Thanx.
Hi and thanks for the great video. Is there a way to side chain the delay without duplicating the track. Also, is there any difference between side chaining and actually changing the outputs? It has always made me wonder.
Hi greg. I can't hear my guitar when I'm punching in. I have the two points engages also the lock engaged. I can hear before and after the punch in but not whist its recording. Is ir possible I have something switched off? Kindest regards Vince I a regular and I love and use this learning platform.
Thanks for the tipps, Greg! Would be a good idea to set the MIX in the delay to 100% wet. The delay is still too loud over the sung words for my taste. Another sidechained compressor afterwards would be nice. Also the relaese-time in the reverb compressor is set to 500ms, which takes away very much of the reverb signal. something like 100ms would probably be better. BTW: why do you copy the vocal track? you could use the pre-fader sends from the original track, i think. BBTW: could you make the intro to your videos a bit softer? i always have to turn down my amp for that. best, Ralf
Hey, Greg! Thanks for the this video. I've been trying to use this on a duplicated group channel. Essentially, I've got two lead vocal tracks grouped into 1 stereo channel. I've duplicated the group channel and followed the instructions: > create an FX channel (delay) for the original group channel and turn it on/up in the send section > add a compressor below the delay in the insert section of the return (FX) channel > activate the side chain on the compressor > route the duplicated group channel to the side chained compressor. But it doesn't work. Is there a step I'm missing? Or is it the case that I have to duplicate the actual audio tracks? The reason I need to apply delay ducking to the group channel, as opposed to the individual vocal tracks, is that I'm already processing the group channel, i.e. added inserts to affect both vocal tracks at once. IT would totally defeat the object of improving workflow if, say, I had six vocal tracks that required the same ducking treatment. So I hope it IS the case that I'm missing a step. Many thanks. I look forward to your reply.
Ok... it looks like this only works when audio tracks are copied. Maybe that's something that Steinberg need to look into... giving us the ability to apply the same technique to group channels, as well as via the Direct Routing facility.
Greg, I am used to Logic Pro X where a Aux bus can be setup and a compressor is used up high along with sidechain to do that. Why is the Cubase way so convoluted?. Why can't we sidechain a comp and feed it down to the delay.
Why do you need to duplicate the original track though? Can't you just send from the VOX channel to the FX channel and also send from VOX channel to the sidechain?
Any chance of a video showing how to install Cubase on a PC ? I've been trying for over a week so far and it simply does not want to install on my computer. I have Windows 7 64 bit - it's all fully up to date, has no malware or viruses on it and yet Cubase does not want to install on it. Every other brand of DAW I have tried installs without any issues - but Cubase 9.5 simply won't install. So far the only thing I have produced on Cubase 9.5 is the following: Cubase LE AI Elements 9.5.30 Update installation failed. Fatal error during installation. Error Code: 1603
*Run as Administrator* the Steinberg Download Assistant. Download and install the latest version of Elements from this. If this fails, post a ticket on Steinberg Support. They will walk you through it.
+ Gary Neutrino. I got in contact with Yamaha / Steinberg. It turns out I had an issue with my .Net Framerwork. Windows Update was saying it was ok / up to date - but after looking into the registry I was in fact on an older version. So I installed Net Framework 4.7.2 - and now it all works like a charm.
May Mohnen cubase elements doesn't support sidechain on its native vsts unfortunately so you won't be able to use this exact technique, it's frustrating I am an elements user also so share your pain lol
Awesome Greg thanks 🙏 so much your awesome, hey is there any way to go about editing cc data in quantized patterns or even iterative quantize patterns for example I have a midi part that came out really good you can check it out on iTunes Store under post in space by the cube, but basically using the square editing tool under the line menu in the editors in cubase I was somehow able to get it right however, I am wondering how to not only set the edition tools to line up to quantize but to line up to different quantize values in the editor so that I can get it just right the way I see it by in only one midi region with different edits in the same midi region using the square tool for example in the piano roll editor for cc data ???????
Hello my friend, a question, I bought the update of cubase 9.5, from version 8. And when I open a track vst and record, in the track you can not see the notes, you see the transparent bar, and when I finish recording, you see the bar in black, without notes or anything, the weird thing is that I click on the midi track and the editor opens below, and the midi notes are seen, but in the editor, on the vst track, . Could you tell me how I can fix it? If I change the color of the track, if the notes are seen. Is it necessary to color the tracks so that midi notes are visible? Thank you very much and greetings from the Canary Islands
So when using the built-in sidechain function in the Cubase plugin you can't control the attack and release. Not ideal. I'd rather apply a compressor and sidechain through that device for more control. Still very helpful for quick adjustments though.

Maybe people who dont like this bad vocals? It was really hard to hear those wrong notes. :-/

I wonder that on many UA-cam videos. Could be people who can't understand it and blame the creator. Or trolls.

Vocals i about character not about "how nice" it is...
thank you Greg really great application of side C on reverb and delay
Thanks Greg! All of your videos are helping me to become a better engineer and producer and I continue to learn from you each and every day : )
Great video Greg. Thank you so much!
Thanks Greg! Always learn from your videos and clinics.....

THANKS. Interesting job
All those knowledge share with us 🙏🏻❤️
This is the man!
A seriously good tool for the tool box. Thank you!
Thanks. I've been messing around with this stuff but this is a much clearer method. thanks. I can't wait to apply this...
Thanks Greg! Great Video 👍
I'm in love of Andrea Voice
Thank you Greg. Now that's more like it.
Always Creative....
thanks for the TIPs
Great Tip again, I haven´t Heard about this Before, I must try!
Many thanks!

Always good stuff from Greg!
as usual, VERY useful Greg!
Realy nice and helpful tip! Great. Thanks!
great and helpful
Another helpful video - I'm becoming addicted....
Do you insert any vst-plugins in the main vocal track?
Hi and thanks for the great video. Is there a way to side chain the delay without duplicating the track. Also, is there any difference between side chaining and actually changing the outputs? It has always made me wonder.
I asked it me too
Excellent
really great... please give us more.. and many thanks in regards
I love Cubase!!! :D Thanks for the Video!
You are a specialist
Thanks Greg!
always great!
very helpful
wow. such a great tip. Thank you, Greg !!!
Thank you!
Very informative, thank you for doing this one!
If I could put fifty likes I would put them! Just awesome technique!!! Thanks, Greg!!!!!!!
AWesome :) dont hv to do a lot of automations for delay anymore
You saved my day just wow.
Thank you soooo much for this! It's exactly the video I've been looking for in setting up delay/sidechain on vocals. :-)
Proud moment for me: when I watch a Greg Ondo video and I already know everything! #notthatstupid 😋
(Doesn’t happen that often...)
I will have to try and up my game. :)
THANK YOU

This is golden!

GREAT WORK SIR, COULD YOU KINDLY DO SIDE CHAIN WITH KEYS AND STRINGS
thanks - you gave me some new arrows for my producer bow :)
Is this feature available on Artist?
I don't normally do this kind of recording but if it was available, it might be useful.
Greg, you could use original vocal channel to create sidechaining instead of using duplicated track...
I'm wondering why too!
I wondered why he did that too?
For future mixing or mastering stems.
Yes, Greg I’m wondering the same
Thank you
Thanks for the tipps, Greg!

Pre-fader sends was exactly what I was thinking....That's how I record my UAD plugins live
Why is it necessary to duplicate the track?
Woooww this good 👍 Thank you
really cool

Tony Carpenter
Datz what he did.
the FX Channel is the Aux.
OK, I explained it incorrectly sorry.. both delay and comp are on same aux usually. Just curious mostly why the way cubase does it happened.
Tony Carpenter
No problem.
Both Cubase and Logic could b easier in sum ways
Is the duplicated track routed to "no bus?"
Stephen A. Sheehan
itz routed 2 da sidechain
Thanks, I worked it out. Nice concept.
Why do you need to duplicate the original track though? Can't you just send from the VOX channel to the FX channel and also send from VOX channel to the sidechain?
simpply great!

great
If I wanted just the last word...word...word...word - of a phrase to trail strongly, similar technique?
Fezzler61 yup. Just toy with how hard the sidechain hits the effects and the sustains on the effects themselves. It should get you there.
