You omitted the most important thing: what to do next, after comping. How does the track behave when it consists of clips from different lanes? Ho to edit it in a workable fashion? How to make crossfades, delete blanks and reduce tails in order to minimize unnecessary mouse movements? How to get the resulting track into vari audio? And there's probably more such subtleties.
@@SticksTheJon if you haven’t worked it out yet, check out Jef Gibbons. Dude’s a beast, super knowledgeable and translates into things even I can understand. I know he’s mentioned cross fades in a couple of his vids.
After you've made the comp, select everything, then Audio - Advanced - Delete Overlaps. Then you can edit it, add crossfades etc. Before I delete overlaps I always copy the track just as a backup..
Hey Greg - you have been very helpful with all of this stuff.. Quick question: You said at 2:40 "As I click here" I'm unsure how you pulled up that menu, my tools menu comes up when I right-click but you got some long drop down box of options - what am I missing? Thanks!
Coming from Pro Tools and looking for an equivalent to “playlists”. If I record on a track. Then I just want to re-record a new take (no comping as such, no cycling)...how do I do that? Basically want to create a new version of the same track on that track
Helpful. Can you explain how to merge the lanes? For example if I want to layer or loop various vocal lanes to create a lush vocal track. If I want to keep all the lanes...do I just render?
My issue is that I recorded a stand up bas on 2 tracks. One mic and one line. I want to comp a final track, but I don't know how to make my comp edits apply to both the mic as well as the line track. Is there a method for this?
I've been using Logic Pro X for a few years after being a Cubase user since I started production. I have always wanted update from Cubase SX 3 (old huh!) Looks like Cubase can do all the things I have become used to in Logic. Comping was one of them. Thanks for a great video of that function.
Awesome! Now how do you treat the final Comp like a final polished vocal? How do you cross fade the end result and bounce it down without losing the other takes and all the while staying on the same track ?
Wouldn't that depend on what you want? Presumably you'd often want to make crossfades (which I just learned is done by hitting x), but sometimes you might not want crossfades. Not sure what the default setting is when working in comp tracks.
But how do you render the comp so you can discard all the audio files? This is the second tut I've watched that leaves that part out. I am also a Logic user, and it simple in that DAW.
Just close the lane on the track. make sure the track is selected. Next, on the top left corner of your screen select Edit. Click on Render in place/ Render Settings select render and it will make a new track for you with everything put together. Let me know if you have any questions. Hope this helped
@@miguelowls I have the same question about rendering a composited track, but I'm working with Cubase Elements which doesn't have the lane function or the render. I just create 5 audio tracks, record the song 5 times, then copy and paste the parts I want to a new track. But then it's a patchwork, and I have to keep the old files, can you help me figure this out?
I can't access vocal comping. I do not have the icon. However, I have cubase 10 pro full version. Why can't I access it? Is there a trick in cubase 10 pro? Has it changed when compared to cubase 8? Thank you!
There must be a way to split one lane when you have multiple lanes, not all of them. When I do several takes, I like to split and trim the region of the lane I want to keep, and discard the rest of that lane, without splitting ALL of the lanes at the same point. Cubase was working like that fmor me for a long time, and only recently began splitting all the lanes at the same time and place..
Thanks! How do I create gaps in the playback (non destructive) in a comp? In Logic, I option-click a selection and it de-selects that area and plays nothing in the portion of the comp. Sometimes I dont want any of the takes, simply a rest (whether it's to remove a vocal breath or for any number of reasons)
Hello Greg, thank you for the video. Do I need to activate cross fades in the pieces on the final track, after assembling from different lanes, or it is that done automatically when the comp tool is used?
Cubase does have an auto fades function which is generally on by default in the inspector so the majority of time you do not have to worry about applying crossfades afterwards.
I have a lot of unwanted "snippets of audio in between sections that lies under the actual I want when I compile them. How do I remove them with a penstroke?
Hi Greg. Just a diferent question. When i Record the track fader movents, on toutch, insted of keeping all my sutle small movement details i end up with a straight line or a simplified result of what i did, wich can be frustrating. How can i keep all ?
I do not have the icon for stacked view (show lane stack) in my audio track. Thus I can't do comping. What is the problem? I have cubase pro 10 in a Windows, NOT in a Mac; is this because the Windows version has less features or what?
Hi Greg...I spended a lot of time arranging my plugins vst stuff...folders...everything...Is there a way to save all this? Because i need to change my computer...How to have the same Cubase 10 i have now in my new machine? With all plugins arranged as i did with screenshots of the plugins and all that? Thank you very much Greg
I guess (if you haven’t done this already), you’ll be saving all your Cubase data (project) files and pasting them into your new computer so everything should be there, just the same as opening up Cubase on your old computer.
Once we have our comp built with the lanes is there any way to quickly delete all the inactive parts? That's something that takes me a little time to do manually.
You can visually delete all of the files by going to Audio - Advanced - Delete Overlaps. I think you can delete unused portions permanently by selecting the file in the pool and choosing minimize files.
Thanks! I just find it not so elegant to edit cross fades with all the takes stacked over each other. Thought it might be useful to just be left with the chosen parts without having to manually delete the unused ones as you have mentioned in the second method - Events to part
Eyal Matri agreed. Render in place isn't useful until after all the crossfading is done and the unused pieces in the lanes often get in the way of that.
You can work the same way with MIDI tracks but you may have to change some of the default settings in the MIDI record settings to New Parts. If you are in cycle mode record make sure that the stacked option is also selected.
Greg, on the note of sliding audio with Alt/Option + Ctrl, I have a very specific question: Is it possible to slide MIDI this way also? And if so, is it possible (while sliding) to have the last MIDI notes in the clip appear in the beginning of the clip, when sliding right. I.e. rotating as opposed to moving notes in time, within a clip. (Similar to the way Reaper can time-rotate audio within a media item, and apparently MIDI as well: ua-cam.com/video/tYCScaFRhMw/v-deo.html.)
