I used to play trumpet in 6th, I’m a sophomore joining band again after a year of not doing anything. Switched to baritone and when I picked up a guy’s trumpet for a second I swear I thought they made them smaller and lighter, like my god those things aren’t even half a pound
I only played the trumpet, but most instruments hurt to hold for that long. To combat this on my senior year, we put ankle weights on our bells and practiced that way the whole day. When homecoming came around, it was no sweat. That was almost 4 years ago. Good times
Fr tho. I play bass 4 currently and I can barely see over it. It’s still better than freshman year tho. That was back before we replaced our drums and harnesses (finally), and the bass I played then was even bigger, and it’s harness was awful.
Baritone ftw. Freshman year was annoying, but I toughed it out and learned to think of it as a competition. Sophmore year I wasn't traumatized, I was enlightened. Junior year I was brought back to reality when I saw the freshman struggling
Sometimes during brass arc, one of our staff members will take a pair of shoes and put it on our bell and we have to hold it up for five straight minutes. First time it happened to be as a freshmen, they forgot about me and I was up for fifteen minutes straight. On the plus side, my arms haven't hurt from staying up that long since.
Shoehorn! We do that once a week our whole marching season. We're baritones. If we put our bells down, we have to start again. Our staff doesn't force us to do it, but the section leaders do. Kind of got to admit it's funny to watch freshman suffer.
I started band in the 6th grade because we are a jr high and high school band altogether and that freshman one went towards me in the 7th grade when I started marching 😂😂😂😂
Haha 😂 as a clarinet, I will say I have it a lot easier than literally all the band but I have seen this life lesson played out too many times…Barritones,Tubas,Trombones you guys are the real ones 🥰❤️🔥💪 we need you guys in the band. Also the “traumatized sophomore” caption was just too accurate Lmao 🤣 I am a freshman but I think my sophomore friends would relate to this
Our high school has never really had any marching baritones we only had one and there was four freshman this year(including me) they told us to hold our instrument in playing position for 3 minutes and keep in mind I have never touched a marching baritone in my life I literally was trembling holding it and that day I learned why there is not any marching baritones I also heard a trumpet complain I almost threw my horn at them
So our school has this thing we did at the beginning of every season called EAGLES. You had to tie both your shoes to the horn and every letter of the word eagles represented a minute and if anyone dropped their horn angle the time would get restarted. As a baritone player, I would get mad when a trumpet started to whine. 😂😂😂
As someone who is a freshman trumpet player, marching for a parade hurts, but I’ve also never been bothered by upperclassmen since I’m more of a prodigy out of the three freshman trumpets.
No longer able to feel pain in my left arm anymore, I play clarinet so not heavy at all but the way we have to hold our right arm parallel to the ground made my arm so tired and cut off my blood circulation two years ago lol
as someone who marched trumpet as the only 8th grader in a small band, this year i was one of the only freshmen and i found it hilarious how much the actual newbies struggled with band camp it was so funny
As a flute player who had to switch to contra tuba on my second year of marching, I can highly relate. 😂 The difference in weight killed me at first. Now here I am, a senior and drum major! Seeing freshman complain about holding their instruments. 😈
How was the switch from woodwind to brass? Just out of curiosity, since I’m planning on picking up baritone from flute before my own second year of marching
@@Elloliott it's a very weird switch and the weight difference will be difficult to manage at first. Over time though it becomes pretty easy to hold. Playing a brass instrument is another challenge especially for WWs switching. Again it takes some getting used to but after time it becomes second nature. Assuming you also don't know how to play baritone, you also have to learn how to play each note. As long as you put in the time and effort learning isn't as difficult as it seems. The hardest part for me was learning to read bass clef but if can teach yourself a trick to learn it, it becomes easy. If you ever have questions always ask your director, upperclassmen, or other brass players. My marching season just ended last night and it was a blast. Our school took 1st all year long and at our final comp last night took 1st out of 11. Along with awards for Best Music and General Effect. Anyways just remember to take it easy. Learning to march with a new instrument is a process that takes time. Don't ever hesitate to ask questions, even if you feel as though they are stupid questions. Have a good season (if your marching currently) and have an amazing season next year!!!

I’m in color guard and the position we have to be in spinning and holding flags at FULL ATTENTION for 8 hours a day was torture, and they made us wear these horrendous shoes that hurt your feet SO bad
Listen during marching the last 3 years I’ve played trumpet and trumpet for 4 years before that.
