Steam Deck OLED Review

- Valve pleasantly surprised us with their 2023 release of the refreshed Steam Deck OLED handheld gaming device, with, as you guessed, an HDR OLED display and other improvements. Thanks to our video’s sponsor Trend Micro's Premium Security Suite offers complete device and identity protection for up to 10 devices. Check it out here: l.linklyhq.com/l/1v00g and use code LISA10 (case sensitive) for 10% off your purchase! The Deck OLED has an improved version of its Zen 2 processor, a slightly larger display, longer battery life and updated connectivity. These improvements keep it competitive with the Windows-based Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go that we recently reviewed. It can play Steam PC games and it runs Steam OS (Linux-based with KDE Plasma desktop). It can also play non-Steam PC games and emulators.

Really interesting to see other people interacting with the Steam Deck UI. I almost never touch the screen and usually forget that the touchscreen exists. For me, the beauty of SteamOS is that it treats the controller as a first class citizen. You can access a window manager, launch and kill apps, adjust hardware control settings and of course launch games, all with the controller. That's what Windows needs to emulate to make the Windows handheld experience better. No tiny touch targets you have to hit with your big sausage fingers...
The touch screen is much better on the OLED and actually feasible for using for games now.
@@resmarted Yes. I have a limited edition OLED and the touchscreen is better. Still gets covered in fingerprints though so I won't touch it. Haha.
I hate finger prints. I never use the touch screen if I can avoid it.
Yes this why i returned the Rog ally. Hated constantly going between buttons and fingers to do something simple.
"treats the controller as a first class citizen" yes this. Controllers are so low tier considerations for PC developers, the deck and those that followed are almost guaranteeing that robust controller support is going to be baked into a lot more games now
As a life long Linux user, I have waited for this kind of device for over 20 years. Valve has done so much for Linux and made a user respecting operating system a viable option for gamers. I am extremely grateful for their innovation and the direction they have gone.
Now there is almost no more accuses to use an operating system that doesn't grant user's root access.
My hope is that other companies will take some notes from Valve and start giving people more freedom over their own devices.
What are you even saying? All desktop operating systems have root access. It's funny that SteamDeck is using Linux but can't dualboot easily. While any Windows device can dual-boot with ease, it's almost like Valve doesn't want other people to use Windows. It's ironic, isn't it?
@DraconicA5 With Linux, you can literally disassemble and tinker with the OS to your heart's content. Don't like a piece of software pre-installed on your OS? You can probably replace it with an alternative. Don't like GNOME and it's strange workflow (I don't)? No problem; install KDE Plasma for a more traditional and customizable desktop experience.
Don't like Windows 11 and its adware/spyware? Too bad, you're stuck with it.
Bingo. As a Linux convert who went over to Linux full-time when Windows 11 came out, I can safely say that Valve is doing a lot of great work with Wine and their gaming focused offshoot Proton. Gaming on Linux literally went from being a joke to being more popular than on macOS.
@@DraconicA5It's not that Valve does not want windows on their it's just they didn't give a though of running windows on their device since they are focusing on making Linux a better experience with steamos. You seems pretty new to Linux the wya you référence desktop. Linux run on so much devices even old tech to microprocessors it is designed to be easy to dual boot or even run off a USB drive that's why it is easier to dual boot and get Linux on the Rog Ally compared to getting windows on the Steamdeck, windows is not an os which was designed to run on all devices you need to spend time to make it work well. I think valve is doing a good job and OP is right! This is not a windows machine and never was! So it's up to you to figure out how to run other os like windows!
@@cameronbosch1213 How many regular users have the skills or the interest to do that? If you don’t want to spend a lot of time learning the Linux OS, you might face some criticism from Linux fanboys. Too bad!
I own both versions. The OLED is unbelievably better, and not just because of the OLED. The 90hz is amazing. The battery improvements are not insignificant. It was immediately noticeable. The thumb sticks feel SO much better. The wifi upgrade is what it is, and it's an improvement. The additional screen size is great. It's not huge, but the .4 inch upgrade is wonderful. The HDR is something I never thought I would see, at least not in 2023, on a handheld. The total package is worth the upgrade. This device is one of those sum of the parts is better the individual upgrades kind of thing.
Yeah. It depends on the person, but I did the same from my OG Steam Deck, and the 90 hz refresh rate and OLED screen make a big difference, despite some indie games I play being locked to 60 fps anyway. The other improvements like better battery life and Wi-Fi 6E are just more reason to go for the OLED model if you don't already have a Steam Deck at all.
You are 100% correct, I wasn't gonna get the OLED but it is a impressive improvement without it being "second gen".
STOP!!
I'm going to have to buy one now 😭
I gasped with joy when I saw my favorite tech reviewer made a video about my favorite toy.
Nice review Lisa! Love your enthusiasm for the device.
Gonna stick with my LED but it’s hard to deny the advancements Valve made with this 1.5 iteration. I’m psyched to see what they do with the Deck 2.
any reason why you wanna stay with the LCD over the upgrade? simply cost? Im debating buying a lightly used LCD for $350 or so from marketplace or a new OLED
@@rhadpenguinUnless you're sensitive to PWM, I would go for the OLED model (I'm not). There's more than just the 90 hz OLED screen; better battery life with a bigger battery and a die shrunk APU, Wi-Fi 6E instead of Wi-Fi 5, and more storage for about the same price as before. Honestly, if you have an OG Steam Deck already, you're probably fine, but if you don't and are looking for one, just go for the OLED model, because it's better in nearly every way.
@@rhadpenguinI mean the deck just released last year so I can see people wanting to squeeze their last bit of use out of it because it’s very similar still. The big thing for me that convinced me to get it was being able to play it without constantly thinking about the battery like I used to.
Yep the battery life is improved by 25 percent on the OLED model.
@@firexallst4rz277Battery SIZE by 25%. The OLED and especially the 6nm chip improve it further.
Steam deck is such an amazing machine, I hope it succeeds spectacularly. The windows competition look like monkey patched and hastily put together, they put laptop gpus in them optimized for 20W unlike the deck which is optimized for 9W
Bingo. It's not just the OS, it also is the custom APU. It's not just a renamed 7840 HS running in a handheld (like the Z1 Extreme or the 7840 HS itself); its a custom APU for gaming first. And I think Valve made the right move keeping performance near identical, because it keeps the performance target the same.
I own both love them both. both have their own pluses.
@@sandeepp274really? What’s the pro for the lcd? I sold mine, after getting the oled I don’t think I’ll ever use the lcd again. It’s cheaper, but that’s all. And it’s obviously a great mach, but the oled is just better …
@@erebostdFor new buys it's an easy choice in favor of OLED of course.
But for people who already own the LCD it has a massive plus - it's already there, looks fine and doesn't cost new money.
the cope Steam Deck owners use to validate their decisions is really incredible lmao
The Rog Ally runs so much better than the Steam Deck that all you can cling to is wattage. Yikes.
Great to see you doing well Lisa! Sorry i havent watched your more recent videos, but always love seeing your content and hope youre doing well. Love the new hair cut as well! All the best and keep it up.
Great. I’ve been looking for your review of this.
Subscribed, sister! Great review, relatable points of interest, just technical enough to be educational but accessible for a PC layman like me. Thanks -I look forward to more of your reviews!
She's honestly one of the best reviewers in youtube. Ive been following this channel since I had my old Windows Mobile 6.0 smartphones 🫠
Great review as always thx, decided to upgrade for bigger storage, battery life & screen.
We love you lisa keep these reviews coming 😊
Steam Deck 1.6 is great. I'm waiting for mine to come all the way to Vietnam. Thanks for your awesome review!
thank you for the review!
Looked forward to this! I have my Steam Deck OLED Limited Edition and am very happy with it but it does have some issues
Same. Pretty usable as a mini PC in desktop mode connected to a dock, too. I also installed Windows 11 and not all the drivers are available yet, but I can see there's a lot of potential on the Windows side, too. I'd prefer a higher resolution screen, but I think the color reproduction is fantastic. Highly suggest that people get the biggest SSD and SD card possible so they can just use the device without having to babysit storage.
How's the PWM flickering? I might get the LCD model instead because I couldn't handle the eye-strain of the OLED displays in low brightness (when playing in low light)
UA-cam being youtube, I haven't been recommended your videos in a long time. Real glad to see that your reviews are as good as ever!
I’m still rocking my OG steam deck and love it goes everywhere with me. I’m still learning Linux so any tips pass them along. 😊
Good for you!
Lisa always has the best T-Shirts. ❤
Of all the reviews I’ve watched of the Steam Deck OLED, this is my favorite. You do a great job explaining everything in detail but also get right to the point.
I love mine so so much! I got it last sat on a weekend unexpectedly when going out to grab food.
I’m so happy you referenced my favorite PS2 RPG, Dark Cloud 2! Good on you! 😊
I got an oled steamdeck. I have not gotten used to the controls placement. The sticks etc are at odd locations relative to your thumb arc because of the trackpads.
Steam Deck 2 is going to be so dope 😌
Sure! and the steam deck 3 is going to be so much doper than 2!
meanwhile i'm having a blast with my steam deck 1 😍😍😍
Yeah steam deck 2 is going to be something exciting.
We'll have to wait for AMD to get 3nm. Since Apple have bought 3nm capacity until 2025
@@dandiaz19934 There can never be a Steam Deck 3. It all ends at 2.
This Steam Deck is already so dope if you are into gaming on the go.😊
Can I access/run games on my Epic Games Store account? Or is there a better device I should be looking at? Thanks,
I love the hair Lisa.
Lmfao
Very snazzy do
Noooooooooo...how could you
@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN I think it brings out her beautiful facial features.
Great review as always. Also, cool earrings.
"Switch for adults" I like That.
lol wierd statement considering demographics
The Switch literally is for kids and Nintendo sheep to the Nintendo slaughter. The Steam Deck is for those who wanted a portable Xbox on steroids; bascially everything else Nintendon't.
There sure are a lot of M-rated games on a console "literally for kids"....
Best review of the OLED steam deck, clear and straight to the point. Information how to run other launcher etc. Also Chiaki with wifi 6 is a great alternative for remote play to the ps5.
when it works itd s game changer
Wow, it been a while. I love the hair. Okay now I'll watch the review 😊
My legion go 1tb is coming next week 😎
I love mine - would definitely recommend it for people that have steam games
It was a tough choice but I purchased the steam oled today. Hope to get it with in a week or so.
in my 12 years of youtube nerding, how am i JUST finding this channel ?
I scooped up a 512GB OLED version and immediately dropped in a 2TB SSD. The upgrade was fairly simple, just be careful of the ribbon cable. After that, Valve lets you download the image file which you can boot to from a thumb drive and bingo, you've got an awesome device with oodles of storage.
The glossy oled deck is so beautiful, it’s perfect!
So is the etched glass, love it
“It’s kind of like a Switch for adults” is the best backhanded burn
I joke its like a switch that went to the gym and took loads of steroids but a adult switch is also good
The steam deck is THE gaming machine for parents. Portable, pause everywhere and every time, it has everything you need to game.
8:36 Streaming works over the browser, gamepass should work that way, too 🙂👍😊
She says that you can stream, but just can't run the games on the machine itself (if I understood correctly)
@@zeiphon isn‘t this thing stream only? I thought that’s the point if it, like geforce now and such
I said you can only stream, not download and install games.
@@mobiletechreviewyou are absolutely right, i misheard you! Sorry for that, English isn’t my first language, maybe i mixed that up because of that. I changed my comment 🙂👍. One question: you can stream gamepass games, can’t you (at leadt a short google search suggested it). So you *can* play gamepass games, but only while streaming, right? 🙂
@@erebostd the steam deck? oh you can certainly install games, depending on compatability. I'd say streaming is a secondary feature (for more demanding games etc)
great review
Looking good Lisa! Great review as always
Hair looks, MAD!
Another level this review is
Surprisingly Rog ally is getting there woth resume
I have tons of games on Steam that I would love to be able to pick up and play everywhere. I really want this device but they are not selling them in Aus!!! Ugh!
Hey Lisa, I've heard reports of the OLED deck display not being very good for dark gray kinds of scenes, producing a grainy image. Was this present in your unit and is it noticeable? I'm on the fence right now trying to decide whether to upgrade from my LCD model.
That’s a first
@@TonyJennyea I haven't heard anything about this either. Where did these reports come from?
No
I heard some screens were from a different supplier, so maybe you got a lemon? Try doing a replacement with Valve.
No problem with darks being dithered or washed out on ours. I haven't seen much on Reddit or Discord about it, either.
ally and legion are on Zen4
I really want to tinker with my OLED Deck. But I haven't used Linux in years and have no idea how I'd reinstall it if I were to mess up the OS by over-tinkering (I've done it before).
Reinstall is super easy. Steam has instruction on reimaging the Steam Deck. Just put all your games on a big sdcard then you can tinker to your heart's content while your games are untouched.
I really want hal effect and VRR
do you find the steamdeck really big in your hands?
No, but i'm 5' 11" and have really large hands. I find the Switch too small, and the Deck (and ROG Ally) are the ideal size for me.
@@mobiletechreviewyou need to get some bigger joy-con grips like the Hyperion Pros that I just picked up. That Zelda green with a gold d-pad is so nice! I could finally pay my switch more comfortably now and I'm not sure why I waited so long to do it.
MTR still going strong all these years!
The Wii mote is the ultimate weapon I'd choose btw
You can play Xbox Game Pass games. I'm playing on mine. It's a bit tricky but you will find tutorials on UA-cam (which don't involve separately installing Windows) + Once you do it, it will be like launching an installed Steam game; you won't have to switch to desktop mode.
I haven't found a way to install Games Pass games (which requires UWP). Just streaming. Can you share a link to a working way to do this and deal with XBOX Games Pass UWP DRM?
@@mobiletechreview no it’s just for streaming but you still get access to some good games that way
I am waiting and praying for an limited edition available in Europe 😅
I don’t own any handhelds yet, besides the switch.. I game on PS5 & XB series X… I want to get Steam Deck, but wish I could play my Xbox & PS purchases on it 😢
Most third-party games are on Steam. Heck, many PS4/PS5 games seem on Steam now.
@@cameronbosch1213 I think he wants the actual purchases, not just buying the games again. This is why I prefer gaming with Steam... you buy a game, you don't get stuck to one game system for it.
Cloud gaming might help?
You need the Playstation Portal
Love the oled deck and my ally got both yeah!! Legon go meh
What game is that at 5:53
Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon
Oh my god, HAIR! Now, Lisa, I haven't watched one of your videos in a while so maybe the "new do" ain't so new, but talk about a departure... ;-)
It's cool! OLED Rulez Forever!👍
Being able to play something for a while and suspend the game if I have to leave it is so useful.
LETS GOO STEAM DECK OLED. RRAHHHHH!!!!
Woah, that hairstyle is quite a departure from the ones from two months ago....
I was on the fence with this or Ally. Chose the Ally cos I had Epic Games and other Win apps.
However the OLED is magnificent...
I love mine ❤🎮
The Steam Deck Oled is my first one. Is it better than the Nintendo Switch yep. I love it so far, but there is something I don’t like about it. It can’t play older games for some reason. It should run older games with no issues
Which games are you talking about?
^
Should have 15% of performances more , maybe more if the 15Watt of TDP has been removed.
I've undervolted my device and I'm getting 10-15% more performance than the OG deck.
@@seannewcomb7594 probably you need to clean the air flow and replace the termal paste 😊
always take a matte screen over gloss screen, gloss over amps the colors, matte gives a closer to-reference color grade
Love the new hair do. 😊
As always great review. You make the details sound great. I love that you say your likes and dislikes.
Jesus Christ nooooooo
@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN what does Jesus Christ have to do with this?
I want to play PS3 games for 8-10 hours. Can this fo it?
00:18 Neither Steam, nor Valve did it first. There were many before them, but if they didn't appear in the newspapers then that doesn't mean they didn't exist.
I didn't know she is still kick all these year, i remember watching mobile tech review when windows phone just enter the market its like 11 year or so
It's interesting to see from the senior reviewer point of view...
I don't like the Steam Deck but it has the analog sticks in the proper position for human thumbs and it is therefore immediately superior to all other handhelds.
Love the hair too! Great review
Great review..
Where did Lisa go????
7:34 I hate 😔
Sorry this is off-topic but I LOVE THE NEW HAIR!!!
Lmao
Nooooo it's awful....rather see purple hair
I agree with the switch for adults comment. The switch still feels like a kid's toy. The steam deck and the windows handhelds just feel much better to play for long periods of time. I mean over an hour. The battery on the ally was my biggest let down. It only lasts me an hour to maybe n hour and a half. Less if I ask more from it in the settings.
I purchased the original Steam Deck and was really impressed with it, but I eventually sold it because I found that a handheld gaming device just isn't my thing.
Fair enough. If it's not for you, it's not for you. 😊
Conspiracy theories are fun!
I like your cut G
Love the new look Lisa. I think I might upgrade my LCD to an OLED.
Love the hair!
😮
You look so much younger with that haircut
They really all run the same unless ur running at 30W with only 20 mins of battery life than its not even portable lol
did she rescue a baby from a house fire or what?
Feels like the most important thing in this review was the ad to claw a revenue at the begining
I apologize for fear mongering. The linux community (almost by necessity) is very defensive. We're struggling to hang onto our few percentage of users in the face of microsoft's walled garden. We're making important inroads with the steam deck and any perceived (real or imagined) slight, or misinformation spooks us because it could all come crumbling down. So when it appears reviewers are reviewing the windows handhelds and not the linux one, it can give the impression that the linux one is somehow less legitimate. I was mistaken, and I apologize.
Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I really tried everything to get a hold of the OG model via retail once I realized Valve wasn't getting us a review loaner. But at that point it was too late-- really impossible to find in stock for the first month after release. This time I was prepared and inventory is much better than the first release.
The only walled garden is with iOS so let's get that straight. Windows still provide you with lots of options.
@@volcalstone and it's proprietary APIs?
@@volcalstoneI mean it’s just that the wall is lower in windows not that it doesn’t have a walled garden
@@derekfurst6233 you must be a Linux or Apple fanboy. Windows isn't perfect but it does everything that I need it to do. It's the #1 OS for a reason. Does Microsoft need to come out with a lighter version for handhelds yes but I don't have an issue with it's current status.
iOS is nice if you just want things to just work but I like my freedom thank you very much. I heard good things about Linux too and I don't mind using it if I have to. It's just not my #1 choice that's all. Windows works with everything period.
It is unbelievable to me how bad nintendo dropped the ball with this whole handheld gaming thing- they just adamently REFUSE to update shit and are so afraid of the secrity with their proprietary library. They yet again changed the entire landscape of gaming..how many times now and they just let it go...nintendo being nintendo...the creatives there are the best in the business, the suits however...are the absolute worst
First 😊
Love the shirt matches what you are reviewing. 😀
As you can see you re nowhere near 1st...
Just a baby with nothing to say just wanting to play stupid games for attention
Yuck
steam a windows games store that runs linux instead of windows to emulate windows games to run on linux ..steam os is useless and gabe dosent want to pay a windows licence..poor review...the steam deck is already outdated .. all windows handhelds run windows games natively while sd needs optimizations !
You ok Lisa? Your speech seemed a bit slurred in this video.
I have two steam decks and the ability to reset it is ridiculous. I feel like I spent over 1,000 for a useless piece of hardware. I don’t use windows so I can’t restore the deck. It’s just sitting here and I’m one of the first adopters of the steam. Like I said I bought two. One is unopened and one is useless.
Why do you need windows to restore a deck? I've used Linux to write the sd card before. You only need an image writer.
You don't need Windows to factory reset or re-image a Steam Deck. I'm confused.
You can write a Steam Deck restore image from Windows, Linux, or Mac. You can even do it from the desktop mode of a working Steam Deck. Google "Steam Deck Recovery Instructions."
You can restore the deck without windows to?
What you on about?
Love your presentatios, but original hair style do much better.
